LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEAR SUPPORTERS,

T

his month marks my 4 year anniversary as the Executive Director of ChangeLawyers. In 2018, there was no pandemic.

The worst years of the California wildfires were still to come. George Floyd was a name known mostly by friends and family, not yet by the entire world. That said, I can distinctly remember how challenging I thought 2018 was due to rampant anti-immigrant and anti-POC laws, policies, rhetoric, and court decisions, like Trump v. Hawaii, which upheld the Muslim Ban. What I learned about adversity is that it is unavoidable. It may change shape and intensity. But, challenges to the realization of our shared humanity are part and parcel of

living in America. I sometimes feel overwhelmed by this. What I have learned is that at times like these, I can simply take a breath, accept this reality, and in the next breath, recommit to doing everything I can to bring more fairness through our legal system.

As lawyers, we have all taken an oath to uphold the constitution of the United States. This gives us a special responsibility to be caretakers of our society’s institutions, and to advocate to change them when they are unfair or unjust. Lawyers are changemakers. Whether we work in the public sector, private sector, or in the public interest, we can all play a role in building a better justice for all Californians.

In my 4 years as Executive Director of ChangeLawyers, I have come to firmly believe that every choice that we make matters. Whether it is how we direct our individual philanthropy, to pro bono cases that we take on, to organizations that we volunteer with, to how we treat each other as human beings, even though we may be opponents - every choice matters. And when I break it down to that very

humanistic level, I feel a little less daunted and a little more at ease. It is an absolute privilege to serve our California legal community in this role. And I am so glad that you are on this journey with me.

J

asjit Singh is a lifelong youth organizer, community advocate, and former educator, who currently serves as Director of Programs at California ChangeLawyers. Born in Punjab and raised in California, he is the son of Punjabi Sikh immigrants who taught him the value of education and community service from an early age.

After completing his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside, Jasjit returned to the Central Valley and began teaching Punjabi as

foreign language at a local high school. During that period, he witnessed glaring inequities in a resource depleted public school system- and decided to pursue a law degree in hopes of bringing systemic change for students, administrators, and teacher alike.

During law school, Jasjit worked for and volunteered at multiple renowned civil rights and human rights organizations focused on the Sikh community, including Jakara Movement, Sikh Coalition, and Ensaaf. He also served as a law 7

clerk for attorney Danielle Barger, now a partner a DB Squared Law in San Diego, CA. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Jasjit was selected for the coveted San Francisco Foundation Multicultural Fellowship. There, his funding efforts focused heavily on issues related to youth organizing, educational reform (school to prison pipeline,) and crimmigration. After completing his fellowship, he landed his current role at California ChangeLawyers where he focuses on scholarships, grants, and policy work. Some of his most impactful policy work arose in the last two years, during which ChangeLawyers joined other progressive organizations in successfully advocating for

the lowering of the Bar Exam cut score to 1390. Further advocacy also led to the California Supreme Court’s expansion of the Provisional Licensure Program to include individuals who scored 1390 or higher on any California Bar Exam administered between July 2015 and February 2020. This expansion thus provided Jasjit the opportunity to become a licensed attorney in the State of California.

After completing all the requirements, Jasjit was sworn in on March 7, 2022, by former California ChangeLawyers board member, Judge Carlos Dominguez, at an intimate event with Jasjit’s family at Judge Dominguez’s courtroom at the LA Superior Court.

Jasjit is excited to continue his role at ChangeLawyers. In his free time however, he plans to use his law license to provide pro-bono and low-bono legal services to historically neglected communities, including his own Punjabi Sikh community.

REMEMBERING ANJAN A

s a partner in the Los Angeles office of Munger, Tolles & Olson (MTO), Anjan represented major television and film studios, streaming platforms, talent agencies and a wide variety of other companies. He led key client relationships with many of the firm’s most important entertainment clients who routinely turned to Anjan for his insights and counsel regarding their most challenging legal and business issues. Among many others, his clients included Disney, Warner Bros., A+E Studios, Netflix, Twentieth Century Fox Television, and Creative Artists Agency.

Anjan brought that same commitment and passion to opening doors, breaking down barriers and dropping down

ladders for people of color in the legal profession and beyond.

He was dogged in his advocacy, mentoring and the promotion of attorneys and law students across the country.

At MTO, he served as co-chair of the Diversity Committee and led the firm’s efforts to recruit and retain diverse lawyers. His numerous and profound contributions include helping envision and co-lead the MTO Fellows Program, a pre-law diversity pipeline program that annually prepares aspiring diverse students for admission to and success in law school. Anjan had an innate ability to spot talent and was exceptionally skilled in investing in, managing and supporting other lawyers to ensure that they reached their full potential.

Outside the firm, Anjan served on several non-profit boards including California ChangeLawyers, coached high school debate, was actively involved in mentoring attorneys through bar associations, and worked to advance access to justice through a commitment to pro bono matters and public service.

