Heart of the Home
W
elcome to our inaugural issue of The Essential Guide to Kitchens. According to the National Association of Home Builders, kitchens are the most remodeled room in the house. Starting with the kitchen design, we delve into the form and function of the space with inspiration from designers Caren Rideau, Tierney Conner, Amanda Teal, and Henry Built. As in the rest of our lives, technology has made its way to the kitchen. We share a selection of smart appliances that make your daily life easier and might make you a better cook. The range of options is extensive, from Smart Technology for precision cooking to induction ranges that make the transition from gas easier to a legacy customdesigned range. The product selection for a new kitchen can be daunting with the expanse of choices available. We are sharing a few of our favorites for inspiration. Backsplash tile from Ann Sacks and Zia tile, discreet and beautiful storage from Modunolva at Chic Design, and Space Theory, and a beautiful hardware collaboration from architectural firm RAMSA with Rocky Mountain Hardware that looks like jewelry. A big thank you to all our partners who helped bring this publication to life and our loyal readers for your continued support. Heidi Gerpheide Publisher

HE KITCHEN is often called “the heart of the home,' but it should also reflect your personal style while being efficient. Some kitchens are designed for beauty alone and are only used for plating take-out food, while others are equipped with a chef's kitchen for entertaining. It is good to start with a theme or signature feature. It can be a waterfall marble counter or a pop of color. Bay area firm Tierney Conner takes their inspiration from architecture, and designer Amanda Teal reveals her inner classicist, kitchen designer Caren Rideau celebrates color. HenryBuilt is cerebral and efficient. The craftsmanship and whimsy of Plain English transport you to the English countryside. All are inspiring and speak to the homeowner's relationship with their kitchen.

Burkhart Bros A KITCHEN REMODEL TURNS INTO LUXURY HOMES
S
ince 2008 Burkhart Brothers Construction has focused on high-end renovations and luxury custom homes along what they coin “the Gold Coast” of Southern California. The increasing complexity and execution of numerous projects have contributed to their prestigious reputation as builders of unsurpassed integrity and cutting edge technology. Burkhart has cultivated long-standing relationships with preeminent tastemakers of the community, premiere architects, designers, carpenters and artisans. As a Newport Beach native and University of Southern California graduate Bryan Burkhart executed his initial career in the wine business and later developed a passion for building with his brother, Mark Burkhart. Interestingly enough, their first luxury project, was a kitchen remodel! The rest grew from there as relationships blossomed and inspiration continued to be driven by their extensive travels and keen eye for art. The Burkhart’s approach projects with an inquisitive yet technology driven nature; with the goal of understanding the client's needs and the architect's intent while managing the process with a build- progress tracking system viewable by the client. They are as comfortable building a contemporary cliff hanger as they are renovating a historic Hampton's style mansion, with trust at the core of the process. The tangible proof of their success can be found in the most exclusive communities Southern California has to offer—the place they call home. Follow their journey @burkhartbrosconstruction

Household Appliances that Bring Style and Efficiency to Your Kitchen
BY HEID I GERP HEID E

T
HE KITCHEN is often the center of the home, and it makes sense that our lives will flow into them. With smartphones part of our daily life and climate change on our minds, it is not a surprise that our kitchen appliances are reaching new levels of technology and awareness of what matters to us. A big trend is induction ranges as we move towards a non-fossil fuel range with proposed bands in new construction. Ranges have also reached a new heat efficiency and control level with smart technology. Access to clean water and cutting down on single-use plastic bottles has brought home filtration products to the front of the line. But we cannot forget style and beauty, as the ability to customize your appliances has become much more manageable, with options of custom color and size.
HESTAN 36” INDUCTION RANGE The Induction Range brings chef-grade power to the incredible efficiency of induction cooking. Utilizing highpowered magnets, induction elements generate instant heat within the cookware itself. No flames. Just pure culinary control. A 3,600-watt boost gives you exceptional searing power. Since all that heat goes directly into your cookware, your kitchen remains cool – and your range stays safe to the touch. Hestan’s PureVection™ technology delivers superior convection control for consistently exceptional baking, broiling, and roasting. purcellmurray.com

