For many fire departments the ability to gather analytical data about their calls, response times, and other metrics has been limited.
Several years ago, the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office purchased a license for a reporting software, that departments could us for free, in order to meet the compliance requirement of completing Na -

The Important Switch to the NERIS System Past President David Bullard
tional Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) reports. This allowed a better overall picture of data fields that are submitted via NFIRS.
NFRIS was originally developed as part of the Federal Fire Control and Prevention Act of 1974, after the publication of “America’s Burning.”
Through the 1970s, 80s and 90s coding for data fields was
updates to include fire service and civilian casualties, as well and hazardous materials incidents. However, the last update occurred in 1999.
In 2022, the United States Fire Administration (USFA) proposed updating NFRIS with the National Emergency Reporting Information System (NERIS).
USFA has contracted with

Underwriter's Labrotories Fire Safety Research Institute to develop the system. The goal is to provide a mobile device friendly reporting platform, near real time analytical data availability, and for departments who need it, a free reporting software.
The number of incident types has been reduced by 39 percent from NFIRS. It was found that with NFIRS, only 15 or so incident type codes were regularly used.
NERIS will have provisions for adding or removing data fields as needed, throughout the system. Unlike NFIRS that only allowed one incident type code, NERIS will allow multiple selections for all incident types and actions taken on a particular incident.
Today, with NFIRS, if you responded to a motor vehicle
NERIS System (continued)
collision with injuries and the vehicle was on fire, you would have to choose between “vehicle accident with injuries” or “vehicle fire.” NERIS would allow both choices, if there was a fuel spill, NERIS would allow that too.
The goal is also to make the report completion process faster and simpler. The ability to record civilian rescues from fires, MAYDAY statistics, and enhanced features to determine dollar loss, will all provide better information when developing standards and training.
NERIS will be the leading resource for comprehensive information and advanced analysis on fire-related issues in the United States. It will support state, local, territorial, and tribal fire services by offering information that helps them effectively, efficiently, and safely
address fire problems. By collecting, combining, and analyzing data, the NERIS platform will offer up-to-date information on fire and emergency situations across the U.S. It will also provide timely insights into significant or noteworthy events related to fires, hostile actions, or disasters. NERIS is Enabling Effective Emergency Response.
All Fire departments are encouraged to work with any third-party vendors that they are using for incident reporting currently, for updates and scheduling for switching to NERIS as well as the CAD vendor that their 911/dispatch center uses.
In addition, watch the NERIS website for updates and webinars. www.usfa.gov/ nfirs/neris

To the membership of Georgia State firefighters Association:
My two years as your current president will soon be past. While serving in any elected board position, it is always healthy to have change to bring new ideas and methods of improvement to an organization.
Our annual conference is quickly approaching it will soon be time for members in our association to step up into leadership positions.
As we approach the time to announce your intent to run for office, I want to encourage each of you to prepare yourself to bring your best to this organization. The door is wide open and receptive to all kinds of new ideas. The potential to grow this association is tremendous.
Saying that, I do want to

Be Prepared to Bring Your Best to the GSFA President Gary Clark
strongly discourage any GSFA member who has plans of running for a board seat only to elevate their stature not run for officer on this board.
GSFA is seeking movers and shakers to implement new ideas, to improve on the 72 years of traditions of the Georgia State Firefighters Association. It is time to remold this association and move into the next generation of Georgia firefighters.
As we get closer to the November dates of conference, you will see further instructions on how to apply and run for office on the Georgia State Firefighters Association. The procedures have changed since the last election, so pay close attention to the new instructions.
I want to remind anyone running for office this position will require some work. It will require
the support of your employer. I strongly recommend starting a new board position at the Director at Large position unless there are more than one vacant seat.
I personally want to say Thank You for your dedication in helping advance the Fire Service in Georgia with your commitment and willingness to serve as a GSFA board member.
Good Luck on your run! We will see you in Augusta.
Have a Blessed Day!!
Gary J. Clark President Georgia State Firefighters Association

As you read this article, many of you may ask yourself, who is Dave Gray? Some of you may be fortunate enough to know this person.
Dave Gray is a firefighter who, two years ago, was given the news that he has a very aggressive form of cancer. He has fought every day and endured to battle this horrible disease and has been an inspiration for many people around him.
However, this article is not about firefighter cancer but about being a passionate, caring, fullof-life spirit, even when your body is letting you down. It is even more important to remind us how great it is to be a firefighter and never take it for granted.
Dave posted a picture on Facebook this week of him doing mutual aid training with his local department just over six years ago, commenting, “What I wouldn’t give to wheel ole T-14 one more time.”
How many of you have complained about having to go out and do training, public fire safety education, hydrant maintenance, or even having a toothache call at two in the morning?
1st Vice President Mike Byrd Are You a Dave Gray?

