THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO ARCHITECTS, BUILDERS & DESIGNERS 2022 PUBLISHER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I

n the ever-changing world the home is a place of safety, memories and comfort. The use of space has evolved, and we are bringing many of the features we searched for outside of the home in the past to our design plans. More gyms, media rooms, art studios, pool houses, bigger kitchens, offices, and outdoor entertaining space. I personally would love a garden shed inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s Dacha and Bunny Mellon’s Oak Spring Farm. Homeowners are thinking more about building legacy homes that will hopefully be passed down to the next generation or smaller wellcrafted spaces. The Essential Guide includes a stellar group, masters of architecture, building and design that will help you bring your dreams to life. They have been carefully selected by California Homes editors and represent the best in their field of expertise. We hope you enjoy the section features on the first accredited California female architect Julia Morgan, the next generation Door Whisperers at PINKYS, and world-renowned Decorative Artist Willem Racké. A big thank you and gratitude for your continued readership and support of California Homes. Heidi Gerpheide

Market Fresh LIEBHERR’S REFRIGERATION EXPERTISE EXTENDS THE LIFE OF FOOD

L

iebherr, a global manufacturing company, has spent over 65 years specializing in the art of cooling and perfected refrigeration technologies for use in home kitchens. Few people have the time to shop for fresh food every day, but Liebherr’s pioneering BioFresh and PowerCooling technologies safely extend the shelf-life of food to keep it tasting market-fresh. Scientists report that food stays fresher for longer when stored slightly above freezing (32°F), significantly cooler than most massmarket refrigerators. However, low temperature alone is not enough to ensure freshness. Fruit and vegetables require humidity to remain crisp, while dairy products, fish and meat are optimally stored in dry conditions. To meet these varied demands, Liebherr’s BioFresh drawers are precisely regulated with userfriendly sliders to adjust humidity levels for the perfect preservation conditions. These innovative technologies dramatically extend the freshness, flavor and nutritional value of food. Widely used by professional chefs, Liebherr products are acclaimed for their quality, reliability and longevity. Interior designers seamlessly integrate the energy-efficient Monolith collections into countless elegant kitchen concepts to meet their customers’ needs. With Liebherr you can count on a stylish kitchen with refrigeration technologies that always keep your food fresh. home.liebherr.com

the shining curves of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, The Walt Disney Center in Los Angeles and, his most recent construction, the Luma Arles. All prove that Gehry has left his indelible mark on the history of architectural design. As a bonus, Gehry’s own words describing the edifices are included near the photographs giving an added understanding. In this monograph, forty of Gehry’s most remarkable creations are presented by architect and critic Jean-Louis Cohen, alongside views of the interiors and exteriors of each building. Works are found throughout American and abroad, including the one-of-a kind Binoculars Building in Los Angeles and the Dancing House in Prague. FRANK GEHRY THE MASTERPIECES

Frank Gehry: The Masterpieces

For an authoritative compendium on the main masterpieces of architect Frank Gehry, this book is a must. Starting with the Hillcrest Apartment building he built in Los Angeles from 1961-62 and continuing to his current works, the book clearly shows his artistic progression and the depth and breadth of his work. Gehry experimented with a variety of materials from cheap mass-produced items like cement to space-age titanium. Using 3D computer modeling as an architectural tool, his buildings are remarkable and From his home in Santa Monica to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Frank Gehry has created consequential works of contemporary architecture all over the world, transforming the cities in which they were built.

Gehry, an unclassifiable and groundbreaking architect, has continually responded with finesse to the challenges of complex programming and building within particularly delicate urban frameworks. A pioneer in computer-aided design, he harnessed technology to conjure surprising and poetic forms. In this world tour, Jean-Louis Cohen—acclaimed historian, critic, and curator of architecture and urban design—draws upon his deep familiarity with the architect to present some forty spectacular buildings, from the Walt Disney Concert Hall to the Louis Vuitton Foundation, and from the Pierre Boulez Saal to the Luma Foundation.

At Home with Designers and Tastemakers: Creating Beautiful & Personal Interiors Text by Susanna Salk and Stacey Bewkes Photography by Stacey Bewkes Introduction by Susanna Salk

What could be more fun than a book that lets the viewer peek into the houses of design professionals? And fun it is to peruse this new book by the co-creators of “Quintessence at Home With” video series on YouTube, Susanna Salk and Stacey Bewkes. “I’m always preaching to others the idea of borrowing when it comes to design because it’s never a direct translation. If you love the salmon color that Timothy Corrigan painted the dining room in his chateau in France, try it in the guest bathroom in your apartment,” says Salk. Salk says that she is always inspired by designers’ homes and likes to pour the ideas back into her own house. She suggests that if you love art collections found in grand homes but don’t have money for antiques, buy three things of something you love. That will start a collection. There are many special homes featured in the book from the Montecito retreat of designer Suzanne Rheinstein to international photographer Pieter Estersohn’s restored Hudson Valley home to the West Hollywood bungalow of chef Lulu Powers. Each home is deeply personal yet there are ideas in the houses to spark the creative energy in almost everyone. “This book is like a personal photo album…We took some of our favorite visits over the years and distilled them into images, giving them their own chapter and adding our memories.”Besides this, both the homeowner and Salk give tips on how to implement design concepts into the readers’ setting and within budget. “The point has always been to give design a voice. May you find your design voice along the way as I have,” concludes Salk. Trailblazing ARCHITECT

