Hello readers! In the 27th of March 2022 edition, our weekly monitor reached 361 new calls recently opened by European Institutions and Agencies. This week the big call for projects under INTERREG Programme was published! 130M EUR are made available for cooperation projects across Europe. Projects will be funded through the European Regional 23 calls open on Energy, Development Fund (ERDF). Environment and Climate Main objective is to sustain for Change. a long duration of 4 years, initiatives that involve public and private entities in Europe sharing best practices on the main priorities of the ERDF in the European Union. Other 3 funding calls were issued by the European Commission supporting innovation in procurement procedures by institutions across Europe.

Objective

Advancing Lighthouse Exascale Applications, at the frontier of technology and relevant for the communities of HPC users, that enable and promote the use of upcoming exascale and post exascale computing capabilities in collaboration with other High Performance Computer (HPC) stakeholders. The goal is to develop or scale up existing parallel codes towards exascale performance, resulting into tangible benefits mainly for scientific challenges. Proposals for Exascale Lighthouse applications will exploit existing federated resources around Europe, developing available competences, and ensuring multidisciplinary (combining application domain and HPC system, software and algorithm expertise). Examples of Exascale Lighthouse applications include weather forecast and climate change, material science, natural hazards, digital twin of the human body.

Eligible Activities

Proposals for Centres of Excellence in Topic HORIZON-JTI-EuroHPC-2021-COE-01-01 must clearly identify the Exascale Lighthouse applications addressed, and must convincingly demonstrate their exascale capabilities and needs. Proposals should also be able to articulate clearly the scientific grand challenge(s) which will be addressed by the applications and why the exascale performance is needed. Targeted applications should be relevant for communities of HPC users as well as for future EuroHPC JU systems to be acquired. Proposals should be inherently committed to co-design activities to ensure that future HPC architectures are well suited for the applications and their users.

Advancing the transition towards exascale capabilities by developing or scaling up existing parallel codes, resulting into effective applications to solve scientific, industrial or societal challenges and addressing the needs of the user communities.

Eligible Activities

The Centres of Excellence (CoE) address scientific and industrial applications and user communities that run world leading codes or ensembles that aggregate to pre-exascale workloads, and may require exascale resources in specific cases. All CoEs should be user-driven and inherently committed to co-design activities to ensure that future HPC architectures are well suited for the applications and their users (both from academia and industry), providing a high performance and scalable application base. CoEs should federate existing resources around Europe, exploiting available competences, and ensuring multidisciplinary (combining application domain and HPC system, software and algorithm expertise) and synergies with national/regional programmes. CoEs should further enlarge and expand these capabilities all over Europe, in particular by including users communities from EU countries currently developing and advancing their HPC infrastructure and ecosystem (e.g. countries not currently hosting Tier 0 and/or Tier 1 supercomputing facilities).

New knowledge on the needs and developments of the European filmmaking industry, including its various sub-sectors of pre-production, production, post-production and distribution. Provide innovative policy scenarios and tools, including digital ones, for the economic recovery of the sub-sectors affected by the economic recession and the COVID-19 crisis, as well as ways to prevent unemployment in the sector. Increase further the competitiveness of the European filmmaking industry in the international arena. Provide evidence of the users/viewers preferences on filmmaking, as well as limitations to identifying their preferences, in order to widen and diversify audiences. Identify a methodology to better understand the users/viewers preferences on filmmaking. Promote European cultural activity and cultural diversity.

Eligible Activities

Proposals should identify and pilot innovative, scalable and sustainable business models, which will enable the creators to make better use of digital and other technologies and further widen their audience. In addition, they should ensure fair competitiveness and distinctness within the European film environment. Research should also identify how the COVID-19 pandemic, the counter measures and the economic recession have affected those sub-sectors and their workforce, including creators and artists, and provide policy scenarios on how the filmmaking sector could face the impacts of an economic recession/ crisis, in a cost efficient and effective manner, and by providing fair and sustainable working conditions. Proposals should also investigate the way in which the filmmaking sector can be organised to afford efficiently future economic recession/crisis and unemployment. This might include the identification of technologies that use data lakes, AI, block-chain and other technologies to build new, user-friendly and efficient revenue models around advertising, subscriptions and IPR protection.

Create innovative architectural and design solutions that emphasise the use of new forms and materials in line with the European Green Deal objectives.[1] Leverage the social function of architecture, arts and design, combining functionality and sustainability with aesthetics, arts and culture, with the aim of driving social inclusion and accessibility, as well as strengthening the contribution of culture to sustainability. Examine cultural transformations driving sustainability and explore new cooperation paths among relevant stakeholders, including cultural and creative industries[2], interested in designing a new European way of life in line with the New European Bauhaus

Eligible Activities

Proposals should show how they will contribute to developing new applications and new knowledge about the design of a public and private sustainable, inclusive, functional, accessible, aesthetically attractive and resilient built environment. The interconnection between virtual and physical spaces should be taken into consideration, including with a view to the emerging concept of “hybrid environment”. Research could for example deal with heritage sites and cultural landscapes, aiming to protect and enhance their values in order to improve the well-being and sense of belonging of users/residents, the accessibility for persons with specific fragilities as well as experimenting CCIsdriven innovation in living spaces. The proposed solutions should be socially, culturally, economically and politically feasible across Europe. Their feasibility should be verified in these terms in at least three different settings and in at least three different Member States/Associated Countries. Practical policy recommendations and guidance based on the findings should be produced for European, national, regional and local authorities.