Yet, some firefighters like Dave would gladly go back and get up to do any of those functions just once more.
A valuable lesson can be learned from Dave and his Facebook post: don’t miss a single day of appreciating what being a firefighter does for you. It is a gift that can be taken from us at any moment.
Why waste a single day being frustrated with something that, in the long run, probably will not matter one day?
Dave’s motto in recruit school was, “All go, no quit.” He has had that philosophy throughout his career and put 100 percent into every aspect of his job. Dave embraced that he was happy being a career firefighter and did not need to be promoted to be satisfied. It was an honor to be a firefighter, yet he never realized how prominent a leader he was in that position. He is led by compassion and love every day to the point it elevates those around him
to want to be like him.
FDNY Chief Edward Croker once said in a speech, “When a person becomes a firefighter, their greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What they do after is all in the line of work” (Croker, n.d.).
Since leaving the fire service, Dave Gray has become an even bigger hero. His courage has inspired those who know him or have heard about his story.
The fire service has many traditions. Unfortunately, negativity is one of them. Those who have served in any capacity have been negative, even if for a short moment. Sadly, negativity is a

contagious virus that can infect the entire department.
There are new hires being fed many different reasons to be negative by people who never experienced the very thing being complained about. Dave’s daily mission was to make someone smile and have a better day. He constantly sought ways to make people happy, whether it was co-workers, citizens, or anyone he encountered. If the entire fire service came to the station or to work with the attitude of appreciating the gift of being a firefighter and being positive, that is contagious as well.
Jimmy Valvano was a college basketball coach who died of cancer. He was also awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award just before his death.
If you have taken Axioms of Leadership or many other leadership classes in Georgia, you have seen parts or possibly his entire speech.
In this speech, Coach Valvano stated, “There are three things we
Are You a Dave Gray? (continued)
should do every day of our lives: One is to laugh, two is think, and three is to have your emotions moved to tears “ (Melfi, n.d., para. 4).
Dave has lived his career within the fire service with that logic. He also sought ways to make other people experience the same reasoning.
Tragically, Jimmy V died 38 days after this speech. During this speech, he was so weak that he could barely climb the steps to accept the award, yet he was still passionate and full of life. One of the last things he said in his speech was, “Cancer can take my physical abilities. It cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul (Melfi, n.d., para. 17).
Negativity does have the ability to take your heart and soul. It also has the ability to take your mind.
This article is meant to provoke thought and hope that each reader will step back and think about the days they were negative. The hope is that the readers will not lose another precious day
in the fire service over an issue that will not matter in the end. Be a Dave Gray, who, even in his battle for life, seeks to make everyone around him feel loved and have a better day. This article is dedicated to a true hero and a person we all should strive to be more like Firefighter David Gray, retired Woodstock Fire Department.

Have you ever had the thought that, “I think I will take it easy on taking classes for a while,” and then after a few months, an unexpected opportunity for promotion comes along?
You feel that you are qualified for the position, and you know that the “really smart guy” in your agency is not planning on testing for the promotion.
However, someone else gets it, because you are missing a class (that you were planning on taking next year) that four months ago, the powers that be had added to the promotional requirements.
So, after getting over the disappointment of not getting the promotion, you decide to “get after” as much available training as possible. You no-

tice that others in your agency are also taking more classes.

After a couple of years go by, another opportunity for promotion presents itself. You are feeling really good about your chances this time until you get to the testing center and realize that the “really smart guy” has decided to test for promotion this time. So, guess who gets this one.
The point is, that if you are proactive, you have a much better chance of being able to take advantage of unexpected opportunities. Timing plays such a huge role in our lives.
The Bible mentions that “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven:” – Ecclesiastes 3:1.
Like it or not, quite often, timing of events does not coincide with what is convenient for us, and there are also many factors beyond our control. So, we can prepare as much as possible to increase our chanc-
es of taking advantage of opportunities, or we can do just enough to get by and watch the opportunities pass us by.
Which do you choose?
With
Sincerity and Respect,
Bruce King GSFA Treasurer

