Past President Gary Clark
Does God Know You? During a recent trip to the Caribbean I was sailing alone on a cruise ship and it came to me what I needed to write in this article. I have written about firefighting techniques, leadership and membership. The thing that should be most important in people's lives we forget about the most. If I never write another article in this magazine this one should have been where I started and ended. For GOD said He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega. First of all, I am a Christian and proud to proclaim it. In the Bible it proclaims in Ecclesiastes 3(1-8) “(1) To everything there is a season, and a time to every
purpose under the heavens. (2) A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;(3) A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to breakdown, and a time to build up;(4) A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance;(5) A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;(6) A time to seek, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to cast away;(7) A time to rend, and a time to sew; (8) A time to keep silent, and a time to speak;(8) A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of
peace.” If you haven't been asked, today you will be. The question is not do you know God, but does God know you? I also want to share a letter from Karen A. Edwards: I asked God to take my habits away God said “No” It's not for me to take away, but for you to give it up. I asked God to grant me patience. God said “No” Patience is a byproduct of tribulations it isn't granted it is earned. I asked God to give me happiness. God said “No” I give you blessings happiness

Does God Know You? (continued) is up to you. I asked God to spare me pain. God said “No” Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me. I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said “No”. You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful. I asked God for all things that I might enjoy in life. God said “No” I give you life so that you may enjoy all things. Then I ask God to help me love others as much as he loves me.
God said, "Finally, you get the idea." Even in the BIBLE, it teaches us to put others first. I love you all, and pray that you seek him first and He said all things will be added unto you. Past President Gary J. Clark

What Does the Red Coat Mean Anyway? Most sources indicate that the Georgia State Firefighters Association was established in 1952. However, the history of the Georgia Firefighters Pension Fund reveals that a group of fire chiefs approached the Georgia Fireman’s Association during their annual convention in the 1930s to propose the creation of a pension fund for firefighters in Georgia (Georgia Firefighter Pension Fund, n.d.). This raises the question: when did the Association officially commence its activities? Additionally, what is the origin and history of the red coat worn by the board members? The red coats worn by the Georgia State Firefighters Association's board members symbolize their leadership and commitment to the fire service community. Consequently, the red coat has become associated with authority and responsibility, reflecting the crucial role that board members play in directing the Association's initiatives and supporting fire-
fighters throughout Georgia. The red coat is worn today by the Association’s executive board, which comprises the Immediate Past President, President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Treasurer, and Member at Large. There are non-voting members of the board who also wear red coats, which are the Parliamentarian and Chaplin. So, does the red coat signify that these are board members of Georgia's oldest and largest Firefighter Association? The Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs (GAFC) typically wears its home department's Class A uniforms for ceremonial events. So, why does the Firefighters Association wear a red coat without department or rank? The firefighter’s Association comprises volunteer firefighters, career firefighters, company officers, and chief officers. The Georgia State Firefighters Association board is a group that has committed to lead the Association on behalf of all firefighters in Georgia, regard-
less of rank. The red coat signifies that they are all firefighters, irrespective of their rank in their home department. They are firefighters who have accepted the responsibility of managing the Association and making efforts to improve the State of Georgia Fire Service. So again, what does the red coat stand for? The red coat symbolizes leadership with no regard to rank. It signifies that leadership can come from any place on an organizational chart or within a station; it is a commitment to making a difference. Many Georgia Fire Service legends have worn the red coat as board members. They all had one thing in common: a love of the fire service and a commitment to lead and make a difference. They have accomplished great things like lobbying for the creation of the Pension Fund, the creation of the Georgia Fire Academy, the Cancer Bill, and recently, the PTSD SPRING/SUMMER 2025 • 13

