Hello readers! In the 1st of May 2022 edition, we monitored the 17 new calls recently issued by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. The EIT is an EU body created by the European Union in 2008 to strengthen Europe’s ability to innovate. As an integral part of Horizon Europe Programme, the EIT initiative drives innovation across Europe by bringing together organisations from business, education and research and find innovate solutions to pressing global challenges to create, cooperate and innovate. The new EIT calls for funding are open to current and new Knowledge Innovation Communities. Currently the EIT KICs are eight working in different societal challenges: climate change; digital transition; food sector; health; sustainable energy; manufacturing; raw materials; urban mobility. Almost 1bn Euros was allocated for funding calls for KIC new business plans, cross-KIC initiatives, Higher Education Innovation activities. We also monitored 16 new funding calls issued by the Europeaid Programme for global development in extra-European countries.

The action will support a timely implementation of the new legislation through capacity building activities. It is divided in two subtopics: subtopic a) on patient experts, subtopic b) on clinical experts.

Eligible Activities

a) Increasing the capacity of patient organisations and learned societies to provide robust and meaningful input to HTA activities carried out by the Coordination Group and its subgroups, including dissemination of the output produced; b) Increasing the knowledge of patients and clinical experts on the new Union HTA legal framework, clarifying their role when invited to contribute to joint HTA activities for their subject matter expertise and acting in individual capacity (rather than representing any particular organisation, institution, or Member State); c) Ensuring the appropriate implementation of the rules to ensure the independence and impartiality of patients and clinical experts involved in joint HTA work.

This action will contribute to addressing serious concerns about the lack of availability of vital devices in the medium to long term by increasing capacity of notified bodies and preparedness of market operators, in particular SMEs, with a particular focus on IVDs..

Eligible Activities

a) Supporting training, coaching and internship activities addressed to medical devices’ notified bodies as well as third-party entities (conformity assessment bodies) on the process to become a notified body for medical devices; b) Capacity building activities such as webinars, workshops, targeted feedback and informative sessions addressed to market operators; c) Appraisal of the certification demand, with the objective to identify the types of devices for which availability of notified bodies is particularly low or lacking; d) Proposing solutions to facilitate matching the demand of market operators with the availability of notified bodies, in particular in the area of IVDs where SMEs are prominent.

The main objective of this action is to increase awareness, knowledge generation, and sharing, and capacity building to improve mental health and psychological wellbeing in migrants and refugee populations, with a special focus on Ukraine’s displaced people, via the implementation of promising and best practices and guidance.

Eligible Activities

The activities are about exchanging and implementing best practices that will increase awareness, knowledge sharing and support for health professionals and NGOs working with refugees.Specifically, the actions will support interested stakeholder organisations, to discuss and exchange mental health practices and knowledge, to implement promising and best practices and evidence-based actions. The activities should focus on the needs of Ukraine’s displaced people who are mainly located in Ukraine’s neighbouring countries or in other EU member states and support for NGOs and health professionals speaking Ukrainian/Russian who work with Ukrainian displaced people. The actions will include work that builds on the already available training material of the Health Policy Platform/ ECDC Virtual Academy of the mental health training for professionals dealing with refugees, including translations when needed.

Validation of a high-performance hydrogen liquefier

Objective

Hydrogen is liquefied by reducing its temperature to -253°C which increases its volumetric energy density (cryo-compressed form of hydrogen is recommended as well). This makes it possible to transport hydrogen and store it in large quantities enabling the transport of hydrogen by road/ship from centralised/decentralised production unit to customers or even direct use of liquid hydrogen for on-board storage in the frame of heavy-duty mobility. Hydrogen liquefaction is an energy intensive process and current liquefaction plants rely on technologies and materials that need energy efficiency improvement and cost reduction to lower the overall hydrogen liquefaction cost and activate the LH2 market at a competitive price in the near future.

