CALIFORNIA BREEDING STATISTICS HOLD STEADY
A
ccording to The Jockey Club in its annual compilation of breeding statistics, California again ranks second to Kentucky in mares bred and live foals, even though it remains the only state of the top five without the benefit of revenue from other sources of gambling. California also showed modest improvement in the rate of decline in live foals from the previous year, down 6.3% in 2025 from 2024. The California foal crop in 2024 was down 8.1% from 2023. Considering the doomsday predictions after consolidation of live racing in Southern California, expectations proved worse than reality. As I told Steve Andersen of the Daily
Racing Form, the official statistics from The Jockey Club were a pleasant surprise, because I was hearing more negativity from within the industry in both the north and south than what actually occurred. No doubt, this is the result of both the passion and resilience of our breeders, as well as the expanding initiative programs the CTBA has driven in conjunction with industry stakeholders that have helped generate funds to invest back into Calbreds. In addition, the CTBA recently announced further incentives, including an upcoming boost to the Cal-bred maiden bonus (funded jointly with the Thoroughbred Owners of California), a $1,000 bo-
nus per foal up to 25 for foals of 2027, waiving registration fees for foals born in 2025, 2026, and 2027, and a pilot program for broodmare-quality enhancement that will reimburse breeders $3,000 for each mare purchased out of state that meets specified criteria. As noted by DRF, among California’s stallions, 26 were bred to more than 20 mares. That list was led by Midnight Storm, who was bred to 82 mares, followed by Shaaz (69), Sir Prancealot (56), Hopkins (46), and Brickyard Ride (44). The following table shows the 10 top states and provinces with the most mares covered in 2024 sorted by number of state/province-sired live foals of 2025 reported through Oct. 13, 2025.

Vodka Vodka Wins on BC Card
California breeders Connie and Jerry Baker continue to strike gold with the broodmare Margie’s Minute. Already the dam of four-time stakes winner Om N Joy, Margie’s Minute was represented on the first day of the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar when California-bred Vodka Vodka won the first race. Trainer Aggie Ordonez, who also conditions Om N Joy, saddled Vodka Vodka in the one-mile allowance/ optional claiming race. It was the only non-stakes on the Oct. 31 Del Mar card, and in keeping with the lucrative day, it sported a $212,650 purse. Kent Desormeaux, who is also Om N Joy’s regular pilot, rode Vodka Vodka, letting her settle into third behind pace-
setting Legitimate. Vodka Vodka passed Legitimate to take a clear lead on the second turn, and she defeated favored Westwood by 23⁄4 lengths in 1:36.37, with Brazenly third. The Bakers bred Vodka Vodka, a 4-year-old daughter of California leading sire Stay Thirsty. They own her with Ordonez, Mclean Racing Stables, William Gorman, Anthony and Rachel Parsons, and Delbert Williams. Vodka Vodka broke her maiden at Del Mar Aug. 1 after two seconds in five starts as a 3-year-old in 2024. Two starts later she captured an allowance/optional claimer at Santa Anita, followed by the win on the first Breeders’ Cup day. That raised her total bankroll to $251,700.
FREE LIFETIME STARTS SERVICE EXPANDED The Free Lifetime Starts for Thoroughbred Breeders service, launched earlier this year by The Jockey Club, has been expanded to include all registered racehorses as well as younger horses that are registered but have not reached the track. The service provides a complimentary race record for Thoroughbreds that is updated after each domestic or international start. “We were pleased to provide automatically updated free lifetime starts to breeders for the current foal crop, and I’m glad we were able to expand the service so quickly to include breeders with horses already racing,” said Matt Iuliano, TJC executive vice president and executive director. Following direct emails sent to breeders of record announcing this expansion, more than 8,500 horses are now enrolled, representing approximately 2,250 unique breeders. Breeders may subscribe to

this service during the registration application process. Breeders of Thoroughbreds already registered, including those currently racing, can enroll by completing the Breeder Race Records Request available at registry.jockeyclub. com. Upon subscribing, breeders will receive an email with a link to all eligible horses, each linking to an Equineline.com Product 9 (Lifetime Starts in Past Performance Format) report.

