Hello readers! In the 22th of May 2022 edition, we monitored a huge number of calls for proposals issued in particular under the Horizon Europe Programme. Our review included all the open and forthcoming funding calls with deadline through the next january 2023. We reached a total number of 385 funding calls documented. In the next weekly issues we will be producing all synopses related to the funding calls. For this week, among the newly included funding calls, we made a thorough review of various opportnities. Under the Creative Europe Programme, it is to be noted the Films on the Move funding call. A new competitive call was issued from the AI Regio Consortium in favour of SMEs interested to Artificial Intelligence experimentations together with Digital Innovations Hubs. MSCA Fellowships are available in future deadlines next autumn for improving post-doctoral projects in Europe. 2 funding calls under the Horizon Europe Programme are aimed at supporting new Artificial Intelligence implementation for social and economic development. A funding call is dedicated to the expansion of Investment Ecosystems in European regions with low innovation propensity. Have a good read!

Programme

Public programmes that fund the specific call for proposals, according to specific policy objectives, and accompanied by specific working plans, financial regulations, etc.

Administration

Administrations, Institutions and/or Agencies, committed to the implementation of the programmes and funding of coherent initiatives and projects according to the single ongoing call for projects.

Objective

Public calls for projects generally include the general and specific objectives to be achieved by the funded initiatives. Objectives are coherent with the general ones defined by the funding programmes.

Eligible Activities

Projects are expected to be implemented through types of activities identified as eligible to public funding. In many cases, calls also list activitities and connected costs not eligible to public funding from a specific European programme.

Validation of a high-performance hydrogen liquefier

Objective

Hydrogen is liquefied by reducing its temperature to -253°C which increases its volumetric energy density (cryo-compressed form of hydrogen is recommended as well). This makes it possible to transport hydrogen and store it in large quantities enabling the transport of hydrogen by road/ship from centralised/decentralised production unit to customers or even direct use of liquid hydrogen for on-board storage in the frame of heavy-duty mobility. Hydrogen liquefaction is an energy intensive process and current liquefaction plants rely on technologies and materials that need energy efficiency improvement and cost reduction to lower the overall hydrogen liquefaction cost and activate the LH2 market at a competitive price in the near future.

Eligible Activities

To overcome the technological barriers of hydrogen liquefaction and to prepare a future massive industrial deployment at a high TRL, the high-performance hydrogen sub-system to be developed in proposals should address the following technical issues: An innovative concept different from what is used today. This can be focused at the system level or on one of the sub-system of a liquefaction unit; Construction of an industrial prototype at limited scale; Evaluate the performance, durability and efficiency of the prototype; Demonstrate the capability of the concept to be operated at lower load (in the range 50100% of the nominal capacity) to be in line with future of renewable/low-carbon hydrogen production -e.g. by water electrolysis coupled with renewable electricity); Demonstrate according to the industrial prototype operation the H2 liquefaction energy intensity target between 8 - 10 kWh/kg considering feed hydrogen at 20 bar and 15 °C; The validated industrial prototype should prove and support the scalability of the innovative concept to suit flowrates above 100 TPD. TRL start of the project: 3 and TRL at the end of the project: 5

Due to its low volumetric density, hydrogen presents major challenges for transportation and distribution. Currently, compressed hydrogen transport faces limitations (mainly the delivery of small quantities of compressed hydrogen at low pressure) which inhibits its potential to become a widespread energy carrier. Moreover, the improvement and scaleup of transport and distribution technologies are needed for hydrogen to be transported efficiently, in high volumes, across large geographical areas. This topic aims to improve the efficiency of compressed hydrogen transport in order to achieve the optimum efficiency, taking into account the physical limitations. The existing solutions operating at 500 bar have not yet reached the physical optimal efficiency and the optimum cost. Research and innovation should address this problem of increasing the mass of hydrogen transported during a transport. This objective can be reached by a significant increase in the operating pressure of the tubes employed in the transport while ensuring the safety of people and goods.

