In addition, the thriving town has an energetic business community with some of the state’s leading service institutions. State institutions such as the Missouri School for the Deaf and the Fulton State Hospital have been critical for Fulton’s stable economy for more than 165 years. Together, they employ more than 1,400 people. The Fulton State Hospital, which is the oldest mental hospital west of the Mississippi River, moved into a new state-of-the-art $210 million campus in Fall of 2019. Callaway County, who just celebrated its 200th birthday, showcases evidence of growth and progression all around the county. In addition to the construction of the new Fulton State Hospital campus, such successes are notable such as the revitalization of the Fulton Brick District. Including in the quaint Brick District is the Brick District Playhouse, a 1920s-era landmark theatre that, since its official opening in 2018, has hosted cultural and performing arts events. Progress is also seen through the continued entrepreneurial growth stimulated by the Show-Me Innovation Center as well as the county’s growth of several large businesses over the decade that exceeds the state average by 100 percent. One of those large businesses, Callaway Nuclear Energy Center, has created an ongoing impact in the county with its annual payroll of $100 million and revenue generation of $3 billion. The Callaway Nuclear Energy Center is also 1 of 20 manufacturers in Callaway County. The county offers an expanding manufacturing base evidenced by new job creation at seven local industries during the past 4 years. Harbison Walker International is evidence of the continuous manufacturing growth in the community by creating a $1.9 million dollar expansion in Fulton; retaining 70 jobs, and increasing by two dozen more jobs in the county. Along with a vivacious business community and ever-growing manufacturing sector, Callaway County’s education is also quite notable. Fulton’s Westminster College and William Woods University both have rich reputations – William Woods for its internationally recognized equestrian studies program and Westminster for its Green Lecture Series which attracts leaders to the Fulton campus to discuss foreign policy issues. The most notable speaker in this series was former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, whose famous “Iron Curtain” speech in 1946 will forever be a pillar in the Fulton community. Churchill’s speech is commemorated on the Westminster campus today by the National Churchill Museum and 32-foot-long section of the Berlin Wall call “Breakthrough”, which is viewed by more than 20,000 visitors annually. Additional great leaders would come to the Fulton campus such as Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, among others. Since its founding in 1820, Callaway County has been an agricultural-based community with a rich history. The county’s outlying communities such as New Bloomfield, Auxvasse, Williamsburg, Mokane, Millersburg, Holts Summit, Portland, and Kingdom City have rich agricultural pedigrees that support farming operations for beef cattle and crop production – primarily corn, soybeans, and wheat. Even despite a global pandemic that swept our county by storm, 2020 has still provided Callaway County with the resources and tools to be a strong and resourceful county. And we know in 2021, all of the communities in Callaway County will come together to celebrate the advancements and continued achievements of the county and showcase its fruitful growth. We partner with many businesses, organizations, and individuals to make this mission possible in Callaway County. We hope you use this magazine as a guide to help you shop small businesses, eat locally, and find recreation activities for the whole family. Our businesses are the heart of Callaway County. As we all know, 2020 has been a different road to navigate for not only the Chamber, but our local businesses. I want to personally give my appreciation to all of the businesses who fought tireless to keep their staff and customers safe through the pandemic and are continuously doing so today. I also want to say “thank you” to Callaway County for working fast to help our small business community during this time as they pivoted from their normal way of life, to this much different, new way of life. And we cannot express enough gratitude for the numerous partnerships we have been able to utilize this year, to ensure that Callaway County businesses were receiving the assistance and information they needed as soon as possible. Meet Your Chamber
Tamara Tateosian is the Executive Director of the Callaway Chamber of Commerce. Prior to holding her current position as Executive Director, Tamara has held many positions in the Chamber industry including Assistant to Economic Development, Membership and Marketing Director, and Director of Operations at her previous employer the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce in Arkansas. Since being hired to lead the Callaway Chamber of Commerce in November 2015, Tamara and the Chamber team have celebrated many successes. Those include: implementation of the monthly Business Breakfast, start-up of the Annual Show-Me Innovation Pitch Competition, Annual County Wide Teachers Appreciation Breakfast, National Manufacturing Day Celebration, welding program, workforce development initiatives for current workforce and students, educational training for business owners and staff, redesigned Leadership Callaway program, new business recruitment and business retention. Such progressions, such as the Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, have yielded great recognition which includes being presented with the Award of Excellence from the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri. Tamara spends her days working to build strong partnerships for our community with organizations such as the Missouri Job Center, Central Workforce Investment Board, Missouri Women’s Business Center, school districts in Callaway County, local, state and federal agencies, and the business community. She proudly serves on the Bright Futures Fulton Board of Directors, state appointed to the Central Missouri Workforce Development Board and the Missouri Women’s Business Center Advisory Board. She is a past board member for the Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce Executives and the Arkansas Chamber of Commerce Executives. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and holds certifications as a Six-Sigma Green Belt in Problem Solving, Lean Manufacturing, and mediation and facilitation. Her mission is to make Callaway County a better place by driving economic development initiatives, education, and workforce. Justis Smith, Marketing and Special Events Coordinator for the Callaway Chamber of
Commerce and Callaway County native, graduated from South Callaway High School in Mokane in 2014. Upon graduation, she began her college career at William Woods University in Fulton where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. She was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the Communication Studies honor society of the National Communication Association, and was also a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, the nation’s largest leadership honor society. Prior to her position with the Chamber, Justis worked at Veterans United Home Loans in Columbia as an Assistant Loan Officer. As an Assistant Loan Officer, Justis worked directly under two Loan Officers while maintaining a high level of detail and organization as she communicated with Veteran borrowers throughout their home loan process. As the Chamber’s Marketing and Special Events Coordinator, Justis plans and executes several large events through the year, including Town and Country, Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, Golf Tournament, and Annual Banquet. In addition, she markets the Chamber by telling “their story” through economic and workforce development, education, and community initiatives. Justis is also an avid volunteer, volunteering with Out of the Darkness Community Walks, Project Homeless Connect and Voluntary Action Center. In addition to her volunteer work, Justis is also a member of the Callaway County Salvation Army Board. Through her position at the Chamber and community involvement, Justis strives to build community for business and family.
Shane Moriarty, Shane Moriarity started as the Business Relationship Manager for the Callaway Chamber of Commerce on March 2nd. Prior to his position at the Chamber, Shane formally worked for the Central Workforce Development Board as a Project Manager, which equipped him with skills and experience that is not commonly found. In Shane’s previous role, he was responsible for outreach, recruitment, and marketing of the Health Profession Opportunity Grant. He also gained extensive knowledge of all workforce development programs at the State Level and created the first apprenticeship standards sponsored by the Central Region and approved by the Department of Labor. Shane is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hiking, hunting, and fishing. He enjoys time with his family and playing with his grandkids. 8

