President’s Message Fellow Members, It is an honor to serve you as President of SCLEOA. Every day, law enforcement officers across South Carolina demonstrate courage, professionalism, and compassion in the face of extraordinary challenges. Your service does not go unnoticed. Again, I want to focus on something vital to our profession — our mental health. We are trained to be strong, resilient, and steady under pressure. But real strength also means recognizing when we need help. The work we do carries weight. The stress, trauma, and responsibility do not simply disappear at the end of a shift. As an association, we remain committed to promoting resources and open conversations that remove the stigma around seeking help. Check on one another. Start the conversation. And if you need assistance, know that you are not alone. Caring for your mental health isn’t weakness — it’s readiness. It’s leadership. It’s

resilience that allows you to serve your community well and be fully present for your family. I am also grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our Executive Director, JJ Jones, and Jenny Lewis. Their professionalism and commitment to this association strengthen everything we do. SCLEOA benefits greatly from their dedication and I appreciate the support they provide to our members Chief Charles Barranco of the Aiken Department of Public Safety every day. As we look ahead to our Annual Conference, I am encouraged by the opportunity to gather as professionals and as a community. It will be a time for training, collaboration, and renewal — a chance to strengthen the bonds that make this association strong and cultivate new ones.

Stay safe. Respectfully, Charles D. Barranco President, SCLEOA

SCLEOA is more than an organization. It is a network of dedicated men and women who stand together. Thank you for your service and your commitment to each other. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Your house becomes a home by the way it presents itself, in turn making your yard a natural welcome mat. Visualize your yard as the picture frame that encompasses your home, complementing its features. It is a foregone conclusion that a stunning yard suggests the interior of your home is stunning as well. A yard beautification can be achieved with numerous elements ranging from subtle lighting, trees, plants or creativity with outdoor amenities. A proper combination of these can add luxury to your home while making a rewarding investment. Many real estate professionals estimate that an effective landscape design can increase the value of your property by a third. Our Mission: At Oasis Landscapes, we are passionate about providing extraordinary quality, first class service and a personal commitment to honoring our word. We’re professional, fair and honest and take tremendous pride in serving our clients. Ethics: Our integrity and reputation are our most valuable principle and will not be compromised. Commitment: We believe in consistently doing what we say we will do: no excuses, no exceptions. Teamwork: Collaborative group effort from every spectrum produces working relationships that last a lifetime. At the end of the day this effort produces an ideal product that maximizes the benefit of all involved. oasislandscapesnursery.com

Executive Director’s Message SCLEOA Family, It’s always a pleasure when I get the opportunity to share with my partners in lawenforcement across South Carolina what Team SCLEOA has to report. We are proud to announce that we made some positive strides in the South Carolina Legislature this year with key legislation being passed. Law enforcement representatives at the statehouse worked hard to protect our K9 and patrol horses through stiffer penalties for injuring police officers. Governor McMaster signed Fargo’s Bill strengthening protections for handlers and police animals in the line of duty. We remember Fargo, Hyco, Rico, Coba, Wick, Mikka, and Bumi for the sacrifice that they made on the streets in South Carolina. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten and now more strict penalties went into effect after May 15, 2026. We also continued to work on bringing back Retire and Return to keep more officers in our state actively working and encourage retired officers to come back and serve our police Sheriff and state lawenforcement divisions. Team SCLEOA was also active on the social front for your members throughout

South Carolina. We participated in the 2026 Sporting Clay Shoot, 2026 SCLEOA Tri-County Golf Tournament and 2026 SCLEOF Bass Tournament. All those events occurred in the Spring and we raised money to give back to officers killed in line of duty and officers who are in need of assistance. Our primary focus on fund raising is to support the Ben Willoughby program. This program allows a one time payment for SCLEOA members that are in need of financial support due to injury, illness, or accident that has negatively impacted their lives. Most importantly in this short message, I ask you to remember the family and Greenwood Police Officer DJ Keller. DJ was tragically killed in the line of duty in a vehicle accident while he was out doing what he loved to do. DJ left behind a loving wife and a young daughter. Say a prayer for his team members at the Greenwood Police Department. They lost a brother and a great cop.