Victoria Kastner Pens an Intimate Biography of Julia Morgan; The First Woman to Practice Architecture in California REVIEWED BY KATHY BRYANT

40 | CALIFORNIA HOMES

ARCHITECT JULIA MORGAN (1872-1957) was a woman of firsts: first woman to earn a degree in civil engineering from UC Berkeley: first woman to study architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris; first woman licensed to practice architecture in California. Over the course of her long career she designed more than 700 buildings, including the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, the Herald Examiner Building, many YMCA buildings and the Berkeley City Club, as well as many private homes, churches, schools and museums. She designed in a variety of styles from classical to contemporary. She also pioneered the use of reinforced concrete in buildings so when the Mills College bell tower she designed survived the 1906 earthquake, she became highly sought after. Julia Morgan is best known as the architect of Hearst Castle at San Simeon, the country estate she designed for William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s and 1930s. Not only was Morgan the architect of this spectacular property, she was also the sole landscape architect and interior designer. Recently The American Institute of Architects’ posthumously awarded her their highest honor, the Gold Medal, as their first-ever female recipient. There’s one more first. Dean Larkin Design PHILOSOPHY & BACKGROUND

D

ean Larkin, AIA has been described as the quintessential Los Angeles based state of the art luxury indoor/outdoor contemporary architect. A native of Los Angeles, Dean says that Architecture chose him in the sense that it’s both a passion and a career. His range and variety of projects are diverse with a focus on spectacular private residences in California’s best and most affluent neighborhoods; striving for c projects that evoke the unique climate, attitude and lifestyle of Southern California. Since graduating from the University of Southern California’s respected School of Architecture, Dean had the honor of being the first employee of Richard Landry, founder of Landry Design Group. Working there he designed many high-end residential and luxury destination projects all over the world. During his tenure, Architectural Digest featured many of the homes prepared under his careful preparation including the Hunts point residence of Kenny G. Leveraging his experience and countless referrals, he established his own firm, Dean Larkin Design, in 1999 to better focus truly unique and individual projects that reflect their sense of place, time and occupants. DLD focuses on maximizing the intrinsic potential of the setting while meeting the client's lifestyle, business or institutional needs. Dean eschews the simple geometrical uniformity of modern architecture and strives for a multi-layered complexity that is both effortless and elegant. His background in Traditional Architecture that required historical accuracy and getting the detail precisely right gives him an edge over his peers and affects his overall approach. Paul Brant Williger Architect ORDER, RESOLUTION & BEAUTY

F

or more than three decades, Paul Brant Williger has dedicated his talents to fulfilling the residential requirements and dreams of a host of discriminating high-end clients. The reputation he has built is that of a gifted architect with a proven ability to engage with patrons in such a way as to permit them to articulate and realize their own visions. Williger began his career in the office of Robert A.M. Stern and, like Stern, displays a keen understanding of the requisites for luxury living, his bespoke skills having been honed in the affluent enclaves of Southern California, from Laguna Beach and Montecito to Malibu and Beverly Hills. Although known for his fluency in a number of architectural traditions, Williger is not one to place style over substance. “The signature or brand is not crucial for me. What is important is that I have realized my clients’ desires and gone beyond their expectations. That’s when I know I have done my job.” This mantra has served him well and has been one of the keys to his building the exclusive and discerning client base that has followed him to his namesake architectural firm, Paul Brant Williger. “My approach,” he explains, “is to begin with the clients’ dreams, together with the site and the project parameters, and to articulate these into a built form. My task is to find the opportunities in each situation which, when addressed intelligently, add depth and richness to a project.” My clients come to me because they know that along the way we will navigate that process without losing sight of the aesthetics. The goal is order, resolution and beauty–not just getting a building permit.” Paul Brant Williger Architect, 110 N Doheny Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90211, 310.490.2742, willigerarchitect.com