Perhaps most importantly, Anjan was a wonderful, supportive brother who loved to explore the world with his beloved sister Tanya.

He was an avid fan of live music,

excellent food and his dog, Blu. He shared these passions generously with his friends, his family and his colleagues, creating community and building connections at every opportunity. Anjan possessed an irreplaceable and rare combination of brilliance, passion, grit and a heart of gold who inspired everyone around him to be a better person and a better lawyer. The legal profession is more diverse, talented and caring because of his tireless work.

California ChangeLawyers together with the family and friends of Anjan Choudhury and Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP established the Anjan Choudhury Memorial Scholarship in 2022 to honor the remarkable and yet too-short life of cherished friend, brother, son, partner, board member, mentor and colleague Anjan Choudhury. His legacy lives on through each of the many lives

that he touched, and he continues to inspire us to pay it forward. A legacy which will carry on with this Memorial Scholarship and through the amazing careers and journeys ahead of scholarship recipients.

THE 3L SCHOLAR MIXER & VIRTUAL CELEBRATION O

n April 20th, ChangeLawyers hosted The 3L Scholarship Mixer at soon-to-be-renamed-UC Hastings in San Francisco. It was a very small and intimate event with less than 40 people, including the scholars, representatives from co-sponsoring bar associations and ChangeLawyers staff and board members. We were able to provide $5,000 scholarships to 28 graduating law students who are preparing to sit for next month’s Bar Exam. This was our first in-person event in 2 years and we loved being able to build community and synergy. Let’s send good luck to this amazing group of changemakers as they sit for the bar.

Following up from the Mixer, we hosted a virtual celebration and fireside chat on June 9th to

MELISSA MURRAY again honor the 28 3L Scholarship recipients as well as present the Leadership Award to Melissa Murray. Murray is the Frederick I. and Grace Stokes Professor of Law at NYU, and a leading expert on reproductive rights. She is the host of the Strict Scrutiny, the breakout hit podcast about the Supreme Court and the legal culture that surrounds it. Murray is a graduate of the University of 19

Virginia, where she was a Jefferson Scholar and an Echols Scholar, and Yale Law School. Following law school, Murray clerked for Sonia Sotomayor, then of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and Stefan Underhill of the US District Court for the District of Connecticut. Murray is a member of the New York bar. Murray

teaches constitutional law, family law, criminal law, and reproductive rights and justice, among other courses. Murray’s research focuses on the legal regulation of sex and sexuality and encompasses such topics as marriage and its alternatives, the marriage equality debate, the legal recognition of caregiving, and reproductive

rights and justice. In 2010, Murray was awarded the Association of American Law School's Derrick A. Bell Award, which is given to a junior faculty member who has made an extraordinary contribution to legal education, the legal system,

or social justice. Prior to joining the NYU faculty, Murray was on the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. From March 2016 to June 2017, she served as interim dean of the Berkeley Law.

ALUMNI VOICES: MEET DAWN T. COLLINS

D

awn grew up in Princeton N.J. In 1991, she received a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. She worked as a financial planner in midtown Manhattan for three years after college before packing her bags and moving out to Los Angeles to attend law school at UCLA School of Law.

After graduating from UCLA with her J.D. in 1997, Dawn became the first associate in the newly opened Los Angeles office of Akin Gump where she practiced complex commercial litigation for six years before deciding to focus her practice on labor and employment

law. In 2006, Dawn began working as an employment litigator at Jackson Lewis where she became partner in 2010. In 2012 Dawn moved her practice to Ogletree Deakins where she was elevated to equity shareholder in 2015.

In 2018, Dawn and her longtime colleague, Tae Kim, left BigLaw to open their own firm, CollinsKim LLP, which focuses on plaintiffside employment law. Dawn’s experience representing corporations and advising C-Suite executives on a host of employment issues has made her well suited to represent individual workers in their employment disputes. Dawn lives in Baldwin Hills, CA with her wife who 23

is a registered nurse, and their two dogs. She enjoys spending time in her backyard, traveling, and visiting with family on the east coast.

QUESTION: CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT IT MEANT FOR YOU TO RECEIVE THE SCHOLARSHIP FROM CAL BAR FOUNDATION/ CHANGELAWYERS? AND WHAT IT MEANT TO YOU TO GO FROM CAL BAR FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT TO CHANGELAWYERS BOARD MEMBER? DAWN T. COLLINS: It meant a lot when I received the scholarship from Cal Bar Foundation/Change Lawyers. As a law student, the scholarship was real money, and I was very grateful for that. It also meant a trip to San Francisco for the ceremony and that was very exciting at the time. But it also exposed me to a community of people who cared about pro bono, who cared about helping others.

