GOOD NEWS FOR CAL-BREDS

f you’re looking for the half-empty side of California racing, stop reading now. However, if your glass is half full, there were enough positive developments in 2025 to create upbeat momentum that is rolling into 2026. Te expanded condition allowance for California-breds that went into efect as Santa Anita opened its winter meeting in late December (more on that later) is just the latest in a series of good-news headlines for California horsemen and women in general, and Cal-breds in particular. Let’s review: In January, the CTBA winter mixed sale posted hefty increases in average and median sale price from the previous year, fueled by lucrative purchases out of the Valpredo Family Trust dispersal, Checkmate Toroughbreds consignor. Te $170,000 sale topper was Shocking Grey, who only days earlier won the $125,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. In February, Santa Anita signaled good things to come by reversing prize-money declines necessary to overcome purse overpayments. Track ofcials said they were able to raise overnight purses by as much as 10% because key business metrics were on the rise. It was the frst of several purse increases, as it turned out, as Del Mar followed suit with a purse boost of its own a day later. In March, the wildly popular Te Chosen Vron became the 10th back-to-back winner of Cal-bred Horse of the Year and picked up hardware for champion older male and sprinter. A week later, Santa Anita and Del Mar announced further overnight purse increases that sent some maiden special weight races into six fgures. Los Alamitos joined in with added purse money as well.

In July, longshot 7-year-old gelding Lovesick Blues captured Del Mar’s grade I Bing Crosby Stakes, a “Win & You’re In” qualifer for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, giving stalwart California stallion Grazen and trainer Librado Barocio their frst grade I winners. In August, the CTBA announced a trio of groundbreaking incentives: the Flagship Foal Incentive Program, which awards breeders $1,000 per registered Cal-bred foal up to 25; the Waiving of Registration Fees for registered Cal-bred foals born in 2025, 2026, and 2027; and a pilot program for broodmare enhancement that will reimburse CTBA member breeders up to $3,000 in transportation costs for up to fve in-foal mares purchased at out-of-state public auctions for $20,000 or more who are 12 years old or younger that must be bred back to California stallions. Combined, the incentives are designed to increase and upgrade the annual crop of Cal-breds, which are vital to the health of racing in the state. In September, a Cal-bred flly from the frst crop of Corniche sold for $250,000 to Legacy Ranch to top the Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale. Barton Toroughbreds, breeder and agent, consigned the daughter out of the winning North Light mare Carmelita. Te chestnut flly is a half-sister to three winners, including multiple stakes winner Carmelita’s Man (by Mucho Macho Man) and multiple stakes-placed Buyback (also by Mucho Macho Man). Also in September, the CTBA announced an early Christmas gift, a boost to the Cal-bred maiden bonus, beginning with the start of the Santa Anita classic meet. Maiden special weight races in restricted and open company run at Santa Anita receive a $2,500 increase in the maiden bonus award from

$10,000 to $12,500, and the same category of race will see a $2,500 increase from $12,500 to $15,000 during Del Mar’s summer meeting. Te popular program has been in place since 2009, and the bonus is ofered in races run at 41∕2 furlongs or longer. In November, Streak of Luck, the Calbred dam of unbeaten Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) champion Ted Nofey, sold for a staggering sale-topping $6.2 million to Amo Racing at Fasig-Tipton. Streak of Luck, a daughter of Old Fashioned, was bred by the Roncelli Family Trust and was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, for longtime client Marie Jones, who bred Ted Nofey. Te 10-year-old mare was sold in foal to Taylor Made Stallions’ leading sire Not Tis Time. Also in November, and here we go again: Another overnight purse boost of 5% announced by Santa Anita, raising maiden special weight races to $70,000. As mentioned above, in December the Cal-bred allowance condition was expanded. Under the previous policy, Cal-breds were entitled to two wins in the frst-level allowance if the wins were recorded on diferent surfaces (dirt or turf). Te new enhancement bolsters this program by permitting two wins on the same surface at two separate distance categories: one win at seven furlongs or less (short) and the other at one mile or longer (long). Te agreement to expand the available options is on a one-year trial basis for 2026, with the understanding that the cap of a maximum of two wins within the condition is unchanged. Stay tuned for more good news, as January will feature California Cup on the 17th at Santa Anita, with nearly $1 million in purses available to Cal-breds, and the CTBA winter mixed sale on the 20th at Fairplex.

