Hello readers! In the 10th of July 2022 edition, we gave a look to a long series of new funding calls from European Institutitions and Agencies. The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking funded by Horizon Europe is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). It funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe. Recently the public-private partnership has issued 12 calls for projects developing innovative and sustainable bio-based solutions, with a focus on these strategic priorities: feedstock, processing, products, as well as cross-cutting aspects of communication and environmental sustainability. Under Erasmus+ programme 3 awards are expected to be assigned for giving visibility to Sport Projects that promote social inclusion, gender-equality, peace and tolerance values. NGI Assure is looking for building blocks that contribute to providing such assurances include (but are not limited to) quantum-proof cryptography, public key infrastructure, (augmented) authenticated key exchange, ratchet mechanisms (such as the Noise protocol) that securely chain key material, distributed hash tables and DAGs to make P2P interaction more secure, conflict-free replicated data types, mixnets and onion routing mechanisms, consensus protocols, distributed ledgers and (post) blockchain technologies that create redundant data sets managed independently by mutually distrustful parties, a priori usage control, symbolic and formal proofs, and tamperproof open hardware implementations of core cryptographic primitives. The work needs to become available under free and open source licenses. We are looking for deep tech components; the outcomes of NGI Assure shall contribute towards identifying and solving current issues, but do not need to provide a complete solution by themselves (although they may).

Objective

Adoption and efficacy of primary cancer prevention programmes in real-life has been insufficient, due to factors related to local context, such as organisation and digitalisation of healthcare services, resources, cultural, and geographical situation. To appropriately adapt interventions and scale-up to different geographical, economic and cultural settings, proposals should aim at delivering results through implementation research[3], which are directed, tailored towards and contributing to all of the following expected outcomes: Citizens will benefit from the outcomes of evidence-based, tailored and affordable primary prevention programmes targeting known cancer risk factors and health determinants, including behavioural factors, that are tailored to the specific needs of local communities and effectively adopted; Healthcare professionals and patient organisations will be able to provide evidence-based information targeted at individuals and families on cancer prevention, including through vaccination, improved health literacy, issuing of better guidelines and counselling; Regional and national policymakers and authorities will engage in implementing and scaling-up the most suitable prevention programmes, including possible legislative policies.

Eligible Activities

Proposals should address all of the following: Focus on implementation and upscaling of evidence-based primary cancer prevention interventions, at local, regional or national level, addressing known risk or protective factors and determinants[4]. Proposals should clearly justify and describe the existing evidence supporting the chosen intervention, including evidence of cost-effectiveness and affordability, across health or other sectors. As effective prevention includes behavioural change, due consideration should be given to the factors that facilitate or impede behavioural change. Identify and address the bottlenecks and barriers that might influence uptake and implementation of cancer prevention programmes in accessible, affordable and equitable ways, and their impact in a defined public health context. Provide evidence and recommendations to inform policy and decision-makers and propose a pathway to integrate the intervention into local, regional or national health systems, policies and practices.

Fellowships should be provided to excellent researchers[1], undertaking cross-border mobility either to or between EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries. Applications are expected to be made jointly by the researcher together with a beneficiary in the academic or non-academic sector located in a Widening Country. ERA Fellowships should take place in a Widening Country. Fellowships are open to researchers of any nationality who wish to engage in R&I projects by either coming to Europe from any country in the world or moving within Europe to a Widening Country.

Projects are expected to contribute to all of the following outcomes: Better access to, and transformation of, the already openly available climate data in the C3S Climate Data Store[1], Climate ADAPT and relevant Horizon 2020 projects or other initiatives (such as GEOSS[2]) into user-relevant climate change services, in combination with locally sourced data and information, where available. Long-term safeguarding of developed solutions by integration in the operational infrastructure and services of the Climate Data Store should also be explored. Beyond-state-of-the-art relevant information (including climate, socio-economic, demographic information) services and tools tailored to Mission users’ needs (decision makers, local and regional authorities and other end users), with customizable datamanipulation tools available for use and re-use. Quality-controlled climate data services that the Mission could build upon, supported and maintained as customizable, user-oriented components of operationally supported EU services (such as the C3S). Projects might want to refer to, and follow guidance, from the project under the topic on “Supporting and standardising climate services”[3]. Tested FAIR data governance and management mechanisms that enable the sharing, community validation and use of locally sourced data (e.g. citizen-generated data) and information, in combination with authoritative data and information as part of the European Green Deal Data Space. Demonstrated application in at least 5 EU regions or communities

EIC Transition aims at maturing both your technology and business idea thus increasing its technology and market readiness. Proposals submitted to this Challenge call should focus on the following specific objectives: further develop energy technologies, including renewable fuels enabling the decarbonisation of energy sector and facilitate the selection of different and appropriate applications and use cases, and integration of these sustainable technologies into existing and new energy systems and devices, both at component, process or at infrastructure level

Eligible Activities

This EIC Transition Challenge aims at maturing the proposed energy technology through its integration in a fully functioning energy system and the emerging of the ecosystem actors and value chain needed for the market uptake of the technology. The expected outcomes of your proposal are: an energy generation/recovery/storage technology that can positively demonstrate a clearly defined use case, with clear indication and quantitative measurement of the investment costs, efficiency, dynamic performance, durability and sustainability versus established alternative technologies, and integration of the proposed technology at system/process level (both as component of a device or as part of existing system infrastructure); a credible business model for the deployment and use of the energy system in the relevant environment; an exploitation strategy including the formal IP protection of the novel results integrated in the energy system.

