It’s that time of year again, spring is in the air and everyone is glad to be in their gardens. Last year the standard of gardens entered into the Calne in Bloom competition was very high and the judges were very impressed with the variety of different displays. The “In Bloom” team are hoping for lots of entries this year. There are several different categories, as shown to the right. If you know of a garden you consider to be worthy of recognition, (it could be your own, a neighbour’s or one you have seen in the town be it residential or licensed premises) please do enter it.

The 2015 Calne Lion’s Duck Race promises to be bigger and better than ever! The highlight of the Calne calendar is the annual Lion’s Duck Race. This popular event, now in its 29th year, is always enthusiastically supported by the generous people of Calne, who line the river in their thousands to cheer on the school, business and individual ducks as they race down the River Marden. This year's Duck Race is being held on Saturday 16th May at 10am, with the wonderfully decorated larger School and Club Ducks taking to the water first, swiftly followed by the Business Ducks and finally the 3000 colourful individual ducks. The School and Business ducks not only race but are also competing for a separate prize awarded for the most artistically decorated. This year, the Best Dressed Duck competition will be presided over by our guest Judge, Miss Wiltshire, Georgia Delaney. Mark Leach, from Calne Lions, was also excited to announce "By popular demand, we have decided to bring back the exciting Duck Sprint Races from the Town Hall to the Marden House finish line. There will also be a Treasure Hunt for the children that will follow the route of the Duck Race, so make sure that you bring a pencil to fill in your answers to the clues.”

Calne Heritage Quarter Take a few steps back in time around historic Calne
If you’ve never taken Calne’s Blue Plaque Trail, or haven’t done so for a time, it’s a veritable feast for your historical imagination and puts you in touch with where you live and its past. 10 Blue Plaques are included and the Calne Heritage Centre website offers an interactive guide to all of them www.calneheritage.co.uk/blue.php Otherwise, pop into the Heritage Centre before you set off, or book a Guided Tour (for the cost of a donation). Contact Sue Boddington on 01380 828851 THE ROUTE Starting at the Heritage Centre on New Road, cross over to the bridge that leads to Marden House. The Bath Road Pump is commemorated on the plaque on the brick

gate post by the pump. Stay on the same side of the road and walk towards the Town Hall. You will see the next plaque facing you at the site of the canal Wharf. Next it’s Castle House - go around the Town Hall and make your way left and up Cox’s Hill to find the 3rd blue plaque near the top, on your left. Now, turn back along Castle Street, along the ‘narrow bit’ and come down Market Hill to Buckeridge’s Steps, where you will find blue plaque 4. Cross at the pedestrian crossing and make your way up the High Street and into Wood Street. Part way along the street, high up, you will find the 5th blue plaque marking the site of the Quaker Meeting House. Returning down the High Street, walk past the library and turn left past ‘the head’ onto Beach Terrace. Follow the river along until you see the wooden bridge where you will spot Harris' Bacon Factory plaque. The Harris brothers invented the unique curing process for bacon for which marks Calne as a critical location in the food history of the nation. Cross the bridge and make your way back to Church Street. Turn left into Mill Street, to the sharp bend in the road where you will see Proclamation Steps bearing plaque 7. Step into the narrow lane close to the steps which leads to Church Street. The house at the other end, on the corner, is Church House, once home to Dr. Jan Ingenhousz (discoverer of photosynthesis) and now
Following the success of last year’s inaugural Business Fair, we are pleased to announce that the Calne Business Fair will be returning on Saturday 16th May 2015. The event will be taking place at the historic Calne Town Hall between 10am and 1pm and once again will coincide with the Annual Lion’s Duck Race, creating an ideal opportunity for you to meet other local businesses and residents in the area. The fair provides you with an ideal opportunity to promote your business by showcasing what you have to offer, raise awareness and make valuable connections, in a welcoming and informal environment. Weaver’s House is the location of the final plaque and it can be found on the Green (the wool trade was the main economy in the area from the middle ages to the early 19th century). From Church Street, turn left into Kingsbury Street, past the wonderful Alms Houses and you’ll find the plaque around the corner on the north east side of the Green. And finally… return to the Heritage Centre to look at the photos of some of the things you have seen and discovered. Run by volunteers, the Centre is a wonderful resource and relies on your support. WATERING HOLES ALONG THE WAY Along this route you will pass close by to some inviting watering holes! Why not try the Lansdowne Strand Hotel, Farmhouse Café and Bakery, Faye’s Bistro or Sampaquita Café?

