WHITE WATER GOLD

THE ART & SCIENCE OF PROFITABLE WHITEWATER

Since 2003, Calibre's Whitewater Team has been dedicated to perfecting the art and science of profitable whitewater experiences. Our deep-rooted passion for adventure and commitment to excellence have driven us to refine every aspect of our operations, ensuring unforgettable moments for our guests while maximizing the potential for success.

Our defining laboratory has been the design and operation of the US National Whitewater Center, which was uniquely crafted for community adventure and has continued to flourish since its inception in 2006. Initially, the project faced challenges despite its popular design. Observation showed that many visitors arrived with the intention to observe and left without participating in the wide array of activities or enjoying the venue's dining options. The center, hailed as an Olympic Training site, inadvertently deterred some guests who assumed they could not engage in elite sports.

Scan to learn more about profitable whitewater.

In response, the venue transformed its operations by offering an all-day pass that provided access to all activities, creating an inclusive environment for all guests. This strategic change led to the rapid expansion of secondary activities, including climbing, adventure courses, and flatwater paddling. The venue soon recognized its broader potential—not merely a park, but an events center—and began marketing itself as the go-to location for engaging events such as Tough Mudder, Color Run, mountain biking competitions, climbing contests, paddling events, and more. Currently, the venue hosts its signature event, Tuck Fest, which attracts over 60,000 attendees in a single weekend.

These transformative steps at the whitewater center have profoundly influenced Calibre’s approach to design and have enriched our methodology since 2009. Our design process encompasses an event overlay, ensuring we can

seamlessly accommodate large gatherings while maximizing the venue's potential to host complementary activities such as zipline, ropes courses, and more. Our design team actively participates in theme park industry conferences, allowing us to glean insights on optimizing design, point-of-sale strategies, marketing, and events to enhance spending and profitability. We deliberately craft our venues to encourage guests who come for one activity to extend their stay for a meal, concert, festival, or a full day of adventure and exploration.

Calibre stands as the global leader in profitable design for whitewater parks and has recently been invited to share our expertise at the Paddlesports Show in Strasbourg, France. Scan the barcode on the left to watch the presentation.

PHYSICAL MODELING

TESTING THE WATERS

Calibre has a long-standing partnership with the Czech Technical University in Prague to create physical models that accurately predict future flow conditions in our channels. Using Froude scaling, a hydraulic scaling factor, these models allow us to design and fine-tune hydraulic features at scale, ensuring minimal adjustments are needed upon completion. The models simulate channel velocities, eddies, surges, waves, holes, and other whitewater features, ensuring the final product meets the needs of paddlers, from Olympic athletes to beginners.

For example, the hydraulic model created for the London 2012 Olympic Venue used nearly 1,300 scaled RapidBlocs—the adjustable tuning system utilized for those games. Once built, tuning the constructed full-size whitewater channel required the movement of only 13 RapidBlocs to achieve the International Canoe Federation sign-off on the design. Comparisons between the model and actual channels revealed the model to be a highly accurate predictor of the final product, including the smallest details of hydraulics, waves, eddies, and drops.

Though London was the first major channel system to employ physical modeling, the International Canoe Federation has since adopted it as the standard. Modeling conducted at the Czech Technical University has been used to design every major channel system since, including those in Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Oklahoma City, and Montgomery.

RAPID BLOCS

ADJUSTABLE OBSTACLE SYSTEMS

One of the most defining features of the last five Olympics has been the RapidBlocs Obstacle System created by Calibre's Whitewater Team. This system, which has defined the International Canoe Federation’s current requirements for having a fully adjustable obstacle system on Olympic Standard Courses, sprung from the requirement CalibreS2O was given for the design of the 2012 Olympic Venue in London: “The project shall remain state-of-the-art 10 years into the future.”

This requirement was a daunting one. In the short time since the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia, the sport had changed significantly: Slalom courses were shorter, with tighter and more difficult maneuvers. The classes had

changed with C-2 slated to be removed from the Olympic docket. Outside of slalom, other changes were evident as well. Freestyle had innovated aerial maneuvers, river surfing had become prevalent, and, due to our Whitewater Team's own innovations, whitewater parks were now becoming swift-water rescue training facilities as well.