NewsBits CAL-BRED EARNS DERBY POINTS hen California-bred Express Kid scored a 34-1 upset win in the $300,000 Remington Springboard Mile Dec. 20, he also earned 10 qualifying points toward a berth in the 2026 Kentucky Derby (G1). Breaking from the outside post, Express Kid went right to the front for jockey Jose Alvarez in the one-mile Remington Park listed stakes. He set all the fractions, beginning with :23.54 for a quarter-mile and :47.58 for a halfmile. He drew of turning for home and scored by 61⁄4 lengths in 1:38.99 over odds-on favorite Arctic Beast, with Royalamerican third. Wade Rarick trains Express Kid for owner Steve Haahr, who bought him for $2,000 at the 2024 Arizona Toroughbred Breeders’ Association fall mixed sale. Richard Barton Enterprises bred the 2023 son of Bodexpress—Sensationalize, by Street Sense. Express Kid made his racing debut at Canterbury Park, winning a maiden race by a neck. Santa Anita Expands Cal-bred Opportunities H orses that win a California-bred frst-level allowance race will have expanded opportunities beginning with the classic meet at Santa Anita. Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association, Toroughbred Owners of California, Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Los Alamitos have reached an agreement to broaden the available options to include two wins over the same surface in Cal-bred frst-conditioned allowance races. Previously, Cal-breds were entitled to two wins in the frst-level allowance if the wins were recorded on diferent surfaces. Te increase in the owner bonus from $10,000 to $12,500 in Calbred maiden special weight races run at Santa Anita also begins with immediate efect on Dec. 26.” CTBA President Doug Burge applauded the new policy, saying, “It is a great addition to the $30 million Cal-bred racing and incentive program that now ofers even more opportunities to California-breds, which currently make up roughly 50% of our feld sizes. Trough the support of TOC and the racing associations, we continue to reward those breeding and racing in the state. If you race in California, it now pays more than ever to have Cal-breds in your barn.”

CAL-BREDS WILL SHINE AT CALIFORNIA CUP DAY California-breds and California-sired horses will take the spotlight at Santa Anita Saturday, Jan. 17, for California Cup. Te day’s card will include fve stakes for Cal-breds and Cal-sired horses, highlighted by the $175,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic presented by City National Bank. Te 11⁄8-mile event on the turf is for 4-year-olds and up. Te other stakes are the $175,000 California 16 miles on the Chrome Cal Cup Derby at 11⁄16 dirt, the $175,000 Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks at a mile on the turf, the $125,000 Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint at 6 furlongs on the dirt, and the $125,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint at about 61⁄2 furlongs on the turf.

Te California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) announced the recipients of the 2025 Howard “Howie” Zucker Grant Program, named in honor of its late past president and devoted board member, Howard Zucker. CARMA awarded $515,000 to 22 aftercare charity partners across the country. “We’re seeing a real shift among new owners,” said CARMA President Billy Koch. “Responsible aftercare is now one of the frst things they ask about, and that simply wasn’t the case in years past. It’s a clear sign that our advocacy is making an impact and that responsible aftercare is becoming part of the conversation from day one.” Many of the grant recipients are located in California. Te entire list of recipients includes: After the Homestretch Arizona, CANTER California, Canter Haven Farm, Center for Racehorse Retraining, Champions Retreat, Desert Oasis Rescue, Down Te Stretch Ranch, Eclipse TB Aftercare, Glen Ellen Vocational Academy, Harmony and Hope Horse Haven, Healing Arenas, Hope For Horses, Horse Power Sanctuaries, Old Friends, Racehorse Remember Me Foundation, Ride Above Disability Terapeutic Riding Center, Sandia Creek Ranch Auxiliary Foundation, Square Peg Foundation, United Pegasus Foundation, Whispering Meadows Ranch Equine Rescue, Win Place Home, Zen Heart Horsemanship, and Let’s Ride Terapeutic Equestrian Program.

