THE GREAT RACE PLACE CALIFORNIA-BREDS POISED FOR SANTA ANITAÕS WINTER MEETING

www.ctba.com

From the EXECUTIVE CORNER DOUG BURGE CTBA PRESIDENT

Favorable Prospects for 2017 As detailed in recently released statistics by Te Jockey Club, the trends within the California breeding industry continue to remain stable. For the third consecutive year more than 2,500 mares have been bred in the Golden State, resulting in live foal crops approaching 2,000. Tis past breeding season the reported change in mares bred was less than 1%, or 25 total mares (see chart below). Tis chart specifcally depicts the conception area and does not factor in the California foals by out-of-state stallions. Terefore, after factoring in the several hundred California foals expected to have been conceived in Kentucky and elsewhere, the live foal crop for next year should be very similar to that of 2016. As I have detailed many times, these healthy trends can be attributed to the cooperation within the industry that have provided the lucrative enhancements to the California-bred racing and incentive program. Te total Cal-bred program—at more than $35 million a year in restricted purses and incentive awards—has fueled the investment by California breeders.

2016 Stallions

Recently I attended the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, and it was very rewarding to see many California farm owners, breeders, and agents quite active in the sale with the goal of upgrading their broodmare bands and bringing more quality mares to the state. As California-breds continue to make up more than half of the feld sizes north and south, and California racing becomes more dependent on locally bred horses, these statistics bode well for the future of racing in the state. Plus, even with the upward trend in the live foal crop, the emphasis still remains on quality, as a higher percentage of the horses being bred are making it to the races. It is also important to note that, unlike in other states, we are realizing these positive results even without revenue from other forms of gambling. Restricted purses and incentives continue to remain strong strictly through the pari-mutuel handle. Te prospects for next year look very favorable, and the expectations are strong for more positives on the breeding front. Happy Holidays.

California Chrome to Stand for $40,000 California-bred superstar California Chrome will stand the 2017 season for $40,000, according to Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made Farm. The horse has been scheduled for some time to begin stud duty next year at Taylor Made near Nicholasville, Ky. Taylor said that plans call for California Chrome to make his fnal start in the inaugural Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park next year before heading to his new career. However, Taylor also left open the slight possibility that California Chrome could continue racing at age 6. California Chrome LLC, which owns the son

■ Jeranimo to Harris Farms

A son of Congaree—Jera, by Jeblar, Jeranimo won the 2012 Shoemaker Mile Stakes (gr. IT) and 2013 Eddie Read Stakes (gr. IT). He also won fve grade II events, including the 2010 Strub Stakes. B.J. Wright and Robert LaPenta campaigned Jeranimo, who was trained by Mike Pender.

Three Move to Daehling ■ Three stallions—Sierra Sunset, Run Brother Ron, and Brave Cat—have moved to Daehling Ranch in Elk Grove for the 2017 breeding season. Sierra Sunset earned $459,696 in three seasons of racing. The 11-year-old son of Bertrando won the 2007 California Cup Juvenile Stakes and Bay Meadows Juvenile Stakes and the 2008 Rebel Stakes (gr. II). Sierra Sunset is out of the stakesplaced Pirate’s Bounty mare Toot Sweet. Run Brother Ron won the 2007 Beau Brummel Stakes and Everett Nevin Alameda County Futurity. He earned $190,781 during four seasons of racing. By Perfect Mandate, Run Brother Ron is out of the Bold Badgett mare Aloha Mangos. Brave Cat is a 10-year-old son of Lion Heart— Clever Squaw, by Rahy. He did not race, but he descends from a rich black-type family. Clever Squaw is out of multiple graded winner Tricky Squaw, who also produced stakes winner Tricky Six.

of Lucky Pulpit—Love the Chase, by Not For Love, purchased mares at the fall Kentucky sales to support the stallion. Those purchases included grade I-placed Right There for $325,000 and graded stakes producer Uchitel for $420,000. “We’re going to do everything to make this horse the kind of stallion that he deserves to be,” Taylor told BloodHorse. He added that crosses with mares by Empire Maker, Scat Daddy, and Arch were among those that look promising. When Taylor Made bought into California Chrome, the farm brought in several major breeders. The most recent was the China Horse Club, who purchased a share in October.

Millionaire Jeranimo has moved to Harris Farms near Coalinga for the 2017 season. Owned by the Jeranimo partnership, the stallion entered stud in 2015, with his frst foals arriving this year.

FASIG-TIPTON PHOTO

Love the Chase, the dam of multiple champion California Chrome, sold for $1.95 million Nov. 7 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale in Lexington. Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned the daughter of Not For Love—Chase It Down, by Polish Numbers, and she sold in foal to Tapit. Bloodstock agent California Chrome’s dam sold in foal to Tapit John McCormack signed the ticket for an undisclosed client, though he said the mare would remain in the U.S. “California Chrome is a lovely looking horse; he’s a very good horse; he’s a very honest horse, and he’s a deserved champion,” said McCormack. “And when a mare like this comes into the ring producing the horse of the caliber that she has, you have to pay the market price. I thought that this was the market price.” Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bought out a racing partnership on Love the Chase and bred her to Lucky Pulpit to get California Chrome, whose lifetime earnings of $14,452,650 makes him the all-time leading North American earner as well as the all-time leading Cal-bred earner.