Lead designer Scott Shipley came up with an innovative solution to this challenge—creating a whitewater park that can evolve with the sport—make the channel changeable. The RapidBloc system, which allows changes to the channel system with the turn of a wrench, can literally evolve the system in an afternoon to, for example, make the river easier for rafters; create dangerous features for swiftwater rescue training that can be removed at the end of the day; or modify the river to make the next season even more exciting than the

last. The system has been used on rivers around the globe and has recently been retrofitted into existing channels, such as the historic whitewater parks in Prague and Bratislava.

Adjustable obstacle systems have become so valuable to the sport that the International Canoe Federation not only requires it on competition channels, but, during the homologation process, works with the venue owners to tune it for elite competition. Twenty years after its invention the system continues to define state-of-the-art for paddlesports.

Based on feedback from multiple users around the globe. RapidBlocs is developing a rock-realistic lid in 2025 to present a natural river environment above the water's surface.

Tuning the 2012 Olympic Channel with the ICF Slalom Director 02

USERBASED DESIGN

WHITEWATER FOR EVERYONE

The US National Whitewater Center was, in itself, an invention. At the time it was built, every other pumped whitewater park in the world had been designed and paid for by the Olympic Games. These projects had been narrowly focused on delivering the Games, and the left-over channel had been left to the local community to own and operate. These projects often hosted rafting but struggled to attract and provide for significant audiences and often struggled with economic feasibility. At the USNWC, the challenge of designing and building a park for the community instead of solely the top 1% was daunting.

The challenge was given to Scott Shipley, a former Olympic Kayaker whose focus in graduate school at Georgia Tech was design theory—specifically focused on incorporating input

from many different stakeholders into a specific design. This was the design team's approach—rather than focusing on the best kayakers in the world, Scott focused on all the stakeholders he could identify. This involved reaching out to a disparate set of user groups, including swiftwater rescue specialists at American Whitewater; Girls at Play, a group run by Anna Levesque and focused on empowering women in paddlesports; The Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC), one of the nations leading rafting and instructional programs for paddlesports, and a host of others including design for maintenance, design for marketing and so much more.

The input provided by these groups helped design a whitewater center that has defined profitable whitewater parks for the last twenty years. The input given by the NOC

helped create an efficient and attractive rafting experience and also defined the layout of the instructional area at the upstream portion of the course. NOC also helped shape Calibre’s understanding and design of profitable experiences on and off the water. Our work with Charlie Walbridge defined the channel's swift-water rescue portion. It led to a second industry for Calibre around designing swiftwater rescue training centers for first responders. Input from Girls at Play redefined how we design for learning and growth. In a sport often fueled by bravado and competition, the input we've received has led to the design of whitewater for people of all skill levels.

RIVERSPORT RAPIDS OKLAHOMA CITY, OK

Riversport Rapids Whitewater Center combines world-class recreational and competitive whitewater experiences, uniquely tailored for Oklahoma City. Riversport has been chosen for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Over the next four years, Riversport Rapids will become the focal point for the world of whitewater sport. The whitewater park, part of the larger Boathouse District in Oklahoma City, will host the 2026 World Championships and 2028 Olympic Games. The venue features both a competition and recreational channel and allows for rafting, kayaking, funyaking, and tubing. The two channels also combine to create a freestyle venue located within viewing distance of the restaurant and outdoor activity area.

Ideally located at the crossroads of two major highways, Riversport Rapids is strategically positioned within the city, just a short water taxi or river walk from Bricktown and Downtown OKC. As project lead, Calibre’s Whitewater Team worked with the city, stakeholders, and subcontractors throughout the planning and design process to create a facility unique to the Western United States. The Whitewater Center incorporates the technology of a world-class venue while blending seamlessly into the Boathouse District Master Plan and Oklahoma City’s urban landscape.

Riversport Rapids Whitewater Center is the designated training center for Oklahoma State University’s Homeland Security degree program. The site features a dedicated swiftwater rescue training area designed for vehicle rescue, self-rescue, rescue from structures, and other scenarios.

The swiftwater rescue training area enables rescuers to practice in calm water, moving water, and class III/IV whitewater. The venue supports a variety of practice scenarios, from open swimming and live bait rescues to aerial helicopter rescues. The site also includes dryland practice space, a catered restaurant, and indoor conference and classroom facilities.

