TRAILSCAPE IS: • Passionate about connecting people to their land and nature. • Protecting families, homes and properties from fire. • Providing a legacy for current and future generations to enjoy.

Exploring, enjoying and fully connecting with nature is one of Randy’s passions. He weaves that passion into his trail builds. As a business, Trailscape truly believes the ability to fully enjoy one’s property is essential to every home. Trails enable an instant connection to the land thus allowing homeowners to access otherwise inaccessible areas. In many ways, trails are becoming as important as driveways providing access to multiple points of interest. In addition, trails offer a higher level of safety, security and value. “Our trails are constructed in a way that they are wide enough with clearance on either side of excess brush that they naturally create effective fire breaks which help protect our clients, their families and their properties.”

Randy Martin has an award-winning team of professionals who design, build and maintain trails for private landownersand public entities. He often likes to share that, “while it may appear that trail construction is simple “landscaping,” this is not the case. Trail building is both art and science. The art part is augmenting the natural beauty and giving the user a sense of flow. While building a trail is not “rocket” science, it is the science of solving multiple terrain challenges and making the trail last for decades.”

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO KITCHENS 2023 PUBLISHER Heidi Gerpheide

Seamless Design

T

he kitchen is often the most used room of a home. A place to nourish your family and entertain friends. In the past, it was closed off from the rest of the house. Now, it is integrated into the main living room, and this has inspired seamless design between the spaces: a painting leaning against a backsplash and a table lamp on the counter. Consumers are moving the dining room into the kitchen, with enlarged islands and dining room tables that also serve as a prep surface. In our second edition of The Essential Guide to Kitchens, we share trends working their way into current design plans. Creating a space that is the meeting point of the home with storage efficiency and technology is at the forefront. Appliances have brought features usually reserved for professional chefs to the home, and tile has returned to counters and backsplashes. We also see a significant shift from white kitchens to wood cabinetry with earthy tone color accents, especially green. The trend towards warmth extends to faucet finishes, with matte gold making a comeback over stainless steel. Eco-conscious choices continue to be top-of-mind for designers and homeowners, and several products featured are from manufacturers with thoughtful environmental processes and the importance of considering legacy and quality in your purchase decisions. Thank you to our partners who participated in this edition and our loyal readers for your continued support. Heidi Gerpheide Publisher

Books REVIEWED BY KATHY BRYANT

Farrow & Ball: Recipes for Decorating

Text by Joa Studholme Photography by James Merrell Farrow & Ball: Recipes for Decorating was created by Joa Studholme, Farrow & Ball’s color curator, as a primer on choosing winning color combinations for every room of the home. Featured are thirteen case studies to be wowed by: a city apartment, a country cottage, a seaside escape, a schoolhouse repurposed for residential use, among others. Studholme explains how to select the right range and combination of colors to create a harmonious whole. What’s perfect about this book is that there is a detailed color palette that acts as a recipe with a list of ideas to use yourself. As he says in the Introduction, “There are no firm rules when it comes to decorating but, above all, your home should tell the story of who you are and contain what you love. Of course, one of the most important ingredients in any home is color.” Colors need to be combined and balanced, just like ingredients in a culinary dish, so that the result is greater than the sum of its parts.

Studholme has chosen colors for more than 4,500 rooms a year while working for this historic company begun over 77 years ago. After all that effort, he found choosing paint for this own house was difficult. “My budget was strict and I wasn’t the easiest client, but the use of Farrow & Ball colors has transformed a lively but rather tired and bland house into a little jewel.” HIs house as well as grand places like Deans Court are pictured to help readers decide on colors that work for them. Color is considered room by room in this book, showing how to combine color with light and space to get the most from every area, whether a large kitchen or a cozy bedroom. “Just as there are many ways to cook an egg, from a simple eggwhite omelet to eggs Benedict, there are countless ways to decorate a room,” he continues. This book covers both the simple and the opulent because the right room, like the right recipe, nourishes the soul. CH Farrow & Ball: Recipes for Decorating Text by Joa Studholme Photography by James Merrell 268 pages, 200 color photographs Hardcover 9 x 101/4 inches $50 US ISBN: 978-0-8478-6658-8 Rizzoli New York