Executive Director J.J. Jones

God bless each and every one of you and know that I am here willing to help in anyway that I can. JJ Jones Executive Director, SCLEOA

In closing, I would like to say “thank you” to every member that has supported our fund raising events, our training opportunities, and all who spread the word about what SCLEOA does for our members in South Carolina. SUMMER 2026 /15

In Loving Memory — Sgt. Don ‘DJ’ Keller Don William Keller, known fondly as DJ, 31,of Greenwood, husband of Alison Charles Keller, passed away Monday, May 11, 2026. His untimely death in the line of duty has left an indelible mark on the community he served unwaveringly and on all who had the honor of knowing him. DJ’s journey was shaped by dedication and service from an early age. He was a graduate of Ware Shoals High School and furthered his commitment to law enforcement by graduating from the South Carolina Police Academy in 2023. That same year, he began his career with the Greenwood City Police Department, where he quickly distinguished himself through his commitment and skill. In 2025, DJ became a K9 officer, partnering with his loyal K9 companion, Vice, a team that was both respected and admired within the department and community. DJ’s service extended beyond the badge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of E6 during his four years of active duty from 2016-2020. Continuing his dedication to the safety and pride of his state, he remained an active member of the South Carolina National Guard. His military and law enforcement careers were a testament to his unwavering dedication to protecting and serving his country and community. Outside of his professional life, DJ was an avid outdoorsman who 36/ SCLEOA • The Voice

cherished time spent hunting, fishing, and shooting. These passions reflected his deep connection with nature and a quiet strength that defined his character. DJ leaves behind a loving family who were his greatest treasures. He is survived by his devoted wife, Alison “Ali” Charles Keller, and their beloved daughter, Ella Bloom Keller. His parents, Don Anthron Keller and Jennifer Burkett; seven siblings, including those he was raised with — Emily Keller, Jessica Durant, and Deontae Durant; his Granny, June Smith; his father and mother-in-law, Chad and Sandy Charles; brothers-inlaw, Garrett Charles and Kellar

Charles; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; a special cousin, Destin Lewis, and his faithful pup, Ammo. Don William Keller’s life was one marked by courage, loyalty, and an unyielding commitment to his community, family, and country. His sacrifice while performing his duties is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers each day. As we honor DJ’s memory, we celebrate a man who lived with integrity and whose legacy will endure in the hearts of those who loved him and the community he bravely served.

Cayce Mourns Loss of Former Chief A.G. Dantzler It is with great sadness that we share that former Chief of the Cayce Public Safety Department, A.G. Dantzler, passed away on January 10, 2026. Chief Dantzler began working with the Cayce Department of Public Safety in 1959. After his retirement in 1998, he served as a Cayce volunteer fireman and as a commissioner for the Cayce

Historical Museum. Cayce’s Police and Fire buildings bare the name of A.G. Dantzler. He was inducted into SC Law Enforcement Hall of Fame in 2023. In May of 2024, the City of Cayce presented Dantzler with the Key to the City for his many years of dedication to public safety and his love for the Cayce community.

Please join our city in remembering and honoring Chief Dantzler as we also keep his wife of more than 60 years, Barbara, his family and many friends in our thoughts, prayers and hearts. Thank you, Chief Dantzler, for your years of service to our city and citizens. Rest in peace.

New Law Aims to Protect Law Enforcement Animals South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed a landmark bill known as Fargo’s, Hyco’s, Rico’s, Coba’s, Wick’s, Mikka’s, and Bumi’s Law to protect police animals. This law ensures that those who harm or kill law enforcement dogs and horses face severe felony charges, lengthy prison time, and strict restitution payments Pictured below is Rep. Neil Collins and South Carolina K9 handlers, including Sgt. Warren Cavanaugh of Richland County. Sgt. Cavanaugh lost his K9 partner in the line of duty and worked tirelessly with law enforcement representatives in the State House to get stiffer penalties for suspects injuring canines and horses.
