Hello readers! In the 17th of July 2022 edition, we gave a look to all the new funding calls published recently. The European Research Council issued recently the call for ERC Starting Grants. This funding opportunity addresses research ideas proposed by early-career scientists who are expected to work in conjunction with and on behalf of Host Institutions based in EU or in Horizon Europe Associate countries. The Cassini prize is an award for projects to be proposed to the EUSPA Agency, with the objective to stimulate the development of innovative solutions using EU Space Programme data to solve problems related to detection and tracking of plastic pollution. The ODIN open call intends to fund pilot studies focused on the enhancement of hospital safety, productivity and quality through the implementation of the European Smart Hospitals of the Future. Five new open calls are open through the Europeaid Programme supporting projects for International Development and Cooperation initiatives. Have a good read!

NGI Assure is looking for building blocks that contribute to providing such assurances include (but are not limited to) quantum-proof cryptography, public key infrastructure, (augmented) authenticated key exchange, ratchet mechanisms (such as the Noise protocol) that securely chain key material, distributed hash tables and DAGs to make P2P interaction more secure, conflict-free replicated data types, mixnets and onion routing mechanisms, consensus protocols, distributed ledgers and (post) blockchain technologies that create redundant data sets managed independently by mutually distrustful parties, a priori usage control, symbolic and formal proofs, and tamperproof open hardware implementations of core cryptographic primitives. The work needs to become available under free and open source licenses. We are looking for deep tech components; the outcomes of NGI Assure shall contribute towards identifying and solving current issues, but do not need to provide a complete solution by themselves (although they may).

Demonstrate at large scale a new biorefinery concept extracting maximum value from (all components of) the sustainably sourced bio-based feedstock to produce a variety of materials/products in the scope of CBE JU. Set up and operate a biorefinery model that maximises the total value extracted from the input bio-based feedstock, and to minimise the required input (feedstock, energy, other chemicals, other process materials), rather than ‘just’ focusing on a small number of main products, applying efficient use of biomass fractions (including cascading approach to valorise side-streams where applicable). Demonstrate the ‘zero-waste’ ambition by: Reducing any exhaust emissions from the industrial installation. These include exhaust flows that are usually not considered in the common pollution prevention and control operations, such as hot water, vapours, odours, etc. Designing circular processes and looking on the best practices already available or under development, including in other EU R&I programmes. Applying circular by design concepts to output materials/products.

Objective
Project results should contribute to the following expected outcomes: Diversified bio-based polymer product portfolio, in terms of polymer types and range of applications under stringent operating conditions. Improved safety, sustainability, and circularity profiles of the end-products that use specialty bio-based polymers for applications under stringent operating conditions. Improved strategic autonomy and lower dependency of the EU on imports of specialty polymers for stringent operating conditions in specific market sectors. Proposals under this topic should: Develop bio-based polymers with tailored functional properties for a pre-defined range of applications for market requirements under stringent conditions. The bio-based polymers should be circular-by-design, allowing for their reuse and recycling, including composting in case of biodegradable biopolymers. Develop validation tests (e.g., test rigs and testing procedures) and test the bio-based polymers against the application requirements. These tests should include their end-of-life handling. Provide an assessment of the environmental sustainability of the developed bio-based polymers. Provision for the project integrating ‘safe-and-sustainable-by-design’ generic criteria and framework considerations[4], in line with the EU Chemicals strategy for sustainability. Apply and/or adapt existing/mature or novel digital technologies provided that they are instrumental to achieving the project’s outcomes and scope. Applications of digital technologies that should be considered in the scope are among the following areas: i) chemicals, materials and process design & modelling ii) process monitoring and optimisation and iii) data analytics and data management of the production of bio-based polymers in the scope.

