Dear fellow Chiefs,
President’s Message
I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our outgoing president, Chief Sonny Leeda, for his remarkable leadership and the dedication he has shown over the past several years. His guidance has left a strong foundation for us to build upon and his boots will be hard to fill, not only in our organization, but in our policing profession. As I take on the honor and responsibility of leading our association in the coming year, I am both humbled and energized by the opportunity to serve alongside each of you. Every day, in every community across South Carolina, you are the foundation of public safety and an example of our commitment to justice, service, and integrity. Our work as law enforcement leaders faces new challenges every President Dana Crowell day and now more than ever, we find everything we do matters. Every conversation we have, every decision we make. It matters. The role of a Chief is not simply to oversee operations or enforce rules. It is about leadership in its purest form. We set the tone, not just for the police force, but for how the public views law enforcement as a whole. Our actions, decisions, and words resonate throughout our departments and extends into the wider community. It’s imperative we get it right. We must put the right people on the team, provide them the resources they need, properly equip and train them, challenge them, praise them when they get it right, and hold them accountable when they get it wrong. It is equally as important that we take care of our men and women on every front physically, finically, spiritually, and emotionally. When we take care of our officers, we empower them to take care of our communities. In the upcoming year, as an association, we have several initiatives and goals to help us grow as leaders and bolster the effectiveness of our departments. We will continue to emphasize training and education, advocate for resources and policies that enhance our ability to serve and prioritize the mental health and wellness of our officers. Importantly, we will work collectively to strengthen our relationships with the communities we serve, ensuring they see us as true partners in safety. Your experience, insight, and support are invaluable to me as I work to represent our association and drive forward our mission. I encourage each of you to engage actively with the initiatives we will be introducing and to bring forward your ideas and concerns so that we can address them together. Thank you for your trust, your leadership, and the daily sacrifices you make for our Palmetto State and its citizens. I look forward to a productive and meaningful year ahead. Your President, Dana K. It is always a blessing when we get the opportunity to gather at one of our state’s most beautiful beaches. Your SCPCA team had the opportunity to join our leaders at the Marriott-Myrtle Beach Resort and Spa at Grande Dunes. We were blessed with the opportunity to fellowship with the strongest leaders in South Carolina’s law enforcement family and hear great speakers. The 2024 SCPCA Leadership Conference was well attended this year with 145 attendees. We want to thank our Diamond Sponsors: Hendrick Automotive Group and CPI Security for making this conference happen. They were joined by our Gold Sponsors: Axon, MPS, Brannen Motors, Motorola Solutions, and The Police App to make your conference a success. Their support was paramount, and they made an all-star lineup of Executive Director John E. “JJ” Jones speakers and events a reality for you. With the 2024 SCPCA Leadership Conference, we also welcomed in a new president to lead us into the 2025 legislative session. Chief Dana Crowell is already studying legislation with us and taking up where Chief Sonny Ledda left off. Their commitment to SCPCA is leading us down the path to success. Your Office Manager, Jenny Lewis, has already sent out SCPCA invoices for the year 2025 and we look forward to all our chiefs in South Carolina returning as members. We also encourage you to add your assistant chiefs or second in command to keep your departments “in the know’ in the Palmetto State. This year was a tremendous success, but we look to eclipse and surpass on our charge into 2025. With your help at the legislature, we anticipate an even stronger foothold on legislation as it is discussed and voted. Please remember to share legislation concerns with me and know that our team is always ready to hear about legislation that we should push for success or change for the better of law enforcement. We are already planning training dates for 2025 and have the first Bi-Monthly Chiefs Trainer set for Goose Creek Police Department on January 16, 2025. We hope to see you there. The 2025 SCPCA Leadership Conference is in the works, and we look forward to selling our Axon Exhibit Hall out in 2025! 2024 SCPCA President’s Reception Chief Sonny Ledda welcomed chiefs to the Myrtle Beach Train Depot for an evening of Low Country Boil, fellowship, and we were even visited by the Tiger and Cocky! Chief Sonny Ledda took this dinner as an opportunity to give back to the Grand Strand area with a food drive. This food drive boasted 110 pounds of food donated to the Low Country Food Bank in Myrtle Beach. 2024 Bi-Monthly Trainer Chiefs of Police from across SC converged on the Sawmill Shooting Facility in Laurens, S.C., for a morning of in-service training, shooting, and networking. Our sponsor, GVL Limo Service, in Greenville, SC, provided a fabulous BBQ lunch and door prizes. Special Agent Jackie Hamelryck of the FBI Columbia Field Office shared a presentation on child abductions, case studies, and response opportunities. Our partners at GVL brought their line of firearms to T & E. Our chiefs had a blast!