After some questions in years past about the financial health and well-being of Callaway County’s only hospital, 2020 proved to be a turning point in its stability and outlook for the future. Combined with additions to the list of specialists available in Fulton, Holts Summit and Auxvasse and a pending ownership change in one of the region’s largest health care systems, the health of the Callaway County health care industry is looking better than it has in years.
Callaway Community Hospital
Fulton Medical Center operates as a 37-bed acute care facility in the heart of Callaway County, while currently offering 24 hour emergency room and laboratory services, CT, Ultrasound, DEXA Scans, X-rays, Physical Therapy, Cardiology, Rheumatology, Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Services. The Hospital also houses a 19bed short-term acute inpatient Geriatric Psychiatric Unit; Kingdom Senior Solutions. The unit provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for individuals ages 55 and older who are experiencing emotional, cognitive, or behavioral symptoms. In this unit we understand that caring for a loved one can be overwhelming and at times too much to manage alone; that’s why we partner with you to make the future brighter for you and your loved one. In December 2019, Fulton Medical Center took on a new management group; Noble Health Corporation, Headquartered in Kansas City, MO. Noble Health is focused on immediately stabilizing and upgrading the hospital. Plans to introduce new services including Infusions, Dialysis, Surgery and Telemedicine are already underway for 2020. The facility is also in the works of being rebranded; which will roll out sometime in March 2020. Noble Health’s vision is a world where rural residents have access to essential medical care in their community, for both short and long term care. We see the need to address local concerns first, and to meet community health needs no matter how complex. We believe that meeting the needs of families and seniors are vital to 10