Romance Is Diane

10 YEARS AGO Romance Is Diane parlayed a victory in the Oct. 28 California Cup Juvenile Fillies into a score in the $459,250 Hollywood Starlet Stakes (gr. I) Dec. 17, 2006. “I had marked a Cal-bred seven-eighths race at the beginning of this meet, wanting to see what she could do,” said trainer Mike Mitchell. “But I didn’t like that race because it was seven-eighths.” Instead, Mitchell put Romance Is Diane into the 11⁄16-mile Starlet and came away with frst prize, as the 2-year-old flly defeated Quick Little Miss by a length in 1:42.61 while ridden by David Flores. Senji Nishimura owned Romance Is Diane, and the Swan Equine Service Co. bred the daughter of In Excess—Romantic Fibs, by Prized. Romance Is Diane earned $712,718 on the track and sold for $1,350,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November mixed sale.

California-bred French Seventyfve defeated a feld that included several international runners in the $250,000 Bay Meadows Handicap (gr. IIT) Dec. 14, 1991. Coming from sixth early, the 4-year-old colt and jockey Gary Boulanger found a narrow opening between horses to sweep to a length victory over Forty Niner Days, with Irish-bred Batshoof third. Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg trained French Seventyfve for

the Gayno Stable of Homer Noble and Edward Gaylord. Gayno had bought him for $325,000 from the dispersal of the late Lou Rowan at the CTBA Sales’ fall mixed sale. The gelding later fractured a pastern in a workout and successfully returned to racing after undergoing an operation to insert three screws into the pastern. Rowan, in partnership with Wheelock Whitney, bred French Seventyfve, a son of Boitron—High Pheasant, by Ack Ack.

50 YEARS AGO Lou Rowan’s homebred Quicken Tree won the Tropicana Hotel of Las Vegas Handicap at Bay Meadows Dec. 10, 1966. It was only the second stakes victory of what would become a long and illustrious career for the California-bred, who did not race as a 2-year-old because he was a nervous youngster. Over a muddy track Quicken Tree defeated Hy Pirnie by 11⁄2 lengths with Raul Caballero in the irons. The gelding completed the 11⁄16 miles in 1:473⁄5. Quicken Tree ultimately won such races as the 1968 Jockey Club Gold Cup and 1970 Santa Anita Handicap, earning a total of $718,303. The California-bred son of Royal Orbit—Mother Wit, by Counterpoint, is buried at Santa Anita.

WINNERS FOUNDATION’S DECADES OF SERVICE As the Breeders’ Cup heads well into its fourth decade, so does the Winners Foundation, which began in 1984, the same year as the Breeders’ Cup. The late Lou Rowan, a former president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association and a founder of the Oak Tree Racing Association, brought a group together to found the Winners Foundation to help people in the racing industry with substanceabuse diffculties. The Winners Foundation does its work 365 days a year, often 24 hours a day, assisting those in need. Rowan initially called on Gino Roncelli, Herman Smith Jr., and Joe McAnally to develop the organization. “The racing community has always been about taking care of its own,” said Bob Fletcher, executive director of the foundation. “Winners Foundation is blessed to be allowed to offer and support second chances for those employees who have lifestyle struggles.” Donations are critical to keeping the Winners Foundation running. It also benefts from such functions as the Backstretch Bash, a barbecue held Nov. 1 at Santa Anita for trainers, their staffs, and their families. OWNERS CONFERENCE DOVETAILS WITH BREEDERSÕ CUP New and prospective owners who want to learn more about the experience had a unique opportunity during Breeders’ Cup week at Santa Anita. They received an up-close look at Breeders’ Cup activities as well as hearing advice from numerous panels at the Thoroughbred Owner Conference, co-hosted by OwnerView and BloodHorse. California owners such as Barbara Banke of Stonestreet Stables, Billy Koch of Little Red Feather Racing, George Bolton, and John Amerman made up some of the panels. Also popular were panels of well-known jockeys and trainers. Jockey Richard Migliore moderated the jockey panel, consisting of Hall of Famers Chris McCarron, Gary Stevens, Lafft Pincay Jr., and Mike Smith, all regular riders in Southern California. Stevens and Smith remain active, with Smith adding three more Breeders’ Cup victories this year to his all-time record—aboard Arrogate, Finest City, and Tamarkuz. The jockeys told tales of riding, as well as how they initially wanted to participate in other athletics, such as football. McCarron, who now runs a jockey school in Kentucky, discussed the importance of proper training for riders. Simon Bray moderated the trainer panel of Art Sherman, Eoin Harty, Jerry Hollendorfer, Phil D’Amato, and Richard Mandella. They discussed the importance of a good relationship between owners and trainers, especially keeping the lines of communication open. “Certain owners want you to communicate with them different ways,” said D’Amato. “Most of them love texting.” Mandella discussed the importance of respect on both sides, adding, “You want to have a confdence level there. Pick someone that you’re comfortable with because it is a partnership.” Bray coaxed humor out of the trainers as well, especially when he asked them what they would have done if they weren’t a trainer. “Very easy choice for me—I’d be an actor,” deadpanned Mandella. “I’ve been acting like a trainer for 42 years.”