Red Coat (continued) bill. It was instrumental in creating OCGA 1-4-12 in 1972, establishing the first Tuesday in February as Firefighter Appreciation Day in Georgia. This was accomplished by a group of firefighters who sought legislation to acknowledge the tireless efforts all Georgia Firefighters do daily to serve their fellow citizens. The two previous presidents were not chief officers of their departments. They did not have to take home cars or purchase cards from their agencies. These two individuals spent their money on fuel, hotels, meals, and many other costs while traveling the state for the Association. They spent many hours off duty and using swap time to be at the Capital fighting for legislation to help the fire service. Their actions served as a reminder of their commitment. It demonstrates how wearing
the red coat demands being a steward of the Georgia Fire Service, committed to improving it. The next time you see the red coat, think about its history and the work done by the past board members. They were dedicated to making a difference and improving things for the firefighters who follow them. The coat represents leadership in the purest form. It is not about power, rank, or money. It is about positively influencing and leaving the fire service in a better place. These individuals take on the responsibility of fighting for the fire service, which is upon their shoulders with honor and pride. These individuals do not ask for compensation for the work it takes while serving on board. Wearing the red coat demonstrates devotion and love for the Georgia Fire Service.

Where Do We Go Next and How Do We Get There?
Director at Large Calvin Hitchcock
Over my 26 years in the fire service, I’ve had the privilege of being involved in tasks that most others never get the chance to experience. Years ago, I was pushed — almost as if by fate — toward emergency management, a field that would come to shape the path I would follow in the fire service. I often questioned why I was given opportunities to take part in projects typically reserved for upper management, especially when I was still considered "low man on the totem pole." Little did I know, these opportunities were setting me up for something bigger down the road. In January 2022, I started the year as I always did, planning my training schedule
in alignment with what the department had to offer. I’ve always wanted to do more than just the basics. But my body had other plans. I went for a routine health check, thinking it was just an insurance formality. What I didn’t expect was a cancer diagnosis. The next few weeks felt like an eternity. We began treatment, but after two rounds, it became clear that the wrong cancer was being treated. We switched my case to another team, and during this time, I had to step back from work. The side effects were too much to continue working. When I finally got the green light to return, I was eager to be back on the truck, helping people, and reuniting with my
firehouse family. Fast forward to 2023 — things seemed to be going well, but I had a lingering sense that something wasn’t quite right. A return to my team confirmed my fears: The cancer had come back. It wasn’t as bad as before, but we had to treat it again. So, 2024 began with more treatments and a return to uncertainty. As 2024 drew to a close, I faced new questions: Had cancer truly gone away? Would it return? Why was it taking so long to get back to my passion — being at the station and helping my crew and the people who needed us? I felt stuck, with every step forward seeming to push me back two steps. I was left wondering where to go next.

