TOWN MAYOR’S UPDATE

WELCOME CALNE’S NEW COUNCILLOR

Wow. What an amazing first three months to my Mayoral term. It has been a true privilege to represent Calne at over 100 engagements including Civic Services and Mayor Making in Bath, Salisbury, Marlborough, Chippenham, Royal Wootton Bassett and Malmesbury. Wiltshire has an incredibly deep military history and it was an honour to be invited to Sounding Retreat by the 7th Battalion The Rifles in Marlborough. Also to attend the recent Civil War reenactment marking the events that took place during the English Civil War. It was a joy to welcome friends from our three twinned towns, Charlieu, Caln and Eningen to our tri-twinning event in June. I was proud to be able to show them Calne at its very best throughout the Carnival weekend. The Carnival procession was a highlight for me with much time and effort being put in by everyone to make the stunning entries. Because of the high standard of entries, I found it very difficult to judge, but congratulations again to the winners and thank you for all entering. I would also like to extend my thanks to the many volunteers, sponsors, charities, staff and councillors who do us proud by their continued support for events. The whole weekend was a great success and I sincerely hope our foreign visitors went home very proud to be twinned with Calne.

It was great to see a new event taking shape. On Sunday, June 23, we had the first ‘Open Gardens’ weekend which was a great success. Visitors enjoyed looking around people’s beautiful gardens and along the way it raised over £600 for the Mayor’s Charities. In July, we saw possibly the largest Bike Meet yet and I would like to thank the dedicated committee for all the hard work they did organising this fantastic event for the town and visiting tourists. In July we saw the launch of the new ‘Visit Calne’ website where you will be able to see what events are on and where. Additionally, our visiting Tourists and residents now have the ‘Great West Way®’ to be proud of, Calne is featured as a Great West Way® stopping point for its Heritage quarter and town history. I have met several very worthy Civic award winners, their devotion to Calne and the community is both inspiring and commendable. It has also been a massive pleasure to welcome new businesses to the Town, I wish them every success for the future.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported my events over the last 3 months, whether it was the Eurovision party, quiz night, bingo or a raffle. You have helped raise money for my Charities, which are Dorothy House and Thrive @ Kingsbury Green Academy. What’s on in the next 3 months? We have the Mayors Choral Concert, Bingo nights and Christmas shopping day. The theme this year is ‘1920 to 2020’ so I am looking forward to seeing some inspired outfits on display. We have also started to plan this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Lunch. CALNE IN BLOOM

OPEN 2019 GARDENS The first Calne in Bloom ‘Open Gardens’ event was held on Sunday 23rd July, it was a huge success with lots of positive feedback given by both visitors and garden owners.

Fortunately, the weather was on our side and both the Town Mayor Cllr Robert Merrick and Deputy Town Mayor Cllr Rich Jones enjoyed meeting owners and visitors at the various locations. Many of the gardens had pop up tea rooms which was a very welcome treat, there was an abundance of cakes, scones and drinks on offer.

CALNE IN BLOOM ART COMPETITION The Calne in Bloom Art Competition for 2019 was entitled ‘Future Earth’ and we encouraged entrants to be imaginative in their artwork.

Many of the town’s Primary Schools and one Preschool entered. Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Merrick saw many varied interpretations of how children thought our planet will look in the future.

Prizes were awarded to pupils at Holy Trinity, Marden Vale and Fynamore Schools also Heddington Preschool who entered a group piece.

Thank you to everyone that entered, every piece was great and shared many ideas of ‘Future Earth’.

The total raised from donations was £642.85 for The Mayor’s Appeal, ‘Thrive’ @ Kingsbury Green Academy and Dorothy House. This is an absolutely amazing amount and we are confident that this will now become an annual event.

ALLOTMENT AND GARDENS COMPETITION 2019 Thank you to all residents who entered this annual competition. Our Judges had a lovely time visiting the many private gardens, community gardens and allotments.

What a difficult task they had awarding points for all the different categories. The prizes will be awarded at the Annual Awards Ceremony in October.

CALNE POP-UP POCKET PARK HAS OFFICIALLY OPENED The Calne Pop-Up Pocket Park, located next to the lower Sainsbury’s Car Park, officially opened on Saturday 20th July. The park has been designed and organised by a group of volunteers from Calne, who have taken action in an unused space to benefit the local community.

The open day was a great success and featured live music, entertainment and updates presented by the park’s volunteers. If you would like to volunteer some time at the Pocket Park, contact calnepocket@gmail.com

FREE BUS TRAVEL WITHIN CALNE DURING OCTOBER HALF TERM A number of bus services will operate for free during the October half term period to highlight access to Calne Town Centre and our bus network linking areas of Calne to the Town Centre.