CALIFORNIA STAKES DOWNGRADED California continued to lose graded status for more of its stakes races when the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association announced its annual listing of U.S. graded and listed stakes races. Without gaming to supplement purses, California’s purses in many cases are well below stakes in other states for the same divisions. The Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita for turf runners was downgraded from a grade 1 to grade 2 for 2026. Two other Santa Anita stakes, the Joe Hernandez Stakes and Santa Maria Stakes, were moved from grade 2 to grade 3. Moved from grade 3 to listed status were the Honeymoon Stakes, Las Virgenes Stakes, and Palos Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita and the Red Carpet Stakes at Del Mar. In addition, the Lazaro Barrera Stakes at Santa Anita will go from listed to non-listed stakes status. Del Mar did see two of its races upgraded. The Green Flash Handicap was raised to a grade 2, and the Tranquility Lake Stakes was upgraded to listed-restricted status. Kentucky tracks, which have been able to increase purses substantially in recent years, will have 20 races raised in status for 2026. Only two Kentucky races received a downgrade. The committee reviewed 942 U.S. stakes races with a purse of at least $75,000, and assigned graded status to 410 of them, fve fewer than were graded in 2025, and listed status to 211 races. Eleven graded races were upgraded; one new grade 1 and 10 new grade 2 races were named; four new grade 3 races were identifed. Nine new listed races and one new listed-restricted race were upgraded from non-listed black-type status. Thirteen graded races were downgraded; two grade 1, fve grade 2, and six grade 3 races were demoted. Six listed races were downgraded to non-listed black-type status.

CARMA Announces Zucker Grants

10 YEARS AGO The longest shot of the feld at 64-1, California-bred LOST BUS won the $201,000 Santa Monica Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Jan. 23, 2016. With Fernando Perez riding for trainer Gary Sherlock, Lost Bus battled with Finest City and Tara’s Tango for nearly the entire seven furlongs, edging Finest City by a head, with Tara’s Tango another neck back at the wire. Lost Bus stopped the timer in 1:21.78. Sherlock trained Lost Bus for owner Terry Lovingier, who had claimed the flly for $32,000 three starts prior. John Haagsma and Wesley Ward bred the daughter of Bring the Heat— Frysland, by Stravinsky. Lost Bus went on to add the Spring Fever Stakes later that season and earn a total of $412,818. Lost Bus’ foals include Lovingier-bred Bus Buzz, winner of the 2023 Real Good Deal Stakes and a son of leading California sire Stay Thirsty.

25 YEARS AGO MEN’S EXCLUSIVE was a durable California-bred, starting 48 times over 10 seasons to age 11. He began his 8-year-old season Jan. 28, 2001, in the $200,000 Palos Verdes Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita. Facing another venerable Cal-bred, Big Jag, Men’s Exclusive defeated that rival by three-quarters of a length in 1:08.33 for six furlongs. Lafft Pincay Jr. rode Men’s Exclusive for owner/breeder Hartsel E. Reed and trainer Wesley Ward. Men’s

Exclusive won his frst stakes in 1997 when he captured the Los Angeles Handicap (G3) at Hollywood Park. He also took the 1997 California Sprint Championship at Bay Meadows and 2000 Bull Dog Stakes at Fresno. Men’s Exclusive later in 2001 added the Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (G3) for the second consecutive time and ultimately earned a total of $1,451,126. Reed bred the son of Exclusive Ribot from his unraced homebred Meneval mare Men’s Number.