NewsBits $950,000 FOR EVENING JEWEL Evening Jewel, the 2010 California-bred Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old flly, sold for $950,000 at the Keeneland November mixed sale Nov. 8. She was in foal to Pioneerof the Nile, sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Taylor Made Sales Agency as agent consigned Evening Jewel to the sale for Aaron and Marie Jones, who acquired her in 2011. Shadai Farm of Japan purchased her. The 9-year-old mare has produced foals by Medaglia d’Oro, Bernardini, and Tapit. Betty Mabee and her son, Larry, bred Evening Jewel, a daughter of Northern Afeet—Jewel of the Night, by Giant’s Causeway. She sold for $8,000 as a yearling at the 2008 Keeneland September sale. Racing for the Braly Family Trust and trained by Jim Cassidy, Evening Jewel earned $1,221,399, with seven victories in 19 starts, six seconds, and two thirds. At 2 in 2009, she won the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. She added the Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT), San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT), and Honeymoon Handicap (gr. IIT) the following year, and in 2011 she took the Sunshine Millions Distaff Stakes. Her stakes-placings include a third to Dubai Majesty in the 2010 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (gr. I).

Golden State Series On the frst day of the Breeders’ Cup, 2-yearold fllies competed in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes, with How About Zero giving Square Eddie yet another stakes winner. Te males stepped forward on the Breeders’ Cup second day in the California Juvenile Stakes, another showcase for California Diamond. Earlier in the meet older horses had their turn, in the California Flag Handicap. Acceptance returned triumphantly to the stakes ranks in his down-the-hill turf performance. CALIFORNIA DIAMOND’S GOLDEN STATE JUVENILE

Prior to the $196,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes, California Diamond ran better in open company than against Cal-breds. Not that he has ever turned in a poor performance. In seven starts this year the colt has won fve races (four of them stakes), and fnished second twice in Cal-bred stakes company. Te Golden State Juvenile went of as the day’s second race on the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup card. Seven faced the starter in the seven-furlong event, with California Diamond the 2-5 favorite. California Diamond showed early speed, vying with Sizzlin Square for the lead down the backside. On the turn California Diamond and jockey Kent Desormeaux ranged up outside of Sizzlin Square to edge ahead while Hot Smoke sneaked through on the rail to get into contention. Tose three turned for home racing as a team, though Desormeaux never used his whip. He had the measure of his rivals and simply asked California Diamond for enough in the fnal strides to get the job done. Tey won by three-quarters of a length in 1:23.72 over Hot Smoke, with Milton Freewater third. “It was a great trip—there’s a reason Kent’s in the Hall of Fame,” said trainer Peter Miller. Miller took over from John Brocklebank in California Diamond’s tutelage after Brocklebank sold the colt, through Havens Bloodstock Agency, at the Barretts Del Mar paddock sale in July. California Diamond topped the sale at $125,000, with Rafael Becerra Jr. purchasing him for Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch. Hartunian said that Nick Hines initially

brought California Diamond to their attention. Becerra checked out the colt and recommended the purchase. “He runs with his ears pricked; he’s having fun; he’s got a great mind,” Becerra told Hartunian. “Let’s buy him.” Stormy Hull bred California Diamond, a Cal-bred son of Harbor the Gold—Carrie’s a Jewel, by Slewdledo. Brocklebank got him for $35,000 as a yearling at the 2015 Washington Toroughbred Breeders’ Association sale. Hartunian has been an enthusiastic buyer and participant in California’s racing and breeding program. He had a great time celebrating in the winner’s circle after the race after sweating out the result. “I’ve got Kent, who’s the ultimate pro, and he tells me that the horse likes to play around out there,” Hartunian said. “He gets me a little nervous. But he said that today was the colt’s best day. He’s learning, and that’s why we didn’t run him in the (Breeders’ Cup) Juvenile (gr. I) because we want to give him baby steps.” California Diamond raised his earnings to $377,780 with the Juvenile victory. HOW ABOUT ZERO’S GOLDEN STATE JUVENILE FILLIES

When the son of a friend interviewed with Paul Reddam for an internship, Reddam suggested a salary of $10 an hour. Te kid took a shot and countered with $15, to which Reddam said, “How about zero?” “Te kid’s eye’s got big as saucers, and he agreed to accept $10,” said Reddam. “So I decided to name a horse after him.” About the only thing as certain that Reddam would have a clever story behind the name was that he would be winning a Cal-bred stakes with an ofspring of Square Eddie. How About Zero, a daughter of the stallion from the In Excess mare Too Much Excess, broke her maiden Nov. 4 in front of the Breeders’ Cup crowd in the $200,690 Golden State Juvenile Fillies. Tough she hadn’t won a race going into the seven-furlong Juvenile Fillies, How About Zero had demonstrated ability to Reddam, trainer Doug O’Neill, and jockey Mario Gutierrez. “Mario thought after that last race that maybe a set of blinkers would do the

