NORCAL YEARLING SALE HAS PROVED A GOOD HUNTING GROUND
Every year William Peeple’s Oliver keeps earning checks with a consistency that any racehorse owner would envy. By doing so, he also is a four-footed advertisement for the California T oroughbred Breeders Association Northern California yearling sale.
Now 4, Oliver went through the 2017 sale as part of breeder Tom Bachman’s Fairview consignment. John Brocklebank bought him for $30,000. Trained by Doug O’Neill, Oliver has earned $305,352. T e California-bred son of Papa Clem—Snobby Princess, by Premiership, won the 2019 E. B. Johnston Stakes, and his stakes-placings include a second in this year’s Tiznow Stakes.
For 2020 the CTBA will conduct the sale Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, beginning at noon. T e horses will be stabled in the permanent barns near the Amador Pavilion. In addition, a $500 travel allowance with a minimum purchase of $3,500 is being of ered to out-of-state trainers and trainers from Southern California who attend the sale.
Bachman has entered another consignment in the Fairview name for this year’s edition of the yearling sale. T e group includes a son of Danzing Candy and a daughter of Goldencents. T e colt is from the f rst crop of California stallion Danzing Candy, a multiple graded stakes winner.
Rancho de Los Aviadores is a regular consignor to the Northern yearling sale and will bring another consignment this year, including of spring by California stallions Vronsky and Boat Trip. Two previous graduates sold by Rancho de

Los Aviadores, Swing T oughts and Lakerball, are also six-f gure earners who have continued to run in 2020.
Swing T oughts, a 4-year-old Cal-bred daughter of U S Ranger—Ankha, by Desert Classic, has earned $228,162, is multiple stakes-placed, and sold for $7,000. Lakerball, a 4-year-old Cal-bred daughter of Lakerville—Category Ten, by Capsized, is a multiple stakes winner, has earned $181,731, and was a $1,000 buy-back.
Stay T irsty, Smiling Tiger, and Grazen have been among California’s leading sires this year. All three have yearlings entered in the Northern sale. Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch has consigned the majority of the Stay T irsty youngsters. Hanson’s River Ranch has entered a Grazen colt, and Willow Tree Farm Inc. has entered a Smiling Tiger f lly.
As this issue was going to press, entries for the 2020 sale were being processed. An early list of other stallions represented includes Acclamation, Awesome Gambler, Bal a Bali, Boisterous, Cat Burglar, Champ Pegasus, Circumference, Coil, Cyclotron, Dads Caps, Fed Biz, Field Commission, Govenor Charlie, Grace Upon Grace, James Street, Misremembered, Northern Causeway, Race Day, Shaman Ghost, Shanghai Kid, Smart Bid, Southern Image, Speightster, Stanford, Surf Cat, Time to Get Even, Ultimate Eagle, and Winning Cause.
