Hello readers! In the 10th October 2021 edition, our weekly monitor reached 306 new calls recently opened by European Institutions and Agencies. This week we monitored some important Competitive calls, that is Open funding calls issued by project Consortia funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme. In particular we made a review of four competitive funding calls with various aims all supporting research and innovation projects. Programme
Public programmes that fund the specific call for proposals, according to specific policy objectives, and accompanied by specific working plans, financial regulations, etc.

Administrations, Institutions and/or Agencies, committed to the implementation of the programmes and funding of coherent initiatives and projects according to the single ongoing call for projects.
Objective
Public calls for projects generally include the general and specific objectives to be achieved by the funded initiatives. Objectives are coherent with the general ones defined by the funding programmes.
Eligible Activities
Projects are expected to be implemented through types of activities identified as eligible to public funding. In many cases, calls also list activitities and connected costs not eligible to public funding from a specific European programme.

Entities eligible to apply for funding can be physical or legal persons. Legal persons can include public and/or private entities. In many cases, calls require applicants to form partnerships or legal consortia, with specific conditions for lead applicans, applicants and associate entities.

Improved vulnerability assessments by law enforcement and local managers of public spaces with a specific focus on countering and/ or preventing terrorist attacks or other forms of severe violence (amok, mass-riots), including attacks with explosives, improvised weapons and vehicles; Better identification of specific vulnerabilities and elaboration of mitigation strategies by security practitioners and policy-makers due to the possibility to simulate attack-scenarios in any public space in realistic conditions and to test and train different prevention and response measures; Improved training of Police Authorities in collaboration with different public and private actors (e. g., crisis management and civil protection authorities, fire brigades, regulatory agencies, emergency health services, security managers, private security organisations, civil society groups etc.) to enhance their preparedness to attacks on public spaces; Enhanced planning capabilities of security practitioners and policy-makers due to the identification of potential vulnerabilities connected to the design/refurbishment and construction/improvement of different public spaces and measures to reduce them by implementing a comprehensive security-by-design approach in urban planning (also including aspects of social inclusion); Enhanced modelling capabilities of security practitioners, policy-makers and research institutions due to the identification of potential vulnerabilities connected to the different public spaces, analysis of crowd behaviour and possible emergence of various threats to security in order to minimise possible threats and vulnerabilities and supporting planning of respective resources and activities.

This topic requires the effective contribution of SSH disciplines and the involvement of SSH experts, institutions as well as the inclusion of relevant SSH expertise, in order to produce meaningful and significant effects enhancing the societal impact of the related research activities.

Contribution to the implementation of the 2020-2024 EU Action Plan on firearms trafficking; Improved intelligence picture of firearms trafficking in Europe, modus operandi of such criminal organisations, both offline and online; European Police Authorities, Customs and Border Guards Authorities, as well as forensics specialists and prosecutors benefit from modern and validated tools, skills and training curricula (including on the lawful court-proof collection of crime evidence) to tackle criminal activities related to firearms trafficking; Harmonised procedures in the investigation of trans-border crimes in full compliance with applicable legislation on protection of personal data; Improved cooperation between European Police and Border Guards Authorities, as well as with international actors, in tackling this form of crime; Strengthened ability of security practitioners to identify organised crime networks involved in firearms trafficking in an early stage; Reduced diversion of firearms into criminal hands in Europe; Enhanced ability of security practitioners to prevent the emergence of organised crime networks involved in firearms trafficking, and respond to the threat of existing organisations; Improved shaping and tuning of regulation related to the fight against firearms trafficking by security policy-makers.

Objective
For the purpose of this prize, artificial photosynthesis (AP) is understood to be a process that aims at mimicking the physical chemistry of natural photosynthesis by absorbing solar energy in the form of photons. The solution is required to use this energy to generate fuel molecules through a synthetic system to be delivered as a single integrated device that utilises either biomimetic, nanotechnology, synthetic biology or a combination of these systems. Meeting the challenge will stimulate innovation and focus research and development towards energy applications in a new energy technology through increased public and commercial interest. Moreover, it will accelerate the development of new innovative energy conversion systems using solar light and natural elements to produce renewable fuels to be used in industry, housing and transport..

Agreement among stakeholders (HVDC systems manufacturers, TSO, Regulators, Standardisation bodies, wind turbine manufacturers, windfarm developers etc.) and planning for the demonstration of a Real Time Demonstrator of Multi-Vendor Multi-Terminal HVDC with Grid Forming Capability, which will lead to the first real-life full scale installation in Europe. New way of framing the European energy system (on- off-shore) architecture and topology. Provide new pathways to offshore energy and development.
Eligible Activities
The supports all the multiple preparatory tasks, which will lead to a global agreement among stakeholders and define the detailed planning for the full-scale industrial demonstrator. These include, but are not limited to: Coordination and organization of a platform involving all stakeholders (HVDC system manufacturers, TSOs, third-party HVDC system integrators, wind turbine manufacturers, offshore wind farm developers). Compatibility of modelling tools towards interoperability. Model sharing between TSOs: legal framework. Roles and responsibilities on interoperability issues.

