TOWN MAYOR’S INTRODUCTION It is a great honour to be taking up the role as your Town Mayor and Chairman of the Council for 2019/2020. In my speech at Mayor Making I talked about my hopes for the year ahead. When I was Deputy Town Mayor last year, I worked together very closely with the former Town Mayor Cllr Glenis Ansell. We worked hard to build continuity and follow through ideas and initiatives that will benefit our community. I plan to carry on this new tradition, working closely with Calne’s Deputy Town Mayor Cllr Rich Jones. With a vision for Calne and the help of five creative students and one dedicated teacher from John Bentley School we made an advert to promote the town at its best. This is now live on social media. I would like to help build a stronger foundation for people to live, work, and open new businesses in Calne and encourage more local visitors on the Great West Way tourist route. I plan to work closely with our many dedicated community groups to help them fulfil their visions for Calne. This will start in June at the first Full Council meeting where we plan to declare a Climate Crisis and hopefully create a working party consisting of community groups and Councillors. The first task of this working group will be to develop an action plan to address these pressing issues.

The good causes I want to support this year are Dorothy House who take great care in looking after people in their final days either at home or in their beautiful hospice and Thrive at John Bentley School which works to help students with Mental Health issues. This is a silent illness and people do struggle to ask for help when they become adults, however, if some of the issues can be tackled at a younger age it may give the sufferer a better chance to learn the tools to tackle the illness in their adult life. Both are very worthwhile causes and with your support we want to raise much needed funds.

The Town Mayor’s events programme is out now, with all the dates of events going on over my year. These range from the Mayor’s Garden Party in August, to the ‘Proud of’ awards in March. The ‘Proud of’ awards are new for Calne. I would like you to nominate people who are the silent heroes. These could be Carers, Doctors, Nurses, Parents, Teachers, or Good Samaritans of any kind. CALNE CIVIC AWARDS 2019 Civic Awards are presented to people who have made an outstanding contribution to Calne. The Town Mayor also chooses young individuals, who have shown great talent in sports or the arts, to receive grants of up to £250.
HARRY COPCUTT - YOUNG CITIZENS AWARD WINNER Harry was awarded the Young Citizens award in recognition of the help he gave while volunteering at the Mayor’s Christmas Day lunch. Harry gave up time with his family so that he could be with us in the Town Hall on Christmas Day.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS The Calne in Bloom summer season is nearly here and the town will be soon full of planters, hanging baskets and flower beds full of colourful displays. Our local schools will be sending groups of pupils to work with the ground staff to plant up the tubs and plant towers. As well as all the seasonal bedding around the town we have areas which have sustainable, perennial flower beds, one of which is Town Gardens. A new volunteer group of “Gardening Potters” is being formed called ‘Colour for Calne’. Volunteers will be working on the Town Gardens which is in the middle of Calne to keep the plants deadheaded and tidy. We will meet some Tuesday mornings, starting in the middle of June, just a love of plants is needed. Please contact Rosemary on 01249 822510 for more information.
Cut and rake the long grass in September. Keep a corner of your garden completely UNDISTURBED at all times, letting native flora such as bramble or hawthorn provide impenetrable cover for small birds and snails. Please do not use slug pellets. They kill snails and go up through the food chain to kill hedgehogs. Please keep any ‘garden waste’, as this makes perfect wildlife habitat and should not be removed. Heap up the hedge clippings from an Autumn cut and put leaves on top. This is an ideal habitat for hedgehogs and costs nothing. See more at: www.bluecampaignhub.com

Welcome to a summary of Calne Town Council’s Annual Report for 2018/19. This report gives information about the Town Council, the money it spends and the activities it carries out. Jeannet Young Jeannette Director of Council Services

Councillors, elected for a four-year term. They are responsible for making key policy decisions and deciding on the Town Council’s spending plans and budget for the enancial year ahead. Meetings of the Full Town Council are held every two months. These are supported by three other committees: Policy & Resources, Amenities and Town Development & Planning
Calne Town Council employ Full time members of staff and 10 part time, alongside a team of CCTV Volunteers and casual bar staff for private events.

The Town Council manage the network of CCTV cameras, which cover the town centre.
The team of dedicated volunteers staff the Control Room at peak times throughout the week, working in partnership with the local police.
TOWN EVENTS During 2018, we organised our successful, major town events and introduced new unique events to Calne Town Hall, including the popular Psychic Medium Night!

Historically the Recreation Ground was built to provide a public pleasure ground and last year we received comments from a variety of members of the community wishing to have a more family orientated open space to enjoy. With this in mind, the Council has decided to ask the local community for their thoughts and views of what they would like to see and do at the Recreation Ground. CALNE BOWLS CLUB - COMMUNITY FEATURE During the summer of last year, the Calne Bowls Club Committee thought it might be a good idea to start a short mat bowls club in Calne during the winter, as there appeared to be interest from the members for this, but no club in Calne. Some members already played short mat, but outside the immediate area. After much searching, we found a home for us and our equipment at Beversbrook on Wednesday afternoons. We started on a shoestring with secondhand equipment and lots of enthusiasm. By the end of October 2018 there were 14 regular attendees, this is when we realised we had a success on our hands, and that the secondhand equipment was now not fit for our needs, showing signs of old age. Kevin and the Town Council helped us with a Sports England funding application for a grant to enable us to purchase 3 new mats and associated equipment, which should be delivered to us by the end of this month. Part of the grant was for advertising and we have made full use of that, advertising around the town and surrounding areas in various ways. Another part of the grant included money towards hall hire, which enabled us to have “taster” sessions on a Monday and increase the membership from the general public. To summarise, we currently have 2 afternoon sessions, 37 members and will be running through the summer. Some of our members will be on a “sabbatical” for the summer and only playing out of doors but happily returning to short mat in the Autumn. We believe there is a place in Calne for a short mat club, however without the backing of the Council, in particular Kevin, and the enthusiasm of the members, we could not have achieved what we now have a sociable club for enjoyable healthy exercise for all ages and abilities. TESCO BUS SERVICE Tesco are funding a bus service to and from the town centre. The route takes in much of the northern half of the town, and includes a stop near the Beversbrook Medical Centre. The purpose of the bus service is twofold. First to help residents who find it difficult to walk very far and/or do not have a car.