I think the blinkers made her focus more.” Reddam, who likes to back his horses at the windows, was shocked at How About Zero’s price as the ffth choice. “I was absolutely shocked we were 10-1 today,” he said. “I thought she’d be 4-1, with me betting. orse racing continues to teach us that sure things don’t exist. Enola Gray looked as close to a sure thing as possible in the $100,000 Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 13. Yet Chao Chom didn’t let a 1-9 shot faze her and upset Enola Gray. In fve lifetime starts Enola Gray had taken home three stakes trophies, losing just once, when second to Bendable in the open-company Beverly J. Lewis Stakes at Los Alamitos. She went into the Grable of a sparkling victory in the California Distaf Handicap at Santa Anita. Chao Chom had started six times, none in stakes company, with only a maiden event in the win column. She had never fnished worse than third, however, and came from the barn of trainer Gary Stute. Te trainer’s father, Mel, knows how to win with California-breds, as he proved with Snow Chief in the 1986 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) en route to an Eclipse Award for the colt. “I got tired of her getting beat as the favorite,” said Gary Stute. “So I put her in a race where I knew she wouldn’t be the favorite.” Te seven-furlong Grable attracted a feld of six Cal-bred

fllies and mares. Enola Gray and Chao Chom were the only 3-year-olds in the bunch. Chao Chom, the 8-1 second choice, bounded away on top under jockey Kent Desormeaux, but Enola Gray and Tyler Baze immediately engaged her from the inside. Tose two battled throughout the race, their fractions of :23.17 and :46.17 ensuring that both could hold of any challenge from the others. Into the stretch, when it looked like Enola Gray would shake of Chao Chom and stroll to victory, Chao Chom changed the game plan. She stuck with the favorite, passed her, and hit the wire 13⁄4 lengths ahead in 1:22.53. Five-year-old Cuddle Alert fnished third, 23⁄4 lengths behind Enola Gray. “We won easy, so easy,” said Desormeaux. “Tere were dawdling fractions. She was just cantering down the backstretch. Microchips have long been used in dogs and cats as a means of recognition among veterinarians and shelters, and that had expanded to include racehorses in many other countries outside the United States. Starting Jan. 1, microchips will become a mandatory requirement when registering foals of 2017 with Te Jockey Club.

Dr. Jeremy Whitman illustrates the procedure of microchipping horses, a procedure all registered Thoroughbred foals will have in 2017

horse. Currently, when breeders are reporting live Toroughbred foals, Te Jockey Club already sends a registration application and a DNA typing kit. Foals of 2017 will also receive a microchip. It is up to the breeder to have a veterinarian come place the chip, which is implanted in the nuchal ligament, partway between the poll and withers on the left side of the horse. “Any sort of push back is cost associated with the implanting

of the chip itself because it is a procedure that should be done by a vet,” said Chesser. “So, therefore, there are costs associated, as well as the cost of purchasing a reader. But our counter is that this is a long-term investment into the identifcation of each horse.” Samantha Smith, the registration and industry initiatives specialist at Te Jockey Club, explained, “Not only does it help during the horse’s racing career but also helps the ID process with Toroughbred aftercare. It’s a good, helpful tool for people hoping to adopt a Toroughbred, as it tracks throughout the life of the horse.” Although Te Jockey Club has been working with adopters to look up lip tattoos and DNA samples for years, the process can take time. With microchips it will be much easier. “On our website itself, there’s a place you can look it up by the microchip, and can immediately see race record information, fve-cross pedigrees, sales information, and it’s a totally free service,” Chesser said. He even touched on situations where getting information can be critical, such as at a pen with horses slated for transportation to slaughter. “If you have a chip reader, you can pull all their information very quickly.” Aside from the actual implantation of the chip and gathering of the DNA, the ability to do everything else online should make the transition easy for farms. “Everything I describe in registering your horse can be done online with our free interactive registration service,” Chesser said. “Just sign up, get a username and password, and submit all the information. Not only does it help during the horse’s racing career, but also helps the ID process with Toroughbred aftercare. It’s a good, helpful tool for people hoping to adopt a Toroughbred as it tracks throughout the life of the horse.” — Samantha Smith, Te Jockey Club

people to do business.” Before microchipping and DNA requirements, the only way to identify Toroughbreds at the track was via their lip tattoo. First started in 1947, the tattoo was a big leap forward in identifying Toroughbreds, which can look very similar with only a small range of colors and markings. However, the tattoo, an inked marking on the upper lip, can become faded and difcult to read as the horse ages. “Microchips won’t replace lip tattoos,” Chesser said. “Tose are administered and applied through the Toroughbred Racing Protective Bureau. But there are a number of jurisdictions that allow for microchips to be used as a means of race-day identifcation, either in conjunction with or in place of a lip tattoo. Tose aren’t going away, and that’s not a decision that Te Jockey Club could make. “But my sense is that racetracks and other stakeholders in the industry can appreciate the use of microchips as a solid means of identifcation throughout the life of the horse. I foresee (microchips) always being involved in that process now.” In 2007, there was a brief push to microchip horses in California. “Ultimately, everyone gave up,” Baedeker said. “At that time, there was a great fear of the unknown. But that is not the case anymore.” In the Golden Gate pilot project, Baedeker said, “Te cooperation was impressive. Of course, some people didn’t want to be bothered at frst. But when I pointed out that having the horses chipped early is free of charge and that after the enactment of our new rule it won’t be free anymore, I would say over 60% of trainers voluntarily participated. We (in racing) generally don’t go along easily with the rest of the world, but in the case of microchips, we are catching up quickly.” Chesser agrees that the industry is ready for the change. “By and large the response back when we were doing the initial research and speaking to customers and breeders was overwhelmingly positive. Tat was what helped make the decision. Since then it’s still been very positive. People see both the short-term and long-term benefts of having microchips be a lifelong part of the horse.”