50 YEARS AGO California-bred MESSENGER OF SONG scored a nose victory over Avatar, the previous year’s winner of the Belmont Stakes (G1), in the San Fernando Stakes at Santa Anita Jan. 25, 1976. It was a stellar feld that included Cal-bred graded winner Larrikin and multiple graded winners Forceten, George Navonod, and Diabolo. Jerry Lambert piloted Messenger of Song for trainer Gordon Campbell. Messenger of Song completed the 11⁄8 miles of the San Fernando in 1:481⁄5. It was the ffth added-money win for the colt, who the previous season had been voted champion Cal-bred 3-year-old male and would earn a career-total of $225,175. B.J. Ridder bred and owned Messenger of Song, a son of Envoy—Philomela, by Tudor Minstrel. Philomela went on to become the second dam of Ridder-bred Cal-bred champion Flying Paster.

California Legislature Honors Mario Gutierrez

GOT CHROME?

Two days after California-bred California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), another Derby winner, jockey Mario Gutierrez, was honored in Sacramento. Te Latino Spirit Awards, established in 2002, are held in conjunction with Cinco de Mayo. Gutierrez, who piloted I’ll Have Another to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby, was one of 10 honored this year by the California Senate and Assembly. California Gov. Jerry Brown attended the dinner held the night before in conjunction with the awards. Te timing couldn’t have been better, as many wanted to talk about the state’s own California Chrome. Tis is the frst time that the Latino Spirit Awards have honored a racing fgure. Gutierrez’s photo will hang in the Capitol Rotunda for a month along with the other honorees. Gutierrez was born in Mexico and initially began his riding career CHRB monthly in his native country. He later was a huge success at Hastingsmeeting Racecourse in Canada before switching his tack to Southern California. CCAP Paul Reddam, owner of I’ll Have Another, noticed the youngster’s Hearing Room Sacramento ability and suggested him to trainer Doug O’Neill for I’ll Have Another in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita. Gutierrez never lost on the colt in four starts—the Lewis, Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

THURSDAY

In the run-up to California Chrome’s successful victory in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association spread the word via a colorful button. With a tagline: “Got Chrome? California does! It pays to be Cal-bred” the CTBA promoted California Chrome and the California breeding industry. People who “liked” the CTBA’s Facebook page received one of the buttons, as did some lucky fans who focked to California Chrome’s fnal work at Los Alamitos April 26. Then it was off to Kentucky, where CTBA’s Doug Burge and several board members also passed out buttons on the famed Churchill Downs backstretch. The buttons proved so popular that they also passed them out at Pimlico before the Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

Ready for Action CAL-BRED JUVENILES DOMINATE SALE CATALOG

he late John Harris and Don Valpredo together bred and raced a plethora of top California-breds, and horses from those programs annually play an important role in the California Toroughbred Breeders Association January mixed sale. In 2025, Shocking Grey from the Valpredo dispersal topped the sale at $170,000 just days after winning the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint Stakes. She graces the 2026 cover of a catalog that includes a consignment from Harris Farms, long a leading consignor at California sales. Te sale will be held Jan. 20 at Fairplex Park in Pomona While the stallions that stood at Harris have since been relocated for 2026, the Harris consignment consists of many ofspring of those sires, including champion Acclamation. Tree newly turned 2-year-olds by Acclamation are on ofer, including Hip 6, a colt out of the stakes-placed Giant’s Causeway mare Anura. Tat mare has already produced stakes winners Luck of the Kitten (who also ran second in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile TurfG1T) and Empire Builder. Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch always brings a big consignment to the mixed sale, and this year is no exception. Te group consists primarily of 2-year-olds, many by leading California stallion Stay Tirsty, who stands at Lovacres. Lovingier noted that the 2-year-olds have 60 days of galloping under them. “Trainers can buy these horses and

take them right to the track,” Lovingier said. Lovacres’ horses typically perform well from the start of 2-year-old races at Santa Anita in the spring. Tapatia Mia and Cara Rose, both bred by Lovingier,

fnished one-two in the frst 2-year-old race at Santa Anita in 2025, a 41⁄2-furlong race May 2. Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency is another regular consignor to the winter sale. He will bring several as agent for Liberty Road Stables, including three by Surf Cat and one each by Danzing Candy, Mo Forza, and Sir Prancealot. Other Havens’ oferings include Quintessa, a 2-year-old flly cataloged as Hip 64. Quintessa is from the frst crop of Visitant, who stands at the Wil-

