PGA HOPE
For Veterans like James Davenport, golf isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifeline. After struggling to find his path post-service, he discovered PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), a PGA of America program dedicated to using golf as a tool for healing. PGA HOPE offers complimentary six-week programs, led by PGA and LPGA Professionals. It provides veterans and active-duty Military with a supportive community, a renewed sense of purpose, and a way to reconnect with themselves and others.
Since 2023, over 1,100 Veterans in Southern California have graduated from PGA HOPE, with even more expected in 2025 as the program expands rapidly under the leadership of James and the Southern California PGA Section. Every donation helps fund instruction, equipment, and course access, ensuring that those who served our country can continue to thrive—one swing at a time.
Here’s the story of Southern California PGA Staff member, and PGA Associate James Davenport’s journey and the impact of PGA HOPE.
Tell us what motivated you to get involved in golf?
I have been motivated by the PGA HOPE Program since 2016 when I watched a Golf Channel special featuring Marine Corps Veteran Chris Nowak discussing PGA Professionals giving free golf lessons to Veterans. From that moment, I was committed to serving Veterans as a PGA Professional.
Experiencing PGA HOPE at Coronado Golf Course came at a crucial time—I was struggling to break into the golf industry and constantly hitting roadblocks. I was ready to give up, lost in the process. As a 100% disabled Veteran, I battle anxiety, depression, and PTSD, but PGA HOPE became an outlet. Driving from Temecula to Coronado every Sunday was the highlight of my week, helping me shift my focus to the positives.
How has PGA HOPE impacted you?
It gave me renewed purpose after retiring the uniform. It allows me to continue serving—both PGA Members and the Veterans I teach. Managing a Veteran Program for the PGA of America is truly a dream come true.
How did this experience inspire you to start the PGA Membership Program?

From the first moment I learned about PGA HOPE, I knew I was going to become a PGA Professional. I looked at my Wife as we were watching the special with Chris and the words that came out of my mouth would change our lives forever. “That’s what we’re gonna do, go to the golf school in Temecula, get an education and join the PGA and teach Veterans!” We did exactly that. My Wife and I just love the game and there is nothing else I’d rather do than be outside in the sun and talk golf with people that I know need us.
James Davenport’s journey is just one example of how PGA HOPE is transforming the lives of Veterans through the game of golf. Another instance of how this program continues to provide healing, purpose, and community to those who have served. This life-changing initiative is primarily funded through donations, with just $330 covering six weeks of PGA Professionalled instruction, a graduation ceremony, and an oncourse experience for a Veteran. Beyond teaching golf, PGA HOPE is a powerful tool in helping Veterans overcome everyday challenges like PTSD and depression by providing a supportive community and a renewed sense of purpose. Every contribution from readers like you helps more Veterans find hope, healing, and connection through golf.
You can make a difference. Donate today at SCPGAFoundation.com, volunteer your time, or spread the word. To learn more or get involved, contact James Davenport at jdavenport@pgahq.com.

REMEMBERING GOLF INSTRUCTION ICON AND INVENTOR DAVE PELZ (1939–2025)

When things are going really well, some people thank God. Some people thank their lucky stars. If you enjoy golf, though, and how it’s played today, there’s a good chance you should be thanking Dave Pelz.
It’s unlikely golf has ever had a figure more uncannily ahead of his time - or indelibly influential - than the towering six-foot-five NASA physicist who turned his professional focus to tireless golf research in the mid-1970s.
His first foray in the golf arena was designing putters, then full sets of Dave Pelz Featherlite clubs. He was the first to patent the concept of frequency matched shafts and develop lighter, easier-to-swing clubs to help more players swing more efficiently. His putters – the Teacher and the Three-Ball – were designed to promote two elements that would become non-negotiable tenets of Dave’s teaching philosophy – instant feedback and unmissable alignment