University of Missouri Family Medicine – Callaway Physicians
The University of Missouri Callaway Physicians offers Family Medicine and Specialty Outreach Services in Fulton at 110 Hospital Drive. The Family Medicine Clinic offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Lab hours from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Outreach Services for Heart and Vascular are offered from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Wednesdays, and Nephrology is available from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays. University of Missouri Physical Therapy
University of Missouri Health Care’s Mizzou Therapy Services, located within the YMCA of Callaway County, offers outpatient physical therapy to people of all ages. Sarah Moore, DPT, has a clinical background in complex diagnoses and injuries from both the hospital and outpatient settings. She is experienced in orthopedic and athletic conditions, as well as pelvic health and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Mizzou Therapy Services is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday at 1715 Wood Street in Fulton. Fulton State Hospital
Fulton State Hospital is the oldest State Psychiatric Hospital west of the Mississippi. The hospital is certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and has been accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) since 1984.

Healthcare Fulton State Hospital underwent a dramatic change recently that will impact the services the hospital provides. The new $211 Million stateof-the-art facility has revolutionized the services provided to the clients served. Fulton State Hospital consists of treatment units for high security patients (300 beds), individuals with developmental disabilities (24 beds), and the Sexual Offender Rehabilitation and Treatment Services (SORTS) program (125 beds). The Nixon Forensic Center opened, Biggs Forensic Center closed and clients from there and Guhleman Forensic Center moved into the new facility. The hospital will continue to maintain the 22-bed minimum security Hearnes Forensic Center in a separate building on campus.

Education Opportunities Abound
With two prominent small colleges, four public school districts and two Christian schools, Callaway County offers many education opportunities for its residents. William Woods University and Westminster College are both four-year institutions with low student to faculty ratios and diverse student populations. Public Schools in Fulton, New Bloomfield and North and South Callaway County keep students focused by keeping them close to home for their pre-K through 12th grade education. Kingdom Christian Academy provides a curriculum for kindergarten through 12th grade school, and Saint Peter Catholic school offers a faith-based educational opportunity to students in grades pre-k2 through 8th.
Fulton Public Schools
Fulton School District encompasses 106 square miles and serves a population of 17,000 people. The district enrolls 2,200 students and operates six school sites: three elementary buildings (grades K-5), a middle school (grades 6-8), a high school (grades 9-12) and Fulton Early Childhood Center. The district is noted for its strong academic program and its continuing commitment to excellence. Fulton Public Schools offers a wide variety of programs to ensure students come FIRST: • Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) are programs used throughout the District. • Fulton Public Schools provides Chrome Book computers for EACH student to use in K-12. • Class sizes are at or below state standards in all grade levels. • Two mental health professionals are available district-wide to help with social and emotional problems some students may have. New Bloomfield R-III Public Schools
In 1967, a new high school was opened in Kingdom City for students from Auxvasse, Hatton-McCredie, and Williamsburg to attend. The Thunderbird became the official mascot of North Callaway High School and the school colors were designated as Kelly green and white. South Callaway R-II School District
The consolidation of 18 separate school districts in 1957 resulted in the creation of the South Callaway R-II School District. In August, 1959, students began school in a newly constructed brick and concrete building which served elementary and high school students. Over the next 20 years, additions of classrooms, offices and a gymnasium were made. Construction of a separate high school building was completed in 1982. The high school complex provided a modern cornerstone for an emerging campus which includes various athletic fields and facilities. In