liamson family’s Arroyo Vista Farm. She is out of Foxysox, a multiple graded winner raced in California by the late Warren Williamson and trained by Carla Gaines. Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate Toroughbreds has a consignment that includes 2-year-olds, yearlings, and broodmares. Two of the 2-year-olds come from the frst crop of California stallion Eight Rings, including Hip 149. Tat colt is out of the stakes-winning Cal-bred Grazen mare September Secret. Rancho San Miguel will also bring a large group to the sale. Several 2-year-olds are from the second crop of Mo Forza, who stands at the ranch. In one instance, Rancho San Miguel will ofer yearling and 2-year-old full brothers—Hips 47 and 48. Tey are by Mo Forza out of the stakes-placed Sharp Humor mare Del Mar Holiday. Barton Toroughbreds, the leading California breeder the past two seasons and on track to make it three years in a row, brings a consignment of broodmares to the sale. Tey are by some of the leading sires nationally, including Tapit, Candy Ride, and Malibu Moon. Linda Madsen’s Milky Way Farm consignment consists of 2-year-olds, yearlings, and broodmares. Many are by the farm’s stallions, including Midnight Storm, Tizamagician, Graydar, Dosifcado, and Passion for Gold. Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm ofers broodmares, yearlings, and 2-year-olds, as well as several older horses of racing age. Optimism Permeates Open House

Te free event marked the San Luis Obispo County farm’s fourth time within the past three years it opened its gates to Toroughbred breeders, owners, and enthusiasts.

Terminals in 2024, ending a career of nearly 60 years. Te Los Angeles native had served as SSA Terminals’ president of domestic container operations, its largest division, and chief operating oﬃcer. Along the way, the soft-spoken DeNike, 79, developed a love of racing horses, frst Quarter Horses and later Toroughbreds, both as an owner and small-scale breeder. Racing Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos and Toroughbreds in Northern California was a treasured pastime for

decades that ended with the closure of Golden Gate Fields in 2024. “I was really disappointed with the Bay Meadows closing and then Golden Gate Fields,” DeNike said. “With the horses we were running, we were doing really well. We won a few stakes and lots of other races. “Te types of horses we had—we could compete in stakes and allowance races in Northern California, but not in Southern California.” His career path started as a student at Los Angeles Harbor College when he got a job at the nearby port. He never returned to college. “I fell in love with the waterfront, and it’s why I stayed there as long as I did,” DeNike said. In the early 1980s, he transferred to San Francisco, where he ran operations management. “I had a house in San Mateo, and I was working almost all of the time,” he explained. “Te only free time I had was on Saturday nights, and I started going to the Quarter Horse races at Bay Meadows. It became a regular thing. I really enjoyed Quarter Horse racing, and I bought my frst horse in 1983.” A few years later, he moved on to SSA Terminals. Tanks to his promotion, he purchased a 15-acre horse farm in Kent, Wash., a short drive from Emerald Downs. DeNike’s involvement in racing began as it often does, with claiming horses. His frst big successes came in Quarter Horse competition, where he and his wife and racing partner, Teresa, have had three