CAL-BRED CHAMPION 2-YEAR-OLD FILLIES LINKING PAST TO FUTURE FOUR FOOTED FOTOS

BY ELLEN PARKER

Although disqualifed from her Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies victory, Cal-bred Fran’s Valentine won the Kentucky Oaks, four state championships, and more than $1.3 million

“One’s prime is elusive. You little girls, when you grow up, must be on the alert to recognize your prime at whatever time of life it may occur. You must then live it to the full,” –Muriel Spark, author of Te Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

W

hile it is generally agreed that juvenile fllies mature faster than their male counterparts, they are frequently more than just precocious fashes in the pan. Among these California-bred juvenile flly champions are females that have been bright lights, not just at 2, and that have gone on to become classic horses and fne producers. Tey have, in other words, enriched the breed.

A quick glance at this list gives us two very notable examples of fllies that made headlines far beyond their homes. One is Hot n Nasty, the tiny daughter of Refected Glory who was the only flly able to test the mighty Rufan, which she did in the 1974 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth. Te race is on YouTube, and it still sends chills down the spine. Tough Hot n Nasty was not quite as sharp at 3, she still went on to win a division of the Test Stakes (gr. III) and retired with career earnings of $263,922. At stud she produced stakes winner Delta Lima before dying of cancer at age 9. Te other is the lovely Fran’s Valentine, who crossed the wire frst at 74-1 in the frst Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) in 1984 only to be disqualifed for interference and placed 10th. Te winner, Outstandingly, was awarded the Eclipse, but the following year Fran’s Valentine won the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). Fran’s Valentine also went on to earn $1,375,465 and titles as champion 3-yearold and older female in her home state. As a producer, she got grade I winner With Anticipation and grade III winner With Fascination in France and lived to the grand old age of 25.

Fran’s Valentine is the only millionaire of the group, but House of Fortune ($989,185) came close and Memorette ($896,753) was not far behind. Quality goes along with money earned in most cases, and grade I winners among the group include Fran’s Valentine, Romance Is Diane, Fabulous Notion, A Kiss for Luck, Dominant Dancer, B. Toughtful, and Astrious. A dozen more of these fllies won grade II races: Approved to Fly, Batroyale, California Nectar, Career Collection, Humorous Lady, Special Warmth, Starry Ice, Walk in the Sun, Cover Gal, Hot n Nasty, House of Fortune, and Memorette. Te last quartet also placed in grade I races. SIRE LINES

It takes just a glance to see how very potent the infuence of In Excess became. Tis Grey Sovereign-line horse sired fve 2-year-old flly champions in Controlled, Jetin Excess, Repo, Romance Is Diane and Spring Awakening and was also broodmare sire of Ismene. Te only sires to get as many as two of these champions are Refected Glory, sire of Hot n Nasty and A Kiss for Luck; Swiss Yodeler, sire of Swiss Lake Yodeler and Tilde; and Saros, who got Fran’s Valentine and Saros Brig. General Meeting sired champion Career Collection and was broodmare sire of Saucey Evening. Kennedy Road sired Variety Baby and was broodmare sire of Jetin Excess and Lady George. Stormy Atlantic is the sire of California Nectar and the broodmare sire of Pacifc Heat. Carson City is the broodmare sire of California Nectar and Spring Awaken-

Fran’s Valentine is not the only one of these fllies to earn more than one title. Te others are Romance Is Diane, Fabulous Notion, Work the Crowd, Cover Gal, and B. Toughtful. All won 3-year-old flly titles as well, with Work the Crowd also adding a female turf championship and B. Toughtful a champion older female title to their resumes.

ing. Tese sires’ prominent appearances in Cal-bred champions are unusual as neither ever stood in California. FAMILY LINES

Some intriguing family relationships exist among these fllies. Fran’s Valentine and Incindress both trace to the mare Sun Spot, a 1921 daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Omar Khayyam. Memorette and Romance Is Diane are both descendants of the foundation mare Balancoire II via half sisters Balance and Swinging, respectively. Swinging is also the dam of the great “Chocolate Soldier” Equipoise. Special Warmth, crowned in 1976, is the fourth dam of Pacifc Heat, champion in 2015. Fabulous Notion (1982) is a half sister to Margaret Booth, second dam of Ismene (2011). NOTABLE RELATIONS

Worth noting are some important relations and ofspring of this group. Controlled is a full sister to grade II stakes winner (grade I-placed) Icecoldbeeratreds. She is also the dam of grade II stakes winner Bear Now. In addition to her above-noted connection to Ismene, Fabulous Notion is a half sister to grade I stakes winner and Ever Ready Epsom Derby (Eng-I) third Cacoethes. She is also the dam of grade I winner Fabulously Fast. Fran’s Valentine is a full sister to grade II winner Iz a Saros while Variety Baby is a full sister to grade I winner Variety Road and is a stakes producer (stakes-placed Apollo King). Starry Ice is a half sister to stakes winners Champ’s Star and Distinguish Forum. She also produced grade I stakes winner Forest Danger. Tourulla is a half sister to grade II stakes winner Simple Magic and is a stakes producer (Sondeed). Romance Is Diane is a full sister to grade II winner Romanceishope, the champion Cal-bred 3-year-old male of 2001. B. Thoughtful won mulitple state championships and the Highlighting the versagrade I La Canada Stakes, above tility and importance of www.ctba.com