Under jockey Manuel Americano, Hacksaw Mountain was forced out early, came three wide, and scored by three lengths in 1:14.13. Richard Barton Enterprises bred Hacksaw Mountain, a 2-year-old son of Bodexpress—Dynamic Mizzes K, by Mizzen Mast. Lu Thomas Lu Thomas, who with her husband, Graeme (Butch), was a major force in the hunter-jumper world and owned the Thoroughbred farm Willow Tree Farm, has died after battling cancer. She was 79. The Thomases have trained numerous top riders in the hunter-jumper world. Both they and their son, Guy, have ridden in the FEI World Cup finals. Butch, a native of New Zealand, once rode for the New Zealand Equestrian Team. He and New York-born Lu met at a riding clinic in 1963. Their honors have included the Sacramento International Horse Show Lifetime Achievement Award and the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association Lifetime Achievement Award. The couple have long raised racehorses and show horses at Willow Tree in Portola Valley. Willow Tree often consigns horses to California sales and was a regular consignor to the CTBA Northern California yearling sale. Willow Tree bred Moonless Sky, a California-bred daughter of Bold Chieftain, and sold her at the 2014 Barretts October yearling sale. Moonless Sky went on to earn $287,130 and won the 2017 Fran’s Valentine Stakes. The Thomases bred and raced multiple stakes-placed Oh Molly Brannigan and her daughter Reiwa, an earner of $166,548. The Thoroughbred and show horse worlds dovetailed well for the Thomases. They once took a Cal-bred named Native Code who was ruled off the track for his bad behavior and turned him into one of the best show jumpers in the country. The current leading earner bred by the farm is Piper’s Causeway, an earner of $188,406..

Jeff Siegel, a longtime handicapper and horse owner who for decades contributed his expertise to the many iterations of Santa Anita television productions, died of cancer at his home in Duarte Oct. 4. He was 74. Growing up in Southern California, Siegel became a diehard fan of California racing and UCLA sports. He had an early job working with sports commentator Jim Healy, who got him a job at Hollywood Park. Siegel quickly became an expert handicapper, and his picks appeared in newspapers throughout Southern California. Later, Siegel became a horse owner and co-founded Clover Racing and Team Valor with Barry Irwin. His enthusiasm whenever his horses won knew no bounds, especially when Martial Law surprised the field to capture the 1989 Santa Anita Handicap (G1). Jay Privman, the retired national correspondent for Daily Racing Form, told that publication that Siegel’s cheering in the press box and reaction to Martial Law’s victory was “seared into my brain.” Privman recalled that Siegel “ran out of the press box and down the stairs faster than Straight No Chaser in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.” Siegel was a featured part of “Inside Santa Anita,” a weekly magazine-style TV show that began in the early 1990s. He was also the featured handicapper on “Santa Anita Today,” a weekly, and then daily, live racing show that aired from 1994-2000. He was a key part of “The Best of Santa Anita: 1999,” the 1999 Eclipse Award winner for Local Television. Those shows led to the founding of HRTV in 2003, and Siegel was one of the original hosts. He later segued to XBTV, which was rebranded as 1/ST TV earlier this year. Siegel also contributed analysis, picks, and blogs to XBTV, 1/ST Bet and the Santa Anita Park website. “Jeff Siegel was, and will always be the epitome of Santa Anita Park,” said Nate Newby, senior vice president and general manager of Santa Anita. “He was incredibly respected, especially by his peers, which is somewhat unique in horse racing. He loved the sport, he lived the sport, and he was devoted to passing that passion along to everyone he met.”
A graduate of the University of Southern California Law School, Craigo became a certified tax specialist, devoting his practice almost exclusively to equine matters. In 1976, he was elected president of the California division of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. He served as the HBPA’s national vice president from 1977-79. Craigo contributed articles about equine tax matters to this magazine and many others. He represented more than 200 owners, breeders, trainers, veterinarians, and bloodstock agents worldwide. He was also a frequent lecturer before horse owner and breeder groups on equine taxation, syndication, and related topics.

