THE TOWN MAYOR’S REFLECTIONS AND LOOKING FORWARD TO 2015 already and lots to look forward to in Calne. Looking back over 2014, we’ve achieved so much as a community that it really brings home what a fantastic place Calne is to live and work. The first SN11 Business Fair was a resounding success and fitted so nicely alongside the annual Lion’s Duck Race, that it’s going to happen again this year on May 16th. Our events brought people out in their thousands, work got underway on the skate bowl, and the town came alive with performing acts in a multitude of venues and genres. If 2014 is anything to go by then town life will go from strength to
2O15! strength, and I know you’ll be out in your thousands again – giving your support wherever and whenever you can. A highlight for me was the Winter Festival when I was lucky enough to
parade with our marvellous lanternmakers, meet Bjorn the Polar Bear and, of course, ask Santa Claus for a stocking! It was a fun-filled day, which brought you out in your thousands to enjoy a bright, cloudless sky and a spectacular fireworks display to cap it off. In 2015, there is so much more to look forward to. The Food and Drink Festival will be back on September 5th, so if you are a local food or drink producer please support us and get involved. The Calne Spring Sing will take place on 18th April; this is a free event and showcases the talents of local choirs in venues around the town. All are welcome. Related to that, the new Calne Larks community choir is going great guns and is also open to all. This year will also see our first Calne Heritage Week in September – all linking in with a drive to make more of Calne’s unique history and especially its position as the home of the Wiltshire cure for ham and bacon. A Calne Town & Calne Without Parish initiative
CALNE CHOSEN FOR COMMUNITY ACCELERATOR PROJECT FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY Calne’s Renewable Energy Steering Group has been selected by RegenSW, the Exeter-based sustainable energy group, to join its Community Accelerator Project. The Steering Group is working to establish the UK’s first Neighbourhood Development Order for renewable energy in Calne and Calne Without parish. The Calne group is one of 30 to have been chosen from over 5,000 groups nationally for the project, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which aims to support the growing community energy movement by helping communities to own, generate and save energy. Sophy Fearnley-Whittingstall, acting chair of Calne Renewable Energy Steering Group, said: “We are very lucky to have been chosen for this project, and RegenSW’s expertise will be invaluable as the Steering Group moves into the next phase of establishing a Neighbourhood Development Order. This will involve our members getting out and about into the community to find out what types of green energy schemes people who live here would support.” Calne Renewable Energy Steering Group was formed in 2013 to manage the process of a Renewable Energy Neighbourhood Development Order (NDO) for Calne Town Council and Calne Without Parish Council, with grant funding from the government. The NDO is a planning tool which enables the community to grant planning permission for specific developments they want to see go ahead, in this case renewable energy, without developers having to apply separately for planning permission. The community must be consulted closely at every stage of the process. Jodie Giles, Project Manager,

RegenSW, said: “The project will enable community energy groups to better engage the whole community, drawing in skills from as many people as possible, along with support from local authorities and businesses. It will help community groups look at their energy use, the renewables resource locally, and find the most appropriate technologies and sites.” Sophy Fearnley-Whittingstall added: “The renewable energy NDO is a very exciting and innovative scheme which will really help to put the Calne area on the map as a
more sustainable place to live and work. We’d like more people to get involved, so if you are interested in helping please contact the Town Council. HANGING BASKET DEMONSTRATIONS AND WORKSHOPS The Town Hall, Calne, Saturday 9 May 2015 Sessions at 9.30am and 11.30am Calne Town Council is once again organising two demonstrations /workshops giving local people the opportunity to come along to the Town Hall, to plant up their own hanging basket(s) for the summer season. As in previous years our Head Groundsman will be leading the workshops and will be on hand to give guidance where necessary. You are invited to come along with your own hanging basket/s and liner/s. The compost, gel and plants will all be provided at a cost of £14 per basket. The sessions will commence at 9.30am and 11.30am with a demonstration. At the end of the session you will have planted up your own hanging basket ready for your summer display. BEVERSBROOK SPORTS AND COMMUNITY FACILITY-THE JOURNEY SINCE MAY 2009 Gone are the days when the fields on the bypass were grazed by farm animals and ploughed by tractors. Nowadays, the fields are echoing with sports enthusiasts participating in their much loved activities and enjoying one of the best outdoor sports venues in the South West of England. The Beversbrook journey began in 1999 when a study from Wiltshire Council showed a shortfall of 26% recreational space, and local community groups could not expand their clubs due to the poor facilities available. Calne Town Council committed to change this, acknowledging that the problem could only worsen as new housing development was approved. With grant funding of £1.8 million the Beversbrook journey began and dreams came true for Calne. Since the opening of Beversbrook in 2009 its success has been outstanding. It is now home to 65 football teams (ranging from under 2s to seniors), St Mary’s School (as a venue to play all the school’s lacrosse fixtures), not to mention being home to some of the best cricket, tennis and archery clubs in the county. 31 other organisations proudly call Beversbrook their home, including some national governing bodies.
Beversbrook’s proudest moments: • Winners of the Institute of Groundsmanship Best Grass Roots Sports Facility in UK and Ireland, 2013 • Runners Up in the Institute of Groundsmanship Best Grass Roots Sports Facility in UK and Ireland, 2014 • Winners of the Market Town Award in the South West of England in 2010 • Host to English Ladies cricket matches in 2013 and 2014 • Host of around 6831 footballing and 367 cricketing activities each year • News articles featured in local and national publications • Gold winner in Britain in Bloom Parks and Open Spaces Category.
• Achieved the level five ‘outstanding’ achievement award in the Britain in Bloom in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category • Opening of four floodlit tennis courts and the rehoming of Calne Tennis Club • Providing the community with a local cinema • Annually, 40,000 people visit Beversbrook • Finally, a staggering £436,000 of grantfunding has been invested into Beversbrook, not including the section 106 money for the build of the community hall
So, has the journey ended or what is next for Beversbrook? In 2015, £600,000 of grant money will be invested into Beversbrook with the construction of the All Weather Pitch (3G) and extension to the main entrance to expand the bar area and a purpose-built coffee shop. A car parking extension is high on the priority list and planning and grant applications have been submitted. The introduction of an indoor marquee in the Community Hall will enable Beversbrook to host wedding receptions, and two new exciting sporting projects are on the horizon. So … watch this space.