Eligible Activities

Applicants should propose new solutions to decrease the specific weight (e.g. per unit of hydrogen transported) of the package. All proposed solutions should take into account the safety of the peoples and goods. The proposal should describe the method that the applicant will apply to take into account the safety aspects for the transportation system (trailer, container, bundle), tube, frames, pressure relief system (e.g. risk assessment), etc. The proposed solutions should be innovative in terms of capital expenditure. That aspect may be addressed by using, innovative design, cost-effective materials, competitive manufacturing techniques, innovative organisation, etc. The proposals may should also address the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Overall objective is to boost cross-sectoral innovation among groups of SMEs using one or more of our key enabling technologies to develop sustainable products, processes, or services for our four offshore sectors.

Eligible Activities

Project proposals must address at least one of the four topics. Within each topic, it must address at least one or more of the the following fields: Development and production of advanced materials and structures designed to function in the exposed offshore environment. Of particular interest are materials that are either eco-designed, corrosion resistant, light weight, cost-effective or durable. Solutions suitable include materials for offshore multi-use platforms, wind farms and aquaculture as well as vessels. Digitalisation and data technologies for working in offshore environments; Inspection, monitoring, testing integrity; Robotic and digital solutions with a focus on improving operational and personnel health and safety; Satellite technologies for offshore applications and their supply chains; Innovative technologies supporting greater resilience of passenger, supply and emergency transport services. Reduction of waste and environmental impact through prevention, reuse, recycling and recovery. Innovative technologies supporting circular economy throughout the value chain, from design to decommissioning. Innovative technologies supporting energy efficiency and water efficiency throughout the value chain. Innovative technologies that provide solutions for and mitigate against the impacts of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon capture and storage (CCS). Innovative technologies to support the capture, storage and transportation of energy to the end user. Decarbonisation and modernisation of waterborne transport products, services and fleets. Development of complimentary onshore infrastructure. Development of onshore infrastructure, including requirements for clean energy waterborne transport, production, repairs, and maintenance. Winning SMEs will benefit from exclusive Business Support Services to ease new market access.

EIT Health should show how the KIC could contribute to the outcomes and impacts described in the KIC Strategic Agenda and the KPIs in the EIT Impact Framework following the specific EIT Health’s Impact Pathways, the likely scale and significance of this contribution, and the measures to maximise these impacts in the context of Horizon Europe.

Eligible Activities

KICs will undertake in particular: (a) innovation activities and investments with Union added value; (b) innovation-driven research, experimentation, prototyping and demonstration in areas of key economic, environmental and societal interest and drawing on the results stemming from Union and national research; (c) education and training activities in particular at master's and doctoral level, as well as professional training courses, in areas with the potential to meet future European socio-economic and socioecological needs and which expand the Union’s talent base, promote the development of innovation-related skills; (d) actions as part of the pilot higher education initiative to better integrate HEIs in innovation value chains and ecosystems; (e) outreach activities and the dissemination of best practices in the field of innovation with a focus on the development of cooperation between higher education, research and business, including the service and financial sectors, and, where relevant, public and third sector organisations;(f) RIS activities, fully integrated in the KICs’ multiannual strategy and linked to the relevant smart specialisation strategies; (g) to seek synergies and complementarities between KIC activities and existing Union, national and regional programmes; (h) to mobilise funds from public and private sources; (i) to provide, on request, information on research and innovation outputs and results, and related intellectual rights.

Proposal results are expected to contribute to at least one of the following expected outcomes: Truly mixed human-AI initiatives for human empowerment Trustworthy hybrid decision-support systems

