CALNE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL SATURDAY 1 DECEMBER 2018 OF LIGHTS 12pm-6pm ST
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a wonderful day at this year’s Calne Christmas Festival of Lights! Held on Saturday December 1st from 12noon to 6pm there will be plenty for all the family to enjoy, so make sure you wrap up warm and make the most of the festivities! Why not come along and watch the stunning red and gold stilt walking Christmas Belles, chuckle with the runaway Christmas tree fairy as she campaigns to have Christmas twice a year, to save her from her fate of being shut away for 50 weeks a year. Local traders will line the town centre and the Town Hall, so there’s plenty to browse and sample including Christmas gifts, sweet treats & even a Christmas tipple…or two. Check out just some of the things going on throughout the town, during our 12 Days of Christmas themed festival and lantern parade! - Stalls throught the town centre - Entertainment acts throught the day - Reindeer Petting - Craft Market in the Town Hall - Santa’s Grotto - Funfair from Jenning’s - Live radio broadcasts from BBC Wiltshire and Eartunes - Calne Spring’s Market - Christmas Choir Event in the Town Hall - Lantern Parade - Finishing with a firework finale!
SANTA’S GROTTO REQUEST If you are crazy for Christmas or have a flare for decorating, why not get involved with helping decorate the community Santa’s Grotto. From Wednesday 18th November, Events Officer Erin, will be asking for volunteers to help turn the Council Chamber of the Town Hall into a magical Christmas grotto for the children to enjoy during the winter festivities of the Christmas Festival! Father Christmas will be joining us for 4 days from 28th November! If you’d like to get involved, please contact calne@calne.gov.uk LANTERN WORKSHOPS Lantern Workshops will be held in the Town Hall pending interest. The display forms part of the events held to recall and pay respect to the 100 year anniversary since World War One. Poppies depicting the school children’s relatives that fought in the wars as well as all those mentioned on the memorial at St Mary’s Church.

S N O I T C E N N O C Y T I N U M M O C G N I D L BUI Building on the success of the first BCC event in June the showcase took place on Saturday 15th September in the Town Hall. This celebrated the amazing work of local charities and community groups and allowed local residents to find out more about the range of services and activities on offer. Local groups represented included Calne Day Centre (Monday Club), Alzheimer’s Society (Chippenham branch), Calne Bowls Club, Calne Community Fairtrade Group, Calne Community Transport, Chippenham & District Talking Newspapers, Home Start Kennett, Chippenham & District Social Singles Club, Calne Lions. Community Hub, Calne in Tune and CARP.

CALNE CLEAN UP CREW GOING FOR GOLD Catherine Crofts, who formed Calne Clean Up Crew has been shortlisted for the Environment Award as part of Gazette and Herald’s Wiltshire Community Pride Awards. The awards were revealed on 26th October, best of luck to Cath and the Calne Clean Up Crew! You can join in by taking the pledge to help clean up Calne!

We are proud to be part of the new tourist route linking London to Bristol and look forward to welcoming new visitors to our town. JOHN BENTLEY SCHOOL UPDATE I am in the privileged position, as Principal, of being able to tell you about the fantastic achievements of JBS students this summer at both A level and GCSE. Our Sixth Form students achieved phenomenal results once again this year and have surpassed expectations. It gives all the staff at JBS enormous pride to know that we now have young people from Calne studying at some of the most prestigious universities in the country including Exeter, Bristol, Nottingham and Birmingham to name but a few!
I am sure you will join me in congratulating the brilliant hard working JBS staff, who went above and beyond most schools’ expectations to support and encourage the young people in our care. Calne is lucky to have such a gifted team of professionals.
At GCSE, I hope you have seen the celebratory banners dotted around the town and outside the school, or you have seen the photo below, as this has appeared in the press and across social media. For me, the photo captures the magical feeling the JBS community felt on GCSE results day, when our wonderful students opened their envelopes.
However, JBS is not a school to dwell too long on the past and already we are looking to the future. We believe that we have the capacity to make even greater improvements as a school and are striving to deliver a first class education for all our current students. DEVOLUTION FROM WILTSHIRE COUNCIL TO CALNE TOWN COUNCIL Wiltshire Council is looking to devolve responsibility for many of the services it currently provides. These include things such as maintenance of grass verges; litter bin provision and litter picking; removal of fly tipping; leaf clearance; bollards, benches bins; balancing ponds and streams. It is unlikely that any funding would come for these from Wiltshire Council. Calne Town Council has not yet been asked to enter into negotiations, but when these start your Town Councillors will be seeking to understand the true cost so that any impact on the local Council Tax bill is considered fully. CALNE IN BLOOM AWARDED SILVER GILT Calne was awarded a Silver Gilt in the RHS South West in Bloom awards, held in Yeovil on Thursday 4th October.

We have our own Calne in Bloom awards, being held on 25th October in the Town Hall. We look forward to seeing all the entrants there!
We thank all the people that were involved, from our ground staff and it’s your neighbourhood entries, including Methodist Church, Holy Trinity Church, Marden House, Calne Free Church, CARP Councillor Heather Canfer Chairman of Calne in Bloom for Castlefields, Beversbrook, Calne Bowls Club, Calne Heritage Centre, Abberd Brook, Page Close and the Mill Race Activity Club. Two schools aslso entered St. Edmunds and Holy Trinity. It’s a huge undertaking to get ready for judging day and I want to thank everyone involved for all their efforts, with the amazing challenges that this Summer has brought.
