TOWN MAYOR’S UPDATE Since becoming Town Mayor in May, I’ve been busy with meetings and civic events across the county. Calne’s first Shopping Week went really well and I’m indebted to the local shops and businesses for their support. The week-long schedule ended with a Gala Ball where we raised £2000 for my mayoral charities, JBS Music and Arts Department and the Calne Branch of the RBL. On Christmas Day, the Deputy Town Mayor and I hosted lunch in the Town Hall for people who are on their own or need help on Christmas Day, I’ve been overwhelmed with donations and offers of goods from our local shops - and the kind volunteers who gave their time to be with us on Christmas Day.
In 2019 I’m looking forward to more great events - starting off with the Wedding Fair at Calne Town Hall on February 16th and 17th. We have so much to celebrate in Calne, we have great shops, lovely people, amazing Christmas lights and our very own Eartunes Radio Station!

Nominations for the Civic Awards for this year are open until Friday 15th February. The awards categories are:
AWARDS
Town Mayor’s Civic Award Recognising the actions of an individual or couple for their hard work and endeavours for the Calne community.
Civic Awards are a celebration of people who have made an outstanding contribution to Calne.
Young Citizens Award Recognising the actions of a young person or group of young people that have had a positive impact on the town or its community. The award is open to all young people living in Calne aged 11 to 17.
The Town Mayor also chooses young individuals, who have shown great talent in sports or the arts, to receive grants of up to £250.
Town Mayor’s Gift Fund A grant of £250 to enable a young person who has demonstrated outstanding ability in sports or the arts to develop their skills. The award is open to all young people living in Calne aged 11 to 18. To nominate a local hero for an award please complete the nomination form available on our website www.calne.gov.uk. You can also email calne@calne.gov.uk, or visit the Calne Visitor & Information Centre.
The Town Mayor also awards a Young Citizen’s award to someone between the ages of 11 and 17, who has had a positive impact on Calne. The Civic Awards for 2019 will be presented at the Annual Parish Meeting of Calne on Friday 22nd March.

CALNE DEMENTIA FRIENDS COMMUNITY UPDATE
An event lookback from our Events & Weddings Liaison Officer Since taking the position as the Events & Weddings Liaison Officer for Calne Town Council, I really wanted to put my stamp on all events I was solely organising for the residents of Calne. Not only did I want to boost the profile on the event, but also increase involvement and footfall for local businesses throughout the town.
In 2018 I was able to organise a variety of events for Calne, including Calne Wedding Fair, Spring Sing, Summer Festival & Carnival, Psychic Medium Night, Bonfire & Fireworks Night, Remembrance Sunday Parade, Christmas Festival of Lights and Brunch with Santa. This was in addition to the amazing weddings which have taken place at Calne Town Hall. I’d like to give a special mention to 1st Choice Stairlifts who were our Headline Sponsor at the Christmas Festival of Lights! Also a huge thank you to all the other local businesses who sponsored the town events throughout 2018. The continued support allows us to bring bigger and better elements to the town events every year. All events have been met with such wonderful community spirit and have really shed light on further ideas to how the events in Calne can really be pushed higher, and really put our little market town on the map as a small town with a BIG heart!

Overall, 2019 is set to be just as fun, with more events being added to the social calendar to adhere to all likes, wants and needs. With hidden educational elements, fun, excitement and more imagination than 2018! If you’d like to help out at events, please get in touch, as without volunteer help on the day, these events would not be able to take place! Since Calne became the first community in Wiltshire to sign up to the Dementia Action Alliance, the group has been working to support people living with dementia and their carers to live safe and well, at home and in their own community for as long as possible. 14 community groups and businesses have signed up to the Dementia Action Alliance, which looks at how they can be more inclusive for people with dementia. Groups involved are looking at various changes that can be made, for example, signage, staff awareness and supporting the action plan of the DAA. Keeping active is very important for people with dementia. Therefore, Innov8Sport have supported us with arranging ‘Walk, Talk and Reminisce’ wellbeing walks around Calne. Volunteers from Calne, Calne Men’s Shed is making fidget boards, which are really useful to help people with dementia to feel calm and to reminisce. A group of ladies are knitting some sensory muffs, something which reduces anxiety in people with dementia. The next scheme the group is working on will try to encourage local hairdressers to become dementia friends and think about how they can help people live safe and well in the Calne Community! HILLS GROUP DONATION A big thank you to the Hills Group for their donation of around 10 tonnes of Warrior Compost to Calne’s flower beds. Stuart West, Head of Operations, said “Their input and help has been very much appreciated and will no doubt pay dividends in the quality of our floral displays and the 2020 entry into the RHS South West in Bloom competition.

