Fulton State Hospital is the oldest public mental health facility west of the Mississippi. The hospital is certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and has been accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) since 1984.
Fulton State Hospital underwent a dramatic change recently that will impact the services the hospital provides. The new $211 million state-of-the-art facility has revolutionized the services provided to the clients served.
Fulton State Hospital consists of treatment units for high security patients (300 beds), individuals with developmental disabilities (24 beds), and the Sexual Offender Rehabilitation and Treatment Services (SORTS) program (125 beds). Once the Nixon Forensic Center opened, the Biggs Forensic Center closed. Clients from the Biggs Forensic Center and Guhleman Forensic Center moved into the new facility. The hospital will continue to maintain the 22-bed minimum security Hearnes Forensic Center in a separate building on campus.