grade 1 winners and fve graded stakes winners overall. Te frst came with a Washington homebred mare named Kaniska, winner of the La Primera Del Ano Derby (G1) at Los Alamitos in 2006. Tey also won the PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Los Al in 2007 with a homebred gelding, Ancient Ruler, and in 2009 with the multiple graded stakes-winning flly Jumpn Beduino. DeNike gives a great deal of credit to Teresa for their success in racing. “She’s a really, really good horsewoman,” he said. “She has a trainer’s license in Washington and is very involved in the veterinary part. She knows horses as well as I do. She knew nothing about horses before she met me. Like me, she ended up loving the business.” Tere have been no graded stakes wins for DeNike in Toroughbred racing, but his horses have captured several stakes over the years in Northern California. Since 2000, the DeNikes have earned nearly $4.7 million in Toroughbred races, according to Equibase. But he ran just fve horses in 2025, winning once in 16 starts. DeNike said it was the “worst year we ever had” as he tries to ft into Southern California racing. He said he has considered moving his horses out of California for an easier circuit but doesn’t feel comfortable about racing in jurisdictions he’s not familiar with. He’s also considered getting out of racing and breeding horses only for sale. He is also concerned about taxes. “In order to claim a business, you have to prove it is a business,” DeNike said. “It can’t all be losses.” Tey have not been as active in breeding Toroughbreds as they have been with Quarter Horses, but their recently retired Kentucky homebred Il Bellator, a son of Shackleford out of their Grand Slam mare Kaili, won the listed 2022 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields. fall with earnings of $329,650. He is currently being trained for a second career in three-day eventing in Kentucky, DeNike said. DeNike has fve broodmares he keeps at a farm in Kentucky. Tis year, he said, “Te plan is to bring three broodmares to California to foal here and then re-breed them to California sires, which would make them all Cal-breds.” He said his best horse was a statebred named Control Seeker, a durable graded stakes-placed winner of 10 races, earning $377,838. Racing mostly in Northern California, the gelded son of Sought After debuted in 2008 and retired in 2014 after 43 starts. “A friend of mine was trying to prove the stallion by getting winners at the track,” DeNike said. “I purchased several of them, and they all did pretty well. Tey won two stakes on the card with You’re My Boy Blue and Frisco Fox and were third in two others with Bartok’s Bling and Stormy Surge. “Te claiming crown races—defnitely one of our best days,” DeNike said. “Russell Baze agreed to fy to Minnesota to ride the horses, and Canterbury Downs made a big thing of Russell riding at their track. Tey even gave a reduction on (the price of ) beer for every race he won. “We also had the favorite in a futurity race at Los Alamitos that night, so I went to Los Alamitos while (Teresa) went to Canterbury. Checking early for udder problems can avoid diffculties for nursing foals

dder problems are not as common in mares as in cows, but there are a few things that occasionally occur to create a problem for a mare. Dr. Ahmed Tibary, emeritus professor of theriogenology at Washington State University, says there can be abnormalities in lactation or mastitis (infammation of the mammary gland).

“Mastitis in mares is rare,” Tibary said, “but when we see this problem, it’s usually early in lactation or at weaning. If a mare is kicking at the foal when it tries to nurse 28

or is a little lame due to pain when she moves a leg forward, the udder should be checked.” Some problems occur before a mare starts a reproductive career, but those are usually congenital. Occasionally, a flly will have inverted teats, too-small nipples, or even extra teats. “Tere is one case described in the literature in which a mare did not even have an udder; it was completely absent,” Tibary said. Occasionally you might see mammary secretion in a young flly during the frst days of life. “Tis may look like milk and has been called witch’s milk,” Tibary said. “Tis

secretion is due to the dam’s hormonal infuence during pregnancy and generally halts on its own within a few days. “Tis situation can become complicated, however, if a person tries to milk or touch the little udder and it becomes infected. Enlargement of the flly’s udder should also be diferentiated from other possible problems, such as hernias or some other abnormality of the ventral abdomen.” In the adult mare, one of the most common abnormalities is lactation in a mare that is not pregnant. “Tis is called inappropriate lactation or spurious lactation,” Tibary said. “We tend to see this phenomenon during a

ly when we suspect something like an abscess,” Tibary said. “Even better than ultrasound is to do cytology on the discharges. When doing these diagnostics, particularly on mammary glands that are irregular in shape or seem to be a little hard or contain nodules, the best method we could use would be a biopsy of that area and examination of that tissue.”

