The smart tool for EU proposal drafters and grant writers CallforEurope is a consultancy that provides for professional information and assistance on European Policies, Programmes and Public Calls. Our mission is to support transparent knowledge and easy access to all of the opportunities offered by EU Programmes. We think that giving fresh information on such themes is a valid lever for boosting European Union integration.
Our support is intended to: • offer technical information on how to access to and manage EU grants and projects; • make people find new transnational partnerships throughout Europe; • stimulate public debate on how to access to EU funds. Our ambition is to serve as a technical resource center. We want to serve primarily those that usually work on writing applications and

Hello readers! In the 3rd of July 2022 edition, we gave a look to a long series of new funding calls from European Institutitions and Agencies. The Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) issued six calls for co-funding through grants research and innovation projects in the areas of coal and steel across Europe. The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking funded by Horizon Europe is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). It funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe. Recently the public-private partnership has issued 12 calls for projects developing innovative and sustainable bio-based solutions, with a focus on these strategic priorities: feedstock, processing, products, as well as cross-cutting aspects of communication and environmental sustainability. Under Horizon Europe other 6 new calls have been issued funding on innovative research in the field of medicine and fight to specific deseases. UrbanTech open call is aimed at supporting SMEs and Startups in challenges concerning to Greentech, Health and Smartcities. Have a good read!

In this Interoperable-by-Design Prototypes Open Call, InterConnect is looking for Bottom-up projects that will develop and test novel Interoperable applications or services for smart homes and grids, with a clear societal and economic value, on top of the InterConnect’s Interoperability Framework. These highly innovative projects should aim to build a more comfortable and healthier living space at lower costs and enable their active participation in the energy system and market.
Eligible Activities
Challenge A - Semantic Interoperability for smart homes and buildings: Solutions focused on building semantically interoperable services and ecosystems between different energy and non-energy systems within a building. Challenge B - Interoperable services for Demand Side Flexibility: Solutions focused on demand side flexibility and its cross-domain dimensions. Objective
Planning engines have now reached a maturity that makes them highly useful for realworld applications. Still, their application in practise is sometimes hindered by the fact that the planning world is quite heterogeneous, without a common programming interface that makes the technology easily accessible. Moreover, it can be very hard, even for experts, to reliably predict which technique will work well on a certain problem. Thus, it is important that a user needs not to commit to a certain technique at an early stage of adoption but can at any time easily try out and switch to other, better-suited planning technology. AIPlan4EU aims at solving these problems: it will offer state-of-the-art planning technology through a unified API designed for practitioners and validated on practical use-cases.
Eligible Activities
AIPlan4EU is currently looking for individuals and companies to provide AI Planning use-cases. The AIPlan4EU open calls aim to upgrade third parties’ capacity to leverage AI planning technology in various sectors and offer financial support for European individuals, companies and innovators to experiment in highly innovative, cross-border experiments.

Demonstrate at large scale a new biorefinery concept extracting maximum value from (all components of) the sustainably sourced bio-based feedstock to produce a variety of materials/products in the scope of CBE JU. Set up and operate a biorefinery model that maximises the total value extracted from the input bio-based feedstock, and to minimise the required input (feedstock, energy, other chemicals, other process materials), rather than ‘just’ focusing on a small number of main products, applying efficient use of biomass fractions (including cascading approach to valorise side-streams where applicable). Demonstrate the ‘zero-waste’ ambition by: Reducing any exhaust emissions from the industrial installation. These include exhaust flows that are usually not considered in the common pollution prevention and control operations, such as hot water, vapours, odours, etc. Designing circular processes and looking on the best practices already available or under development, including in other EU R&I programmes. Applying circular by design concepts to output materials/products.