GOT CHROME?
Two days after California-bred California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), another Derby winner, jockey Mario Gutierrez, was honored in Sacramento. The Latino Spirit Awards, established in 2002, are held in conjunction with Cinco de Mayo. Gutierrez, who piloted I’ll Have Another to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby, was one of 10 honored this year by the California Senate and Assembly. California Gov. Jerry Brown attended the dinner held the night before in conjunction with the awards. The timing couldn’t have been better, as many wanted to talk about the state’s own California Chrome. This is the first time that the Latino Spirit Awards have honored a racing figure. Gutierrez’s photo will hang in the Capitol Rotunda for a month along with the other honorees. Gutierrez was born in Mexico and initially began his riding career in$100,000 his nativeBetty country. He later was a huge success at Hastings RaceGrable Stakes before switching his tack to Southern California. course in Canada Mar PaulDel Reddam, owner of I’ll Have Another, noticed the youngster’s ability and suggested him to trainer Doug O’Neill for I’ll Have Another in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita. Gutierrez never lost on the colt in four starts—the Lewis, Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

BARTON’S DOUBLE OCEAN BEAR FOLLOWED MOHAVEN IN OCT. 31 STAKES
Barton Enterprises bred the winners of both Golden State Series-eligible 2-yearold divisions that day with favorites Mohaven, winner of the Golden State Juvenile Fillies for owners Legacy Ranch, and Ocean Bear. Their victories helped kick off the seaside oval’s 2025 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. “We were elated, just a great day Friday for the Barton ranch,” said Kate Barton
Penner, executive vice president for Barton Enterprises. Ocean Bear, by multiple grade 1-winning sire Bolt d’Oro, is the first foal out of the winning Square Eddie mare Ocean Dream. She was bred by Reddam Racing in 2014 and raced 47 times. The winner’s second dam, Walkingonadream, produced Reddam homebred Eddie’s New Dream (by Square Eddie), a multiple stakes winner in California of $716,540. Penner said that Ocean Bear’s victory was especially sweet for her father Richard. “My dad claimed the mare at Turf Paradise and picked out the sire,” said Penner. “He sought her out because he loved that family.” Given a dream run throughout by Umberto Rispoli, Ocean Bear wore down a

resistant pacesetter, Sammy Davis, by three quarters of a length. The seven-furlong test was timed in 1:23.38. Making his stakes debut, the California-bred ridging was sent favored at odds of 2-1 in the field of 10. It was his third consecutive win, all in statebred company. “He’s a nice 2-year-old,” said winning trainer George Papaprodromou. “He’s improving with every race.” Ocean Bear was offered for sale in last year’s Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale but didn’t reach his $75,000 reserve. “I’m so happy, in hindsight, that he didn’t sell,” Penner said. “But we weren’t going to let a Bolt d’Oro go for less than that.” Though he stands in Kentucky at Spendthrift Farm, where he has had 23 stakes winners from four crops, Bolt d’Oro is well-known in California. He won the Del Mar Futurity, FrontRunner Stakes, and Santa Anita Derby and was third in the 2017 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar, all grade 1 events. Ocean Bear began his career at Del Mar in mid-August with a runner-up finish behind Can’t Help Himself. Since then, it has been nothing but victories for the bay. He broke his maiden three weeks later at Del Mar, then prepped for his stakes bow with a 11⁄2-length tally against first-level allowance company at Santa Anita Oct. 4. He has now banked $200,350. Breaking from post two, Ocean Bear found room at the rail shortly after the break. He tracked the pace by less than two lengths for the first half-mile as Sammy Davis outfought Southern Melodee for the early advantage. Fractions were moderate for the half-mile as Legacy Ranch’s Sammy Davis clung to the lead in :44.95 seconds. Ocean Bear progressed along at the rail to engage with Sammy Davis heading into the stretch, then tipped out to challenge in the drive. The two fought hard through the stretch, but Ocean Bear gradually inched away in the final half-furlong to win. A fast-coming Can’t Help Myself got third, a half-length behind the runner-up. Pavlovian, one of two horses in the Juvenile Stakes field trained by Doug O’Neill, stumbled badly coming out the gate and unseated Juan Hernandez. The jockey was shaken but continued to ride the remainder of the card. Pavlovian did not appear to be injured.