Problems with the mammary gland can also sometimes occur in late pregnancy. “For example, there may be severe edema before she foals,” Tibary said. “A mare may have a very sore udder and sometimes some blood-tinged fuid seeps out. Tis is sometimes just a reaction to the change in hormones.” Some mares develop a large amount of edema. “It’s not really an enlargement of the www.ctba.com

mammary gland as much as fuid buildup in tissues around the udder,” Tibary said. “Some mares start leaking blood along with the milk. If there is blood in the secretions, the mare may be rupturing the suspensory ligament of the udder.” If a mare develops edema in and around the udder when she is not pregnant, this may be part of a larger complex of edema resulting from disease. “For example, if there is edema in the entire limb, this may be indicative of equine infectious anemia or equine viral arteritis,” said Tibary. “Some viral diseases cause increased edema in the udder.” For a mare with excess edema around the udder, treatment is aimed at reducing swelling. “Tese mares often respond to anti-infammatory drugs,” Tibary said. “Otherwise, we just treat them locally with cold compresses.” Sometimes a mare has poor lactation or absence of milk when she foals. Te udder does not develop the way you’d expect, and she fails to provide adequate colostrum and milk for the foal. “Te most common reason is a maiden mare that takes a while to come to her milk,” Tibary said. “Also we see mares on fescue pasture that don’t produce milk, particularly if they have prolonged pregnancies. When she foals, the mare has delayed lactation, if at all.” PLACENTITIS AND IMPENDING ABORTION

Tose secretions can range from just serous fuid to actual milk and can be due to the combination of cyclicity in the mare and lush green pasture that sometime contains plant-origin estrogens.” As mares start cycling after winter anestrus, there may be leaking of milk. “Tis is linked to an increase in the hormone prolactin when the mare begins her seasonal cycles; the mammary gland starts developing,” said Tibary. “Sometimes the mare bags up but doesn’t have real milk, just a serous secretion. Others may actually produce milk. “It may have something to do with endogenous estrogens (from the mare herself), or estrogens from lush green pasture; it is generally related to an increase in nutrition along with the longer days that can cause an increase in prolactin.” It is always a good idea to check the mare if this happens, even if she has not been bred. You want to make sure there was not an accidental breeding and she is getting ready to foal. “Although rare, if the mare is developing an udder without pregnancy, it is also important to make sure it’s not due to a tumor,” Tibary said. “As mares get older, we sometimes see adenocarcinomas. Te mare’s udder should be inspected periodically to see if there are discharges (sometimes bloody) or there are any irregularities in the surface.” Mammary-gland tumors are rare and most likely to occur in older mares. “Signs usually start as a slow increase in udder size and some irregularity in shape,” said Tibary. “Sometimes this would be noticed as a non-painful condition when you are cleaning the mare, and you might notice a few drops of blood coming from a teat. If you feel the udder, there might be some asymmetry and irregular contour. Tumors of the mammary gland include melanomas. Tese can be relatively aggressive. Occasionally, we see some cutaneous lymphoma in the udder. Diagnosis for problems confned to the mammary gland would usually entail ultrasound of the udder. “Tis can give us a lot of information regarding what’s happening, particular-

She may be only eight months pregnant and starts making an udder or leaking milk. “Tis is a dangerous situation—a sign that she may abort,” said Tibary. “Te typical reason a mare would start lactating too early, between eight and 10 months or just before she gives birth, would be imminent abortion, either due to twins or some other problem. Making an udder too soon is generally the frst sign for abortion risk, and also for placentitis. “We generally can’t do anything to halt the abortion if the mare is carrying twins, but placentitis is something we can treat. It’s a huge risk, particularly in mares that are predisposed to ascending infection (from contamination of the vagina from January 2026