Project results should contribute to the following expected outcomes: Diversified bio-based polymer product portfolio, in terms of polymer types and range of applications under stringent operating conditions. Improved safety, sustainability, and circularity profiles of the end-products that use specialty bio-based polymers for applications under stringent operating conditions. Improved strategic autonomy and lower dependency of the EU on imports of specialty polymers for stringent operating conditions in specific market sectors. Proposals under this topic should: Develop bio-based polymers with tailored functional properties for a pre-defined range of applications for market requirements under stringent conditions. The bio-based polymers should be circular-by-design, allowing for their reuse and recycling, including composting in case of biodegradable biopolymers. Develop validation tests (e.g., test rigs and testing procedures) and test the bio-based polymers against the application requirements. These tests should include their end-of-life handling. Provide an assessment of the environmental sustainability of the developed bio-based polymers. Provision for the project integrating ‘safe-and-sustainable-by-design’ generic criteria and framework considerations[4], in line with the EU Chemicals strategy for sustainability. Apply and/or adapt existing/mature or novel digital technologies provided that they are instrumental to achieving the project’s outcomes and scope. Applications of digital technologies that should be considered in the scope are among the following areas: i) chemicals, materials and process design & modelling ii) process monitoring and optimisation and iii) data analytics and data management of the production of bio-based polymers in the scope.

Through variety of business advisory services, hands on and financial support, the proposal should provide substantial help to Ukrainian companies enhancing their capacity to interact successfully with the European ecosystem actors and take advantage of the European innovation financing instruments. The proposed actions should foster the collaboration between Ukrainian and European tech start-ups and SMEs. . The proposal should particularly focus on strengthening the Ukrainian tech ecosystems and supporting innovative solutions/actions for rebuilding Ukraine.

Proposals should address both the following aspects: 1. Best practices and filling the gaps on insurance coverage for climate adaptation. The proposal should address barriers to the use of insurance for climate adaptation, and improve the insurance cover in regions and communities. 2. Trialing and experimentation of insurance solutions in EU regions and communities. As climate impacts become more severe and frequent European regions and communities need to lead by example by procuring insurance solutions to transfer risks and compensate for loses. The proposal should build on the guidance developed under the first element and start piloting insurance solutions that can increase Europe’s resilience and preparedness to face unavoidable consequences of climate change.

Objective
The topic aims to establish national roundtables to improve dialogue, co-operation and awareness between key public and private stakeholders and build capacity in order to develop large-scale investment programmes that mobilise private finance for investments in energy efficiency and integrated renewables. The Smart Finance for Smart Buildings initiative had proposed a comprehensive approach based on the more effective use of public funds, aggregation and project development assistance, and de-risking. The Commission is organising conferences and national roundtables in EU Member States through the Sustainable Energy Investment Forums[4] initiative since 2016, in order to roll-out this initiative across Europe.
Eligible Activities
Proposals should set-up national roundtables focused on energy efficiency investments and small-scale integrated renewables, as permanent multilateral discussion forums gathering the relevant stakeholders, including, but not limited to government, local and regional authorities, financial sector, Energy Service Companies (ESCOs), homeowners, industry sector, construction sector and Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector, consumers and citizens associations. The focus of the national roundtables should include energy renovation of existing private and/or public buildings, as well as district heating, investments in SMEs and the tertiary sector. Proposals can target regional levels in addition to the national level if relevant.

Objective
Ecodesign and energy labelling for energy-related products enjoy widespread support by suppliers, retailers, consumers and citizens, but non-compliance with the requirements is a significant and growing concern (e.g. over 70% of products failing to meet the information requirements). Lack of awareness, knowledge or detailed understanding of the legislative provisions by economic operators is one of the likely main reasons, rather than bad will. The objective of this action is to increase visibility to operators of (existing) resources available to help them comply through increased outreach and proactive involvement by relevant stakeholders.
Eligible Activities
To address this, the proposed action(s) should establish a facility combining both reactive and proactive assistance to economic operators through targeted and timely information to increase their awareness, knowledge and understanding of the concerned Regulations. The precise nature of the action is very much left up to the project proposals to define, though attention should be also given to reaching small and medium size suppliers and retailers (e.g., those not engaged in trade associations and/or located in remote areas), for example on regulatory changes concerning new or rescaled energy labels. Actions should cover at least the following and have both a reactive and proactive nature:

Objective
to allow alliances of higher education institutions and national authorities to examine, test and facilitate the delivery of a joint European degree label, based on a common set of co-created European criteria. The aim is to encourage, where appropriate, and make it easier for higher education institutions engaged in transnational cooperation, to provide joint programmes and award joint degrees, in accordance with the Bologna instruments, as well as to take further steps to recognise the value of innovative transnational learning experiences and to increase the visibility, attractiveness and reputation, both in Europe and beyond, of joint programmes provided by alliances of European higher education institutions.
Eligible Activities
Exploring and testing the relevance of these criteria for establishing a label which acknowledges the European and transnational experiences in a joint transnational programme leading to a higher education qualification at all levels (European Qualification Frameworks – EQF – (level 6, 7, 8) and the feasibility of their use; Exploring and recommending possible optimisation of the proposed set of criteria in view of maximizing the attractiveness and potential impact of such a joint European degree label; Elaborating proposals, in cooperation with the relevant national, regional and/or institutional authorities, aiming to facilitate the development and implementation of joint degrees in Europe. This would include proposing an approach that could be commonly agreed on for the delivery of joint degrees based on co-created European criteria by European countries at all education levels. These proposals should take into account the existing instruments developed by the Bologna Process, such as e.g. the European approach for quality assurance of joint programmes, and reflect on the potential need for updating these tools. The testing is expected to take place on a significant sample of existing joint programmes implemented by alliances and other consortia of higher education institutions (such as European Universities alliances, Erasmus Mundus consortia, Marie Skłodowska-Curie consortia and other types of transnational cooperation partnerships), in close cooperation with relevant national, regional and/or higher education institutions authorities. Eligible activities are, for example, screening the existing joint programmes for compliance with the criteria, identification of eligible programmes, contribution to the creation of the template of the European joint degree label (physical and/or digital), awarding the first set of joint European degree label to students.
Eligible Applicants
The applicants (beneficiaries and affiliated entities if any) must be higher education institutions holding a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), and/or public or private organisations active in the fields of education and training or in other fields relevant to this policy experimentation call. Only Higher education institutions (HEIs) holding a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) can be coordinators of the project.

Objective
to examine, test and facilitate the use of existing institutionalised cooperation instruments at European level, such as a possible legal status for alliances of higher education institutions - for example ‘European Universities’, with the objective of facilitating deeper, long-term and flexible transnational cooperation. The aim is to give alliances, on a voluntary basis, the latitude to act together, make common strategic decisions, experiment joint recruitment, design joint curricula or pool resources and human, technical, data, education, research and innovation capacities.
Eligible Activities
Exploring at the level of the alliance how an existing institutionalised cooperation EU instrument, such as a possible legal status for alliances of higher education institutions at European level can provide solutions to the obstacles encountered with regard to the deeper cooperation that the alliances are pursuing. The objective is to test the implementation of existing EU instruments - such as the European grouping of territorial cooperation (EGTC) or the European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG) - based on a needs assessment of the alliance and taking into account where relevant the regulatory regional/national frameworks to which the individual higher education institutions part of the alliance need to adhere to; Where appropriate, elaborating a proposal for improvement of the existing institutionalised cooperation EU instruments or key elements for the design of a new EU level instrument.
Beneficiaries will analyse and explore how the existing institutionalised cooperation instruments available at European level can provide solutions to the obstacles encountered with regard to the deeper cooperation that the alliances are pursuing, based on a needs assessment of the alliance. It is highly recommended that this analysis is done in close cooperation with the public authorities at local, regional, and/or national level involved in the setting up of the institutionalised cooperation instruments at European level. The applicants (beneficiaries and affiliated entities if any) must be higher education institutions holding a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), and/or public or private organisations active in the fields of education and training or in other fields relevant to this policy experimentation call.