It was the first stakes victory for the California-bred dark bay daughter of Kentucky stallion Yaupon. She was bred in California by Richard Barton Enterprises and is conditioned by John Sadler. It was the start of a great day for the Barton organization, which also won the Golden State Juvenile with homebred Ocean Bear. “We bred four of the horses in the Juvenile Fillies Stakes: the winner Mohaven and the third-place finisher, Liberation, for other owners, and two others that we owned,” said Kate Barton Penner, vice president of Barton Enterprises. “We were elated for all the connections.” Mohaven is the first named foal from her 7-year-old dam, Bahama Mischief, by Into Mischief. Barton purchased the broodmare, in foal to Yaupon, for $120,000 from the Gainesway consignment at the 2022 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Pete Parrella bought Mohaven in the Legacy Ranch name for $200,000 at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale. In her first try longer than 51⁄2 furlongs, Mohaven won for the second time in four lifetime starts, all coming at Del Mar. Most recently, she was runner-up behind Too Sassy in the Generous Portion Stakes at that distance Sept. 1. “She ran three good races here (previously), two seconds and a win,” Sadler said. “Now we had a little time to freshen her up for this one.” The trainer also raced Mohaven without blinkers for the first 22

A late betting move made Mohaven the 9-5 choice in the field of 11 2-year-old fillies for the seven-furlong Golden State Series event, with regular jockey Hector Berrios aboard. She broke cleanly with the leaders while racing three wide down the backstretch as Reddam Racing’s Cashed got the lead along the inside soon after the start. Cashed provided a good pace, bounding through a :21.90 opening quarter mile and :44.61 for the half. Mohaven rallied into second leaving the bend. At the top of the stretch, there was some bumping between Cashed and the challenging Mohaven before the winner took command down the lane. The stewards reviewed the incident but let the result stand. “She came in a little bit; (Cashed) came out a little bit,” Sadler said. “They www.ctba.com

The Sadler-trained Liberation finished evenly after a wide trip for third. The final time was 1:23.88. “This filly really impressed me today,” said Berrios, who has ridden Mohaven in all her races. “She moved well at the threeeighths pole, and she responded when I asked her to go after the leader at the top of the stretch.” Berrios won three stakes on the Breeders’ Cup opening card. The Chilean native took the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes with Conducted prior to Mohaven’s score, then teamed with Sadler again to capture the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) aboard Super Corredora later. Mohaven received $99,750 for the win, boosting her career earnings to $182,750.