Eligible Activities

Build the next level of perception, visualisation, interaction and collaboration between humans and AI systems working together as partners to achieve common goals, sharing mutual understanding and learning of each other’s abilities and respective roles. Innovative and promising approaches are encouraged, including human-in the loop approaches for truly mixed human-AI initiatives combining the best of human and machine knowledge and capabilities, tacit knowledge extraction (to design the next generation AI-driven co-creation and collaboration tools embodied e.g. in industrial/ working spaces environments). Each proposal will focus on one of the two following research objectives, and clearly identify it: Reach truly mixed human-AI initiatives for human empowerment. The approaches should combine the best of human and machine knowledge and capabilities including shared and sliding autonomy in interaction, addressing reactivity, and fluidity of interaction and making systems transparent, fair and intuitive to use, which will play a key role in acceptance. The systems should adapt to the user rather than the opposite, based on analysis, understanding and anticipation about human behaviour and expectations. Trustworthy hybrid decision-support, including approaches for mixed and sliding decisionmaking, for context interpretation, for dealing with uncertainty, transparent anticipation, reliability, human-centric planning and decision-making, interdependencies, and augmented decision-making. Transparency, fairness, technical accuracy and robustness will be the key, together with validation strategies assessing also the quality of the decision of the AI supported socio-technical system.

Proposals results are expected to contribute to all the following expected outcomes: Scientific progress in AI, addressing major challenges hampering its deployment. Establishing a new pillars of the European AI lighthouse Reinforcing the leading unified European AI community

Eligible Activities

Europe has to scale up existing research capacities and reach a critical mass through tighter networks of European AI excellence centres. The proposals should develop mechanisms to reinforce and network excellence centres in AI, bringing the best scientists from academia and industry to join forces in addressing the major AI challenges hampering its deployment, and to reinforce excellence in AI throughout Europe via a tight network of collaboration. Such networks are expected to mobilise researchers to collaborate on key AI topics and to increase the impact of the funding in progressing faster in joined efforts rather than working in isolation, with fragmented and duplicated efforts. Such networks, together with other mechanisms, will play an important role in reaching critical mass and in overcoming the present fragmentation of AI research in Europe. Proposals will mobilise the best European teams in AI community to join forces to address major technical as well as sector- or societal-driven challenges: strengthening excellence, networking, multidisciplinarity, academia-industry synergies. Activities of the Networks: In order to structure the activities, the proposals will focus on important scientific or technological challenges with industrial and societal relevance where Europe will make a difference, by building on strengths, or strengthening knowledge to fill gaps critical for Europe. Based on the identified challenges, the proposals will develop and implement common research agendas. The main vision and roadmap with targets within the projects, as well as methodology to implement and monitor progress will have to be specified in the proposal and can be further developed during the project. Scientific progress will have to be demonstrated through testing on application specific datasets or use-cases. By extending the benchmarking of foundational research to application specific areas, the research community will simultaneously address advancements in AI and grand societal and technological challenges. The proposals should define mechanisms to foster excellence throughout Europe, to increase efficiency of collaboration, including through networking and exchange programmes, and to develop a vibrant AI network in Europe. Each network will disseminate the latest and most advanced knowledge to all the academic and industrial AI laboratories in Europe and involving them in collaborative projects/exchange programmes. (This could involve projects defined initially or via financial support to third parties, for maximum 20% of the requested EU contribution, with a maximum of 60k€ per third party[2]). Each network will develop, where relevant, interactions with the industry, in view of triggering new scientific questions and fostering take-up of scientific advances Each network will develop collaboration with the relevant Digital innovation Hubs and AI start-up initiatives, to disseminate knowledge and tools, and understand their needs. These networks should also foster innovation and include mechanisms to exploit new ideas coming out of the network’s work (for instance via incubators). Overall, each proposal will define mechanisms to become a virtual centre of excellence, offering access to knowledge and serve as a reference in their chosen specific field, including activities to ensure visibility.

Objective

This call aims at strengthening the capacity of workers' organisations to address, at EU/transnational level, challenges related to changes in employment and work and social dialogue.

Eligible Activities

Actions that address the following themes will be particularly welcome: - modernisation of the labour market, job creation and youth employment, employment in SMEs; - new forms of work and platform work; - quality of work, health and safety at work, anticipation, preparation and management of change and restructuring; the climate neutral and digital transitions; - skills development including re- and upskilling; skills intelligence; - intra-EU labour mobility, migration; - reconciliation of work and family life, gender equality, action in the field of anti-discrimination, active ageing, healthier and longer working lives, active inclusion and decent working conditions, modernisation of social protection systems; - tackling the employment, social and economic consequences of the COVID-19 crisis, and the particular role of workers’ organisations / social partners, in this respect.