Where Do We Go Next? (continued) What if I couldn’t return to the station? What if I lost my job? What would happen to my family? The questions piled up. But then, 2024 brought unexpected clarity. Georgia faced some of the worst storms in years. I was tasked with working alongside the state’s emergency Incident Management Team (IMT), helping local emergency managers respond to the needs of their areas. It was in the midst of these storms that I rediscovered my love for emergency management. I found myself asking: Could this be my next move? Could I leave full-time fire service and transition into a role in emergency management? Around 15 years ago, I set a personal goal: When I was ready to move on from the fire service, I wanted to be trained to a level where I could easily transition into emergency management. It seems like God had other plans for me — maybe pushing me toward this next chapter sooner than I had anticipated.
How Do We Get There? Throughout my career, I’ve worked hard to be the person others can count on. If you needed me, I was there. My involvement in large-scale wildfires, missing persons cases, commercial fires, plant drills, and state-level training events has given me experiences that most firefighters never have. Though these responsibilities were usually reserved for officers, I was often called upon to serve alongside them, earning the trust of my state and federal partners. These experiences allowed me to quickly amass the skills needed for this new chapter. If you’re in emergency services — fire, EMS, law enforcement — always have a backup plan. I didn’t sit on my hands over the years, sticking to basic training. I pushed myself to go beyond. If I had only stuck to the basics, I wouldn't be in the position I am today, with the opportunity to move into something new. As I close out 2024 and look to the future, I’m taking the leap. In 2025, I will leave fulltime fire service to become a
statewide training coordinator in emergency management. It’s a difficult decision. I’ll miss the camaraderie, the laughter, and even the tough times. But I know this is the right move for me. In this new role, I’ll have the opportunity to serve across the state, guiding others and helping them grow in the field. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to keep pushing forward. Don’t be afraid to take risks or step outside your comfort zone. You never know where it might lead. The next person working alongside these teams could be you. Customer Service Treasurer Bruce King
Have you ever thought about exactly what your job entails? There are two underlying factors that a lot of firefighters don’t think about. Sure, there are the three priorities that we are trained to know, Life Safety, Incident Stabilization, and Property Conservation. However, on a more “molecular” level we are providers of customer service (internal and external) and problem solvers. If you have never read (or haven’t read it recently) Chief Alan Brunacini’s book called “Essentials of Fire Department Customer Service,” I highly recommend it! It is an easy read, and it offers simple concepts on ways for public safety personnel, of all ranks, to have a tremendous impact on those we come in contact with. To simply open a door for someone can sometimes “make his or her day,” and often when it is performed by someone in uniform, it can greatly enhance the effect. We want citizens and public officials to see us in a good light and often it starts with a good
attitude and being kind to them and each other. Training is so important in public safety but there is no way to train for every single scenario. Some training is very specific, however, overall, we train to give us “tools” to adapt generalized concepts to meet specific situations. Along with company training and other training opportunities, look for opportunities to practice your problem-solving skills. Sometimes the ability to mitigate an issue efficiently stems from the confidence that you achieve from other experiences that you have encountered. There are some incidents that do require the specific step by step actions to mitigate, however so many situations necessitate us to re-evaluate our thought processes. Unless your agency requires you to handle given situations in a verbatim manner, look for outside of the box mitigation methods (as long as they can be done safely). You should not go outside of your agencies policies
and SOPs/SOGs unless your agency gives you guidelines as to where it is allowed. When it is allowed, look for multiple ways to handle a given situation, just in case the first thing that you try doesn’t work. It’s always a good idea to have a “Plan B.” With Sincerity and Respect, Bruce King GSFA Treasurer

Your Last Pre Plan by Jeff Sanders In the brotherhood of the fire service we have an obligation to protect our brothers/sisters, give healthy advice and guide them throughout their life. None of us like to think about the end. The end of our firefighting career or the end of our life on earth. Though we all look forward to retiring there are many uncertainties and questions that cross our minds. What will retirement be like? What will I do? What kind of health will I have? And many more questions will likely arise the closer you get. But what about “the final end?” What will your end be like?! Beside the mourning and broken hearts of your passing, will there be opportunities for fussing and arguments about your funeral arrangements? After you are laid to rest will the same opportunities arise what to do with your treasures, who gets what! But what happens if I don’t make it to retirement? No one is promised tomorrow. Our days are numbered the moment we are born. In fact when you get my age, we start counting down. The most important question is where will I spend eternity! Hopefully that answer gives you peace of mind. But what about before the end comes or when it does. We spend many hours in the
fire service pre planning but for most of us we avoid the pre planning process about our “end oend time!" As leaders in the fire service we are to guide our fellow brothers and sisters, preparing them for obstacles they may face throughout their life. Ponder these questions: Do I have enough life insurance to pay for my funeral with enough left over to help my family survive or will they have to borrow the money to bury me! What kind of service do I want? Do I wish to be cremated, have a traditional service or a memorial service? What funeral home will be used? Do I want fire department involvement ? What happens to my stuff? Who gets what? Who will preach my funeral? Do I want it at my Church or the chapel of the funeral home or just a graveside? Who do I want to carry me to
the grave? These are just a few questions we should all be thinking about regardless of our age. Get your family together. Seek their input then share your desires with them. Chose your funeral home, then drop by and visit them. Most funeral homes can help you through the process of pre planning and even make you a folder with all your wishes. Or visit them on line. Many of the forms are available on funeral home websites. As I write this article I have completed my pre planning process. My family and I have peace of mind. Today isn’t too late to start your end time pre planning process that will give you and your family peace of mind. Take care and hope to see you on the other side of the rainbow!