VLNA ŠTVANICE PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

The Štvanice wave, located on an urban island in the heart of Prague, is part of the Waves of Štvanice (Vlny Štvanice) project. Situated just below the Hilton Hotel, this medium-power wave operates year-round and serves as the first obstacle of the slalom course, offering a versatile experience for riders of all skill levels. With a clean face and a width of 7.5 meters, the wave allows for a wide range of tricks typically performed in river surfing. It is particularly beginner-friendly, providing easy access and a relatively weak current after falling, which makes it ideal for newcomers to the sport.

Despite its beginner accessibility, the flow of the Vltava River—which feeds the wave—can sometimes be very powerful due to rainfall or the interaction with nearby locks and the power station. This results in the wave’s size and character changing continuously, even within a single session. However, when the flow conditions are optimal, the Štvanice wave is considered one of the best in the world, offering an exciting challenge for beginner to experienced riders.

The wave’s location on Štvanice Island adds a unique feature to the experience: it is accessible only by water, requiring visitors to paddle around locks and walk along a dam to reach the surf spot. This exclusivity contributes to a strong, communityfocused atmosphere where riders are free from distractions. Spectators can cheer from the nearby bridge or elevated spots across the river, further enhancing the intimate, club-like vibe that has naturally developed around this iconic Prague surf spot.

Lee Valley Whitewater Centre, the 2012 Olympic Venue, was cited by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) as the best use of design modeling, and the easiest course to tune to an Olympic Standard.

LEE VALLEY WHITEWATER CENTRE

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM

The Lee Valley Whitewater Centre, 2012 Olympic Venue, is praised as the best designed and most adaptable course, featuring the innovative RapidBlocs obstacle system for advanced whitewater competition.

Lee Valley Whitewater Centre, the 2012 Olympic Venue, was cited by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) as the best use of design modeling, and the easiest course to tune to an Olympic Standard. Calibre and EPDUK were commissioned to complete the design for this Olympic Venue on a rush basis. Within four months of receiving authority to proceed, our team reviewed all pertinent materials, recreated the entire drawing set, created both computer and physical models, and completed design documents for what was, at the time, the most modern whitewater park in the world.

The Calibre and EPDUK team continued to work with the Client to implement the design for construction, including construction oversight and project commissioning. The completed project was approved by the ICF, who cited the modeling and design as the most advanced and predictive ever used for a whitewater park.

The Lee Valley Whitewater Centre has been a tremendous success with athletes, who reference its challenging yet predictive flows as ideal for competition. The athletes and coaches also applaud the RapidBlocs moveable obstacle system developed for this course. The movable obstacle system is a tremendous step forward from previous systems and is the future of whitewater slalom channels.

SWIFT WATER RESCUE TRAINING

PROTECTING COMMUNITIES THROUGH WHITEWATER

Before the design of the US National Whitewater Center, Swiftwater Rescue Training was done entirely on natural rivers and was often cited as being as dangerous as the rescues themselves. Given the level of danger, training was typically done at low water and limited to the basics of ropes, wading, self-rescue, and boat work.

The design of the US National Whitewater Center started a change in the industry that has now grown into Swiftwater rescue training centers complete with real-life training scenarios such as vehicles in the water, floodable villages, low-head dam rescues (which are exceptionally dangerous), and nighttime swiftwater rescue training—something that had never been attempted before.

Scan to see our Swiftwater Rescue Facilities in action.

The pathway to these swiftwater rescue training centers was a long one. It began with Calibre's Whitewater Team inviting a swiftwater rescue expert to specify a part of the channel system in Charlotte. This area was designed for paddling swiftwater rescue and, in the first couple of years of operation, was limited to this use. However, when a local fire department discovered the facility, the venue began to host thousands of first responders.

This was a success for many, but Calibre's Whitewater Team contacted these first responders and began to evolve the design. Our project in Teesside, England, was the first to allow a vehicle in the water—something that was cited by our contacts: “80% of what we do is rescue people who drove into the water.” This project was also the first to use

the RapidBlocs Obstacle system to create unique training scenarios such as low-head dam training, strainers, etc. Our team continued to evolve the designs in London, Riversport Rapids, and other venues and are now designing purpose-built facilities with traditional swiftwater training opportunities, but also a flooded village that mimics urban rescue with such features as saw-through roofs to rescue people trapped in the attic, a custom-designed low-head dam, searchable spaces, high-axle vehicle (driving) training, motorized and unmotorized boat training and so much more. The venue features a unique feature where every light pole and hazardous feature has a cut-off mushroom switch that turns off every pump in the facility and turns on every light, making these the only venues that do day-and-night swiftwater rescue training.