CAL-BRED JUVENILE FEMALE CHAMPIONS

Pedigrees regional families is that they contribute not only at home but also worldwide. Tis group of mares has had stakes produce in Japan (A Kiss for Luck’s Golden Cherry) and Germany (Approved to Fly’s Apia), and Career Collection is a half sister to Australian group I-placed winner Maraakiz while Approved to Fly is a half sister to Mexican stakes winner Lobo. As the old saying goes, blood will tell, and the quality these fllies’ bloodlines convey assures their perpetuation at home and in the most far-fung of venues. INBREEDING

Tis is not a heavily inbred group of mares. In fact, nine of them—A Kiss for Luck, Approved to Fly, Jetin Excess, Memorette, Romance Is Diane, Sierra Sweetie, Spring Awakening, Variety Baby, and Work the Crowd—have no inbreeding at all within the frst fve generations of their pedigrees. As one would expect, lines commonly found throughout the breed such as Nasrullah, Northern Dancer, and Hyperion are the most common, along with Mahmoud and Turn-to. Surprisingly enough, there is not much Mr. Prospector, who is found only in My Fiona (inbred to him) and Repo (whose dam is inbred to him). Among the more unusual inbreeding is to Court Martial (Fran’s Valentine), Damascus (Swiss Lake Yodeler), Never Bend (House of Fortune), My Babu (Swiss Lake Yodeler and Tilde), Northern Sea (Saucey Evening), Sir Gallahad III (Walk in the Sun), Son-In-Law (B. Toughtful), Vice Regent (My Fiona), and Victoriana (Lady George). COURAGE AND HISTORY

Te overall mix of sire lines, foundation mares, and inbreeding represents the variety of philosophies and proven crosses that California breeders have used over the years. Te broad spectrum of bloodlines, some unique to the region, make these fllies not just state-bred champions, but standouts in any group of precocious misses that fans and breeders alike look forward to every year. Written in their blood is the history of the state, its racing and breeding, taken at its prime. Some performed in juvenile races alone, others did better 48

rancisco Gomez joined the team at Daehling Ranch in 1990, cleaning stalls as a newly turned 18-year-old.

In 1991, Francisco’s brother Jose, younger by one year, accompanied him to work. Te pair have been farm owner Joe Daehling’s longtime right-hand men ever since, on the job for 26 and 25 years, respectively. “He is my assistant manager now,” Daehling said of Francisco Gomez. “He knows the routine at the farm.” Francisco started with humble intentions, but quickly worked his way up to be indispensable on the property. “He learned how to be a horseshoer,” Daehling said. “He’s really very good at shoeing. He trims the feet on all our horses and shoes the ones that need to be shod. I can count on him.”

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED

Farm veterinarian Dr. Nicholas Carney helped guide Francisco into the horseman he is now. “He taught Francisco how to sew up a horse with minor injuries,” Daehling said. “It has saved me a lot of money in medical expenses in a non-emergency situation.” Francisco does the foaling during the spring, spending the season in a bungalow apartment at the farm and paying attention to the Foalert system. “He gets out and foals 35 to 45 mares per season,” Daehling said. Te rest of the year, Francisco has his own home in the country nearby. While working with Toroughbreds is his life, Francisco actually has a soft spot for Spanish Andalusian horses, especially those that are trained to “dance” or perform intricate routines that showcase agility and balance.

❙ December 2016 ❙ www.ctba.com

“He’s very interested in all horses,” Daehling said. Francisco and Jose both work six days a week, starting at 7 in the morning and going until 3:30 in the afternoon. “Unless something special happens,” Daehling noted. “Ten they stay later.” Jose’s memory for horsefesh has astounded Daehling on numerous occasions. “He has an exceptionally good memory. We take the horses out of their pastures when we irrigate, which means they move every 10 days. He knows exactly where to fnd every single horse despite all the moving around.” Jose is the one responsible for irrigating all the paddocks and felds, and he helps with repairs around the 400-acre farm. “He wants to do everything exact—he’s very meticulous, very particular,” Daehling said. “Everything has to be in its place. Jose writes everything down for us, important things and when horses come and go from the farm.” During breeding season both men assist in handling the stallions and breeding the mares. Tat is no small feat, as Daehling Ranch will play host to 11 stallions in 2017. Te list includes Peppered Cat, sire of grade III stakes winner Pepper Crown; grade I winner Mast Track; sale-topping juvenile Gotham City; the well-bred Under Caution (by A.P. Indy); and Niagara Falls (by Giant’s Causeway); as well as multiple stakes winner Gallant Son. “Tey do all the work together,” Daehling said of the brothers from Jalisco, Mexico. “Brothers working for us; it’s a nice team.”