From 24th October to 1st November, bus services 40, 42 and 43 will offer free fares to passengers travelling within Calne.

With plenty going on during the half term, why not take your nearest bus into the Town Centre for our week of family film screenings at Calne Town Hall, ATBShop’s skate event at the Calne Skate Bowl, or browse our local shops and selection of local cafés.

CALNE SUMMER CARNIVAL IN REVIEW

Although a few months may have passed since this event, we hope fond memories are still held of the annual Calne Carnival, held on June 29th 2019. A day which saw a rocket in temperature, making us all want to find the shadiest spot in the Town Gardens, yet the Town still swarmed with an abundance of laughter, imagination, fun and that good ol’ Calne community spirit!

‘Around the World in a Day’ was the carnival theme presented to the Town, a theme which allowed us to highlight cultures from around the world, traditions, beliefs and lifestyles. The idea behind this being that there are 194 countries and 7 continents in the world, but how much do we really know about them?

A whole host of entertainment was spread across the town, including a reptile zoo to highlight the ‘deepest darkest Peru’, which was housed in the Town Hall, a steel band; beautifully fitting with the weather, taking us across seas to the Caribbean. There was also a link to Calne in Bloom, a wonderful community project which is an exciting partnership between Calne Town Council and local community gardening and conservation groups. Helping support this great group, were ‘Treemendous’ a duo of stilt walking tree entertainers, who offered out laughter, high-fives and a perfect photo opportunity! Not forgetting the free bug house making and plant/flower heads available from Mrs Potty on The Wharf too!

But of course, how could a carnival be complete without the main attractionthe parade, which was our biggest to date! With an amazing 22 entrants full of music, colour and beaming faces of which were parallel to that of the sun, all cooled down by children and adults alike as they passed with cooling water guns to add to the festive fun! It was clear to see the sheer effort, love and time put into each entry by many schools, community groups and families alike!

They all were mightily impressive.

The parade provided a beautiful end to a beautiful day, bringing the Town back to its roots of providing brilliant traditional events. Of course, the day would not have been complete without the participation of the parade entrants, stallholders and entertainers, as well as the time given up by the volunteers, and for that, we are wholeheartedly grateful.

Latest News and Project Updates RECREATION GROUND SURVEY Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. Over 840 residents responded. We are currently collating the results which will inform future plans.

Interim summary of results included that the majority of residents said they visit the Recreation Ground to use the play area.

Top priorities for new facilities at the Recreation Ground included: Toilets, Café, Picnic Area and a Splash Pad. CHURCHILL RETIREMENT LIVING We understand that a decision on the second proposal for retirement apartments on land to the rear of the High Street will be considered by Wiltshire Council in the autumn.

CALNE SUMMER SKATE Despite a very wet launch day in July, our Summer Skate series took place on Tuesdays throughout the School Summer Holidays. The events were supported by Calne Town Council, GreenSquare Group, Hills Group and Calne Area Board.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT The Town Council, working with Calne Area Board has commissioned 12 weeks of youth engagement work which started in July 2019.

Youth Workers will be speaking with young people across the town and reporting back on their findings. This information will help identify future services in the town.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AUDITS On Tuesday 6th August, the Library & Hub, Town Hall and Community Information & Visitor Centre were visited by volunteers, carers and those living with Dementia, to carry out an audit of how accessible and dementia friendly public spaces are. An action plan will be developed and steps taken where feasible.

COMMUNITY UPDATE KINGSBURY GREEN ACADEMY OPENS ITS DOORS FOR THE FIRST TIME Students in Calne will step into the Kingsbury Green Academy Trust for the very first time, as the school is re-launched this month. The launch marks the huge transformation that has been delivered at the school over recent years.

That transformation goes far beyond the new name and image of the school, which were chosen by students and staff and has already led to the school becoming the number one most improved school in Wiltshire in 2018.

The new name was inspired by the historic school next to The Green in Calne, which used to be known as Kingsbury Green after the nearby Kingsbury Street.

The new school opens with a smart new uniform and logo which tells the story of the school’s ambition for its students.

On Tuesday 30th July, Calne Our Place launched their new tourism website VisitCalne.co.uk, in conjunction with VisitWiltshire and the Great West Way®.

The project has been completed after a successful grant was awarded to the group from the European Union and Calne Town Council.

CALNE LIONS BLOOD BIKE DONATION Year-round fundraising has allowed Calne Lions to achieve its goal of purchasing a Blood Bike for the Freewheelers EVS, a charity that provides free out-ofhours motorcycle courier services to hospitals in the South West of England.

An amazing total of £16,553 has been raised in total for the Freewheelers charity. A huge thank you to all of the volunteers and to the residents of Calne, who have shown incredible community spirit and generosity to such a great cause!