KICs will undertake in particular: (a) innovation activities and investments with Union added value; (b) innovation-driven research, experimentation, prototyping and demonstration in areas of key economic, environmental and societal interest and drawing on the results stemming from Union and national research; (c) education and training activities in particular at master's and doctoral level, as well as professional training courses, in areas with the potential to meet future European socio-economic and socio-ecological needs and which expand the Union’s talent base, promote the development of innovation-related skills; (d) actions as part of the pilot higher education initiative to better integrate HEIs in innovation value chains and ecosystems; (e) outreach activities and the dissemination of best practices in the field of innovation with a focus on the development of cooperation between higher education, research and business, including the service and financial sectors, and, where relevant, public and third sector organisations;(f) RIS activities, fully integrated in the KICs’ multiannual strategy and linked to the relevant smart specialisation strategies; (g) to seek synergies and complementarities between KIC activities and existing Union, national and regional programmes; (h) to mobilise funds from public and private sources; (i) to provide, on request, information on research and innovation outputs and results, and related intellectual rights.

Objective
Relevant and appropriate EIT InnoEnergy Business Plan for 2023-2024 implementation of the KIC’s multiannual strategy, demonstrating its excellence (including objectives and ambition; methodology; financial sustainability), its impact (including KIC pathways towards impact; measures to maximise impact - dissemination, exploitation and communication) and its quality and efficiency of the implementation (including work plan and resources at portfolio level; capacity of participants and KIC Partnership as a whole).
Eligible Activities
KICs will undertake in particular: (a) innovation activities and investments with Union added value; (b) innovation-driven research, experimentation, prototyping and demonstration in areas of key economic, environmental and societal interest and drawing on the results stemming from Union and national research; (c) education and training activities in particular at master's and doctoral level, as well as professional training courses, in areas with the potential to meet future European socio-economic and socioecological needs and which expand the Union’s talent base, promote the development of innovation-related skills; (d) actions as part of the pilot higher education initiative to better integrate HEIs in innovation value chains and ecosystems; (e) outreach activities and the dissemination of best practices in the field of innovation with a focus on the development of cooperation between higher education, research and business, including the service and financial sectors, and, where relevant, public and third sector organisations;(f) RIS activities, fully integrated in the KICs’ multiannual strategy and linked to the relevant smart specialisation strategies; (g) to seek synergies and complementarities between KIC activities and existing Union, national and regional programmes; (h) to mobilise funds from public and private sources; (i) to provide, on request, information on research and innovation outputs and results, and related intellectual rights.
Eligible Applicants
this Invitation is addressed to the KICs only. the applicants must be established in one of the eligible countries, i.e.: – the Member States (MS) of the European Union (EU) including their outermost regions; – the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) linked to the Member States; – eligible non-EU countries: - Countries associated to Horizon Europe; - Certain low- and middleincome countries.

Objective
Testing and measuring the feasibility and effectiveness of financial incentives for the takeback of small used/waste EEE and portable batteries in view of setting up a stakeholder platform. Bringing lifecycle into building policy – Level(s) case studies
Eligible Activities
The proposed project should test, as a primary objective, the feasibility and effectiveness of setting up financial incentives such as reward schemes, deposit refund schemes, the use of postal services and/or systems calculating the residual value of small electronics and portable batteries for subsequent reuse and/or recovery. Feasibility of the proposed solutions should also be checked at EU level. In particular, the project should prepare the ground to establish and bring together potentially in a single platform all relevant public and private actors. The objective of this project is to provide relevant information to the European Commission, based on real building project applications of the Level(s) indicators, so that the Commission in turn can produce case studies to the sector. Beyond the actual quantified indicators, when relevant for different options considered, the case studies should present in depth how building projects have applied the Level(s) indicators, such as in terms of when in the building projects they were used, which kinds of building professionals were involved, how the use of the indicators at different life cycle stages impacted the building process in terms of e.g. choice of design, material, process and collaboration.

Objective

Eligible Activities
The main objective of the proposed project should is to reinforce the EBP capabilities in order to allow it to contribute the evidence required to inform the successful delivery of the EU Biodiversity Strategy. Moreover, to be able to generate the best possible information outputs for the breeding season, it is also important to render the EBP data compatible with those of the other EBCC10 projects (EBBA2 and PECBMS), as the combination of the datasets and know-how from all these projects would, certainly, increase the overall efficiency and value of the applied deliveries that could be developed in the near future

