Certification Programs for Community Managers

Earning a certification through CACM places you into an elite group of successful alumni. You can be proud that your professional education comes from an organization that sets the bar high with state-specific legal education, professional ethics and standards of practice, and stringent participation and assessment requirements.

STEP 1

Start with the Certified Community Association Manager (CCAM) certification, which builds a solid knowledge base through coursework and continuing education requirements.

STEP 2

Next, work toward a Specialty Certificate that focuses on a specific area of Community Management.

STEP 3

As the ultimate achievement, earn the Master of Community Association Management (MCAM) certification – the highest professional certification available for California community managers and a testament to your dedication to excellence.

CACM’s certification programs allow you to follow a clear path to career advancement.

Certified Community Association Manager (CCAM)

Step one for professional community managers is to meet the requirements for initial certification by completing coursework and demonstrating understanding of statespecific legal requirements, Community Management best practices and professional ethics through work experience and examinations.

EARNING THE CCAM

You can earn the CCAM in 3 steps:

1. Be employed as a community manager for six or more months immediately preceding the date of application.

2. Successfully complete the required coursework:

• The Basics of Association Management (BAM) Series (CMM101CMM102)

• California Law Series (CMM121-CMM124)

• Ethics for Community Managers (CMM130)

3. Submit the CCAM application with the application and maintenance fees within three years of completing your first course.

MAINTAINING THE CCAM

Once you’ve earned the CCAM certification, the recertification process allows you to pursue continuing education tailored to your experience level and education needs. To maintain this certification, you must recertify every three years, which entails the following:

• Earn at least 30 continuing education units (CEUs) every recertification period, inclusive of the following:

• Successfully complete at least one CACM Law Seminar every three years (8 CEUs)

• Successfully complete one CACM Ethics-related course, either CMM130 or LDR500 (prerequisites apply), every three years (4 CEUs)

• Keep your membership and/or annual certification maintenance fees current.

• Continue to comply with the CACM Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Practice.

• Submit a recertification application.

The second level in career development for community association managers, a Specialty Certificate demonstrates in-depth understanding of one of the management Specializations, including High Rise, Large Scale, Portfolio Management, and New Development.

EARNING A SPECIALTY CERTIFICATE

You can earn a Specialty Certificate in 4 steps:

1. Successfully complete the required coursework:

• Human Resource Management (LDR400)

• Risk Management (INS400, prerequisites apply)

• One of the following Specialization courses:

• High Rise Community Management (SPC400)

• Large Scale Community Management (SPC410)

• Portfolio Management (SPC430)

• New Development Community Management (SPC440)

2. Hold the CCAM certification in good standing for a minimum of two consecutive years at time of application.

3. Submit the Specialty Certificate application and processing fee within 36 months of the first required course you completed.

4. Upon acceptance, complete a written narrative demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the required courses.

Once your Specialty Certificate has been awarded, display it proudly in your office or include copies in board packets to promote your accomplishment. It remains valid from the date it’s awarded, and no continuing education or maintenance fees are required.

STEP 2

Master Of Community Association Management (MCAM)

The highest level of achievement in community association management, the MCAM certification is the ultimate professional designation available for California community association managers.

EARNING THE MCAM

You can earn the MCAM in 4 steps:

1. Successfully complete the required coursework:

• Fundamentals of Effective Governance (BDA300)

• Human Resource Management (LDR400)

• Ethics Mastery (LDR550)

• Advanced Insurance Principles (INS300)

• Risk Management (INS400)

• Strategic Financial Planning (FIN320)

2. Hold the CCAM certification in good standing for a minimum of six consecutive years at time of application.

3. Submit the MCAM application and processing fee within three years of the first required course you completed.

4. Upon acceptance, successfully complete a three-part comprehensive assessment comprised of a 100-question multiple choice exam, written solution-based essay and oral presentation.

MAINTAINING THE MCAM

Once you’ve earned the MCAM certification, we recommend you earn your CEUs by attending CACM events (vs. courses) in order to stay abreast of current industry issues. To maintain this certification, you must recertify every three years, which entails the following:

• Earn 20 CACM continuing education units (CEUs) every three years, inclusive of the following:

• Successfully complete at least one CACM Law Seminar every three years (8 CEUs)

• Successfully complete one CACM Ethics-related course, either CMM130 or LDR500 (prerequisites apply), every three years (4 CEUs)

• Keep your membership and/or annual certification maintenance fees current.

