WELCOME TO CALLAWAY COUNTY

Welcome to Callaway County!

With more than 200 years of rich history, Callaway County is a wonderful place to live, visit, and build a business. While we are proud of our heritage, we are also continuously pursuing opportunities for innovation and improvement, working every day to create one of mid-Missouri’s most vibrant and progressive communities.

Nestled in the heart of Missouri, Callaway County offers the perfect blend of small-town charm and big-city convenience. Residents and visitors alike enjoy access to outstanding education, healthcare, entertainment, shopping, and outdoor recreation. Our central location provides easy access to two nearby metropolitan areas—Columbia and Jefferson City—both less than 25 miles away.

Fulton – The Heart of Callaway County

Fulton, the county seat, is home to nearly 13,000 residents and serves as a growing entrepreneurial and cultural hub. The community features one college and one university, historic properties and landmarks, unique restaurants and cafés, and vibrant parks and recreational spaces. Fulton’s thriving business community includes some of Missouri’s leading service institutions.

The Missouri School for the Deaf and Fulton State Hospital have played a critical role in the local economy for more than 165 years, together employing over 1,400 people. In 2019, Fulton State Hospital opened a state-of-theart, $210 million campus, further solidifying its role as a cornerstone of the community.

Revitalization and Growth

Growth and progress are visible throughout Callaway County, with the revitalized Fulton Brick District standing as a shining example. In 2022, the Brick District received the Pathfinder Award at the Missouri Governor’s Conference on Tourism for its popular Morels and Microbrews Festival. What began in 2012 with just 300 attendees has grown to more than 3,000 attendees, featuring 450 pounds of morels, 20 breweries, and the support of 50 dedicated volunteers.

Adding to the Brick District’s charm are special enhancements, including two vibrant murals that celebrate the creativity and character of the community. These eye-catching works of art have become favorite photo spots for visitors and locals alike. Guests are invited to stroll the district, snap a picture, and enjoy shopping at a variety of unique retail options

that make the Brick District a lively and welcoming destina-tion.

Another local gem, the Brick District Playhouse, a 1920s-era landmark theatre, continues to thrive. Since its grand reopening in 2018, it has hosted a wide variety of cultural and performing arts events.

Entrepreneurial growth is supported by the Callaway Chamber of Commerce and the county’s strong manufacturing sector. Over the past decade, job creation in Callaway County has exceeded the state average by 100%. Callaway County is home to several long-standing manufacturers that reflect the strength and stability of its economy, including Backer Potato Chip Company, Walsworth –Fulton, and Danuser Machine Company.

Education, Heritage, and Agriculture

Callaway County is home to two prestigious institutions of higher education: Westminster College and William Woods University. Westminster College

is internationally recognized as the site of Sir Winston Churchill’s historic 1946 “Iron Curtain” speech, commemorated today by America’s National Churchill Museum and the Breakthrough Berlin Wall sculpture. In 2026, Westminster College will mark the 80th anniversary of this iconic speech, with a special celebration planned for March.

William Woods University is renowned worldwide for its premier equestrian studies program. Offering Associate's through Doctoral Degree programs, WWU brings in people from all walks of life to study on its spacious campus.

Our agricultural heritage remains strong, with surrounding communities such as New Bloomfield, Auxvasse, Williamsburg, Mokane, and others supporting thriving farming operations focused on beef cattle, corn, soybeans, and wheat.

Communities Across Callaway County

Beyond Fulton, Callaway County’s communities each offer their own

unique experiences and traditions. Enjoy a spectacular fireworks display in Holts Summit, dance the night away at 54 Country or visit the Firefighters Memorial in the Village of Kingdom City, make a stop at Crane’s Country Store in Williamsburg, or explore the City of Auxvasse as it begins its exciting downtown renovation process. From small-town celebrations to local landmarks and revitalization efforts, there truly is something for everyone in Callaway County.

A Strong and Resourceful Community

Callaway County continues to grow and evolve, offering the resources, opportunities, and quality of life that make it a great place to call home. Whether you are visiting, relocating, or starting a business, you will find a community rich in history, full of charm, and driven by ambition.

ELTON HENSLEY MEMORIAL AIRPORT

Elton Hensley Memorial Airport is located west of the City of Fulton.

It started out as just one gravel runway and a single building in the 1930’s, by 1941 it expanded to 302 acres and three runways. In the mid 1960’s the City of Fulton began improvements to the airport; a parking lot, paved runway, runway lighting and a

terminal building were added.

The City of Fulton officially dedicated the airport in September 1967 and by 1983 had developed a master plan to make the airport thrive.

As of 2023, Elton Hensley Memorial Airport has 46 hangar spaces and houses over 50 aircraft; the airport now has three runways, 2 concrete and one turf,

allowing the airport to accept over 22,000 flights annually.

The community supports FPS district by approving Prop K (for Kids) in 2018 and Prop S (for School Improvement) in 2020. Proposition S featured improvements and additions to facilities throughout the district including the new competition gym located at Fulton High School, the addition of 8 classrooms at Fulton Middle School, and secure entrances throughout the district. Construction on the final project of Proposition S is wrapping up with the brand new Kindergarten Center at Fulton Early Childhood Center. NORTH CALLAWAY R-I SCHOOL DISTRICT

North Callaway R-1 School District consists of the T-Bird Learning Center, 2 elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Its mascot is the Thunderbird. Geographically, the district is just over 320 square miles. Aspects of the district that are fairly unique include operating on a 4-day week schedule, and the low cost before and after school programs. North Callaway students typically attend classes Tuesday through Friday. The North Callaway R-1 School District has been fortunate enough to receive the 21st Century Community Learning Centers’ grant. This grant allows the district to operate before and after school programs for all students grades K-12 for a very nominal cost to families.