Saturday 27th April - 10am-4pm
You can pick up an event schedule of choirs and locations nearer the event, with a variety of groups on throughout the day. The event will be rounded off with a heart-warming ‘Big Sing’ at the New Market Place, located at Phelps Parade, where everyone gathers for a group sing-along.
ADVANCE ROADWORKS WARNING Wiltshire Council has made an Order to close temporarily to all traffic: North Street (Part) Calne; from its junction with Dixon Way to its junction with Bryans Close Road. To enable Ringway to carry out the construction of a traffic calming feature. Alternative route via Bryans Close Road – Bishop Road – Dixon Way and vice versa. The closure and diversion route will be clearly indicated by traffic signs. This Order will come into operation on 18 February 2019 and the closure will be required until 01 March 2019.

Calne Spring Sing returns on Saturday 27th April, at multiple locations throughout Calne! The ever-popular event is now onto its sixth year, with groups descending upon Calne from the likes of Bristol, Bath, Swindon, Corsham and Chippenham.

A new event for 2019 is Musical Medley, being held on Saturday 6th July, in Calne Town Centre. The event adds to the popularity of Spring Sing. CURZON STREET CEMETERY – SAFETY AUDIT To comply with current Health and Safety regulations for Memorial Safety, an audit of headstones and other memorials was conducted in Curzon Street Cemetery on 26 and 27 November 2018. Memorials were tested by trained staff, and no mechanical devices were used. A number of memorials were laid flat to prevent injury to visitors. Please do not attempt to move memorials as this may result in injury to anyone in the area or damage to the memorial. CALNE SKATE BOWL USER GROUP Plans for Phase II of the skate park are to be reconsidered and a planning application will be submitted in the new year.

REDUCING SINGLE USE PLASTIC
NEW SCHEME LAUNCHES TO TACKLE PLASTIC POLLUTION IN CALNE Refill Calne, championed by River Clean Up’s Tamzyn Long and Calne Clean Up Crew’s Catherine Crofts, is on a mission to make refilling your water bottle as easy, convenient and cheap as possible, by introducing Refill Stations throughout Calne. An exciting Refill Scheme has launched in Calne which encourages participating cafes, bars, restaurants and other businesses to sign up to the free Refill app and put a sticker in their window alerting passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to fill up their bottle for free. The average adult buys more than 3 plastic water bottles every week - a startling 175 bottles every year per person. In total, some 7.7 billion plastic bottles are bought across the UK each year, resulting in substantial amounts of single-use plastic waste ending up in our oceans. Plastic pollution has sadly become synonymous with any activity, from surfing to swimming, beach holidays to wildlife watching, walking to cycling. There is an ambition for Calne as a town to become ‘Single Use Plastic Free’. The idea was suggested by a couple of community groups including Calne Clean Up Crew and River Clean Up which culminated in a showing of the Plastic Ocean film during the Mayor’s Shopping Week. A presentation will be made to the Full Town Council meeting on Monday 4 February where it is hoped that a pledge will be made and a community steering group setup. In the meanwhile these are some steps you can take: Refill - Check out the Refill Calne scheme, and get involved in the movement. See more to the left! Reduce - Discuss the use of singleuse plastic in your favourite cafe and challenge them to reduce their use of it. Wooden stirrers and reusable coffee cups make immediate positive impact.

RIVER WARRIORS CALNE Introducing the new movement of River Warriors at Colemans Farm Community Centre, Calne. Join in at either the Teens or Families & Childrens sessions for lots of activities, and to make an impact on your local environment!
Reuse - Remember to take your reusable bag each time you go shopping. Save yourself money and the environment in one action! Recycle - Make sure you recycle any single-use plastic bottles and containers you come into contact with. These can become new products! Don’t waste plastic! Refuse - Share the impact straws can have on local wildlife with friends and family and tell them to refuse a straw when ordering a drink. If it is a must, there are plenty of reusable versions available to take with them.
The scheme is organised by River Clean Up and Friends of Abberd Brook, and supported by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and Wiltshire Council.
Plastic Free Kit - such as bamboo toothbrushes, or reusable travel cutlery - gift these to friends and family to inspire them to tackle their plastic footprint.

COUNCIL TAX 2019/2020 Calne Town Council agreed our Budget for 2019/2020 with a nil increase in the Band D cost of £210.31 and a Precept requirement of £1,273,530. This will form part of the Council Tax Bill administered and made by Wiltshire Council. NEW TOWN BUS SERVICE Are you making the most of the Town Bus Service? - now serving North and South Calne.