cues. When Callaway Golf later licensed the patent for Dave’s ThreeBall putter, the resulting design, the Odyssey 2-Ball – a truly Pelzian alignment-ingraining marvel – went on to become one of the best-selling golf club designs in history.
Pelz’s passion was teaching, passing on the fruits of his voluminous research for the sole purpose of making the masses understand the game better, so they could score better and have more fun. Unbelievably, his research on the game actually benefited pros before it ever reached us rank-and-file weekend warriors. Pelz convinced Tom Kite to put the firstever 60-degree wedge in play on the PGA TOUR and Kite dominated the money list for a good chunk of the 1980s. Kite’s 1992 U.S. Open win at Pebble Beach was just one of the 21 major championships Pelz’s professional students - including Phil Mickelson, Payne Stewart, Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, Steve Elkington,
and Patrick Reed – would claim.
Before Pelz’s data, golfers didn’t definitively understand the importance of the short game and putting in terms of the shots we lose to par (It’s 80 percent for anyone who can keep their tee shots reasonably in play. Kind of a big deal.). People practice differently on purposebuilt facilities, use better equipment, appreciate golf data and work on their games with feedback and learning aids, all because one guy somehow found a calling higher than launching satellites into orbit for NASA during the peak of the Space Race. The Pelz Effect touches anyone who plays the game.
His Dave Pelz Scoring Game Schools have reached hundreds of thousands of golfers, along with bestselling books and his long-running shows on Golf Channel that made him a household figure.
Pelz, who passed away at the age of 85 on March 23, was endlessly curious and unstoppably passionate about researching the game. He was PGA TOUR Shotlink long before it existed. For decades, he was the industry’s expert source on almost everything. Putting, wedge play, course management, recovery shots, backspin, anchoring, moment of inertia, coefficient of restitution. It’s virtually endless what one man understood deeply enough to help the masses understand so simply. That was his gift.
The lessons in bestsellers Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible and Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible will long outlive the gentle wise man’s 85 years because Pelz never published – or even suggested anything on the practice green – that he had not already proven using the Scientific Method.
He famously said “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.” In life, Dave Pelz practiced generosity and an unwavering commitment to learning and teaching. In the lessons he left us is where you’ll find that permanence. Rest well, DP.
DAVE PELZ

OKLAHOMA’S SHANGRI-LA RESORT KEEPS IMPROVING AND TURNING MORE HEADS SHANGRI-LA FOUND
Those of us who confine our visions of an immersive vacation escape to the island, mountain or desert locales owe it to ourselves to take a chance on the underrated destinations like Shangri-La Resort, in Northeastern Oklahoma. Nestled along the shores of vast Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, in a nook called Monkey Island, this hidden gem fits well with America’s next new emerging crop of great golf destinations.
For 15 years, owner Eddy Gibbs has been breathing new life and vision into this lush lakefront find, first opened in 1969, and has transformed the property into a must-visit vacation attraction for golfers, lake lovers, and fun seekers from anywhere in the country. The setting is serene and rapturous with the Grand Lake all around, and now with Gibbs’ commitment and project-after-project to make Shangri-La a premier resort destination, this place is ready for its
close-up and droves of bookings for buddies’ trips, bachelorette parties, weddings, family getaways and semilarge business groups.
The new runaway sensation at Shangri-La for golf-loving guests has been the dazzling par-54 short course, The Battlefield. This rare beauty has transformed Shangri-La one of the few golf resorts offering 45 holes to members, guests and the general public in a lakefront setting. Built in honor of WWII veterans, each hole at The Battlefield is named after an Oklahoma WWII hero.
The Tom Clark and Kevin Atkinson-designed, 3,000-yard Battlefield layout was constructed on pristine land that features more than 100 feet of elevation change across its acreage. This short course also has a 165-yard warm-up area and 10,000-square-foot putting green, and there’s also a practice range and short-game facility at the
main clubhouse. The Battlefield sets new standards in short course experiences.
This enjoyable, accessible par54 course which features holes from 110 to 245 yards, joins the acclaimed 27 championship holes at Shangri-La, the Legends, Heritage and Champions courses (framed elegantly on the shores of the expansive Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees) to present an extraordinary 45-hole golfer’s paradise that buddies’ trip groups and golf aficionados from all over the country will want to add to their bucket list. Golfweek includes the course among America’s “Best Top 25 Public-Access Short, Par-3 and Non-Traditional Courses.”
Surrounded by the waters of Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees on three sides, the revered 27-hole championship Shangri-La golf course meanders through rolling parkland landscapes with elevated Bentgrass greens and clever bunkering along with more open, flowing fairways accented by ponds, streams and the breathtaking lakefront. Frequently ranked among the state’s Top Five golf courses – ShangriLa’s 27 holes and is made up of the Legends, Champions, and Heritage nines. The course challenges golfers of any skill level, with five tee boxes on each hole.