MONOGRAM The key featured items are the induction cooktop with guided precision cooking allowing the user to elevate their cooking prowess with step-bystep assistance and equal temperature distribution. And because of its sleek design, this appliance fits into any kitchen and is easy to clean. The built-in, panel-ready side-byside refrigerator, with its advanced temperature management system with multi-shelf air tower and climate control drawers, keeps food fresh while still keeping your kitchen stylish. It also has exceptional performance with a convection oven and, just like the cooktop, precision cooking that allows the user to become an elevated chef. monogram.com
HESTAN SMART GAS RANGE The art of cooking revolves around control. That applies to creating the perfect balance of flavors and the precise heat to bring them to life. A mere matter of degrees can mean the difference between a beautifully browned grouper and a mushy mess. The Smart range gives you precision control of your flame's temperature, not just the size of the flame. Set your flame's heat to the exact degree you need and automatically maintain the perfect temperature. Available in twelve signature color finishes. purcellmurray.com

LIEBHERR’S REFRIGERATION EXPERTISE EXTENDS THE LIFE OF FOOD
L
iebherr, a global manufacturing company, has spent over 65 years specializing in the art of cooling and perfected refrigeration technologies for use in home kitchens. Few people have the time to shop for fresh food every day, but Liebherr’s pioneering BioFresh and PowerCooling technologies safely extend the shelf-life of food to keep it tasting market-fresh. Scientists report that food stays fresher for longer when stored slightly above freezing (32°F), significantly cooler than most massmarket refrigerators. However, low temperature alone is not enough to ensure freshness. Fruit and vegetables require humidity to remain crisp, while dairy products, fish and meat are optimally stored in dry conditions. To meet these varied demands, Liebherr's BioFresh drawers are precisely regulated to adjust humidity levels for the perfect preservation conditions. These innovative technologies dramatically extend the freshness, flavor and nutritional value of food. Widely used by professional chefs, Liebherr products are acclaimed for their quality, reliability and longevity. Interior designers seamlessly integrate the energy-efficient Monolith collections into countless elegant kitchen concepts to meet their customers' needs. With Liebherr you can count on a stylish kitchen with refrigeration technologies that always keep your food fresh.

HE HARDEST PART of kitchen remodeling is the wide range of endless choices; it can be daunting. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HARDWARE Rocky Mountain Hardware is a staple of most designers who appreciate the fine craftsmanship made from mold to finish. The Alturas apron front self rimming sink is offered in a handful of finishes, but the silicon bronze light is a favorite; its artisanal texture and design will add warmth and style to your kitchen. rockymountainhardware.com
HOFFMAN HARDWARE Krista Hoffman launched Hoffman Hardware after designing a unique and sculptural brass hardware pull for her space in the 2017 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. The expanded Hoffman Hardware collection focuses on proportion and materiality while featuring simple and familiar shapes. Hoffman Hardware is hand-crafted and hand-finished in the United States by metal artisans. Inspired by vintage jewelry and historic metalwork like Ruth Asawa’s biomorphic sculptures and Richard Serra’s minimalist interventions. The jewellike Skinny Rectangle shown is hammered brass and is available in multiple lengths and finishes. hoffmanhardware.com

Plain English IMPECCABLE BRITISH CRAFTSMANSHIP LANDS IN LOS ANGELES
P
lain English was born out of looking for a simple painted kitchen for a Suffolk longhouse the founders were building. They decided to design the kitchen themselves, and after a magazine photographed the project, it brought a deluge of inquiries, and Plain English was born. Known for their upstairs/ downstairs and English country house design aesthetic, they offer a bit of whimsy with impeccable craftsmanship. “We are excited to bring our design sensibility to Los Angeles after launching Plain English in New York in 2018. Celebrating our 30th year in London, we felt that adding a bookend in LA with the Plain English Shop Kitchen at Nickey Kehoe made a lot of sense as we have been seeing a growing number of inquiries coming from the West Coast.” – Co-founder Tony Niblock