The aim of this action is to provide Member States with evidence-based knowledge to be transferred to further design, plan, and implement prostate, lung, and gastric cancer screenings. Methodological approaches will be aligned and coordinated with the European Guidelines and Quality Assurance Schemes for breast cancers.

Eligible Activities

This action will support the optimisation of knowledge transfer, a better understanding of the needs, and the design, planning and development of possible options for future implementation of targeted screening on prostate, lung, and gastric cancers. In addition, the action will support initiatives to fill the existing gaps in knowledge and to fine-tune and improve the Member States’ approaches to the early detection of prostate, lung, and gastric cancer. It will help to align and ensure consistency in addressing a set of basic requirements that are currently being dealt with in a piece-meal manner in Member States.

The aim of the action is to reduce the burden of NCDs targeting NCDs other than those in the five action strands of the ‘Healthier Together – EU NCD Initiative’ and cancer; for example, kidney diseases and liver diseases, auto-immune diseases, musculo-skeletal conditions etc., by increasing awareness, sharing knowledge and building capacity to improve public health, especially at local level

Eligible Activities

Activities to be funded will include the transfer of promising practices and approaches, which contribute to tackling the burden of NCDs other than cancer and those in the five action strands of the ‘Healthier Together’ initiative. The civil society organisations (NGOs, professional and patient groups) will implement targeted projects and activities, complementing the Member States’ efforts in the design, planning and implementation of best practices, including support to the definition of public health guidelines and healthcare guidelines, to the preparation and roll out of new policy approaches, to the pilot testing of innovative practices, and support actions such as training and twinning, health communication or health literacy. Activities should also include an equity dimension and aim at reducing health inequalities.

Proposals should set up innovative urban planning and design practices that result in flexile building/design regulations and instruments, that harmonize high quality place making, mix-land use, compact urban fabrics and well-balanced densities with equitable access to amenities. The new urban planning and design practices and tools should aim at climate neutrality and a significant reduction in emissions by 2030. They should also aim to respect the urban form and typology, its aesthetics, character and identity while facilitating circularity and the use of innovative and clean building technologies, materials and construction techniques, in line with the guiding principles of the European Green Deal and the New European Bauhaus initiative. Objective

High Value Datasets held by the public sector will be available via APIs in a machinereadable format for the creation of data products and services and for their use by the participants in the common European data spaces. This will help more companies, in particular SMEs, start-ups, as well as public organisations to use cross-EU data to scale up and offer EU-wide services, benefiting from the size of the EU’s digital market. The easy availability of machine-readable data in bulk or via APIs will also greatly facilitate machine learning based on public data, especially in the data-demanding areas such as climate change, pollution or weather predictions.The Open Data infrastructure will continue to facilitate and improve access and re-use by the private and public sectors of the datasets generated by European public administrations. Objective: The objective is to increase the easy availability, quality and usability of public sector information in compliance with the requirement of the Open Data Directive[1], in order to boost the re-use and combination of open public data across the EU for the development of information products and services, including AI applications.

Eligible Activities

Grants will support public administrations at local, regional and national level in increasing semantic, technical and legal interoperability and data portability of the High Value Datasets (HVDs) identified by the forthcoming corresponding implementing act and selected in specific categories indicated in Annex 1 to the Open Data Directive namely: Geospatial, Earth observation and environment, Meteorological, Statistics, Companies and company ownership, Mobility. The objective of the European slate development support is to foster the competitiveness of European independent production companies and to increase their economic weight on the market. Eligible Activities

Support will be given to independent European production companies able to develop a slate of 3 to 5 audiovisual works (fiction, animation, creative documentary). This should allow production companies to reduce risks and increase their capacity to attract and retain talents. The European slate development shall provide support to the development of minimum 3 and maximum 5 works for commercial exploitation intended for cinema release, television broadcasting or commercial exploitation on digital platforms or a multi-platform environment in the following categories: animation, creative documentary or fiction. Applicants may add a short film by emerging talent to their slate (optional). The aim is to provide funds to audiovisual production companies to develop work with high creative value and cultural diversity and wide cross-border exploitation potential. Companies are encouraged to develop strategies for marketing and distribution from the outset of the development phase thus improving the potential to reach audiences at a European and international level.
