A MESSAGE FROM OUR

PRESIDENT

Calgary’s gender and sexually diverse (GSD) community is rapidly growing, and as a community we are becoming increasingly more aware of the complexities of authentically fostering inclusive ways of knowing and living. Many members of our community experience visible and non-visible intersectionality - queer and trans people of colour (QPOC), Indigenous and Two-spirit persons, mental health, sexual health (HIV) stigmatization, and persons who are differently abled to name a few. As Cesar Chavez, a civil rights activist said, “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about the progress and prosperity for our community… Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” While the GSD liberation movement was born out of protest, in more recent years, largely due to the progress of human rights legislation and mainstream media, the focus of many festivities have shifted towards that of a celebration. Celebrating our progress is an important aspect of modern queer culture; however, it must be balanced with an understanding of the past and present needs of each individual’s intersectionality. Many in our community do not yet experience the same freedoms as others, still held by biases that need to be named and corrected. As we celebrate our progress this year, take a minute to reflect and ask yourself – How do I contribute to the progress and prosperity of our community? How can I foster inclusive ways of knowing and living, and include the aspirations and needs of others? “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” - Coretta Scott King Happy Pride!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Each city is unique in its cultural landscape, social programming and community initiatives. When viewed through a wider lens, challenges and opportunities may seem similar, but no two cities, or their needs are exactly alike. And in order to understand the unique challenges of a community, one must take a deep dive to actively engage, as well as consciously seek out and listen to the diverse voices who live, endure, create and learn within a city’s walls. As I conclude my first year as Calgary Pride’s Executive Director, this process has become the foundation of my PRIDE. My gratitude to our fellow non-profit organizations, community groups, funders, sponsors and individuals in their unwavering willingness to partner, inform, share and support is enormous and immeasurable. Whether talking to sponsors about visibility and inclusion, creating family friendly opportunities to learn and to celebrate, or engaging in conversations to learn what needs to be done for all of us to thrive, I’m excited to step into our collective future together. Yours in Pride,

Parker Chapple Executive Director

INCLUSION MATTERS It’s that simple We support a culture where identities are celebrated, not checked at the door.

A MESSAGE FROM Hello Calgary, You may have heard about ATB’s promise to listen. It means we listen to our customers, and to one another as ATB team members. But it also means we listen to all Albertans. It’s a pledge we are passionate about and it enables us to make banking work for people, support our province and give back to our communities through initiatives like Pride. This year, our partnership with Pride extends from Calgary to Edmonton to Lethbridge. We’re also continuing our support of Camp fYrefly and fYrefly in Schools. We know that this type of support is only genuine if we foster a safe and accepting workplace for ATB team members. To that end, we recently put out a new challenge to each of our 5,000+ team members: Courageously be yourself and a true ally for each other. I look forward to seeing how it will change the lives of those who haven’t always felt supported or accepted at work. I applaud those who are forcing similar conversations and creating change all over our great province. From all of us at ATB, happy Pride, Calgary!

Curtis Stange President & CEO ATB Financial 6

OUR TEAM ANCESTRAL LAND Calgary Pride acknowledges the traditional territories of the Blackfoot and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina, and the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nation. We would also like to note that the Calgary Pride Festival takes place on land adjacent to where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and that the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. We thank these communities for their stewardship of the land on which this event takes place today.

2018 PARADE GRAND MARSHAL GROUP

ALBERTA GSAs

Calgary Pride is pleased to announce the Parade Marshal for 2018 as the Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) and QueerStraight Alliances (QSAs) of Calgary! We are pleased to have the youth and teachers who support one another to lead us in honouring the past and building the future. Gay-Straight Alliances or Queer–Straight Alliances are student run groups that work to create welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe spaces for sexual and gender diverse students and their allies in schools. GSAs and QSAs are spaces that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging . There are over 100 GSAs and QSAs in Calgary and area. Calgary Pride recognizes these groups as these youth show their strength and resilience while they navigate adolescence alongside their peers as well as their identity amid political turbulence and social debates for simply being who they are. Together we can evolve. Together we choose love. For more information on GSAs in Alberta, visit: education.alberta.ca/gay-straight-alliances/what-is-a-gsa

Happy Pride Week! Proud To Support YOU!

Diversity of thought yields great discovery and innovation. This is how we address society’s most pressing challenges.

Standing behind inclusion of the LGBTQA+ community and the freedom to be one’s self is not only the neighbourly thing to do... it’s the human thing to do.

That’s why the University of Calgary values the diverse and vibrant minds of our community. ucalgary.ca

Diversity Is Strength.

GREEN INITIATIVES Calgary Pride celebrates all colours of the rainbow, but we especially love being GREEN! Working in partnership with Green Event Services, we were able to divert 60% of the waste from our 2017 festival away from the landfill, and return the parade route and Prince’s Island Park to a state better than we found them! With your help, we’ll do even better in 2018. You can help us keep our environmental impact to a minimum by using appropriate waste receptacles around the park, and making sure you recycle this guide when the Festival is over!