DR. DOROTHÉE KIECKHEFER BY EMILY SHIELDS

D

r. Dorothée Kieckhefer has had a life split in two distinct acts. She grew up in Germany, holds a Ph.D. in criminal law, and worked as an international business journalist for many years. Now living on a cattle ranch in Arizona and breeding Toroughbreds, she is widely removed from that version of her life. “I grew up around hors-

es, riding mainly dressage,” Kieckhefer said, “and later was introduced to Quarter Horses and Appaloosas as well, then both a rarity in Germany. I read in an American Quarter Horse Association magazine about the Racetrack Industry Program at the University of Arizona that focuses primarily on second-degree students inter-

She had recently married Bill Kieckhefer, whose late uncle Bob raced Quarter Horses piloted by none other than young jockey Bob Bafert, now a Hall of Fame trainer. Bill Kieckhefer moved his own cattle ranch operation to the current 10,000 acres, which includes 360 acres along the river with “lush, irrigated pastures and a state-of-the-art foaling and breeding barn.” When the economy crashed in 2008, Kieckhefer directed her eforts toward breeding California-breds. Te Cal-bred program “countered the decline in the racing and breeding industry with lucrative owners’ and breeders’ awards as well as the Golden States Series, which ofers very attractive purses,” Kieckhefer said. Just 10 years after beginning her dream “career” as a breeder, Kieckhefer sold the highest-priced Cal-bred at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale. She noted that a host of people deserved credit for the end result: a $230,000 son of

Young horses are among the most susceptible to the infuenza viruses

INFLUENZA IN HORSES PROACTIVE PREVENTION IS KEY BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

nfuenza is caused by a virus and is one of the most common infectious diseases of the respiratory tract of horses. It is endemic in the equine population of the United States and throughout much of the world. Young horses, ages 1 to 5, are generally the most susceptible. Older horses may have some immunity if they have encountered the virus in the past.

Tomas Chambers, PhD, professor and head of an OIE [World Organization for Animal Health] Reference Laboratory for Equine Infuenza at the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center, University of Kentucky, is on the international expert surveillance panel for equine infuenza. “Te panel meets every year in February or March to review the situation from the previous year, and what we learned about incidences of outbreaks in the U.S. and around the world,” Chambers said. 58

Te expert surveillance panel began with experts from Europe and the U.S. “Over the years we’ve added experts from Japan, Scandinavia, South America, and most recently from China and India,” said Chambers. INFLUENZA OUTBREAKS

“One of the curious features about outbreaks is that their pattern is diferent in diferent parts of the world,” said Chambers. “We are not sure why, but it seems to be associated with vaccination. In the U.S. there is a certain level of vaccination in the equine population, and the disease is enzootic—which means it is always around, at some low level.” In other words, nearly all horses in the U.S. are likely to be exposed at some point. “We generally do not see huge outbreaks. We see a few outbreaks at racetracks afecting one barn of horses, or an outbreak

California at Davis identifed some imported horses that were infected with the Florida Clade 2. Fortunately, they were quarantined, and the disease was caught before these horses could start any outbreaks in the U.S. But at some point there will probably be a re-introduction of Florida Clade 2, which makes it desirable for owners and practitioners to use vaccines with updated virus strains.” VACCINATION UPDATES?

MARTIN KING/SPORTPIX

Te Florida Clade 1 strain that the panel has been recommending is A/Ohio/2003, which is now 12 years old. “It makes me nervous that we are still recommending a 12-yearold virus strain,” said Chambers. “We don’t have good evidence to support a change yet, based on the Quarantining new arrivals until you are sure thay techniques we use for evaluation. are not infected with the infuenza virus is one of Tis puts a lot of weight on what we the best ways to prevent the spread of the disease call antigenic cartography—a mapping technique developed at the the U.S. But because the Florida Clade 2 University of Cambridge in England. We have not had horse trafc, we can’t expect that we will good evidence yet to support updating only have to worry about Florida Clade 1. or to change our recommendation away “Dr. Nicola Pusterla at University of from Ohio/2003.

at a veterinary hospital, like we saw in Oregon in October 2015, that afect a small number of horses before they get it under control. Tere was an outbreak in New York a few years ago that afected about 35 horses.” Tese are small sporadic outbreaks and are generally localized, although traveling horses can carry the virus with them and start another outbreak. “Tis is what we have been observing in the U.S. for a long time. By contrast, some other countries, like India, for example, have a very diferent pattern. Tey have had huge outbreaks involving many thousands of horses, and afterward the disease will disappear for about 10 years or so. Ten they’ll have another huge outbreak, followed by another long period of quiet. “Tey don’t routinely vaccinate in India. So we think what’s happening is that when they have a huge outbreak, just about every horse is exposed and develops some immunity. Tis high level of ‘herd immunity’ apparently stays in place for some years after. Tis has been adequate to keep the lid on the disease for a period of time, even in the absence of vaccination.” Such herd immunity eventually wears of, which prompts the next big outbreak. “Tis is a striking contrast to what we see in the U.S.,” said Chambers. “It makes us ponder which way is better. Is it better to keep vaccinating and keep a lid on the size of the outbreaks? Or is it better not to worry about vaccinating and every once in a while have to put up with a nationwide outbreak? I am quite happy with the approach that we’ve taken in North America and Europe, which is to vaccinate regularly. “Here in North America we continue to have a few low-level outbreaks, and nothing dramatic happening. It’s only been in the last three years that the vaccines have been catching up with the recommendation that we made in 2010—that vaccines should contain both the Florida Clade 1 and Clade 2 strains. “Fortunately, in the U.S. we have not had any outbreaks of the Florida Clade 2 strain for a long time now. Te fact that it has taken so long for the updated vaccines to reach the market has not really hurt

Vaccines for infuenza should contain both the Florida Cade 1 and Florida Cade 2 strains