Callaway 200 Happening In 2021
Celebrations of Callaway County’s 200th Anniversary in 2020 were all adjusted or postponed due to concerns about Covid-19. The Callaway 200 Committee managed to proceed with some of their plans in outdoor settings and one major event was rescheduled for 2021. The North Jefferson Katy trailhead just south of Holts Summit was the site of the first of two bicentennial monument dedications. On Monday, November 16, citizens of Boone, Callaway, and Cole Counties gathered at a new monument commemorating the organization of the three counties: Boone and Cole on November 16 and Callaway on November 25 of 1820. All three became official counties on January 1, 1821. County commissioners and bicentennial committees from the three counties coordinated the tri-county effort and Central Bank sponsored the monument. Historian Bob Priddy entertained the audience with his research about the early days of each county. Other speakers included Governor Mike Parson, who accepted a 24-star American flag to help kick off Missouri’s bicentennial in 2021, the three presiding commissioners, and Carol Comer, Director of Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources. The Callaway bicentennial monument, a smaller version of the tri-county monument, was unveiled and dedicated on the Callaway County

Courthouse lawn on Wednesday, November 25. Gracia Backer delivered a message that wove together reflections on Callaway’s past, present, and future. Callaway County sponsored the monument, which features historic county information. The Kingdom Philatelic Association and the local post office developed a special “cancel” that was available at the event. Several communities, organizations, and businesses honored the Bicentennial during 2020. For example, the Williamsburg Ladies Club held a quilt show in August. On display were the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society’s 25-block Bicentennial Quilt along with quilts designed by 4th grade students at New Bloomfield and St. Peter’s Schools. In October, Serenity Valley Winery held Bicentennial Day which featured two special edition anniversary wines. 45 teams completed a 20-site scavenger hunt for significant Callaway landmarks during a six-week period ending in November. The route included locations scattered throughout the county. The event developed by Kelly Borman was co-sponsored by the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society and Callaway 200. Two popular series of Facebook posts have featured Callaway County. Callaway Then and Now has been
posted every Thursday on the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society Facebook page and shared by Callaway 200 so followers of either site can enjoy it. KCHS members Judy Schaneman and Sharon Davis visited sites around the county that were on postcards in the early 1900’s. They took a current photo of the site and displayed the postcard and the modern view, along with a brief description of the property’s history. Thanks to the collections of KCHS and the late Willie Boyd, they have many Fulton postcards and some from around the county. The main event, the Bicentennial Bash, was first scheduled for May, then August, and was finally rescheduled for August 28, 2021. It will feature music by Shenandoah and will fold into Missouri’s celebration of its bicentennial in 2021. COVID-19 did its best to spoil Callaway’s anniversary, but through patience and ingenuity Callawegians found meaningful ways to honor their past.

Callaway County Full of Sights and Entertainment Auto World Museum, Fulton Auto World displays nearly 80 vehicles from the private collection of Mr. Bill Backer, who founded Backer’s Potato Chip Company in 1931. The family carries on his tradition and passion. The oldest vehicle in the collection is a 1903 Humbrette. The cars are set in vignettes that include huge prints of historic scenes and nearly full scale building facades. History Channel’s “American Pickers” purchased a 1929 Roadster from the Backer family and transported it down a 100 year old elevator in a building located in Fulton’s historic Brick District. Missouri Firefighters Memorial in Kingdom City
On May 18, 2002, the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri dedicated a sculpture and wall of honor in memory of firefighters lost in the line of duty. Memorial services are held each May. The original statue of a kneeling firefighter in prayer was in customs at

Kennedy Airport enroute to Missouri on September 11, 2001. Measuring more than six feet tall and 3,000 pounds, the statue quickly became a local symbol of grief. The Fire Fighters Memorial Foundation, in cooperation with Dave DeCarlo of Matthews International Corporation, arranged to dedicate the statue to the New York Fire Department on September 19, 2001. In addition to the statue, the area boasts a 12,000 square foot shell for a museum and training center for the Missouri Firefighters. Additional fundraising is needed to finish the inside to make it usable for events and displays in the future. More recently, the Memorial recorded their 18th Annual Memorial Service in early October and released it to the public on October 11th. Three Line Of Duty Death fatalities from 2019 and 59 additional firefighters that died during the year were honored at this ceremony. Additionally, 39 names were added to the Memorial’s walls of firefighters that passed away and served a minimum of 10 active years in the fire service. The Memorial Service for 2021 is planned for May 15-16th in Kingdom City.