The T-Bird Learning Center houses a state-licensed childcare facility that cares for infants through 5 years of age. T-Bird Learning Center also houses the district’s Parents as Teachers (PAT) program. PAT uses an early childhood

home visiting model to provide services to pregnant women and families with children from birth through kindergarten. Lastly, the Center offers Early Childhood Special Education services that are designed for young children (aged 3-5) with disabilities who need specially designed instruction or related services. In early 2026, the Center earned the DESE QAR "Demonstating Quality" designation making it one of only 4 schools in Missouri and the first rural school to earn this honor.

The district’s 2 elementary schools, Hatton McCredie Elementary and Williamsburg Elementary, provide learning opportunities for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. The district has around 420 elementary students.

In 2021-2022, North Callaway changed the makeup of its buildings from three K-8 schools to two K-5 buildings and the newly created North Callaway Middle School. This school is the home to approximately 238 students in grades 6-8. Uniting these young adolescents in one building has allowed additional programming and educational experiences for this grade span.

Finally, students enter North Callaway High School to complete the final 4 years of school. The high school provides many opportunities for discovery for over 360 students. Students are encouraged to extend their thinking and be a part of schoolsponsored athletics and cocurricular activities. The district’s goal is to help them obtain

the skills they will need to be successful as adults, both as leaders and contributing citizens and help students to identify their future path, be it college, career, or military. Programs unique to the high school level include Jobs for America’s Graduates, dualcredit classes in multiple subject areas, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes in agriculture and business. Students may also choose to pursue additional CTE classes at Hart Career Center.

The North Callaway R-1 School District has 3 goals to guide all of its programs: ensure academic excellence, promote a positive learning culture, and strategically use resources. It is with the support of the North Callaway R-1 School District community that these goals can be achieved.

SOUTH CALLAWAY R-II SCHOOL DISTRICT

The consolidation of 18 separate school districts in 1957 resulted in the creation of the South Callaway R-II School District. In August of 1959, students began school in a newly constructed brick and concrete building which served elementary and high school students. Over the next 20 years, additions of classrooms, offices and a gymnasium were made. Construction of a separate high school building was completed in 1982. The high school complex provided a modern cornerstone for an emerging campus which includes various athletic fields and facilities. In 1996, the district expanded even further with the addition of the Early Childhood Learning Center, which houses Pre-K through 2nd grade students. In an effort to provide a creative learning atmosphere in a student centered environment, continuous renovations and expansion efforts have taken place in all areas of the campus. The district now has a total enrollment of nearly 800 students from Pre-K through 12th grade.

South Callaway R-II boasts stateof-the-art technology providing each K-12 student with an iPad. This high-tech campus features district wide wireless internet access creating a 21st century learning environment.Athletic programs are available for middle and high school students

in updated sports facilities. Vocational programs are offered on campus (Pro-Start, agriculture, and business) as well as at Nichols Career Center in Jefferson City, Missouri. Students seeking an alternative high school experience may do so in a variety of ways including participation in dual credit, dual enrollment, online, and alternative programs.

QUALITY HIGHER EDUCATION

Quality higher education is readily available in Callaway County through both a college and a university.

WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Westminster College is a small college that makes a big impact on the lives of its students by providing them with a personalized, one-onone educational experience that leads to career fulfillment and success. The private, four-year college was recently prestigiously ranked by The Princeton Review as “One of the Best 150 Colleges in the Midwest” for a reason. Founded in 1851, Westminster is steeped in collegiate tradition while abundant in innovation

through its more than 34 majors — including a popular selfdesigned major, a 100% online degree program, and a Degree in Three option that allows students to enter the workforce or attend graduate school earlier than their peers.

Westminster is noted for its 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio and unique opportunities — graduate-level research, field studies, experiential learning, and competitive internships, to name just a few strengths. Pre-med students study in the innovative Human Cadaveric Lab and go on to excel in medical school, while pre-law students often are accepted into the top law schools in the country. These academic advantages result in the College’s graduates ranking in the top 16% nationwide for earnings. Westminster prepares their

students to be the very best.

With 17 certificate programs, a variety of specialty programs, and dual-degree programs in Athletic Training, Chiropractic Studies, Engineering, and Nursing, Westminster students receive a premiere education, all while acquiring the soft skills of public speaking, cultural sensitivity, interpersonal skills, and professional etiquette practices made possible by a small environment steeped in a wellrounded liberal arts foundation.

Outside of the classroom, Westminster students are active in more than 40 clubs and organizations, a vibrant sorority and fraternity community (one of the most active in the nation), and 19 NCAA Division III sports teams. Lifelong friends and lasting connections — including

a highly enthusiastic and involved alumni network — are part of the Westminster experience.

In 1946, President Harry Truman encouraged former Prime Minister Winston Churchill to deliver what became the world-famous “Iron Curtain” speech on the campus. Truman wrote, “This is a wonderful school in my home state. Hope you can do it. I will introduce you.” He knew what many continue to recognize today: A Westminster education leads to professional success and personal fulfillment because of, not in spite of, its small size.

The area was organized into Callaway County, named for Captain James Callaway—a grandson of Daniel Boone.

The Civil War begins. Missouri was a border state, with mixed loyalties. There was a perception that the Union militia treated our area as an entity apart from the rest of the state. That’s how it became known as “The Kingdom of Callaway.”

Winston Churchill is invited by President Harry S Truman to visit his home state, where he delivered his famous “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster College. In 1969, America’s National Churchill Museum opens in a 17th-century church relocated from London.

A statue commissioned for the Fire Fighters Memorial in Kingdom City was sitting in customs in New York City on September 11th.
