The smart tool for EU proposal drafters and grant writers CallforEurope is a consultancy that provides for professional information and assistance on European Policies, Programmes and Public Calls. Hello readers! In the 23rd of January 2022 edition, our weekly monitor reached 425 new calls recently opened by European Institutions and Agencies. During the last week we reviewed six Horizon Europe new calls funding actions under the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission. The actions are expected to provide a strong and direct support to cities all over Europe that will commit to climate neutrality and implement their climate action plans. The objective is to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, in synergy with significant progress towards zero pollution. Cities taking part to the initiatives will act as experimentation and innovation hubs for other cities to become climate-neutral by 2050.

The Public Engagement with Research Award is established to recognise those who successfully engage audiences outside their domain with ERC-funded research. Public engagement is defined for the purposes of this prize as the involvement of the public in the design, conduct or dissemination of activities funded by the ERC. Engagement is a two-way process, involving interaction and mutual understanding for mutual benefit.
Eligible Activities
All applications must refer to public engagement activities for an ERC-funded project, regardless of the sources of funding for the public engagement activities themselves.

All Principal Investigators in an ERC frontier research project, that is either ongoing or has ended on or after 31/12/2019, are eligible to apply. In case of ongoing ERC frontier research projects, only activities completed by the submission deadline can be included in the application. Objective
Enhancing the ability to ascertain whether and to what extent emission reduction efforts are producing the desired atmospheric signals for key greenhouse gases on relevant spatial and temporal scales. Better understanding of apparent discrepancies between reported greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals (in national inventories and other schemes), measured atmospheric signals and modelled levels, with the aim of reducing and/or reconciling them on the long run. Reduced uncertainty of national GHG inventories through improved comparability with models and observations and piloting top-down approaches recognised in the 2019 refinement of the IPCC 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. Contribution to improving the attribution of GHG fluxes (anthropogenic vs natural) as well as non-GHG atmospheric climate forcers (such as aerosols), including feed-backs. Support the Paris Agreement, in particular the Global Stocktake, and the implementation and monitoring of EU climate policy instruments. Provide input (such as open data, models, methods and protocols) and contributions to international programmes and assessments (such as IPCC, Global Carbon Project).
Eligible Activities
Actions should aim at reconciling national greenhouse gas inventories with relevant assessment and monitoring systems in Europe (in particular EU and Horizon Europe Associated Countries) including observations from a wide range of monitoring networks, in-situ and remote-sensed) at a range of scales by comparing their results. Aerosols and their precursors should also be included in the analysis, as well as other air pollutants where relevant (e.g., co-emitted species). Special attention should be given to establishing how the use of top-down techniques that can support the verification of national greenhouse gas inventories and other regulated estimates of emissions and removals, in order to improve or supplement the methods/approaches currently used. Ideally case studies in collaboration with one or more national inventory compilers should be organised for this purpose..

Objective
Support climate policies through an enhanced understanding of existing and emerging carbon dioxide removal options in terms of their technical readiness, key requirements (land and other resource needs, geographical and geological constraints, primary energy needs, etc.), short- and long-term sequestration potential, permanence, impacts (environmental, social, health, resource depletion, etc.) including potential co-benefits. Support climate models and integrated assessment models through an improved parametrisation of these technologies and solutions, allowing their better integration into pathways and strategies and broadening the carbon dioxide removal technology options that can be numerically modelled.
Eligible Activities
Projects under this topic should identify an extended range of nature-based and technical CDR methods, analyse and characterise them in a consistent and transparent assessment framework. In this way, projects should: Deliver realistic estimates of each approach’s potential scale, cost, and effectiveness: on the basis of factors such as technical readiness, key land and other resource needs, geographical and geological constraints, primary energy needs (and associated impacts, including emissions), shortand long-term sequestration potential (including risk of non-permanence), key impacts (environmental, social, health, resource depletion, etc.) and risks. Allow the better parametrisation of integrated assessment models with respect to removals as well a better design of forward-looking policies. Develop abatement cost estimates in function of time profile as well variables like scale of deployment and key input factors. Explore efficient incentive and governance frameworks to facilitate CDR uptake at scale, including social acceptance, ethical and regulatory considerations, as well as identifying major issues and options for establishing MRV and accounting systems associated with CDR in general and specific technologies where applicable.