• Continue to comply with the CACM Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Practice.

• Submit a recertification application.

Community Association Financial Manager (CAFM)

As an accounting/financial professional serving the community association management industry, you now have a better way to show clients you understand the unique requirements of community associations. Developed specifically for professionals in accounting or financial roles who service community associations, the Community Association Financial Management (CAFM) certification is the only California-specific designation that clearly communicates your role and expertise than previously was possible.

EARNING THE CAFM

You can earn the CAFM in 3 steps:

1. Be employed at a community association or management company in an accounting/financial role full-time for a minimum of 12 months; or outside of the community management industry in an accounting/financial role for a minimum of three years.

2. Successfully complete the required coursework:

This series provides a broad overview of the CID industry and specific requirements to meet your community’s expectations, including: community association definitions and types; client relations and communications; volunteer roles and operations; governing document structure; financial management obligations; practical administration skills; and insurance practices and risk management.

The CACM Ethics Mastery course has been developed to provide members with an opportunity to engage in an in-depth analysis of authentic, ethical dilemmas faced by community managers throughout the state. Participants will work in collaborative groups, selecting case studies from a diverse portfolio vetted by the Ethics Case Study Editorial Committee. The CACM Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Practice serves as a resource to shape discussions and inform analysis of each case study.

Who should take this course?

• CCAMs, CAFMs and MCAMs, as part of their recertification requirement.

• Professionals who are interested in creating a framework for ethical decision making that can be applied to their business values, standards, policies and procedures.

CACM’s quarterly Law Journal provides members with easily understood interpretations of legal matters. Earn up to 4 CEUs per year by reading the informative articles in the Law Journal and completing a short exam for each issue.

Want to be even more involved in CACM legislative efforts? Consider joining the Legislative Committee, a task force organized for the advocacy of managers and management companies. Your efforts will play a major role in establishing and maintaining CACM’s position in Sacramento as the voice of reason on common interest development policy. MEMBERSHIP DUES

CACM manager membership dues are based on a calendar year and payable every January 1. Should you join in a month other than January, your annual membership dues will be prorated accordingly. The following January you will be billed for the full amount, which is due and payable on January 1. If you pay by credit card, you will be charged only the prorated amount. If you pay by check, any overpayment will be credited to your account to apply towards your renewal. Join online and the prorated amount will be automatically calculated for you. All members must have their dues paid in full to be considered a “member in good standing” and eligible for member discounts and benefits.

Online is the most expeditious way to register. Register through your member portal or from the calendar and pay with your credit card, debit card or e-check. Members must sign in to receive member discount.

CACM Courses are for community management professionals only.

Registration forms must be accompanied by payment. Those received without payment will NOT be processed.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Cancellations must be received in writing via mail or email (registration@cacm.org) prior to the course presentation. 90% of the course registration fee will be credited to the member’s account if the cancellation request is received at least two weeks prior to the course date. 50% will be credited to the member’s account if the cancellation request is received less than two weeks.

Please Note: The applied credit must be used within 1 calendar year from the date it is issued.

COURSE TRANSFER POLICY

In the event a member has a conflict with an original course registration date, the registration for that course may be transferred to a future date for a $40 transfer fee. In addition, course registrations can only be transferred one time, and they must be done within the same calendar year.

NO SHOW FEE

It is the Member’s responsibility to communicate with the CACM Education Team prior to the start of first course session should that member be unable to attend class. Failure to do so is considered a “no show” and will result in a $50 “no show” fee.

EXAM RETAKE

In the event a member does not pass a required certification exam, the course exam must be retaken. A $40 retake fee will be charged. The retake must be completed within 1 calendar month of notification that the retake is needed. Only 1 retake opportunity may be exercised by a member before re-enrollment in the course will be required.

Please Note: In the unlikely event that this retake is not deemed as passing, the member will be required to retake the course and an additional registration fee will be incurred.