The signature hole is Legends Nine, which features two separate greens complexes separated by a dramatic and spectacular waterfall. Known as “The Mickey Mantle Hole,” it’s named after the New York Yankees legend who hosted his Mickey Mantle Golf Classic charity tournament at Shangri-La from 1991 until his death in 1995. Mickey once holed an albatross on the challenging par five. The third hole on the Champions Course plays right along the edge of the vast lake and is one of the most dramatic holes on the property. In all, the golf experience here is satisfying and cerebral with plentiful natural beauty.
Off the course, resort guest enjoy 119room resort hotel, an indoor pool, 6,500

square-foot outdoor resort pool with splash pad and tanning ledge, luxury spa, full-service marina on gleaming, 46,500-acre Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees, and six distinct dining and cocktails venues culminate in an unforgettable getaway for golfers, families, groups, corporate and association retreats, and weddings.
The Anchor, six-acre indoor/a outdoor activity park has basketball, tennis, pickleball, cornhole, and a unique “Mini-Fenway” WIFFLE®Ball park, as well as a catch-and-release fishing pond for children under 12. The Anchor’s 11,000 square-foot indoor space offers traditional arcade games plus virtual reality games, a LaserShot shooting simulator, and Trackman Golf simulators.
A popular spot for drinks and dining, the Sports Bar at The Anchor features dozens of sports screens including two giant video walls, along with ping-pong, pool, shuffleboard, darts, and foosball.
Shangri-La offers various dining experiences, ranging from the fine dining of The Summit Restaurant in the main clubhouse, to a lakeside cafe offering seasonal al fresco dining and cocktails at Shangri-La Marina. Doc’s Bar & Grill, in the hotel, offers food service for all three meals, 365 days a year. The Canteen
at The Battlefield Clubhouse and the Pool Bar at the resort pool also offer food and beverage service. The staff is personable and fun – and many are solid karaoke singers. They make the stay extra special.
The resort’s full-service marina offers permanent rental slips and courtesy docks. Boat and personal watercraft rentals are available, along with yacht charters and
Oklahoma’s only parasailing adventures.
If a day of golf, followed by an evening of boating and great food and maybe a little karaoke thrown in sounds like the perfect getaway, you’re starting to see why ShangriLa is now on the map of essential golf resorts to include in your upcoming travel planning. Learn more at www.shangrilaok.com.

OMNI LA COSTA NORTH COURSE IS FANTASTIC
By DANIEL WOODS CARLSBAD, CA
– I recently had the chance to play the Omni La Costa North Course which reopened in June of last year after a complete renovation by renowned architect Gil Hanse.
The experience was fabulous. Arriving on the property you are greeted with tremendous views of the resort and the nearby coast. Walking to the pro shop you pass an arcade room plus a great looking pool with a water slide that faces towards the Omni La Costa’s two golf courses. Prior to teeing off we went to the practice area, which is a Beau Welling redesign with an extended driving range and large putting green. The practice facility, with a new state-of-the-art irrigation
sys-
tem, also offers an enlarged short game area giving both the freedom and space to adequately prepare for your round.
After warming up on the driving range we went to the large practice putting green that provides foreknowledge of the challenge in front of you as the round develops.
Heading to the North Course first tee we were ready and excited and decided to play from the II tees, a sufficiently long test at 6,703 yards and it proved to be a good choice.
Omni La Costa’s North Course presents a serious challenge to golfers of every skill level with the option to play from six different sets of tees - playing from 4,502 to 7,500 yards. The NCAA Division 1 Championship through 2028 are set to take place on
the I tees as one would expect.
The first hole on the North Course is the shortest par-4 on the front nine featuring an elevated green providing an early view of both the North and South Courses and while each hole presents its own vista the tee box of the seventh hole is the highest vantage point of the golf course.
It was a good way to give me a true sense of the course’s beauty along with the renovation completed last summer. The North Course was awarded the third best renovation in 2024 by Golf Digest and Sports Illustrated named it the Best Resort Golf Course Renovation. Golf.com also says it is in the Top 100 Courses You Can Play listing.
The first nine went by too quickly but we were happy to find a real

treat at the halfway house, complimentary burritos with home-made salsa and they were delicious.
Driving from Orange County was smooth and easy as Interstate 5 is close by, and should it be important the McClellan-Palomar Airport is just north with direct flights available. Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and they are offering discount packages.
The North Course is truly exceptional and is a great challenge to anyone’s golf game. On top of that, being able to play the same course as golf legends like Gary Player, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson is truly an amazing experience, something I think every golfer would appreciate.