Eligible Activities

To overcome the technological barriers of hydrogen liquefaction and to prepare a future massive industrial deployment at a high TRL, the high-performance hydrogen sub-system to be developed in proposals should address the following technical issues: An innovative concept different from what is used today. This can be focused at the system level or on one of the sub-system of a liquefaction unit; Construction of an industrial prototype at limited scale; Evaluate the performance, durability and efficiency of the prototype; Demonstrate the capability of the concept to be operated at lower load (in the range 50100% of the nominal capacity) to be in line with future of renewable/low-carbon hydrogen production -e.g. by water electrolysis coupled with renewable electricity); Demonstrate according to the industrial prototype operation the H2 liquefaction energy intensity target between 8 - 10 kWh/kg considering feed hydrogen at 20 bar and 15 °C; The validated industrial prototype should prove and support the scalability of the innovative concept to suit flowrates above 100 TPD. TRL start of the project: 3 and TRL at the end of the project: 5

In order to contribute to the 2030 Climate plan, the ‘Fit for 55’ climate action plan and Green Deal, it is of the utmost importance that the quality of hydrogen fuel dispensed at the Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) is meeting the applicable requirements (Directive on Alternative Fuels Infrastructure, Directive 2014/94/EU[1] and proposal for a regulation on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure 2021/0223(COD) and standards EN17124:2018 & ISO14687:2019. The presence of impurities will cause Fuel Cell (FC) degradation and will dramatically impact the FC durability of the zero emission Fuel Cell Electrical Vehicles (FCEV’s). This will have detrimental effects on customer satisfaction and competitiveness of the FC technology, jeopardising the establishment of the hydrogen society.

Eligible Activities

The HyCoRa and HYDRAITE FCH JU funded projects focussed on the impact of hydrogen impurities on the FC (in particular to assess the severity level) and conducted a limited sampling effort, resulting in about 48 samples taken and analysed from the market over a period of about 6 years. The outcome was that not all HRS are conform to the existing quality standards; in addition, this amount of publicly accessible data is too limited to be representative to the occurrence of impurities in the EU market. Such information is required in order to enable the cost-efficient RA quality assurance approach (requiring the Occurrence Class next to Severity Level as described in EN17124:2018).

Development and validation of pressurised high temperature steam electrolysis stacks (Solid Oxide Electrolysis)

Hydrogen is stored, transported or used pressurised with variable pressures depending on user cases (e.g. between 7 and 70 bar for various industrial applications and grid injection, up to 200 bar for filling gas cylinders, as well as up to 350 and 700 bar in refuelling stations). Hydrogen compression requires energy, which negatively affects overall process efficiency and hydrogen molecule final cost. Pressurised electrolysis therefore has the potential to provide an efficient solution for delivery of pressurised hydrogen at reduced cost. It also enables a low emissions form of hydrogen production, including down to zero emissions if powered solely by renewables. It is expected that this topic will provide breakthrough and game changing technologies for energy efficient pressurised hydrogen production using solid oxide electrolysers (SOEL) and contributing to the overall objective of the SRIA of the Clean Hydrogen JU, namely the hydrogen production cost of 3 €/kg by 2030.

Eligible Activities

Proposals for this topic should set out a credible pathway to contribute to the development and validation of pressurised SOEL with technological breakthroughs aiming at designing and operating a stack at an optimal pressure with eventual assistance of a downstream compression process to reach higher delivery pressure. Electrochemical compression in the stack can also be considered. To tackle these challenges, the proposals should focus on system and stack design, as well as fabrication, assembly and testing of stack in the conditions suitable for the relevant business cases.

DIH-World is looking for innovative experiments across Europe that integrates digital technologies in the processes, products or services of manufacturing SMEs. Innovative experiments are projects to be implemented by a consortium made of an SME and a Digital Innovation Hub. To support the integration of digital technologies in the processes, products or services of an SME The innovative experiments are open to any of the following technologies, as far as they contribute to boost the digitalisation level of the participating SMEs: Smart modelling; Robotics; Internet of Things; Cyber Physical Systems; 3D Printing; Data analytics; Artificial Intelligence; Cloud technologies; High Performance Computing; Laser technologies; Cognitive Autonomous Systems; Human-robot interaction; Cybersecurity; Sensors.