What a great Calne Winter Festival 2014 It was a fabulous day starting with wide eyed children at Santa's 'frozen' themed Grotto. Bjorn the Polar Bear wowed the children (and adults). The food, drink, craft stalls and fun fair provided sustenance and gifts, laughter and fun. The fantastic lantern parade broke last year's record with over 600 lanterns and stretched from Bremhill View Social Club down to the narrows on Curzon Street. The lights looked wonderfully bright and festive and the impressive firework display dazzled us all. THANK YOU CALNE for turning out and supporting this amazing event, your community spirit is second to none!....Our heartfelt thanks also go to all those who sponsored and supported the festival. To the Hills Group Ltd and Calne Leisure Centre for Bjorn, Chilvester Financial for Santa's Grotto, Katie Harflett for designing and decorating the Grotto and the local stores for the sweets. To J&D Funeral Directors for supporting the Reindeer, JJ&S Transport for the staging, Sound Images Roadshow with the music, Xpressions StreetDance, Singchronize Choir and Anything But Ordinary Productions youth theatre for entertaining the waiting crowds, the stall holders and churches that filled the streets. Thanks also to Lord Lansdowne and the Bowood Estate for the wonderful Town Christmas Tree, Haines Construction for transportation, Wiltshire Council for the free car parking and Jennings Fun Fair for the dazzling fireworks. A BIG THANKS to all the children, schools and community groups that took part in the fabulous lantern parade and to the emergency services, Lions Club and all the volunteer marshals, your help was much appreciated. Thanks also to the Council staff and Councillors for all the hard work leading up to the festival and on the day.....and of course we can't forget Mr and Mrs Santa Claus! ...THANK YOU!

Creating more reasons to visit and explore the Calne area A group working in the Calne area has been awarded £13,000 by the Government to develop proposals to increase visitor numbers - which are lower here than in other market towns in Wiltshire. The challenge is to redesign the way tourism services are delivered locally to achieve better outcomes for the people that use and pay for them and in particular to improve: • Visitor numbers and length of stay • Employment opportunities • Visitor and retail spend Work already done has shown that the rich heritage of the area is currently under-exploited. Through work with Heavenly consultancy, an approach is being developed around the unique heritage of the ‘Wiltshire cure’, the meat curing process developed in Calne by the Harris brothers which is nationally and internationally known. By reclaiming the curing process for Calne, the hope is to create a platform from which to deliver visitor activities and attractions, as well as opportunities for new events. Calne really is the ‘Home of the Original Wiltshire Cure’.
This will be supplemented by proposals to: • Create a Calne Heritage Quarter, showing our rich local heritage, • Improve awareness of Calne as a gateway to nearby historic sites, • Develop the A4 as a Tourist Route. As these activities evolve, we expect to see increased visitor numbers, an increase in local jobs over time, and improved retail spend. The Our Place project involves a radical rethink of the way the community area is presented locally, nationally and internationally and will require a lot of hard work and significant resources to implement the ideas. A Steering Group is driving the 2-year project forward with residents joining business members, community groups, councillors and council staff in a drive to engage more people and put Calne and the villages on the tourist map. It’s early days, yet there is a great deal of excitement and motivation amongst the Steering Group to

Calne Choral was founded in 1886, and is one of the oldest choral societies in the country. Only a handful of others, including such giants as the Halifax and the Huddersfield Choral Societies, are older. We have 70-80 members and hold three main concerts a year.

Our concerts range from the traditional choral works of Handel and Mendelssohn to the modern works of Rutter and European song cycles. Calne Choral has always attracted recognised instrumentalists and soloists and we build on this by offering opportunities for younger, local talent to work with these established musicians. Some of these have gone on to gain wider recognition and recording contracts. The choir works as part of the Calne community. We organise at least one workshop each year with an open invitation to come and try singing with us. We also join the town’s Spring Sing with different styles of music. Our concert on 21 March will have traditional pieces of Easter music but our summer concert on 11 July will be different, so keep an eye on our website www.calnechoral.co.uk.
