LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The following message is intended to help all of us better understand the role of Indigenous land acknowledgements. It was compiled by Spirit River Striped Wolf, Evans Yellow Old Woman, and Michelle Robinson, with contributions from other board members of VOICES. VOICES is Calgary’s Coalition of Two-Spirit & Racialized LGBTQIA+. Recognizing the land is an Indigenous protocol; it is an expression of gratitude and appreciation, as well as a way of honouring the First Nations peoples who have been living and working on the land since time immemorial. It is important to understand the longstanding history that brought you to reside on the land, and to seek understanding about your place within that history. Land acknowledgements do not exist in a past tense, or historical context: colonialism is a current ongoing process, and we need to build mindfulness of our present participation. The Blackfoot, Dene and Stoney people have a history with this land that includes languages, culture, traditions, and civil laws that goes back 152 years, predating colonization, including the establishment of both Alberta and Canada. Moh’kinsstis (point to elbow) is the Blackfoot name for Calgary or Klincho-tinay-indihay, in Sahtu Dene’s ancestral language for Calgary, meaning “many horse town,” with many other names in the

different Indigenous languages. Calgary is on the traditional lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy which consists of Piikani, Siksika, Kainai in Canada, and with the Blackfeet Nation south of the imposed Canada-US border. In 1877, Treaty 7 was signed with the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuut’ina, and Stoney Nations of the Chiniki, Wesley and Bearspaw Nations. Calgary is also home of Mètis, Inuit and First Nations, status & non from all across Turtle Island. We are Treaty people. With that Treaty comes the responsibility of equality. The Canadian Government assumed the role from Crown on behalf of the people of Canada, new or as old as 152 years. With the historical and present day policies imposed on Indigenous Peoples’, there are many reports that have solutions for that equality. As Treaty partners, we ask you see your role in promoting the reports and equality. For more on land acknowledgement, check out the Calgary Foundation’s videos on the subject. Other reports and documents to familiarize with would include, but are not exclusive to, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples’, The National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples’ and the multiple reports on justice and child welfare reform as well as books, documentaries and podcasts on these subjects. Let’s end oppression together Calgary as Treaty partners. The bare minimum we can start with are land acknowledgements.

The film is a first-hand account of the frontlines of LGBTQ2+ activism at a time when the right to be out in Alberta was not legally protected, visible or developed. Spanning stories from 1960-present day, this feature length documentary delves into the moments and victories, which brought an entire community from the darkness into the light. MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS WOMEN & GIRLS In 2019, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls finished and released their report, Reclaiming Power and Place. Four years post Truth and Reconciliation, how far have Canadians, Albertans and Calgarians come to understand colonialism and shared histories with Indigenous peoples and communities? Not far enough, and it is therefore not surprising that some are confused by the need for Pride to highlight the final report and the ongoing tragedy of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit people. “Colonial violence, as well as racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia against women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA* people, has become embedded in everyday life – whether this is through interpersonal forms of violence, through institutions like the healthcare system and the justice system, or in the laws, policies and structures of Canadian society. The result has been that many Indigenous people have grown up normalized to violence, while Canadian society shows an appalling apathy to addressing the issue. The National Inquiry into
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls finds that this amounts to genocide.” (pg. 4, Executive Summary of the Final Report - National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Women and Girls)
While these conversations are incredibly difficult, they are desperately needed to stop genocide and the everyday violence Indigenous in Calgary, and globally are facing. I appreciate Calgary Pride highlighting this as a shared responsibility and showing leadership to educate the 2LGBTQQIA* community, Calgarians, and global citizens on the rights of Indigenous Peoples’ and advocating for the Indigenous 2LGBTQQIA* community. The symbolism and significance of Calgary Pride putting a spotlight on violence against Indigenous 2SLGBTQQIA people in Calgary cannot be overstated. This is a past and CURRENT reality for the community and we honour these truths. We urge all to read the report and implement the 231 Calls to Justice. Within in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report released in 2015, we urge all to read and implement the 94 Calls to Action. These Calls are for all Canadians to take responsibility for which includes the LGBTQQIA* community. 2019 PARADE MARSHAL ANNOUNCEMENT This year, for the first time in Canadian history, the provincial government of Alberta chose to roll back LGBTQ2S+ rights and to remove funding for the working group on conversion therapy in Alberta. In a written response, the Calgary Pride Board of Directors called for brave leadership, from all levels of government, to put an end to this egregious practice, it read: “The recent suggestion that this practice is not happening in Alberta is not only untrue, but it also endangers the lives of vulnerable people who often have little power to stop it from happening. It tells them their lived experiences weren’t real, denies them an opportunity to heal from the trauma of that experience, and significantly increases their vulnerability to further traumatic experiences such as self-harm, homelessness, exposure to family violence, addiction and even death.” Furthering this conversation, Calgary Pride chooses the now unfunded Conversion Therapy Working Group as the 2019 Calgary Pride Parade Marshals. Acting as symbols of our community’s refusal to be silenced, and our unrelenting support of those subjected to this treatment, these individuals will lead the parade as a reminder that our voices carry weight, our community deserves to be heard, and that collectively we will not accept any practice that calls into question our inalienable right to exist.
Calgary Pride continues to be uninterested in leadership that deny facts, and instead chooses to focus on the leaders and everyday citizens who choose to protect vulnerable people from this abhorrent practice. Members of the Conversion Therapy Working Group that will be marching as this year’s Parade Marshals include: Dr. Kevin Alderson, Glynnis Lieb (co-chair), Janis Irwin (alt-chair), Nicole Goehring (co-chair), Gary Simpson, and Junaid bin Jahangir. When Nicole Goehring was asked about the Conversion Therapy Working Group acting as this year’s Calgary Pride Parade Marshals, Goehring had this to say, “We started this work because Albertans told us they wanted a formal ban on Conversion Therapy and because it’s the right thing to do. Attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity cause trauma, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. Albertans get it, many municipalities get it, and many other jurisdictions are moving forward with mechanisms to ban this harmful and abusive practice. When Minister Shandro and Premier Kenney decided to dismantle our working group, we decided we would continue on our own with the support of Alberta’s NDP Caucus. CHERISHING TRANS YOUTH IN UNCERTAIN TIMES In what seems like the blink of an eye, summer is winding down and Pride season is upon us, and before the last remnants of glitter are washed from our hair, students will find themselves heading back to school. A return that for many trans and gender diverse youth carries uncertainty and trepidation. With the recent passing of Bill 8, many trans students return to their schools unsure of how much support and safety will exist for them and afraid of the possibility that the inclusion they’ve previously had will be taken away. This is because as a result of the legislation, among many other changes, there is no longer a mandated timeline on schools to act on requests to start GSAs and no longer any protections in place to assure students will not be outed to caregivers. With these threats on our trans and gender diverse youths’ well being, they need us all as family, friends, community members and fellow human beings to cherish and support them more than ever. But how do we do that? The truth is there is no simple answer. Much of the trauma trans youth experience is a mountain made up of hundreds of tiny cuts, so tearing down those walls also becomes the work of doing so one brick at a time. And while the type and amount of bricks that exist for each youth is unique to