Eligible Activities

The selected innovative technology experiments will be joining the DIH-World community, boosting the interaction and cross border cooperation among DIHs and SMEs, and also among DIHs from the European Network. • Meetings (in person or remotely): o Kick-off meeting of the DIH-World selected experiments; o Participation in the Individual Monitoring Meeting with DIH-World monitoring team; o Participation in the Project final monitoring event; o Participate, if officially required and communicated by the Contracting Authority, to workshops, webinar or training session organised by DIH-World consortium or by any of the supporting actions promoted by the EC. • Dissemination: creation of at least 2 dissemination materials; • Deliverables: preparation and delivery of the experiment deliverables: Trial Handbook and cost statement.

Objective

Central objective of the Coordination and Support Action is to maximize existing European HPC knowledge and expertise across Europe. The tasks and services will provide a single focal point at European level, which will be responsible for the coordination of the National Competence Centres (NCCs) for HPC and the European Centres of Excellence for HPC Applications (CoEs), the exchange of best practices within and between the two initiatives, facilitating the sharing of applications, knowledge and information, networking and training across NCCs and CoEs

Eligible Activities

Proposals should aim at coordinating the National Competence Centres (NCCs) for HPC and European Centres of Excellence for HPC Applications (CoEs). In particular, it is expected to establish a communication platform, facilitate dialogue, promote the objectives of the Centres and organize outreach events and workshops (on topics identified by the NCCs and CoEs). The activities should leverage on synergies and complementarity of the centres. It is expected to identify potential training solutions and tools available from the NCCs network and the CoEs to support and assist NCCs in addressing requests and/or needs of their constituencies and help networking of respective national and European activities, for example, through the provision of mentoring and twinning schemes.

In doing so, the EU seeks to raise awareness of the need for more women innovators and create role models for women and girls everywhere. The Prize is awarded to the women who have created the largest impact on the EU innovation ecosystem by transforming ideas into new and advanced products and services to benefit people and planet.The Prize is launched and managed by the Agency, and the winners are chosen by an independent expert jury. There are two prize categories: Women Innovators and Rising Innovators. In the first category, three prizes of EUR 100 000 each are awarded to the three highest-ranked applications. In the second category, three prizes of EUR 50 000 are awarded to the three highest-ranked applications from promising ‘Rising Innovators’ under the age of 35.

In response to this topic, EIT Climate-KIC should show how the KIC could contribute to the outcomes and impacts described in the KIC Strategic Agenda and the KPIs in the EIT Impact Framework following the specific EIT Climate-KIC’s Impact Pathways, the likely scale and significance of this contribution, and the measures to maximise these impacts in the context of Horizon Europe. Each activity included in the Business Plan should contribute to at least one core EIT KPI.

Eligible Activities

KICs will undertake in particular: (a) innovation activities and investments with Union added value; (b) innovation-driven research, experimentation, prototyping and demonstration in areas of key economic, environmental and societal interest and drawing on the results stemming from Union and national research; (c) education and training activities in particular at master's and doctoral level, as well as professional training courses, in areas with the potential to meet future European socio-economic and socioecological needs and which expand the Union’s talent base, promote the development of innovation-related skills; (d) actions as part of the pilot higher education initiative to better integrate HEIs in innovation value chains and ecosystems; (e) outreach activities and the dissemination of best practices in the field of innovation with a focus on the development of cooperation between higher education, research and business, including the service and financial sectors, and, where relevant, public and third sector organisations;(f) RIS activities, fully integrated in the KICs’ multiannual strategy and linked to the relevant smart specialisation strategies; (g) to seek synergies and complementarities between KIC activities and existing Union, national and regional programmes; (h) to mobilise funds from public and private sources; (i) to provide, on request, information on research and innovation outputs and results, and related intellectual rights.

Promoting European innovation in education

Objective

The project will support closer collaboration in the digital education sector in Europe amongst European EdTech start-ups/SMEs and other relevant stakeholders and across Europe. It will foster the exchange of good practices at pan-European level, aiming at increased capacities of the national education systems and at distance, innovative, effective and inclusive learning. It will also foster increased opportunities for the European EdTech industry, while promoting European ethical values regarding the use of educational technologies and data shared in Europe. It will contribute to increasing synergies and complementarity between initiatives in digital education, in particular in view of the Erasmus programme and Horizon Europe. It will also help the education sector to be better prepared for possible future crisis such as additional lock-downs to due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Objective: This action will support the digital transformation of the education sector at European level by boosting innovation in education in Europe by supporting EdTech startups and SMEs to accelerate their disruptive EdTech solutions. The project will support the strategic priority of the Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027 and in full synergy with, and complementarity to, the objective of setting up a European Digital Education Hub and in line with the European Education Area framework.