“We are trying very hard to collect evidence from the feld that shows whether the vaccines are efective or inefective. We need to see some actual evidence that the vaccines are not as adequately efective in order to recommend a change in the virus strains. “We need to get that data, but it is very hard to get. When I talk to my colleagues who are veterinary laboratory diagnosticians, they can often provide virus samples for us, or PCR positives. But getting the case history is more difcult, and the vaccine history for these animals is often the hardest piece of information to get. It’s also the information that we are most interested in—not only which vaccine, but when that horse was vaccinated and how regularly it was vaccinated. “Te situation we are worried about is that an animal that we expect to be protected—because it was vaccinated within the last two or three months—has a breakdown in immunity and becomes sick. But we quite often can’t tell. “We may not know whether it was vaccinated at all, or a year ago, or nine months ago, or six months ago. In the cases we have been able to follow up, the last vaccination was typically between six and nine months previously. For a young horse, that period of six to nine months is a time when we would expect the efectiveness of the vaccination to be waning. “Tat kind of information—that the horse was vaccinated nine months previ-

ously, but got sick with infuenza—is not very convincing as evidence of vaccine breakdown, especially in a young horse. If we could get information that there are horses getting sick that were vaccinated less than six months previously, that would be useful information for the surveillance panel, in order to support a new virus strain recommendation for the vaccine. “We suggest to owners that if you have a sick horse with fever, cough, and nasal

VACCINES Several types of infuenza vaccines are available—the inactivated (killed virus) products administered intramuscularly, the modifed live virus vaccine administered intranasally, and the canary pox vector vaccine, which is administered intramuscularly. “I was involved in development of one intranasal product and have done research on several other experimental intranasal vaccines, so I have a bias,” said Thomas Chambers, of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center. “I think that an infuenza virus vaccine administrated by the intranasal route should be very effective because it should mimic the immune response that the actual infuenza infection stimulates. In particular, it should give good local protection in the nasal mucosa, which is the route of entry for infection. “I think that an intranasal vaccine has some inherent advantages, but other vaccine types have their own advantages, especially if you keep the horses regularly boosted.” It is important to follow label directions regarding administration, boosters, and vaccination schedules.

discharge (typical signs of infuenza-like respiratory disease), try to get the horse swabbed (to test for the virus) as soon as possible and get the swab sent to a diagnostic laboratory. Don’t put it of. Do it as soon as you notice that the horse is sick.” Such viral tests work best early in the course of the disease. Horse owners can also help by keeping good vaccination records, specifcs on when each horse was vaccinated and with what product. “We need the specifc product, not just the name of the company that makes it,” said Chambers. “Te big manufacturers today market various products, not just the equine fu vaccine, but maybe fve diferent kinds of fu vaccine, in diferent combinations with other vaccines.” PREVENTING INFLUENZA

For horse owners, vaccine is just one tool, since disease prevention is more complex than simply vaccinating horses. Biosecurity is also crucial to keep disease out of a horse farm or racetrack facility. “Some biosecurity procedures are very simple, such as just washing your hands,” said Chambers. “It’s also very helpful to quarantine new arrivals until you are sure they are not infected. For a small horse farm, that’s a major undertaking. But

Health this is how you keep most diseases out of your resident population.” Using separate grooming tools, water buckets, and other supplies with each horse is also helpful. “Te thing to remember about viruses, especially infuenza, is that they transmit very easily from horse to horse, and it does not have to be direct nose-to-nose contact,” said Chambers. “Horse owners need to be very conscious about how easy it is to spread the virus from a sick horse to another horse nearby. Te virus could

be passed from one horse to another on the grooming tools, or by someone using an endoscope on multiple horses without disinfecting it in between.” Fortunately, it is also easy to kill the infuenza virus if you just take steps to disinfect things between horses. “Soap and water will kill this virus, as will laundry detergent, bleach, Lysol, etc.,” said Chambers. “It generally doesn’t last a long time in the environment, but we are starting to realize that it maybe lasts longer than we originally thought. We

used to think it might last a few hours. But now we realize it may last a few days, or in some circumstances (shielded from heat and direct sunlight), it might last weeks. “It may be that 90% is dead within a few hours, but it could take much longer to kill that last 10%.” If a sick horse coughs into hay or bedding, and another horse comes along the next day or so and noses around in that hay or bedding, there might be a risk. “We are always interested in improving vaccine technology,” said Chambers. “My lab has done work on various new technologies over the years. Tere isn’t anything in the pipeline right now that will totally replace the conventional vaccines. Tey do work, if given on the proper schedule. “Practitioners like the fact that they can just give horses a shot in the neck, and horses are fairly used to getting shot in the neck. Tere are alternatives, and we’ve done a lot of work on some of those alternatives (such as the intranasal vaccines). In some respects, we think they work better. “Future vaccines may be diferent, however. In the human feld there has been a lot of work devoted to what is called a universal vaccine (against the basic virus itself rather than the various strains). We have our eye on that, as do the vaccine manufacturers. I am not aware of anything in the pipeline right now. We need to do a lot of work on that however, to be sure it is efective. “If it works, then we wouldn’t need to worry about updating the virus strains anymore. A universal vaccine induces the horse to make antibodies that will neutralize the virus—but not by attacking the specifc strain. Te virus has a defense of always changing its spots, and the idea is to not go after those spots, but attack the virus itself. “Even for humans, there is nothing like this being marketed yet. But there are several ideas in development, and we will see if those ideas are applicable for veterinary vaccines, and equine vaccines in particular.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old), a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2015 but will stand in the state in 2016. These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