hen Starlene Justice joined MyRacehorse about seven years ago, the Southern California college geography professor never dreamed that it would lead her to owning the Thoroughbred stallion Tizamagician. But as someone who tells her students to embrace possibilities, she’s tackling the challenge head-on. “I’m the last person that should be owning a stallion,” the 54-year-old Justice readily admitted. “I can only tell you that I just felt, at every step of this journey, that I was doing the right thing. And who knows? In the end we may come out of this smelling like a rose.” Justice and her husband,
David, were early investors in MyRacehorse, a well-known racing stable that acquires Thoroughbreds and sells micro-shares of less than 1% to fans desiring an “ownership” experience. One of the couple’s first ventures was Tizamagician, a son of 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow, a two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner and one of the greatest California-bred runners of all time. Tiznow enjoyed an outstanding stallion career at WinStar Farm in Kentucky as well before being pensioned in 2020. For the price of a couple of shares, they had a closeup view of Kentucky-bred Tizamagician, based in California with Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella. stakes over a 25-race career, including a runner-up finish in the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic (G1). He earned $741,851 before his retirement early in 2023. Now the only active stallion by Tiznow in California, Tizamagician moved to Linda Madsen’s Milky Way Farm near Temecula to begin his stud career later that year. He was nearing completion of his third season this summer when owner John Teglia decided he would sell the 8-year-old Tizamagician as part of a liquidation of his horse stock. Teglia was a fellow MyRacehorse partner who had acquired the dark bay stallion from MyRacehorse and co-owner Spendthrift Farm. An “obsessive fan of racing” from an early age, Justice had wanted to breed horses early on. “I know that’s kind of a weird thing for a kid to want to do, but that was my dream,” Justice said. She began that effort by supporting Tizamagician with a couple of broodmares. The mares included Sacred Beauty, a MyRacehorse alum Justice and her partners had claimed back as a broodmare prospect. Justice liked the look of Tizamagician babies at Milky Way and wanted more. Tizamagician’s first foal was delivered in February 2024, a filly out of the winning mare Esfera, by Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb. The dam was leased by the Justices’ Vendetta Racing Stable from Tegila. Starlene recently bought her at a sale for $1,500 after breeding her back to Tizamagician.
Starlene Justice has developed a bond with Tizamagician, first through MyRacehorse and now at Milky Way Farm
“John had offers from foreign buyers” on Tizamagician, Justice said. “We were going to lose him. We were building our program around him. I just couldn’t let that happen. I started calling people, emailing, texting.” She put together a small group and made an offer to Teglia. But it was not enough. Teglia had a better one from a breeder in the central Asian country of Uzbekistan, according to Justice. “It was literally the 11th hour, and I was going out to the farm thinking this was going to be the last time I would see him,” Justice said. “Linda had already told me we had lost him. “But then David called me and said MyRacehorse was working on it and it’s not over yet. Sure enough, they raised enough cash to match the other offer and John accepted it.” Justice, a lifelong resident of Southern California, has been teaching for 15 years, the last nine at Norco College, where she is also co-chair of the geography department. Norco is part of the Riverside Community College District. She and David, who is chief executive officer at a San Bernardino credit union, live in Devore. They have two sons, Ben and Sam. Besides horses, she enjoys writing and has authored two books, one fiction and one non-fiction. In fact, it was a novel she started writing years ago

centered on racing that led her to join MyRacehorse. “I had put it aside because I didn’t feel I knew enough about it to write that type of book,” she explained. “(MyRacehorse) got me onto the backstretch, into the winner’s circle; I got to meet other owners and connections. Some of the best friends I have in the world are people I’ve met because of MyRacehorse.” The Justices, the majority holder of a partnership of seven investors, will be standing Tizamagician at Milky Way for $2,500 in 2026. His first foals will be 2-year-olds in 2026, including a pair www.ctba.com
that belong to the Justices. “We think the foals speak for themselves,” Justice said. Noting his precocity as a 2-year-old when he ran five times, she added, “He was such a good, hard-trying horse. He’s got a good mind, a good disposition. He was really sound throughout his career, and he has great presence. He sires very correct horses, and they have a little spice to them, too.” Twelve mares were bred to Tizamagician during that partial initial season. He had 45 covers in 2024 and 39 this year, according to The Jockey Club statistics. Justice knows this is a risky situation given the number of available broodmares in the state, but she’s prepared while keeping a sense of humor about it. “I told David this is what I’m spending my money on,” Justice said. She also spoke of the advice she received from top MyRacehorse executives Joe Moran and Nick Hines. “I think the one thing they both stressed was not to go in too deep, too fast,” she said. “As you can see, I completely ignored that advice.” She added that she felt this was an opportunity she needed to take, saying, “Even if it seems a little ill-advised on paper, I think Nick and Joe understood that this was the case with Tizamagician.” November 2025