THE VOLCANO GOLF COURSE 18 HOLES ON A VOLCANO RIM
By PATE CLARSON
Hawai‘i Island, often referred to as the “Big Island,” is 4,028 square miles and is one of the most ecologically diverse places on earth. A two-hour drive will cover four of the five world’s major climate zones and eight of the 13 sub-zones.
If the song, “Heaven is a place on Earth” just popped into your mind, we’d understand.
Renowned for the black sand beaches, dozens of waterfalls, magnificent mountains, lush landscapes, rare wildlife and volcanoes, Hawai‘i Island is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts including those of us who play golf.
The island is home to an impressive array of golf and none is more impressive than Volcano Golf Course located on the volcanic crater rim of Kilauea.
Volcano offers a unique and memorable experience from the resort courses found on the island’s coast. At over 4,000 feet this 18-hole, par72 layout has cooler temperatures and breezes for a refreshing, crisp climate rather than the hot tropical temps at sea level.
They proudly claim to be the first golf course built on Hawai‘i Island
with three holes built in 1921 and nine holes a year later. In 1939, it was determined that three of the nine holes were located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park so they were returned to protected parkland but in 1946 those three holes were rebuilt on a new terrain with nine more holes subsequently added.
Today, what really sets Volcano GC apart from other courses are the breathtaking, panoramic views of Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and its proximity to Kilauea, the active volcano that has shaped the island for centuries. While live lava may not be visible during every round, geothermal features, including steam vents and sulfurous fumaroles offer players a distinct, one-of-a-kind thrill from a safe distance.
Equally as impressive, Volcano GC’s lush fairways are lined with towering Cook Pines and the songs of native birds plus scents of tropical flowers can be enjoyed every round. The merger of thought-provoking golf holes and a peaceful setting provides long-lasting memories.
In nearby Volcano Village the Kīlauea Lodge & Restaurant is a beautiful, cozy inn in an idyllic loca-
tion. The rooms are filled with local art, stained glass windows, fireplaces and other relaxing touches while the award-winning dining room serves delicious island-infused cuisine.
Kīlauea Lodge offers a stay-andplay package beginning at $287 per person, per night tax included. Packages include three nights at Kīlauea Lodge, two rounds of golf for each player at Volcano Golf Course, use of a new E-Z-GO golf cart, a bag of range balls, and an AVIS full-size rental car.
More California residents visit Hawai‘i than from any other state and Volcano GC is only a 45-minute drive from Hilo (ITO) International Airport or you can opt for more a scenic two-hour drive from Kona (KOA) International along the coast or across the island via Saddle Road, which tops out at 6,765 ft. above sea level.
For those who value rich cultural immersions and memories that will last a lifetime, Volcano Golf Course should be on your short-list. Learn more about Volcano Golf Course, visit www. volcanogc.com. Stay-andplay rates may be found at www. troongolfvacations.com/hawaii-golfpackages/kilauea-stay-play-package

A BREAKTHROUGH WIN BRIAN CAMPBELL

By GARRETT JOHNSTON
Brian Campbell’s life changed drastically after his first PGA Tour win at the Mexico Open the end of February.
The ten-year career of this 32-year-old Newport Beach native has shown grit and determination, but also at times doubt such as during second stage of the 2023 Q-school Campbell almost quit completely.
“It was really low for me. I was dealing with an injury in my left thumb and not having status then, so I had to go back to first stage,” Campbell told me.
After getting through first stage it was in the second stage things started to go sideways. “I had a blow up hole and made a quad, I thought I was out of it’ I went out the next day and shot 8-under and got myself right back in it and I was like, ‘well, I guess we’re playing more golf.”
“This game’s crazy and I shoutout to the people who are grinding out there. Never give up. It’s always so close. A lot closer than you think it might be.”
Campbell has played mainly on the Korn Ferry Tour and had 28 starts on the PGA Tour before the Mexico Open triumph.
The victory, at the Vidanta World course in Vidanta Vallarta, came after a lucky break on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff against Aldrich Potgieter. Campbell’s drive received a fortunate bounce off a stand of bamboo lining the course that kicked the ball back into play and from there he was able to make a birdie for the win.

BRIAN

In addition to the $1.26 million first prize Campbell gets Tour membership for two more years, an invitation to his first Masters, and a place in the Tour’s elite signature events so that his schedule for the rest of the year is filled with playing opportunities.
“Anytime I am in contention and come out on top, it just gives me loads of confidence in what I’ve been doing. It gave me a lot of belief. There’s always going to be tough days out there but I think looking back on the good days is just really going to help me look forward and trust.”
The “bamboo bounce” and the video of Campbell going back to
toast them went viral and he jokingly said, “I need to grow some bamboo in my backyard because I’ve got to pay homage to that for sure.”
Regular golfers may find a comparison between the average driving distances for Potgieter and Campbell instrucitve. The burly South African Potgieter is number one on the PGA Tour, whereas Campbell ranks 188th with a jaw-dropping difference of almost 46 yards. The obvious lesson being golf is a game of how many not how.
Campbell captured the moment in Mexico and knew life had changed especially when after the final round he had 590 text messages waiting for him plus a congratulatory voicemail
from PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan.
Two weeks later during the Bay Hill Invitational Campbell received his coveted Masters invitation, and he gave the opportunity to open the envelope to his father Don.
“I know that was a special moment for him and for me as well and for just our family as a whole,” Campbell reflected. “We used to watch the Masters all the time growing up. I think it was a bit in the distance like ‘maybe we’ll be there one day, I hope we’ll be there one day’.”
That dream came together, and Campbell got to play in the Masters where he made the cut and finished tied for 32nd.