Sometimes the focus of law school and law students is to maximize self interest in the pursuit of high paying law firm jobs. That’s fine, and in fact I ended up in BigLaw, but receiving the Cal Bar Foundation/Change

Lawyers scholarship expanded my view of law and the practice of law. It certainly motivated me to take-on pro bono work as a young law firm associate, and once I became a partner, I made it a point to volunteer my time on nonprofit boards, including the ChangeLawyers board, and to lend the firm’s financial support.

It is a full circle moment to have the opportunity to give back and support the organization that recognized my potential over 25 years ago.

Q: HOW MUCH OF YOUR IDENTITY AND/OR LIVED EXPERIENCE INFORM YOUR WORK AND THE SPACE YOU OCCUPY IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION? DTC: Over time, my identity has increasingly informed my work and

the spaces I choose to occupy in the profession. I started practicing 25 years ago, and during that time I have grown personally and professionally. I was a much younger person 25 years ago and I was trying to figure out a lot more than just where and how I wanted to practice law. But it all falls into place eventually, and that’s a blessing.

that I can bring to whatever spaces I occupy professionally. My journey has taken me from scholarship recipient to law firm associate, to law firm partner, equity partner, and ultimately, the founder of my own law firm.

DTC: It was exciting and liberating.

Having practiced defense-side employment litigation for so many years, I was excited to carveout a niche on the plaintiff-side representing workers in various employment disputes including discrimination, harassment, and wage and hour violations. As it turns out, many of our clients are professional people of color.

I certainly became more confident as a Black lesbian in spaces that were majority white, male and straight, and I am grateful for all of the experiences that helped me reach that comfort level, including the support and advice of great mentors.

At this stage of my professional career, I have become much more aware of the unique contributions

I think that my own professional career and my own lived experiences have made me uniquely qualified to represent our clients.

In fact, we recently settled a race discrimination case for $5 million.

Not only were we able to obtain a great result for our client, but that case as well as other cases that we are privileged to handle, are validation of the professional choices I have made along the way.

I think eventually, if you stay true to yourself, you will end up right where you belong.

Q: WHAT IS SOME ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEGAL CHANGE MAKERS? DTC: My advice to the next generation of legal change makers is to know the law and to know yourself and your value. Be a good lawyer first. Know the law, think critically, be creative in how you approach and solve legal issues, do not assume anyone is smarter 27

LEADERS FORUM

F

or years, ChangeLawyers has asked each new class of scholars what more they need to be successful in their career. Is there anything ChangeLawyers could do—beyond the cash scholarship— to help kickstart your career?

The answer was resounding and powerful. Time and time again, our scholars told us they felt overwhelmed, emotionally spent, isolated, and fraudulent.

In 2022, we launched Leaders Forum, a 10-part leadership development academy to teach skills that are not commonly taught in law school. We divided classes into two tracks. The Power Track focused on emotional intelligence skills to combat feelings of imposter syndrome, burn out, and isolation.

The Career Track focused on practical job, networking, and public speaking skills.

Since launching in February 2022, Leaders Forum events have received over 1600 registration. Check out all our Leaders Forum events.

Our hope for the future is that we can continue to provide resources for outsiders who want a seat at the table. We want the next generation to become the leaders our country needs.

TRIPLING OUR IMPACT BY INVESTING FOR JUSTICE

C

hangeLawyers recently made a profound shift in our investment holdings to align much more closely with our organizational mission. For the first time in our history, the ChangeLawyers board of directors voted to move our entire portfolio into investments that follow Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria.

OUR $2M PORTFOLIO IS NOW INVESTED IN STRATEGIES THAT SEEK TO GENERATE A POSITIVE SOCIETAL IMPACT AND ENCOURAGE COMPANIES TO ACT RESPONSIBLY. In particular, where we can, we’re focused on finding opportunities to invest in companies whose

products and services contribute to solutions such as housing, community development, access to health and education, and companies who utilize sustainable corporate practices, including advancing DEI in the workplace.

We’re also endeavoring to screen out companies involved in alcohol, tobacco, firearms, mass

incarceration, and weapons of mass destruction. We are incredibly proud of this approach, which profoundly amplifies the impact of every dollar coming through the organization. Now, the entirety of our scholarships, grants, and investments are working together to build a better justice system for all Californians.

LEGAL AID GRANTS A

ccording to California statute, California ChangeLawyers distributes annual grants to legal aid organizations across California to increase access to justice.

ChangeLawyers is mandated to grant awards to organizations deemed eligible by the State Bar of California's Legal Services Trust Fund Commission.

This initiative was launched in 2019 and in 2022, our most recent distribution exceeded $500,000.

OVERALL, CHANGELAWYERS HAS DISTRIBUTED NEARLY $1.1 MILLION IN GRANTS TO APPROXIMATELY 100 LEGAL AID ORGANIZATIONS IN CALIFORNIA.