National Churchill Museum in Fulton
On March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill traveled with President Harry Truman to Westminster College, in Fulton, Missouri. Churchill’s address that day was entitled “Sinews of Peace.” It became known as the “Iron Curtain Speech” and harbinger of the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union. www. nationalchurchillmuseum.org Westminster College sought to mark the 20th anniversary of the address by moving the Church of St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, from London to Fulton. The church, which was designed by Christopher Wren, had stood in London since 1677, until it was hit by an

incendiary bomb in World War II. Stone masons, woodcarvers and artisans from around the world traveled to Fulton to reconstruct the church stone by stone, from 1964 - 1969. The grounds feature the Breakthrough sculpture. It is carved from slabs of the Berlin Wall by Churchill’s granddaughter, Edwina Sandys. Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Sandys traveled to Berlin hoping to purchase sections of the wall. When officials became aware of her goal, they donated eight sections from near the Brandenburg Gate. President Ronald Reagan dedicated the sculpture, November 9, 1990, 44 years after Churchill had warned of the descending iron curtain. The site has been visited by numerous dignitaries, including Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev. The church houses the most extensive Churchill collection in North America. The Berlin Wall divided Germany for 28 years (1961-1989.) “Breakthrough” has stood in Fulton since 1990 - 30 years. The West German side was covered in colorful graffiti including the word “Unwar,” meaning lies or untruths.

In contrast, the East German side’s stark, gray concrete gives testament to the confinement and peril of life behind walls. The National Churchill Museum took advantage of the downtime caused by the pandemic to make some necessary upgrades to the museum for preservation. The newly renovated museum is tentatively scheduled for reopening in Fall of 2021 for tours.
Serenity Valley Winery
Visitors experience the art and science of wine making, bottling and labeling in a tranquil lakeside vineyard with a stop at Serenity Valley Winery. Located on State Road J just south of Millersburg, the winery is easy to reach from I-70 or US Highway 54. Stocked with bass, bluegill, blue catfish and small crappie, this is a 200-acre lake located 10 miles to the west of Fulton. The area also includes nature trails and designated areas for hunting. Little Dixie Conservation Area is open year round, but is closed daily between the overnight hours of 10pm to 4am.
Mark Twain National Forest
The 16,000 acres of forest area in western Callaway County features Dry Fork Recreation Area, a campground and picnic area located at the equestrian trail head of the 36-mile Cedar Creek Trail that traverses between oak and hickory forests and tall grass prairie. Some sections are
open to foot and mountain bike only. Other sections allow horses. The campground is surrounded by oak and cedar and features 8 single primitive campsites that can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet in length, each with table, fire ring, and lantern post.

Prairie Fork Conservation Area
Prairie Grove Shotgun Sports is located in Callaway County, near Columbia, Missouri. Full-facility shotgun sports club, offering a multitude of shooting sports: American skeet, Modern skeet, International skeet, trap, trap doubles, modified international trap, two five-stand facilities, Make-A-Break and two sporting clays courses offering 48+ shooting stations. Includes tower shooting, which must be reserved in advance.
Prairie Fork Conservation Area is a 711-acre area that was donated to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) by Hilda (Pat) Jones in 1997. At the time of the donation, the Prairie Fork Trust was also created to provide oversight and additional funding for activities related to natural resource education, restoration, management and research. The Prairie Garden Trust, or PGT, is a gem of place where you can enjoy the beauty of nature. Stroll through woods and prairie, along ponds and streams to see the ever-changing plants and the birds, butterflies, mammals and more that live here. They call it a nature garden because it has the beauty of native plants without the messiness of nature untended. The “displays” vary by season: flowering dogwood, redbud, Virginia bluebells and phlox in the early spring, then purple coneflowers and butterfly weed as the prairie blooms in June with blazing star and lotus in July. Come out to the farm, and experience a corn maze, hayrides, campfires, a pumpkin patch (pick your own), and gumball coaster! It’s all part of the fun at Shryock’s Callaway Farms, located along I-70 west of Kingdom City and East of Columbia. Shryocks’ Big Red Barn is a familiar landmark to visitors in the Midwest and houses the most popular attraction on the farm – a three-story, one-of-a-kind gumball coaster. Stinson Creek Trail
Join the hundreds of joggers, walkers, and bikers of all ages who make the Stinson Creek Trail one of the most popular recreational features in the city of Fulton. More than 7 miles of paved trail follow Stinson Creek as it winds through the