NEW GOLF GEAR FOR SPRING
By ED TRAVIS
Theweather is warmer, the U.S. Open is just around the corner and there’s lots of daylight so we can get out on the course after work…it must be spring. Many, including the staff of California Golf + Travel, think this is the best time of the year, a time of renewal for nature and our golf games. Part of that renewal can be new equipment, and we have a few product ideas to help get your golf year off to a great start.
Cleveland Golf RTZ Wedges
Cleveland’s RTZ wedges use a new Z-Alloy steel which is 10% softer than that used in the previous RTX6 model. Not only is it softer and not as dense but it allowed engineers to put lighter material in the heel and hosel which moved the center of gravity closer to the center of the face for more precise contact. Four sole grinds and two finishes available $170 or Tour Rack (raw) finish $190
Srixon ZXi Irons
There are three new ZXi models: ZXi4 for recreational players, the ZXi5 a distance model for better players and the ZXi7 for better players. All three have forged heads with the ZXi5 and ZXi4 model using Srixon’s third generation MainFrame, a design of grooves, channels and notches milled into the back of the head producing a variable thickness behind the face. Set of seven irons $1300

Titleist Pro V1 & Pro V1x for 2025

Bettinardi Antidote SB2 Putter
Zero torque putters are all the rage right now and Bettinardi as usual is leading the pack with the Antidote SB2 model. It is a full-sized mallet style and the Simply Balanced location of the shaft in relation to the center of gravity maintains a square face no matter what swing path is used. The body is high grade aluminum and the stainless-steel face is milled for a soft feel at impact. Right or left-handed, counterbalance option. $450

The most played ball brand has a reformulated core and a redo of the casing layer to lower spin off the tee which maximizes distance while allowing the short scoring clubs to generate more spin. The Pro V1 continues to be a threepiece urethane cover ball with a mid-trajectory and the Pro V1x four-piece construction and a firmer feel and higher spin of the mid and short irons. $55 dozen, same as 2023 models

Shot Scope G6 GPS Watch
The G6 GPS Watch is preloaded with 36,000 courses all with full hole maps and there is no monthly software subscription–all updates are no cost plus it’s ready to use right out of the box…no setup. The color screen is easily readable even in direct sunlight and shows front, middle, back yardage as well as layups, hazards and dogleg distances. At $180 the G6 is a pocketbook-friendly but sophisticated solution.

IT ALL STARTS FROM THE SET-UP
By JOHN BURCKLE

Adam Scott and Rory Mclrory have two of the best swings in golf. Just watching them swing the the club is a delight for all golfers to watch. Their swings are so effortless and yet create so much power. We can dream but most of us wont be able to swing like these two, but we can learn a lot from both of their swings.
The first and most important is posture. Adam and Rory have two of the best set ups in golf. They are so athletic from the start. Both have just the right amount of spine tilt and knee flex. Their arms hang down from their shoulders with perfect spacing between the hands and body. Shoulders and feet parallel to the target. Both ready to go!
Now look how they both take the club away from the ball. As in most top players they keep the club head in front of their hands. This so important in getting the club shaft on the proper swing plane. It’s called setting the club. If you want to have a good transition from backswing to downswing the set is everything.

SETTING THE CLUB

In these next set of photos we look further into the backswing setting of the club. Adam is right on plane where Rory is a little steeper with the shaft. Almost all top professionals will be on plane at this point or slightly steeper to the plane line. We never want the club going back inside or under the plane as that can cause problems in the transition to the downswing.
The completion of the backswing is so good for these two. Because of Adams fantastic posture at address and correct setting of his club on the take-

TOP OF BACKSWING

away he gets the club in a picture perfect position. Rory at the top gets the club in a little different position because his takeaway is slightly steeper than Adam’s and he makes a bigger shoulder turn than Adam.
Remember it all starts with a proper setup. From there you to can learn to get the club on plane with the correct setting of the club just like Adam and Rory.