A single legal entity established in a Member State or an Associated Country (‘monobeneficiary’) if you are an SME or a research performing organisation (university, research or technology organisation, including teams, individual Principle Investigators and inventors in such institutions who intend to form a spinout company). Objective

Successful proposals will support researchers and innovators to upgrade technological solutions for biogenic gaseous carbon capture and use (CCU[1]) and the production of sustainable circular non-fossil-based products, in line with the objectives of the European Climate Law and with the initiatives outlined in the ‘Sustainable Carbon Cycles’ Communication from the European Commission[2]. The successful proposals will contribute to mitigating climate change along the bio-based industrial systems.

Eligible Activities

The European Union has established the European Climate Law, having as objectives to become climate resilient and economy-wide climate neutrality by 2050, with the aim to achieve negative emissions thereafter. To achieve these objectives, the circular economy and the sustainable bioeconomy sectors need to promote technological solutions for carbon capture and use (CCU) and the production of sustainable renewable-carbonbased products. Proposals under this topic should: Develop new or improve existing innovative CCU processing and conversion of circular gaseous carbon emitted from bio-based industry. These conversion steps can include, e.g., intensified use of industrial (bio)technologies tailored to the composition and characteristics of the exhaust emissions from existing and emerging processing of bio-based feedstock. Provision for the project integrating ‘safeand-sustainable-by-design’ generic criteria and framework considerations[5], in line with the EU Chemicals strategy for sustainability. Improve the efficiency and circularity of the bio-based industry to minimise process losses.

Through the development of new jobs and growth, diversification, and revitalisation of the economy in rural areas, ensure fair benefit distribution among all actors involved, with a focus on the primary sector.

Eligible Activities

The sustainable mobilisation and valorisation of secondary resources can result in the creation of new economic and social opportunities in rural areas, while also protecting the environment and climate. Implementing these new opportunities needs the establishment of new bio-based systems, new business models and interactions between primary producers and other actors all the way to consumers, as well as ensuring circularity. However, individual farmers usually do not have the financial and technical capacity to invest in the necessary infrastructure or to provide a sufficient quantity and quality of these biological resources to make innovative valorisations economically viable. Farmers’ cooperatives and producer organisations play an important role in helping farmers to capture a higher share of the value added in the supply chain, to strengthen their position on the market as well as in the areas of R&I, capacity building, and knowledge transfer. This topic addresses cooperative business models among primary producers for the efficient conversion of agricultural residues, by-products, and waste into high-value bio-based materials and products with improved sustainability characteristics. Proposals under this topic should: Demonstrate the potential of contractual agreements or fully developed shareholder/ownership concepts (e.g., cooperatives or producer organisations) to optimise harvesting, logistics and processing of secondary bio-based feedstock at relevant scales

Objective

The topic aims to establish national roundtables to improve dialogue, co-operation and awareness between key public and private stakeholders and build capacity in order to develop large-scale investment programmes that mobilise private finance for investments in energy efficiency and integrated renewables. The Smart Finance for Smart Buildings initiative had proposed a comprehensive approach based on the more effective use of public funds, aggregation and project development assistance, and de-risking. The Commission is organising conferences and national roundtables in EU Member States through the Sustainable Energy Investment Forums[4] initiative since 2016, in order to roll-out this initiative across Europe.

Eligible Activities

Proposals should set-up national roundtables focused on energy efficiency investments and small-scale integrated renewables, as permanent multilateral discussion forums gathering the relevant stakeholders, including, but not limited to government, local and regional authorities, financial sector, Energy Service Companies (ESCOs), homeowners, industry sector, construction sector and Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector, consumers and citizens associations. The focus of the national roundtables should include energy renovation of existing private and/or public buildings, as well as district heating, investments in SMEs and the tertiary sector. Proposals can target regional levels in addition to the national level if relevant.

Ecodesign and energy labelling for energy-related products enjoy widespread support by suppliers, retailers, consumers and citizens, but non-compliance with the requirements is a significant and growing concern (e.g. over 70% of products failing to meet the information requirements). Lack of awareness, knowledge or detailed understanding of the legislative provisions by economic operators is one of the likely main reasons, rather than bad will. The objective of this action is to increase visibility to operators of (existing) resources available to help them comply through increased outreach and proactive involvement by relevant stakeholders.

Eligible Activities

To address this, the proposed action(s) should establish a facility combining both reactive and proactive assistance to economic operators through targeted and timely information to increase their awareness, knowledge and understanding of the concerned Regulations. The precise nature of the action is very much left up to the project proposals to define, though attention should be also given to reaching small and medium size suppliers and retailers (e.g., those not engaged in trade associations and/or located in remote areas), for example on regulatory changes concerning new or rescaled energy labels. The global objective of this call for proposals is to strengthen the sustainable development of rural areas in North Macedonia. The specific objective of this call for proposals is to modernise and optimise farming and forestry through provision of support to modernisation and innovative management in agricultural sector

Eligible Activities

- Technical assistance and training; - Development of IT systems and digital platforms - Organisation and or participation Workshops, conferences, seminars; - Studies, analysis, surveys; - Activities promoting of co-operation between farmers - Pilot projects, partial roll-outs, and their evaluation - Capacity building, training and coaching of staff for the purpose of sustainability of the action

Eligible Applicants

be a legal person and  be non-profit-making and  be a specific type of organisation such as non-governmental organisations , and  be established in the Republic of North Macedonia at least two years before the submission deadline for this call