Take a rest under the bluffs of Lover’s Leap and cross over unique landmarks such as a scenic covered bridge and a 129 year-old, iron railroad bridge. The trail is a city of Fulton project. Park hours are 6:00am to 12:00am daily.
Terra Bella Farm
Located about twenty minutes from Columbia, Missouri and just under a hundred miles from St. Louis, Terra Bella Farm is 160 acres of mixed pasture, creek, and woods, with 12 acres of produce, herbs, and flowers. They strive to provide high quality food to fuel local communities, our hard working apprentices, our extended families, and ourselves. They also operate the Missouri Grain Project, with soft wheat pastry berries and flour for bakers. Community outreach such as leading educational farm tours and hosting nonprofit groups for concerts and educational events is vital to their longterm farming goals and their commitment to being a socially-responsible business. They are also home to the mid-Missouri Barn Quilt project and offer classes in the arts and writing.
Tucker Prairie Conservation Area
See the last sizeable remnant of Missouri’s “Grand Prairie” that once covered large areas of 10 counties in northeast and central Missouri. Marvel at over 200 native plant species. Look and listen for grassland birds including the dickcissel, Henslow’s sparrow, field sparrow, northern bobwhite, blue grosbeak, eastern kingbird, and eastern meadowlark.

Enjoy a day in the sun at the City of Fulton Waterworks Splashpad located at Veterans Park in Fulton. Open in May, the splashpad features several water jets, fountains, and obstacles to cool off and enjoy on a summer’s day. Enjoy a picnic at the splashpad or the at the covered picnic tables accompanying the splashpad. There is no admission fee for the splashpad and it is open daily 10AM to 9PM from May to September.

Tanglewood Golf Course
18 holes of golf on a par-72 regulation course with 6,883+ yards. Course rating is 73.4, slope rating is 134. Course has a daily fee and offers an “Open to the Public” guest policy. All military veterans, active personnel and National Guardsmen enjoy Salute to Military Service on Tuesdays during June, July and August. Whetstone Creek Conservation Area
Whetstone Creek has its headwaters in former prairie plains to the west. Here it down cuts through Mississippian and Devonian period limestones. This small third order stream consists of short, well-defined riffles and long, deep pools. Chert gravel occurs in the riffles and pool bottoms consist of sands and silts. The stream supports over 20 native fish species including the blacknose shiner, a species of conservation concern. The blacknose shiner depends on goodquality stream habitat without excessive siltation and turbidity. Because the upper

Did you know? Callaway County was organized in November 1820 and named for Captain James Callaway, grandson of Daniel Boone. The first settlement to come to Callaway County was of French descent. They settled in Cote Sans Dessein located along the Missouri River. This settlement no longer exists today. The present-day county seat was originally named Volney. It was then renamed Fulton after Robert Fulton who created the first commercial steamboat.

2021 Chamber Events
The year 2020 was different for the Callaway Chamber of Commerce. In March, stores and restaurants were shut down and the world slowed to a crawl. And even though in-person events were being put on hold, the Chamber was still busy at work, supporting and creating awareness for the business community and workforce efforts. In 2019, the Chamber held 79 events and in 2020, the number seemed to dwindle. However, the Chamber pivoted with perseverance and moved most of their events to a virtual setting to ensure the message of building community for business and family was still reaching the Callaway County community. “Adaption is key. We could have sat around and kicked around ideas for the future, but we knew we had to be in the present and adapt our current agenda to fit what our business community needed now.” Executive Director, Tamara Tateosian.