Fire Service Career Goals: What Seat Are You In?
submitted by Jeff Sanders
In life we have opportunities to sit in different seats as we grow into adulthood. As a student we may have sat according to alphabetical order; or had a choice. Those choices may have been on the front row, the back row or somewhere in between.
As firefighters we have many choices as to where we sit throughout our career. For some sitting in the backseat being the nozzleman is all they want to be. These are usually the ones that need the most leadership or coaching just to maintain their required annual training.
They are content right where they are. But that in itself is not a bad thing. After all, we all must have a nozzleman that puts his/ her all into that position.
For others sitting in the backseat, their desire is the hard work, studying, training and leadership classes to one day riding “seat”, up front, leading the way.
Sitting in the officer’s seat of a responding apparatus takes courage, training and team building. Many hours of training, completing tasks books, fireground operations and management courses all rolled into one qualification.
Usually these are the employees who have higher sights in their career paths.
Unfortunately some not so well trained firefighters ride “seat” only because they aren’t certified to drive. This is typical in smaller departments where adequate and advanced training is not a priority. Too often this firefighter doesn’t know the limitations of the apparatus, how to determine
the speed of approaching traffic, or worse, anything about being in command of a one piece , apparatus response or first in of a working incident. What a liability!
Then there’s the driver — the fire apparatus operator. He or she must know the apparatus from every angle, its limitations on the road, and its pumping operations.
Many hours of training/certications should be completed before a firefighter is allowed to drive such an expensive piece of equipment. Usually this is a stepping stone to riding “the seat”.
Further up the ladder we find the shift officer. Regardless of his/her title they are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the fire suppression crew and their equipment.
Their priority should be to lead, train and guide their crew to

reaching their potential training goals.
Higher up the ladder we find those who have trained to be fire inspectors and fire marshals. Ususally they are happy and content in their jobs and making a positive difference in public safety.
Additionally there are those with the desire to train others so firefighters are well trained not only in the basics, but in advance special skills and certifications.
Then there’s the back seat training officer who spends more time developing outlines than teaching hands on.
At the top seat we find the division, deputy and the chief. For many, these individuals have earned degrees, special skill certifications and have amazing leadership skills.
Right up to their retirement
Career Goals (continued)
these individuals are productive in moving their department forward as they fill the seat at the top of the ladder. These chiefs leave the department in better shape moving in a progressive matter.
Then there’s those chief officers who got the position because of seniority or because they were a “ good fit.” Ususally these chiefs will only provide normal day-to-day functions. They are reactive instead of proactive. These departments become stale and stagnant as this style of leadership filters down through the ranks.
These so called leaders fill the very last seat on the bus. Instead of being progressive and proactive they usually put everything off to whoever, when they retire. You hear them frequently say they are just riding the bus wait-
ing on their retirement date. Or say they are just there because they can’t afford the insurance if they leave now.
How much damage is being done by sitting in the back seat during those three, six, twelve months or longer? What happens to the morale of those filling other seats? All of a sudden the brakes have been applied to moving forward, being progressive and leading the way!
Everyone in the fire service has a seat to fill. Regardless of where we are on the ladder to our career path we may need to take a hard look at our seat and determine if we (I) am living up to those standards. Am I moving our department forward or in reverse?
Only you can determine how you fill the seat you have chosen to fill!

Share the Load: Resources Available to Support Mental Wellbeing
Being a volunteer firefighter or EMS provider is tough. Responders are routinely exposed to traumatic incidents and difficult calls, deal with the stress of juggling work-life-volunteer responsibilities, have interrupted sleep, and other factors that can impact mental wellbeing. It is important for individuals and departments to focus on supporting mental wellbeing, building resilience, and learning what resources are available for those who need help.
The National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) Share the Load Program provides tools and resources to help first responders and their families manage and overcome personal and work-related problems as well as assist department leaders in best supporting their membership. These include the following:
• The NVFC First Responder Helpline, offered through Provident, provides assistance to NVFC members and their families for a variety of behavioral health issues and work-life stresses. This includes immediate assistance in a crisis moment as well as confidential counseling, resources, and referrals to assistance for a range of issues including stress, depression, family conflict, substance misuse, child or elder care, financial or legal concerns, and more.
• The Directory of Behavioral Health Professionals is an online, searchable database of local behavioral health providers who are equipped and ready to help firefighters, EMS providers, rescue workers, dispatchers, and their families.
• The Psychologically Healthy Fire Departments toolkit and training helps fire department leaders promote and foster well-being among their members and create successful, high-performing departments. Departments can also make the commitment to maintain a psychologically healthy fire department to be featured on a special landing page
• Courses in the NVFC Virtual Classroom train members of the emergency services and their families on important topics such as signs to watch for, resilience, stress management, and much more.
Find all of these resources and more at www.nvfc.org/help