If a person keeps touching or even milking the udder to try to see what’s going on with it, infection might be introduced.” Treatment of mastitis in mares is not as simple or as easy as treating infection in cows. A cow has four quarters; each teat is associated with a separate quarter of the udder. In mares, however, there are two compartments for each teat. When you milk a mare, there are two streams of milk from that teat. Treatment of an infected compartment becomes more complicated. “Although some publications talk about infusing antibiotic directly into the mammary gland, this is not practical in the mare— frst of all because of the anatomy diference,” Tibary said. “Also, mares are very sensitive and don’t like anything injected into the teat.” Mastitis in the mare takes more care, and usually systemic treatment with anti-infammatory medications as well as systemic antibiotics, probably for a longer time. “It also helps to pack the udder with cold packs or use cold hosing if it is very painful,” said Tibary. “It’s a much diferent protocol (than in cows).” It’s also important to determine which pathogens you are dealing with. If you don’t fnd out what is causing the infection, you might not be able to treat it appropriately. “Some infections are caused by bacteria that can create bioflm and hide from any antibiotic,” Tibary said. “Tis may cause an abscess, and once that happens it can be very difcult to get rid of.” If the mare is lactating with a foal at side, the foal may also be at risk and will need another source of nutrition. Tis becomes more complicated and may get so severe that you’d have to consider surgery to remove the afected tissue. “A good thing about the mammary gland having two separate compartments (and on rare occasion, three), we usually see only one side afected and the other is normal,” Tibary said. “It’s possible to have DR. It is always a good idea to look at udders, even on non-pregnant mares. “It is important to pay attention to details, at least once a week,” said Dr. Ahmed Tibary, emeritus professor of theriogenology at Washington State University. “Take a look at the inguinal area. In a pregnant mare, you should defnitely check the udder frequently. There may be daily changes, and if you are not paying attention, you may miss some problem signs, especially if the mare is out on pasture and you are not looking at her daily. By the time you see a problem, it may already be too late.” Ticks could be attached to an udder or lodged between the teats. The mare could also have sores from fy bites. If the mare is working hard and sweating, there may be a mix of sweat, natural oils, and dust, creating a grimy substance between the teats that may be itchy or uncomfortable to the mare. “When checking the udder, be careful to not stimulate the mammary gland to where she might start lactating—if the udder is already enlarged,” said Tibary. “But any examination of the horse should include checking the udder to make sure there are no problems. Certainly for the broodmare, it is important to see how the mammary gland is developing during pregnancy and how it looks during lactation and after weaning.”

Botryomycosis is a chronic pyogranulomatous disease characterized by formation of multiple abscesses containing bacteria surrounded by eosinophilic material, which protects them from antibiotics and phagocytosis. Mammary-gland botryomycosis is a rare but aggressive disorder. Sometimes people think they can help a mare with a huge, painful udder at weaning time by milking her to take of some of that pressure. But that’s not a good idea. “It’s better to simply cut down her nutrition for a few days, like take her of pasture and put her in a dry lot to reduce feed intake,” Tibary said. “People are sometimes reluctant to reduce feed if the mare is pregnant again, but at weaning—when a foal is six months old or younger—the nutritional needs of the fetus at that point are not that great.” Reducing nutrition of the mare won’t harm the developing fetus. Te usual techniques to ease a mare through weaning are reducing her feed intake and hosing the mammary gland with cool water to ease the pain. With mastitis, the udder may be just a little enlarged or may be very tight and painful. “It may be so painful that the mare is lame and reluctant to move,” Tibary said. “Tere may be asymmetry (one side larger than the other), or some exwww.ctba.com

udate or lesions on the skin.” Another sign of mastitis, if the mare is nursing a foal, would be her reluctance to let the foal nurse because the udder is so painful. She may kick at the foal. Mammary-gland enlargement should be checked by palpation and careful inspection. “We may ultrasound the gland and do a bacteriological and cytological examination of the secretions to check for infection,” said Tibary. “Mastitis is relatively common in mares right after weaning their foals but is sometimes seen right after foaling. Sometimes the only thing that makes us suspect something wrong with the mammary gland is failure of the foal to grow normally—due to poor milk production.” Sometimes the best way to determine if there is a problem is to obtain a few drops of milk and see if there is any abnormality in color and/or consistency, like clots. “Mastitis and abscesses will require aggressive treatment to avoid further complications and loss of function,” said Tibary. “Treatment of mastitis in mares is often difcult—it’s not as easy as treating a cow. Mares don’t like to be injected in the mammary glands, and the anatomy of the mare’s mammary gland does not lend itself well to injections. We usually just try to strip out the milk and use anti-infammatory medications and systemic antibiotics.” January 2026

A Restricted Stakes Schedule for Registered California-Bred or California-Sired Horses

MAIDEN BONUS PROGRAM