EAR PROBLEMS IN HORSES INFECTIONS, TRAUMA, AND INSECTS CAN AFFECT EQUINE EARS
H
orses’ ears are sensitive and delicate structures, well designed for excellent hearing. Horses in the wild depended on keen eyesight, sense of smell, and good ears to detect the presence of danger and flee before a predator got close enough to harm them.
30
The funnel shape of the ear captures and conducts sound vibrations, and the hairs inside the “funnel” provide warmth and keep dirt and insects from getting into the ear. The ear canal at the base of the ear drops straight down about two inches, then turns sharply before reaching the eardrum. This sharp turn also helps keep insects, dust, and dirt from getting into the delicate inner ear. Because ears are sensitive, they should be treated gently. Rough handling, as when bridling, can make a horse ear-shy. A head-shy horse that doesn’t want his ears touched may be remembering some painful experience or acting out of habit to try to protect his ears. Sometimes, however, a horse becomes sensitive about his ears because they hurt. He may have an infection or some kind of irritation within the ear. Flies or crawling
insects may get into the ear canal. Dirt or trimmed hairs may fall down inside. Fine inner hair should never be trimmed out of the ear, for they provide a lot of protection against foreign material getting into the ear. “There are many different things that can affect the horse’s ears,” said Dr. Tia Nelson, a veterinarian with a practice near Helena, Montana. “Trauma, infection, cancer, and other problems can negatively impact the ears.” Though Nelson is not an internal ear specialist, she has examined many horses’ ears throughout her career. “I remember one time seeing a whole group of horses that had beaten their heads up so badly—due to severe ear irritation— that their faces were swollen and they were missing a lot of skin,” she said. “I did an examination of the ears on one of them, after the horse was heavily sedated, because the horse was so upset that a person couldn’t even get near its head.” That horse had ear ticks, so she surmised that the rest of the group did also. “Ear ticks are a big problem in some regions,” Nelson said. “We don’t see them here in Montana very often, but this was in Colorado when I was still a veterinary student. It was amazing how much dam-

age those horses had done to their ears due to the annoyance, itching, and irritation. “I brought one of those ticks into school, and the pathologist identified it, and we had a long discussion about treatment. We ended up treating the group with ivermectin, and it was like a miracle for those horses.” said Nelson. INFECTIONS AND TRAUMA
Horses rarely suffer actual hearing impairment, but they occasionally lose hearing due to damage to the tympanic membrane (eardrum) in the middle ear. A punctured eardrum can sometimes occur from phys-
ical damage such as penetration by a sharp object or by a hard blow to the head, or infection in the middle ear. A punctured membrane cannot vibrate properly, and the horse loses hearing ability. Sometimes this membrane can heal, but often the partial hearing loss is permanent. Inflammation of the guttural pouch can cause swelling beneath the ear. The guttural pouch is a blind sac that opens into the eustachian tube (between the ear and the throat) of the inner ear. This pouch may fill with pus if it becomes infected, sometimes causing a chronic nasal discharge. Horses can also get inflammation of the
salivary gland below the ear. This can create pain and swelling, causing the horse to carry his head in an abnormal position and to shy away from having that ear handled. Infection is the most common ailment of the middle ear and may be the result of bacteria or viruses that enter the ear from the throat through the eustachian tube or even through the bloodstream. The middle ear is vulnerable to infection because it is warm, moist, and dark—an ideal place for bacteria to multiply. “Ear infections are more common in dogs and much less common in horses,” said Nelson. “I haven’t seen very many ear www.ctba.com
infections in horses, but they certainly can happen. Usually, what people notice is the horse shaking his head, or scratching one ear on a fence or tree, or even with a hind foot. It may be just one ear but can occur in both ears. “An itchy, uncomfortable ear is just one of many good reasons to not leave halters on horses.” said Nelson. Pus may develop within the ear from an infection, and the horse may have a fever or carry his head at an odd angle or have difficulty chewing. A middle-ear infection can make the horse head-shy and ear-shy. At first the infection may not produce any signs except ear rubbing or head tossing. But an untreated infection that proliferates can eventually lead to a skull fracture, convulsions, or even death. An ear infection can change a horse’s behavior and appearance as it gets worse or affect his balance or make him tilt his head. Pressure inside the middle ear from the infection can seriously interfere with his balance. Infection in the middle ear can have serious consequences. Irritation of the surrounding tissues and the resultant abnormal bone growth can damage facial nerves, paralyzing the muscles on that side of the horse’s face. If this happens, he cannot move his drooping ear. His facial muscles sag, the face looks twisted and often has a drooping lip, and he has no control over the eyelid on that side. Some horses have trouble swallowing. An infection that gets started in the middle ear has limited space and no other place to go as it proliferates. The horse’s eardrum is much tougher than that of a human, and it may not break, meaning the infection cannot break free and drain. So instead of draining to the outside, the infection may spread to the bones surrounding the ear at the base of the skull. The inflammation in these bones causes new bone growth, which eventually fuses the joint between the base of the skull and the hyoid bones, which extend to the tongue. With this fusion, there is no longer any “give,” and eventually the movement of the horse’s tongue breaks the new bony fusion. That can cause a November 2025