Eligible Activities

Host a pan-European network to promote European excellence in educational innovation by bringing together European EdTech start-ups/SMEs, with other relevant actors such as technology providers, industry associations and investors, policy makers and ministries, schools, teachers, universities, research organisations, experts and NGOs, and linking this network to other existing pan-European networks/fora. Support cooperation between EdTech start-ups/SMEs and other stakeholders of a maximum number of Member States and Associated countries to exchange best practises, analyse successful applications of digital technologies and potential market uptake, explore lessons learned during and after the Covid-19 crisis. This should be done in close cooperation with the development of the European Education Area. Support EdTech companies with business and educational mentoring and training services and by gaining insights and understanding market trends and needs by collecting comprehensive and high-value up-to-date data to better understand the EdTech start-ups/SMEs landscape in Europe. Develop guidelines aiming at fostering a wider European EdTech industry for the development of digital education content, solutions and tools, in light of technological needs (connectivity, platforms, interoperability, standardisation, security and privacy issues, use of emerging technologies such as AI or data) as well as pedagogical, societal and ethical aspects, based on relevant scientific evidence and in consultation with European Education area stakeholders. Propose a roadmap towards a European EdTech ecosystem promoting European excellence in educational innovation, including how local, regional, national and European efforts can be combined.

Eligible Activities

Experiments are expected to cover any segments in the manufacturing sector, including (but not limited to) discrete manufacturing, continuous production, or construction. Experiments should aim at covering the development and uptake of digital technologies especially in segments where these are underexploited. In line with the DIGITbrain Solution, experiments are expected to model behaviour of an Industrial Product (manufacturing machine, line or mechatronic system) with the means of a Digital Twin. Besides, experiments are expected to demonstrate benefits in different phases of the life cycle of the Industrial Product, its adaption and/or evolution to new generations of the industrial product. Experiments are expecting to consider also environmental impacts.

Objective

To enhance entrepreneurship, develop the international outlook and competitiveness of European SMEs and foster potential start-up entrepreneurs and newly-established micro and small enterprises in the Participating Countries.The purpose of this call for proposals is to select Intermediary Organisations (IOs) to implement the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme at local level. They will, in particular, recruit the entrepreneurs and assist them to benefit from the programme. This call for proposals will therefore support actions of organisations enhancing and facilitating the exchanges of new with host entrepreneurs. 1. To provide on-the-job-training for new entrepreneurs with established host entrepreneurs in small and medium-sized enterprises abroad in the SMP Participating Countries in order to facilitate a successful start-up, and development of their business ideas; 2. To foster sharing of experience and information between entrepreneurs on the obstacles and challenges of starting up and developing their businesses; 3. To enhance market access and identification of potential partners for new and established entrepreneurs in other EU and SMP Participating Countries; also new entrepreneurs with EU citizenship have the possibility to go on an exchange with host entrepreneurs in the EYE global destinations; 4. To support networking between entrepreneurs from different SMP Participating Countries by building on knowledge and experience. 5. To foster matching of entrepreneurs from “underrepresented” countries.

Eligible Activities

In the framework of this GALACTICA project call, two different types of vouchers are offered. The vouchers will be addressed to SMEs with innovative solutions that could be part of a cross sectoral and cross border value chains in the sectors of aerospace, textile and advanced manufacturing. Voucher types offered: Pioneer Acceleration Voucher. Scope: The main goal is to support the exploration of new cross-sectoral value chains feasibility with focus on developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP1) connecting two or more of the sectors (aerospace, textile, advanced manufacturing). Indicative supported activities/ideas: - Building of the prototype in form of a Minimum Viable Product, - Testing of the hypothesis with business measurements and user validation tests that will provide crucial information for learning about the hypothesis validity, - Adjusting the product/service with a dedicated learning process Orbital Projects Voucher.