LOS ANGELES-BORN ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS STUDIO with roots dating back to 1978, PINKYS (formerly Pinky’s Iron Doors and Windows) is credited with being a leader in popularizing the iron doors design trend favored by the country’s most celebrated architecture and interior design firms. Based in LA’s industrial capital and burgeoning arts district of Vernon—the family-owned company has maintained a steadfast commitment to offering innovative and high-quality iron and steel architectural products delivering the beauty of the Southern California indoor-outdoor lifestyle. As Dion shares: “We champion the creative lifestyle of LA—the light, the air, the palpable energy of the city—to create high-grade architectural elements that break down walls and create infinite opportunities wherever you see them.” Now, more than ever, a newfound appreciation for the home as the center of everyday life has re-energized PINKYS to seek to bring their design approach to a new generation of design professionals and aesthetes alike. Construction CORBIN REEVES CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES TO HELP THEIR CLIENTS RECEIVE THE CUSTOM HOME OF THEIR DREAMS

A

pproaching three decades in the home building industry gives Michael Reeves an intimate knowledge of his craft. His firm, Corbin Reeves Construction, was founded on a desire to combine his myriad of passions. “I wanted to be a carpenter, then an architect, a developer, a general contractor, and then I realized that home building encompasses something in each of those,” he says. “The process of creating is what motivates me.” Building various architectural styles and locations throughout Southern California – from an ultramodern home in the Hollywood Hills, an authentic French ch teau on the ocean to an Italian cliffside villa overlooking the ocean – Reeves and his team possess experience in precisely executing the client’s vision and fulfilling their dream. “At this stage I like to do projects that are unique and challenging,” he says. “I enjoy learning about the latest products and designs and implementing them.” A philosophy based on a collaborative spirit has resulted in a steady stream of impressive clients and residences for Corbin Reeves Construction. Whether the project is traditional or contemporary, the firm aims to meet the client’s needs and the architect’s vision. Currently a majority of Reeves’ projects are second and third homes, commissioned by clients who trust him to execute their vision while they reside elsewhere. “My favorite part of a project is revealing the end product to the client, especially when they have been gone for months and haven’t seen much of the construction process,” he enthuses. “When we do an unveiling, they are often moved to tears. That is an extraordinary moment for us.”

Decorative Artist Willem Racké Transforms Rooms with Life Enhancing Art and Decor BY KENDRA BOUTELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRIK ARGAST

DECORATIVE PAINTER WILLEM RACKÉ is a master of illusion. For the walls and ceiling of a gentleman’s dressing room on Nob Hill he duplicated the subtle celadon sharkskin and aged silver finishes of the owners’ antique shagreen boxes. At a Belle Époque styled eatery in Hayes Valley, he echoed Parisian decadence with dramatic acid green and crimson Art Nouveau murals. Growing up in New Zealand’s Dutch community, Racké did not envision himself becoming one of the San Francisco’s leading finish artisans. In his early twenties wanderlust set him off to explore Europe. Instead he landed in Manhattan where he learned the tricks of his trade. In 1989, armed with a keen eye for color and texture, he arrived to the bay area and founded Willem Racké Studio. Today an impressive list of interior designers and architects seek out his SOMA district studio where he and a team of artists conjure dreams and fantasies. While Racké specializes in private commissions, the prestigious San Francisco Decorator Showcase frequently features his flights of fancy. For the 2001 showcase located at the Commandant’s House in the Presidio, the artisan collaborated with interior designer Charles de Lisle to create the Ornithologists Tent. Racké painted a series of giant Audubon-esque birds flying across the canvas sky of the whimsical retreat. Nature again provided inspiration for his work at the 2014 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. In Heather Hilliard’s salon, Racké covered the walls with Venetian plaster resembling geological strata. The painter’s oeuvre is not limited to San Francisco. Racké travels nationally and internationally. For Andrew and Françoise’s Skurman’s Paris apartment renovation on the Parc des Invalides he crafted the faux marble neo-Egyptian entry. While classical architect Skurman selected local talent for the rest of the project he chose Racké for this focal element, observing, “He’s the best.” Willem Racké Studio, 1811 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94103, 415.252.1341, willemrackestudio.com ESSENTIAL GUIDE 2022 | 81

Zeterre Landscape Architecture UNIQUE LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR TODAY’S MODERN FAMILY

arrod Baumann, founder of Bay Area–based landscape architecture firm, Zeterre, confesses his first studio was his childhood garden on an 800acre historic ranch in California Gold Country. “I saved all of my money from working on the ranch to buy plants,” says Baumann who studied at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and once thought he wanted to be an architect. “By the time I left for college, I had a collection of over 200 difference species, most of them rare.” Baumann, who launched his firm in 2006 and attributes some of his inspiration to the Italian gardens on Lake Maggiore and the Garden of Cosmic Speculation in Scotland, has worked on garden design projects spanning India, Dubai, France, and Greece, and a romantic garden in Hollywood Hills replete with astrological-themed nodes. “I simply love good design and I am in a constant search for beauty in unlikely places,” adds Baumann whose work spans European and Japanese gardens. “I love that our projects are sitespecific and architecture appropriate,” he says. “I get to design so many different styles.”
