I would like to give you a short overview about available locking solutions and their capability to match or not to match the requirements of modern locking solutions.
4% Citrate, Heparin and Saline - in my view such locking solutions alone are not the best option because of lack of antimicrobial effectiveness! (Weijmer 2002, ERBP 2010, McRae 2008, Grudzinski 2007)
30% und 46,7% Citrate These lock solutions are not favorable either because of several cardiac and embolic risks for the patient. In addition the patency of the catheter may suffer and therefore the need of Urokinase or Actilyse is raised. Which means the choice is even expensive. (FDA 2000, Punt 2008, Willicombe 2010, Schilcher 2012, Power 2008, Correa Barcellos 2017)
Antibiotics as a compound in lock solutions is not indicated at all due to known resistancy development. (UK Renal Guideline, Dt. Dialysestandard, Landry 2010, Bueloni 2019)
What is left? TauroLock™? In a recently performed study it was shown that TauroLock™ can reduce the rate of catheter related blood stream infections to 0,08 per 1000 catheter days. Another publication showed that the use of TauroLock™ reduced the costs related to catheters by 43% compared to 4% Citrate. (Al Ali 2017, Winnicki 2018)
TauroLock™ lock solutions are combination products which fulfill all requirements of modern lock solutions: - for effective infection prevention TauroLock™ contains taurolidine - TauroLock™ is safe because taurolidine is quickly metabolized to naturally occuring amino acid in the body - Keeping up the patency is achieved with the use of 4% Citrate and Heparin or Urokinase