Eligible Activities
The proposal should address the validation of its concept to TRL 4, presenting a robust research methodology and activities, establishing the technological feasibility of the proposed concept. The methodology should include proper assessment of the environmental, social and economic benefits, and consider transfers of developments in sectors other than energy whenever relevant. These interdisciplinary aspects may provide ideas, experiences, technology contributions, knowledge, new approaches, innovative materials and skills. The applications of those concepts can also be proposed for various sectors. Economic benefits could be for example technology cost reduction, job creations, new businesses and more efficient motors and generators. Proposals may consider the following areas: Technologies providing the possibility of multi-fuel integration and/or the potential for the transversal; Intersectorial decarbonization; Concepts targeting hard-to-decarbonize sectors and energy-intensive applications, such as road/ rail/maritime transport or energy generation through thermal power generators; Flexibility in terms of its scalability to different power/energy demands; Compatibility with local or distributed energy production layouts; Use of already available industrial processes and raw materials for easy TRL upgrading and final transfer to mass production.

Proposals are expected to demonstrate how AI, data, robotics and automation solutions can support workers in their daily tasks, improving working conditions (both physical and social) and work performance/efficiency, while considering safety, security and resilience, as appropriate. The added value to the application field should be demonstrated by qualitative and quantitative industry/production or service relevant KPIs, demonstrators at TRL6-7, benchmarking and progress monitoring processes. The involvement of the application sector stakeholders, including social partners, workers, managers and decision makers must be a key driver in the proposals, not only to identify the needs and the application scenarios, but to be involved in the co-creation and testing and uptake of the solutions and providing feedback to adapt the solutions to optimise the impact on working conditions and performances. The selection of the application sector should prioritise sectors and use-cases where the technology can demonstrate maximum impact and added value.

Proposals submitted to this call should tackle at least one of the following two challenges: A full device with unique features, e.g. targeting a currently untreated disorder, offering unprecedented miniaturisation, low latency closed-loop monitoring-stimulation feedback (if necessary), ultra-low power consumption, low/moderate invasiveness (e.g. compatible with implantation with endoscopic techniques), high-resolution, sustainable, etc. or New or nascent physical principles or methodologies that could be the basis for future brain sensing and/or stimulation technologies, with clear and quantifiable advantages. Focus is on techniques that can offer unprecedented data on brain function or that allow unprecedented modulation of brain activity for therapeutic purposes or brain-computer interfacing.
Eligible Activities
Proposals targeting a full device are strongly encouraged to establish a plausible work plan to realise by the end of the project at least 1) a working prototype device or instrument and 2) pre-clinical data with proof of therapeutic action. Proposals targeting the discovery of a new mechanism for monitor and/or stimulate are advised to de-risk the work plan by exploring multiple strategies in parallel, merging competing strategies into a single proposal for cost efficiencies and increased likelihood of success. Consortia considering both targets in a single proposal are advised to carefully analyse whether the high risk inherent to the discovery of new mechanisms or principles could hamper the plausibility of completing a full device hinging on said principles. All proposals must fully justify the clinical need for the targeted development, and structure the work plan accordingly, towards credible future transition to market. Proposals need to consider the cost-benefit of the targeted technology and demonstrate that the outcome will be acceptable by clinicians and patients.

Objective
Cell and gene therapy (CGT) are widely accepted as top biomedical trends for over three years now and continue to evolve in their use for treating human diseases. CGTs are expected to increasingly shape the medical treatment and diagnosis, as we are approaching the era of precision medicine. Cell-based therapy is a promising strategy for effective treatment across a wide range of diseases though the focus so far, has primarily been on cancer, e.g. Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy made from removing T cells from individual patients, engineer them to be able to recognize and kill cancer cells before re-administer them to the same patient. CAR-T cell therapy is widely regarded as having revolutionised the treatment of some blood cancers. Recent research evidence suggests that cell therapy can effectively apply to solid cancers as well. With this Pathfinder Challenge, EIC strategically aims at reinforcing critical components of the European cell and gene therapy community, such as focused research consortia, start-ups and spinoffs, in their ability to compete and sustain in this fiercely competitive field, full of challenges and obstacles all along the way from discovery to the manufacturing step. Proposals submitted to this call should effectively address exactly that, by proposing convincing technological solutions and/or new breakthrough concepts that go far beyond the current state-of-the-art.

Eligible Activities
Environmental compliance assurance practitioners can include those working for authorities and bodies with compliance assurance responsibilities such as local, regional, police and customs authorities, agencies and inspectorates, supreme public audit bodies and the judiciary. Promotion systems and techniques could involve the use of guidance, advisory services, awareness-raising campaigns, partnership agreements, or self-monitoring systems that assist duty-holders to comply. Strategies and policies are aimed at highlevel organization of activities and interventions, especially risk-based ones. Monitoring systems and techniques could relate to site inspections, surveillance (including through use of satellites and drones), spot checks, intelligence-gathering, industry analysis, police investigation, data analysis and environmental audits.