skull fracture—and subsequent contamination of the tissues around the brain— which can lead to death. This condition can be difficult to accurately diagnose. The horse’s head tossing, ear rubbing, and pain are often mistaken for other problems or bad manners or ignored. The bony enlargements will show on x-rays once they begin, but the head tossing, pain at the base of the ear, and sometimes eating problems are the only outward signs. The amount of damage to the surrounding bone will depend on how long the infection has been going on. Early detection is not always easy, especially since the first signs of ear pain may not yet be accompanied by abnormal bone growth; in the early stages the changes will not yet be evident on x-rays. But four to six months later the bony changes are usually visible. Thus, if a horse’s ear pain persists, a second x-ray should be taken. Middle-ear infections, if discovered early enough, can be successfully treated with antibiotics. They usually respond well to sulfa drugs, penicillin, and other antibiotics. A surgical procedure can relieve the stress and pressure on the ear bones and prevent eventual skull fracture in horses whose infections escaped early detection and already have excessive bone growth. EXTERNAL EAR PROBLEMS
Most ear problems are minor ailments involving the external ear and mainly cause discomfort rather than hearing loss or threat to life. Some of the problems that can affect the external ear are frostbite, lacerations, skin infections, burn injuries, warts and tumors, and insect irritations. “Trauma is fairly common; horses can get an ear caught on something, or may get an ear bitten by another horse,” said Nelson. “This is a common stallion injury, for instance.” Skin infections and insect bites are often aggravated further by dust or insects, and the horse may shake his head in annoyance. Flies and other external parasites sometimes get into the horse’s ears and cause discomfort. Horn flies are very small and often crawl in past the protective ear hairs to suck blood. Black flies may leave bloody scabs and crusts inside the ear where they 32

have bitten. Some kinds of small flies leave crusts that may itch and become sore. This soreness can be relieved by applying medication that contains corticosteroids to the inside of the ears. Some horses are hypersensitive to the bites/saliva of little gnats and midges (culicoides), which may cause skin irritation on the insides and outsides of the ears as well on as other areas of the body. To protect the delicate skin inside the ears against fly bites, you can gently smear a small amount of petroleum jelly on the inner surfaces of the ear—if the horse will let you handle his ears. The flies can’t bite through the jelly and will tend to leave the ears alone. The petroleum jelly is also soothing if the horse already has www.ctba.com
itchy fly bites and some irritation inside his ears. Ear nets drenched in fly repellent can also help keep flies from getting into the horse’s ears. “Biting flies can cause so much irritation that fly protection is crucial,” said Nelson. “Horses generally don’t like having their ears sprayed with insecticide or fly repellent, however. It may work better to put the fly spray on a rag to wipe on the ear. Sometimes I put it on my hand and gently work it into their ears. Generally, you don’t want to penetrate the ear very far with anything—definitely not all the way down into the ear canal. You can simply saturate the hairs a little way inside the ears. I do not recommend clipping ear hairs, as many people do for

best left alone unless they become too large. Most warts eventually go away on their own. Mature horses tend to have some immunities (warts are caused by a virus) and generally don’t develop this problem. Warts are unsightly, but harmless. They can cause discomfort, however, if irritated or treated, creating head-shyness. If a horse suddenly becomes difficult to bridle for no apparent reason, you may want to look inside his ears for warts or some other irritations. “Sarcoids can be a really big problem in ears,” said Nelson. “I have seen hors-