Last year’s Carnival procession was fantastic with a record number of walking entries and floats with many themes, colours and creative ideas. This year we would like the procession to be even bigger! It’s open to schools, community groups, clubs and organisations, young and old. A Calne Town & Calne Without Parish initiative
The Calne Renewable Energy Group is made up of local residents and councillors from Calne Town and Calne Without Parish Councils. The aim of the group is to submit for a public referendum a Neighbourhood Development Order (NDO) which will determine what type of renewable technology can be placed where within the Calne Town and Calne Without parish boundaries without needing to go through the drawn out planning permission process. If the public vote yes for the NDO it will mean that any future community energy groups or companies wishing to build any renewable energy sites must follow the planning rules contained within the NDO.
CALNE RENEWABLE ENERGY CONSULTATION DAY July 11th @ Calne Town Hall, 10am-1pm
The consultation day, on July 11th is a chance for the group to show you what renewable technologies are available and where the best sites are for those technologies. It’s then YOUR chance to tell the group what you think and what you would like to see happen in Calne and Calne Without. YOUR OPINION COUNTS as the NDO document must show that the public has been consulted as to its content. The Calne Community Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group will also be at the
consultation day for you to voice your opinion about other aspects of the town you would like to see changed or improved such as housing, transport, health and well being. This is your Town and Countryside so take this opportunity for your voice to be heard. Further information about the two groups are available on www.calne.gov.uk
CALNE COMMUNITY NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Let us know what is important to you! The Neighbourhood Plan is evolving to provide policies to guide planning decisions on land uses and to protect important open spaces and buildings. The Calne Community Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group meets every 3 weeks to progress the plan. The Group need to know what you like about Calne and its surroundings, what you want to protect , what you would like more of and on which areas of land you think these things could be provided. The Group have been holding consultation events over the last few months, most recently in Calne on 13 & 14 February and Derry Hill, 14 March. The events were well attended, providing useful feedback. The process of consultation is ongoing and the Group is always keen to hear your views which can be submitted to Clare Harris at Calne Town Council, Bank House, The Strand, Calne, SN11 OEN, e mail, calne@calne.gov.uk for the attention of Clare Harris. CALNE BIKE MEET 24th-25th JULY 2015 Hello to the great people of Calne! We would like to invite you this year’s Bike Meet event here in our wonderful town.
Please come and join us at our campsite from 7pm on Friday 24th July 2015 at Beversbrook Farm, Calne. We have a large bar and live bands and an acoustic tent all weekend. On Saturday 25th July from 10am in the town centre the bikes will take over. There will be owner’s clubs, stalls and traders all around the town pedaling their wares and goods. At 4pm, the town will rattle and vibrate to the sound of hundreds of motorcycles all warming up to roll out on an official ride out. A 40 minute loop will see us winging our way back into Beversbrook Farm where the evening’s music kicks off again till 12 midnight. So do stay with us and enjoy the live bands and we can all spend a little more time together without the need to push off home early. Please remember events Friday / Saturday night, and in the town on Saturday, are all FREE to noncampers and you can catch the X55 bus to our main gate or if you are driving / riding, we have a car / bike park on the site. Non campers will NOT be allowed to bring in any drinks to the campsite at all. No dogs or fires at all. Thank you for your support to keep this event running here in Calne. We are looking for marshals for this event so if you’d love to help out for just a few hours on any of the days, please ring us on 07546 517665.