The topic aims to support innovators across Europe to develop innovative solutions that are mobilising private capital, blending public with private financing, setting up long-term and scalable financial instruments and at the same time overcoming legal and structural barriers whilst delivering a highly ambitious sustainable energy project pipeline. Projects are expected to demonstrate innovative approaches in mobilising investments, advancing market boundaries or changing organisational and regulatory structures. In doing so they disrupt existing markets and existing processes.
Eligible Activities
Project Development Assistance (PDA) will be provided to public and private project promoters such as public authorities or their groupings, public/private infrastructure operators and bodies, energy service companies, retail chains, large property owners and services/industry. The action will support building technical, economic and legal expertise needed for project development. The launch of concrete investments is the final aim and deliverable of the project.

Objective
The topic aims to alleviate energy poverty by addressing the poor energy efficiency of dwellings, as a key risk factor causing energy poverty (the other two being low incomes and high energy expenditure). Buildings are still responsible for 40% of Europe’s total energy consumption, and too many Europeans struggle to afford the energy bills for their poorly insulated dwellings with polluting heating/cooling systems. In accordance with the Clean Energy for All Europeans package, Member States, through their National Energy and Climate Plans and Long-Term Renovation Strategies (LTRS), must identify dwellings of people at risk of energy poverty and develop effective strategies for renovating these as a matter of priority. The Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU) (EED), as amended by Directive 2018/2002/EU, requires Member States to take into account the need to reduce energy poverty in the context of their energy efficiency obligations. In addition, the revised EPBD requires Member States to target the least efficient building stock first (“worst first” principle), and address split-incentive dilemmas and market failures as part of the national LTRS.
Eligible Activities
Proposed actions should facilitate the market uptake of renovation approaches for the large-scale rollout of building-related interventions for vulnerable districts, clusters of buildings, or groups of such buildings managed through common building management or housing/home-owners associations (e.g. social housing), in line with the Renovation Wave and the Commission Recommendation on Energy Poverty.

Objective
Cooperation with innovative groups that work on and have developed tools and technologies that can be tested in RIS regions with the aim to solve raw materials value chain related challenges. The innovative groups can be one of the following: start-ups (with focus on start-up's supported by EIT RawMaterials), SMEs, RTOs, other industry groups, etc. The solutions can come from both KAVA activities as well as other Process description and instructions for RIS activities – KAVA 9 3 activities not related to EIT RawMaterials. 2. Train-the-trainer activities intending to: a) increase the entrepreneurship/business skills of students in RIS regions, b) improve the innovation capacity of the Higher education institutions themselves in RIS regions by promoting Knowledge Triangle Integration resulting transformative changes of raw material related education generating overall impact to the region. Thematically: Circular Economy, recycling and zero waste shall be among focus areas. 3. University-Business Cooperation (UBC) activities, e.g. a) internships, b) bonuses for graduates returning to their native country and finding employment in local industry (to leverage brain drain), c) extending / bringing in other best UBC practices to RIS countries, under condition to provide a reasonable amount of the 10.2 (# EIT RIS Active KIC partners) and 16.2 (# RIS HEIs involved in KIC activities) EIT Core KPIs (SA 2021-2027) and optional also 13.2 (#RIS Success stories).
Eligible Activities
The proposal should intend to build a strong community (KTI) and have a clear plan for continuation after the duration of the proposed KAVA project. • All projects must define aims and objectives and lead to specific deliverables, outputs and final results over a defined time schedule and they will be financed by EIT RawMaterials (the KIC) only for a defined duration. • Proposals must meet the highest expectations and performance on the creation of impact (e.g. EIT Core RIS KPI targets; please refer to Strategic Agenda 2021-2027).
Eligible Applicants
In order to be eligible, the applicants (beneficiaries and affiliated entities) must: be legal entities (public or private bodies); be established in one of the eligible countries,

Objective
In order to align with the objectives set in the Strategic Innovation Agenda 2021-2027, as well as with strong challenges for Europe, EIT RawMaterials will call for a limited number of lifelong learning projects dealing with three thematic areas. The vision is to secure sustainable access to critical and strategic raw materials, advanced materials, and processing know-how for the EU industrial ecosystems. In order to deliver on the higher education ambitions outlined in the EIT RawMaterials Strategic Agenda 2021-2027, the higher education focus of KAVA Call 9 shall be on PhD summer/winter schools. The PhD education focus on summer/winter schools in KAVA9, as well as the thematic and pedagogical requirements, was discussed and endorsed by the EIT RawMaterials Education Committee. The EIT RawMaterials seeks three PhD summer/winter schools in order to maximize the impact of PhD education in the EIT RawMaterials education portfolio.

Launched in 2007, it is part of the EU Flagship Initiative https://www.switch-asia. SWITCH to Green and of the Commission’s contribueu/ tion to the achievement of the SDG12 on Responsible Consumption and Production in Asia. UIA is Europe’s Innovation Laboratory for cities.