showing, since this removes a lot of natural protection.” Several type of small ear ticks, including the spinose ear tick, also get into horses’ ears occasionally. The larvae of the spinose ear tick burrow into the ear canal and stay there to grow for up to seven months. This causes a lot of discomfort. A horse with ear ticks will shake his head a lot, rub his ears, and will often have a droop-eared, unhappy look. Some types of mites can also cause problems in ears. Treatment with ivermectin helps kill any blood-sucking parasites and will often help control ear ticks and lice, and some types of mites. Ear mites can eventually destroy a horse’s hearing. The inflammation caused by the mites and the buildup of the debris in the ear canal from their activities can interfere with a horse’s perception of high-frequency sounds as well as some of the middle-range sounds. Mites and ticks can also irritate the ear to the point of causing it to secrete too much earwax. A special solvent may need to be administered by your veterinarian to dissolve the excessive wax so the horse can shake it out of his ear. “One thing we see pretty commonly is ears with aural plaques,” said Nelson. “They look like a fungal infection, but they are more like warts.” These wart-like, whitish-gray flat, flaky lesions sometimes appear on the inside of the ear. They are often caused by a papillomavirus transmitted by certain small flies. “They are often associated with black flies and tiny midges,” said Nelson. “These lesions are generally benign and not usually painful, but can sometimes cause discomfort or sensitivity, especially during fly season. There are some treatment options, but treatment is rarely necessary because these lesions are self-limiting. Prevention focuses on fly control—to protect those ears from flies. “The fly masks that cover the ears are very helpful. If you do use those, however, you should take them off every third or fourth day and rinse them out and clean them up, and make sure nothing got caught underneath them.” Warts are a fairly common problem in ears, especially in young horses. But they usually don’t bother the animal and are

es end up losing ears and fairly large chunks of skin around their ears because of sarcoids—depending on the treatment choices.” Water, small twigs, or leaves, or even pebbles can fall into a horse’s ear under certain circumstances and cause instant and intense pain. “I have seen foreign bodies like cheat grass and foxtail barley awns stuck into ears,” said Nelson. “Having something get lodged inside is not very common, however. The horse will shake the head, rub the ears, or hold one ear down and off to the side.” It can be difficult for a horse to dislodge a foreign object stuck in the ear because he can’t turn the ear completely upside down. All he can do is shake his head from side to side, which can result in driving the object even farther into the ear. But the hairs inside the ear can usually keep foreign objects from penetrating too deeply or quickly for the horse to shake them out. If a horse gets water in his ears, he is usually able to shake most of it out and the rest evaporates. If a horse starts doing a lot of ear rubbing, head shaking, or becomes reluctant to have his ears handled, try to discover the cause of his discomfort. Any swelling, lumps, or discharges around the ears should be examined by your veterinarian. “To do a thorough ear exam, the veterinarian will sedate the horse,” said Nelson. “No horse will tolerate having something stuck down the ear; the scope can be somewhat irritating. For the safety of the horse, the veterinarian, and you, this exam almost always requires sedation. Many horses are a bit ear-shy anyway, but even good, kind individuals who generally don’t mind having their ears scratched and messed with won’t tolerate having the scope inserted into the ear.” Don’t ignore a horse’s attempts to tell you he is uncomfortable. “If you notice a horse carrying one ear a little different or with a head tilt, or having trouble keeping his balance, this could indicate an inner or middle ear infection,” Nelson said. A thorough examination of a horse’s ears and proper diagnosis and treatment of the problem may be very crucial to his future well-being, or even his life.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Earnings are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan and Hong Kong. For example, the North American average earnings per starter in 2024 was $31,529 or 86% of the 2024 average earnings per starter in Japan. To put 2025 earnings on par, all Japanese progeny earnings are multiplied by 86% before being credited to a sire’s progeny earnings. For 2025, Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 17%; Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through November 2, 2025.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Sires that are dead, pensioned, or no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old. Statistics are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing with earnings adjusted for Hong Kong and Japan. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