them, here are 3 immensely meaningful keystone actions you can start with today: 1. Use the name and pronouns with which they identify. Ask almost any trans or gender diverse youth and this is consistently at the top of their needs. Put in the work to get it right now matter how hard or awkward it might feel. It holds the key to saying, on the most foundational level: I see you, who you are is worthy and valid, and I support and accept you. 2. Celebrate their strength and resiliency. Trans and gender diverse youth are superheroes! Each and every one of them. And, like super heroes, they don’t need to be reminded of the adversity facing them. They live it and are well aware. What they need is to have their strength, courage and resiliency celebrated and mirrored back at them for acts both big and small each and every day. 3. Surround them with love. Circle them with as many supportive humans, young and old, as you can. Educate, bring along or, if needed, remove harmful humans from their lives. Connect them with community, both peers their own age and thriving trans adults. Don’t just tell it that it will get better, show them that it not only does, but it can be better now. And tell them, every single day what a gift and a blessing they are. That we see you, that you matter to us, and that you are loved beyond all measure. HIV PrEP Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the immune system and makes it hard for the body to fight diseases and infections. HIV is passed (transmitted) through blood, semen, and fluids from the vagina and rectum. HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) helps prevent HIV in people who have a very high risk of getting the virus. It is taken as a pill once a day. HIV PrEP lowers the risk of getting HIV from sexual activity by more than 95% when it’s taken every day. Eligibility criteria for publicly funded HIV PrEP includes: • Men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women and gender diverse people reporting anal sex without a condom in the past 6 months and any of the following: • Chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis infection in the past 12 months • Use of nPEP (non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis) more than once • Sex partner(s) known to be living with HIV who are not taking treatment, have HIV virus in their blood or don’t know their HIV virus levels • HIRI-MSM risk score ≥ 11 (HIV Infection Risk Index for MSM; this is a tool to asses risk of HIV in MSM clients) • Multiple sex partners • Heterosexual persons in an ongoing relationship with an HIV positive partner who is not taking treatment, has HIV
virus in their blood or does not know their HIV virus levels. (PrEP isn’t needed for people who are in a stable, closed relationship with a partner living with HIV who is getting treatment and has very low levels of HIV virus) • People who inject drugs (PWID) and share injection supplies • Heterosexual persons engaging in sex with partner(s) who may be from a population or community with high rates of HIV (e.g. PWID, countries with a high HIV prevalence) HIV PrEP doesn’t prevent other STIs. It’s important to have regular STI testing and go for testing right away if you have symptoms of an STI, such as discharge from the penis or vagina or burning when you pee (urinate). To access provincially funded PrEP, patients must be Alberta residents with a valid Alberta Health Care card and must receive a prescription from a designated PrEP prescriber after they are determined to be medically eligible. NEW PROVINCIAL ADVISORY COUNCIL ADDRESSES HEALTH NEEDS OF SEXUAL AND GENDER MINORITY PATIENTS, FAMILIES AND PROVIDERS A new Alberta Health Services (AHS) provincial advisory council (PAC) was launched in early 2019 to provide a direct connection between the health system and Alberta’s sexual and gender minority patients, families and providers. The Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) PAC will address the health needs of patients and families, and contribute to creating a safer and more welcoming healthcare environment for everyone. The SOGIE PAC includes people from across the province who have lived experience with the healthcare

system and understand the needs and barriers to care. Council members advise on programs, services and strategies to address stigma within the healthcare system. Advisory councils bring valuable perspectives from patients, families and communities to help inform strategy, policy and planning development for AHS. In addition to four PACs, AHS supports 12 regionallybased Health Advisory Councils (HACs) that bring the voice of their communities to program and service decisions, and the Wisdom Council, which provides advice to programs and services relative to the needs of Indigenous populations.