When we were able to gather again in small groups at a safe distance, the Chamber continued with ribbon cutting and groundbreaking celebrations because we love to celebrate milestones and achievements with our members! In 2020, the Chamber participated in 11 ribbon cutting and groundbreaking celebrations – one being in partnership with Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce and Columbia Chamber of Commerce for a tri-county ribbon cutting to reveal a monument dedicated to all three counties. The Chamber also gathered the

This 14 day event starts on February 1st and ends on February 14th with its mission to create awareness of local businesses in Callaway County while giving the community the opportunity to win great Valentine’s Day prizes donated by Callaway County businesses. A different prize is featured each day on our Facebook page and the community can win the prizes by liking, sharing, and commenting on the post. A winner is chosen by random draw on Facebook live the following day.
Business Expo

At the Chamber, we want our businesses to exceed and make great strides in our County; and we know that workforce and clientele is an important aspect in that success. To help our members with that, we host a Business Expo in the Spring to kick off the new year! This is an opportunity for our members to showcase their businesses, products, services, and employment opportunities to the community. The community and fellow businesses also have the opportunity to vote on the “Best Booth”. The booth with the most votes wins a special prize! This year, however, we were not able to host our Business Expo in the normal sense. For many months we researched ideas on how we could get the word out about our businesses and create awareness for them while still providing a networking opportunity. The idea finally came to do as we have being doing all along, and take the event virtual! In 2020, we launched our first ever Virtual BEE-Connected Business Expo with help from our Community partner the City of Fulton! All businesses who signed up for the expo were placed on a special
section of our website and those who were interested, had a short 3-4-minute video created with information about their business! In each video was a secret word which gave way to a secret phrase. People could watch the videos in the safety of their home and submit the secret phrase when all videos were watched. One lucky participant won a $1,000 Callaway County shopping spree, just in time for the holidays! A second lucky participant won $100 from Central Bank! The purpose of the Callaway County Teachers Reception is to add to the excitement of the new school year and celebrate and show community support for our educators and teachers throughout the county. This event, which encompasses many aspects of community involvement, is to show our teachers and educators in the workplace that we support them in all they do for our leaders of the future! Entrepreneurs play an important role in the community, and the Chamber wants to help set the foundation for them to succeed in our County. To do that, the Chamber hosts the Show-Me Innovation PITCH Competition. The competition, open to the public, allows individuals to “pitch” their business idea, whether it is for a new business or a business expansion. A panel of expert judges will listen to each pitch and determine a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner.
“The Pitch Competition was a great asset for small business in Callaway County; the resources offered from the Chamber are phenomenal from the networking received and just getting your business out there. For us it was a dream come true. The following we have received and extra business generated by it has been more than we ever expected. Since winning, the support from the Chamber and community has been amazing, the staff at the Chamber are just amazing and go above and beyond. We are not your traditional business and have more of a niche market, but entered the PITCH competition with the thought of ‘what do we have to lose and look at what we have to gain’. This 3 week event takes place on December 1st and is completed the week before Christmas. This one hour virtual event is a great way to get to know the city and community leaders and officials in Callaway County and to also hear updates from them regarding the community. Chamber History of Callaway Ambassadors The concept of Chamber Ambassadors came to Callaway County in 1989. The idea was to have professional community leaders represent the Chamber at important Chamber and community events. The initial group was carefully chosen as a cross representation of business, government, and education. Many were still very active in their careers while others were close to retirement and could attend functions more easily. About 20 members were initially chosen and agreed to purchase jackets that would be easily recognizable when they appeared. Thus, causing many community members to refer to them as the “red coats”. The initial group then voted to replace someone who resigned and after a few years voted to add to their numbers creating around 30 active Ambassadors. This group was respected and maintained their genuine support of the Chamber throughout their service, many also became very good friends. Their countless hours of service were vital to the growth and respect the Chamber held in the community. (Courtesy of Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society). Now with passing of time, the jackets are gone but the spirit and can-do attitude still resides in our Chamber Ambassadors. Frequently you will see them at ribbon cuttings where they celebrate business milestones, or you will see them advocating for the Chamber and recruiting businesses to join. Additionally, you will see them cheering the Chamber on at events where they are always eager to lend a helping hand.
