THE PRESIDENT Pride is place that demonstrates: “you belong.” No matter who you are, no matter who you love, no matter how you identify your gender or how you express it, I want to be clear – you belong here at Pride. This is your year. By participating in Pride in any way – whether it’s joining the parade, watching the music festival or just posting on social media with #YYCPride – you are strengthening this important movement. I want to thank all our supporters, partners and sponsors. I would particularly like to single out ATB Financial for their steadfast support of every aspect of this wonderful festival. I also want to highlight that this year, we are proud to partner with Trans Equality Society of Alberta (TESA) in support of advancing Trans rights. Celebrating pride is essential. It is a time when we come together as a community, for a public display of celebration, to work actively on our mission of Spurring Diversity. MAYOR NENSHI On behalf of my City Council colleagues and the citizens of Calgary, I am pleased to welcome you to Calgary Pride 2016. For more than two decades, Calgary Pride has provided the opportunity to celebrate the diversity that makes our city great. Our community has grown and changed over the past 26 years, but the need for Calgarians to stand together to promote and celebrate equality remains important. As we struggle to understand hateful acts of violence around the world, we must remember that love always wins. We live in a community that understands we are greater together, and Calgary Pride helps to foster and strengthen that understanding. I would like to recognize the organizers and volunteers with Calgary Pride for their hard work and dedication to building a better Calgary. I hope you all have a wonderful time celebrating Calgary Pride!

Happiness may seem like a strange thing for a financial institution to strive for, but we know that good things happen when happiness becomes your purpose. That’s why we stand strong in our support for Pride, through our long-time partnership with Camp fYrefly and fYrefly in Schools in support of LGBTQ+ youth, and through the festivals and parades across Alberta. One of my proudest moments is marching with ATB in the Calgary Pride Parade last year. Even though it literally rained on our parade, the energy, cheers and positive vibe from everyone along the route was an amazing experience. To help celebrate this year, we’re bringing back our rainbow “Pride Walk” outside our new branch at Stephen Avenue and Centre Street. And we’ll be lighting up the branch – and McMahon Stadium – in Pride colours. Within ATB, our LGBTA Network is building awareness and identifying how we can be more aware, more inclusive, understanding and respectful of the real diversity that defines Alberta and Albertans today. On behalf of all of us at ATB Financial, I want to wish everyone a Happy Pride.

This family friendly parade sees upwards of 60,000 spectators as over 125 entries from community groups, corporations, politicians, churches and public services roll through the heart of downtown, and celebrates the tremendous diversity of Calgary’s community. Rae Spoon has been called one of Canada’s best songwriters and their new album Armour does not disappoint. The ten new songs hold all of the lyrical depth indicative of Spoon’s compositions while showcasing their distinctive voice. Armour’s self-produced enigmatic soundscapes blur the lines between organic and electronic instruments. Analogue synthesizers, electronic drum programming, drum kits, percussion, electric bass, cello and guitar carry the album through pop refrains and danceable beats. Released by Coax Records, the album is the result of collaboration with Calgary’s Lorrie Matheson at Arch Audio Studios and features electronic arrangements by Berlin’s Alexandre Decoupigny. Armour, Spoon’s eighth solo album, is the highly anticipated follow-up to Polaris Prize– nominated My Prairie Home, a musical about Spoon’s fraught childhood in Alberta. As Raewas Spoon much as My Prairie Home aboutBio Spoon’s upbringing as a queer youth in a Pentecostal household, Armour is about their view of the future. Moments of reckoning with trauma and self-preservation mingle with messages of hope and survival. Armour explores the idea that there is no instruction manual for healthy adulthood, asserting that the attempt to construct meaning is itself the point of life. Armour is a tribute to the intimate space where both hope and despair have space to share the same voice. Rae’s first book, First Spring Grass Fire, was published by Arsenal Pulp Press in 2012. The book was a finalist for a Lambda Award in the Transgender Fiction category and was shortlisted for an Expozine Alternative Press Award. In the spring of 2014, Rae was awarded a Honour of Distinction by the Dayne Ogilvie Prize, presented by the Writers’ Trust of Canada. Rae’s second book, co-written with Ivan E. Coyote and titled Gender Failure, was published in 2014. Gender Failure was on the 2015 Over The Rainbow Reading List and was translated into German. 20

GREEN INITIATIVES
Calgary Pride celebrates all colours of the rainbow, but we especially love being GREEN! Working in partnership with Green Event Services, we were able to divert 73% of the waste from our 2015 festival away from the landfill, and return the parade route and Shaw Millennium Park to a state better than we found them! With your help, we’ll do even better in 2016.
