Warped Tour Background
In 1995, punk rock gained a widespread stage through Van’s Warped Tour. The tour quickly became the largest traveling music festival in the United States with around 700,000 attendees each year. 23 years of the festival brought excellent opportunities to artists and fans alike. Small and big artists were given a platform to showcase their music. Fans were given a safe space to appreciate the art and form a community with other fans with the same interests.
The Warped Tour was founded by the successful promoter Kevin Lyman. He was going to announce the first tour to be called “The Bomb” because at the time it was a term that meant, something cool. On the day he was going to release the announcement the Oklahoma City bombing shocked the U.S. Since he thought the name would be too disrespectful and harsh, he used the name “Warped”, which was from a magazine he used to work for.
Van’s was not the original sponsor that Warped Tour had in mind. Kevin and his team were scheduled to meet with Calvin Klein to discuss sponsoring the summer festival. A snowstorm was the reason behind their meeting having to get postponed. Furthermore, Lyman received a phone call from Van’s, and it went off from there. It was a perfect fit since Van’s had a huge relationship with extreme sports such as skateboarding, and BMXing. These sports most of the time went hand in hand with punk rock music, so it was a perfect fit to sponsor this festival.
First Warped Tour

At the first Warped Tour, there were only about 20 bands, 9 pro-skateboarders and BMX-ers Most of these bands were from the California or New York hardcore scene. There were no real headliners to speak of. No Doubt & Sublime are considered two of the best acts, however in 1995 they had yet to gain their notoriety.

Warped Tour Marketing & Consumerism Giant
When you think about the Warped Tour, you generally think of a giant festival for punk rock, ska, skateboarding and BMX bikers. Over its 25 years it became a contradiction of itself and became a marketing and consumerism driven event. However, without that it most likely wouldn’t have been as popular as it was. Originally it was something for the punk at heart, not a large event, no headliners and affordable. The festival got a corporation to back them with a $300,000 check in 1996. That company was Vans shoes. By 1999, Vans had a 15% stake in the festival and was putting $1 million/year. By 2001, Vans had a 70% controlling interest and putting $5.2 million/year. In the first few years, creator Kevin Lyman still had to find $4 million/year in sponsorships and found a permanent one in 1999 with the surf label Hurley, with Blink-182 wearing Hurley gear for free transportation on that year’s Warped Tour. In 2003, Monster Energy joined the sponsors team, and this was well before Coca-Cola bought them.
“The Warped Tour is really interesting because it jumped early on the idea that crowds could be commodified. They were able to widen out the notion of the festival as a marketplace –not so much of ideas, but a marketplace of actual things.” –Gina Arnold author of Half a Million Strong: Crowds and Power from Woodstock to Coachella

Warped Tour 1995 tickets started at $25 Warped Tour 2019 • Cleveland General Admission: $35 • Atlantic City Pre-Sale 2 Day Passes: $99.50 - $199.50
• • California Pre-Sale 2 Day Passes: $99.00 - $120.00 The one-day Cleveland pass hadn’t changed much, but you can see the drastic difference for the other two final locations.
Without the sponsorships and backing from corporate America though, the fabulously famous Vans Warped Tour would never have lasted as long as it did.