Objective

Objective
Projects under the Climate Change Mitigation Priority Area should contribute to the socially just and sustainable transition towards a climate neutral economy by 2050 and to reaching the EU emission reduction target for 2030 to at least 55% compared with 1990 levels.
Eligible Activities
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the sectors not covered by the EU Emissions Trading System, including the reduction of use of fluorinated greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances. Actions which enhance the functioning of the Emissions Trading System and which have an impact on energy and greenhouse gas intensive industrial production. Increase the generation and use of renewable energy and improvement of energy efficiency (as far as not covered by specific calls under the Clean Energy Transition sub-programme). The development of land and sea management practices which have an impact on emissions and removals of emissions, conservation and enhancement of natural carbon sinks

Towards a zero-emission building stock: strengthening the enabling framework for deep renovation

Objective
This topic aims to increase the level of energy performance reached after building renovation and the number of ‘deep renovations’. This requires addressing the obstacles to deep renovation, which are present at different levels. When deep renovation cannot be implemented in one step, staged deep renovation is an option which should be promoted through public policies. It implies that the measures implemented comply with a long-term deep renovation strategy for the building, thus avoiding lock-in effects. Renovation passports are essential to support staged deep renovation and the proposal for an EPBD recast sets up a framework for their introduction by Member States. Their roll-out needs to be supported in close link with energy performance certificates and one-stop-shops for building renovation.
Eligible Activities
Proposals should increase the uptake of deep renovation, by addressing one of the following areas; addressing several areas does not necessarily increase the relevance of the proposal. Regardless of the area(s) chosen, proposals should be well tailored to the action context in terms of building segment(s) and typology(ies), climatic zone(s), and legal, administrative, economic, market related or social conditions, and well aligned with the national and/or local initiatives in place or under development. Proposals should also involve the key stakeholders relevant to the activities and demonstrate the endorsement of the approaches proposed. 1. Building renovation passports 2. Objective
Under the ‘Fit for 55’ Package to implement the European Green Deal, the Commission proposed a whole set of new measures to revise the main pieces of climate and energy legislation, notably the Energy Efficiency Directive, the Renewable Energy Directive and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. The revisions will make the policy framework for sustainable energy more stringent and ambitious. While the legislative framework offers a good amount of flexibility to Member States to design the policy measures according to their needs and framework conditions, accurate monitoring, projecting and evaluation are essential elements of implementation. Importantly, the legislation is strongly interrelated and needs to be implemented and reported in an integrated, consistent way. With these challenges in mind, the topic aims to support the implementation of the main pieces of legislation in the field of sustainable energy, notably of the Energy Efficiency Directive (Scope A), the Renewable Energy Directive (Scope B) and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive
Eligible Activities
ctions under Scope C are expected to address core provisions and aspects of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, in particular those that are subject to major changes or that have been newly introduced under the ‘Fit for 55’ recast. These are for example provisions related to Minimum Energy Performance standards, National Building Renovation plans, Renovation passports, zero-emission buildings and infrastructure for sustainable mobility. Note that actions to support the design and implementation of specific policies in the field of buildings are also part of other vertical topics.

The applicant VOD platforms must present a minimum European Dimension in their catalogue. The applicant must present a catalogue or an aggregated catalogue (in case of several VOD services involved in the consortium) constituted by: at least a total of 1000 available audiovisual works; at least 30% of audiovisual works from countries participating in the MEDIA strand; include audiovisual works from at least five countries participating in the MEDIA strand representing at least five different official languages of these participating countries. The 30% of European audiovisual works within the catalogue must be majority produced by a producer or producers established in the countries participating in the MEDIA strand.

The principal objective of the call is to encourage and to facilitate the active engagement of a wide network of European citizens around the European Elections 2024.The European Parliament is looking to co-finance projects articulating a coherent, consistent and cost efficient work programme to engage with citizens through offline and online communication activities.
Eligible Activities
This action consists of the design and implementation of capacity building through training and other actions, aiming at providing change-makers with skills, competences, tools and motivation to play an active role in the democratic life and in the promotion of the democratic values, especially by mobilising their community to participate in the European Elections in 2024. After the training, the beneficiary should monitor and report on the communication engagement activities organised by the trained change-makers. The change-makers should commit to organise at least 2 activities with an outreach of at least 100 persons in total in a physical setting in their community using the skills and competences previously acquired through capacity-building.