All the kitchens featured illustrate the way we live today, from the gallery-inspired luxury of HenryBuilt to the efficient form and function of Space Theory. MINIMAL The kitchen was the focal point of the project. It sits at the crux of the home and facilitates the clients’ love of cooking, hosting, and acting as the hub for their extended family. Tailored to seamlessly integrate into the modernist stance of Cuppett Kilpatrick’s design, Henrybuilt’s kitchen system reflects the principles of function and minimal visual adornment. Luxury-level craft and materials add warmth and tactility. Behind the quiet exterior sits a high-performance system designed to take on every kitchen's specific tasks and activities. ARCHITECT Right before the pandemic started, Grant Kirkpatrick, founding partner of KAA Design, and his wife Shaya completed the total renovation of their kitchen in Manhattan Beach, which had not been touched since the home was built almost 20 years ago. The challenge was to create a new kitchen that still fit in with the rest of the home. For this, the architect worked with the team at Bulthaup to create a kitchen with a mix of charcoal gray lower cabinets, high-gloss white upper cabinets, and aluminum backsplash, which gives the kitchen dimension and character. FUNCTION Besides replacing the precipitous brick foundation, little about this beach bungalow project was conventional. The home–for two creatives, their family, and the ebb and flow of friends–was designed for the unpredictability of life. The principles of flexibility and adaptability were at play in integrating a Space Theory kitchen system into the project. The kitchen needed to maximize every inch of the space and stand out in its practical job performance. Space Theory's crafted system packs in function and flexibility. Liebherr

LIEBHERR’S REFRIGERATION EXPERTISE EXTENDS THE LIFE OF FOOD

L

iebherr, a global manufacturing company, has spent over 65 years specializing in the art of cooling and perfected refrigeration technologies for use in home kitchens. Few people have the time to shop for fresh food every day, but Liebherr’s pioneering BioFresh and PowerCooling technologies safely extend the shelf-life of food to keep it tasting market-fresh. Scientists report that food stays fresher for longer when stored slightly above freezing (32°F), significantly cooler than most massmarket refrigerators. However, low temperature alone is not enough to ensure freshness. Fruit and vegetables require humidity to remain crisp, while dairy products, fish and meat are optimally stored in dry conditions. To meet these varied demands, Liebherr's BioFresh drawers are precisely regulated to adjust humidity levels for the perfect preservation conditions. These innovative technologies dramatically extend the freshness, flavor and nutritional value of food. Widely used by professional chefs, Liebherr products are acclaimed for their quality, reliability and longevity. Interior designers seamlessly integrate the energy-efficient Monolith collections into countless elegant kitchen concepts to meet their customers' needs. With Liebherr you can count on a stylish kitchen with refrigeration technologies that always keep your food fresh. Liebherr, home.liebherr.com

Quarry House

ARTISAN CASE STUDY OF A PACIFIC HEIGHTS PALAZZO

M

aster stonemasons QuarryHouse joined the team of Skurman Architects, Tucker & Marks Design, Level 10 Construction, and Zeterre Landscape Architecture to renovate and restore a historic San Francisco mansion. The Italian Renaissance-style villa, designed by architect Henry Clay Smith in 1927, was inspired by a Fiesole Palazzo. Perched high atop Pacific Heights, the scope of the project for the 6,848 sq ft estate took eight years to complete. QuarryHouse's involvement began with the Grand Entry, where an intarsia marble floor features a field of Botticino Classico with Oro Toscano medallions etched in Emperador Medium marble. From the entry, a lyrical three-story Botticino Classico marble staircase winds ribbon-like up through the spine of the building. Because the veining needed to match, QuarryHouse spent over a year sourcing marble blocks. They worked with their partner company, CITCO of Verona, on the specifications. The stonemasons sourced, fabricated, installed, and restored marble throughout the residence's interiors, culminating in a fanciful Grotto and Pool leading to an Italianate garden. A fountain of intertwined dolphins centers the Courtyard. For the fountain sculptures, urns, and rosettes, QuarryHouse selected Talla Marble. Travertino Noce was the foundation for the paving, walls, and stairs. Custom Scala del Pesce cobblestone in Golden Granite covers the winding driveway.