Eligible Activities
The proposal is expected to address high-risk/high return technology developments for game changing renewable energy technologies including catalyst development, dedicated storage systems and integration of renewable energy technologies into a single energy generation system, heating & cooling systems, fuels production systems, hybrid electricity generation solutions between different renewable energy sources, direct utilization of renewable energy sources. The following areas should not be covered as they fall within the scope of partnerships or other calls: Pure material research; Conventional hydrogen production and fuel cells; Batteries. However the production of renewable hydrogen directly from renewable energy sources is within the scope of the topic. The proposal should validate its concept to TRL 3 or TRL 4 through a robust research methodology and activities, establish the technological feasibility of its concept, consider transfer developments in sectors other than energy whenever relevant, as they may provide ideas, experiences, technology contributions, knowledge, new approaches, innovative materials and skills.

Eligible Activities
Develop renovation solutions for a range of needs (from renovations limited in scope to deep renovations) applying predominantly re-used and / or recycled and/or biosourced construction materials / products in a cradle-to-cradle approach, allowing for installation without significantly modifying the structure of the building (or without overloading existing structures) and demonstrating a high replication and industrial potential. Develop multi-functional (passive & active) and scalable renovation solutions to improve energy performance of buildings, applicable to different building types based on prefabricated components and integrated RES systems. Develop building envelope solutions with integral means for combined active/passive management of energy transfer, i.e., integrating RES for active heat and sound insulation and direct on-site renewable electricity generation. Seek to support the integration of local sources of reused components and secondary raw materials in the renovation packages relying, where relevant, on urban mining. Develop novel testing methodologies oriented towards assessing the long-term performance of the elements. This should include the estimation of durability and service life. Model and test in actual scale the materials and components selected.

For this call, projects shall develop, innovate, provide, validate and/or improve services provided by Digital Innovation Hubs. Tangible innovation services shall be provided by DIHs. They shall aim at supporting the set-up and realisation of digital innovation activities realised by stakeholders of agri-food communities and related networks. One or more DIHs shall develop and/or deliver and validate their function as a service provider, helping agri-food companies and related stakeholders to become more competitive by improving their business, products and/or production processes. DIHs shall act as a one-stop shop, serving agri-food related companies within their region and making agri-food related businesses more competitive by speeding up the development and uptake of digital innovations. The infrastructure will define the requirements for a fully operational QKD infrastructure facility covering EU needs in terms of testing, experimentation, and validation of QKD devices, technologies and systems, with a view to their accreditation; (including the definition of mutual recognition criteria in security). Coordinate national QCI projects: support discussions on user requirements and use cases, and return of experience from the deployment of advanced national quantum systems and networks including on EU QKD components and systems; coordinate the activities for developing an EU QKD ecosystem and the industrialisation of QKD devices in the EU; support the discussions on the further development of the national deployment plans and strategic efforts, for achieving an overall EuroQCI system (spatial and terrestrial segments).

to encourage the development of new, innovative, high-level integrated transnational study programmes at Master level. Collaborate and establish networks and communities of practice with teacher education providers, teacher associations, public organisations involved in teacher education and other relevant actors to create innovative strategies and programmes for initial and continuous professional development for teachers and schools. Develop and deliver joint, innovative and effective learning modules on teacher education and for teacher competences on challenging and/or new pedagogical matters of common concern. Develop joint learning offer with a strong European dimension that includes mobility activities in all its forms. Identify effective ways to remove obstacles of mobility and identify conditions, including practical arrangements and recognition of learning. Involve schools and in particular training schools to experiment and share innovative new ways of teaching (including for distance and blended approaches to teaching and learning).

Objective
Alliances for Innovation aim to strengthen Europe’s innovation capacity by boosting innovation through cooperation and flow of knowledge among higher education, vocational education and training (both initial and continuous), and the broader socio-economic environment, including research. They also aim to boost the provision of new skills and address skills mismatches by designing and creating new curricula for higher education (HE) and vocational education and training (VET), supporting the development of a sense of initiative and entrepreneurial mind-sets in the EU. These partnerships shall implement a coherent and comprehensive set of sectoral or cross-sectoral activities, which should be adaptable to future knowledge developments across the EU. To boost innovation, the focus will be on digital skills as they are increasingly important in all job profiles across the entire labour market. Also, the transition to a circular and greener economy needs to be underpinned by changes to qualifications and national education and training curricula to meet emerging professional needs for green skills and sustainable development. Alliances for Sectoral Cooperation on Skills (implementing the ‘Blueprint’) (European Skills Agenda for sustainable competitiveness, social fairness and resilience: https://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=1223) aim to create new strategic approaches and cooperation for concrete skills development solutions – both in the short and the medium term – in given economic sectors, or in areas implementing a major action of the European Skills Agenda for sustainable competitiveness, social fairness and resilience, the Pact for Skills. The main objective of the Pact is to mobilise and incentivize all relevant stakeholders to take concrete actions for the upskilling and reskilling of the workforce, by pooling efforts and setting up partnerships, also at EU level addressing the needs of the labour market, supporting green and digital transitions as well as national, regional and local skills and growth strategies. Therefore, the deliverables of Alliances for Sectoral Cooperation on Skills, i.e. sectoral skills intelligence, skills strategies, occupational profiles, training programmes, and long-term planning, will be an important contribution to the work of the sectoral partnerships that have joined the Pact for Skills. Alliances for Sectoral Cooperation on Skills seek to tackle skills gaps on the labour market that hamper growth, innovation and competitiveness in specific sectors or areas, aiming both at short term interventions and long term strategies. These Alliances will be implemented in the 14 industrial ecosystems identified in the New Industrial Strategy for Europe (COM/2020/102 final: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/ TXT/?uri=CELEX:52020DC0102) (1. Tourism; 2. Mobility-Transport-Automotive; 3. Aerospace & Defence; 4. Construction; 5. Agri-food; 6. Low-carbon energy Intensive Industries; 7. Textile; 8. Creative & Cultural Industries; 9. Digital; 10. Renewable Energy; 11. Electronics; 12. Retail; 13. Proximity & Social Economy; 14. Health). The Alliances aim to build the base for the Pact for Skills and define the pathway that should be continued after the project is finalised.
Eligible Activities
Developing a strategic approach to sectoral cooperation on skills; Projects should then work on developing training content for emerging occupational profiles. Delivering the ‘core’ curricula and training programmes; Developing actions to facilitate intergenerational transfer of professional knowledge;Designing a long term action plan for the progressive roll-out of project deliverables after the project has finished

Objective
to provide relevant, innovative and labour market oriented Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training programmes for both formal and informal training with a main focus on girls and youth living in vulnerable situation in view of enhancing selfand employment opportunities.
Eligible Activities
• Partnering with training institutions and capacity building • Identification and planning activities, including needs assessment, feasibility studies and piloted innovative training • Development of training methodologies that take into account both the learning capacity and patterns of the trainees and the local labour market • To design and develop training activities that provide trainees the skills and competences required in the workplace in formal and informal labour markets • Training activities supporting skills development in general, but also ensuring economic empowerment of women and vulnerable groups • To improve equitable access to TEVET through provision of scholarships/ bursaries to females and vulnerable students, guidance and counselling programmes in secondary schools to raise awareness on the advantages of technical careers as well as attachments schemes for transition to the labour market
