Karl Hirzer Associate Conductor

Ian Jutsun Lead Vocals

Karl Hirzer, a conductor and pianist from New Westminster, British Columbia, has been Resident/ Associate Conductor with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra since 2016. Active internationally, Hirzer has led performances with ensembles such as the Sczcecin Philharmonic, Symphony Nova Scotia, Regina Symphony Orchestra, Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Orchestra Senzaspine, and the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana. He works regularly with new music titans Land’s End Ensemble, most recently in collaboration with American composer John Corigliano, who said: “Mr. Hirzer brought a combination of detailed accuracy and intense musical feeling to the work [Mr. Tambourine Man], resulting in an absolutely marvelous performance.” Hirzer previously acted as Assistant Conductor for the National Academy Orchestra of Canada, and the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble.

He was a faculty member at the 22nd Morningside Music Bridge program in Warsaw. Hirzer has performed with renowned soloists including Evelyn Glennie, Chris Botti, Agata Szymczewska, Jonathan Crow, and Owen Pallett. A trained pianist, he holds bachelor’s (University of Victoria) and master’s (McGill University) degrees in performance, as well as an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto diploma.

Ian Jutsun is one of Canada’s most respected voices. He began his singing career at age 13 in Montreal, where he fronted several bands.

In 1992 he moved to Toronto and began songwriting, recording, and playing with respected and talented musicians from Canada and the U.S. Jutsun was a featured singer and principal actor in the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams, working directly with Grammy and Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman, who composed a feature song for Jutson called The Lament. In 2016, with his original Jazz/Pop ensemble, Jutsun released a new project called The Night Porters (available on iTunes and Google Play) and is currently writing and recording a followup CD. He is a member of The Platters starring Norris Vines, and tours across North America as the lead singer in acclaimed group Brass Transit, performing the musical legacy of the band Chicago. He is pleased to find time in his tour schedule for Jeans 'n Classics.

Andrea Koziol is a performing songwriter, improvisor and actor based in Toronto. She has released six solo albums to date, the most recent of which is I’ll Be Seeing You (2019) with renowned Newfoundland jazz pianist and composer Bill Brennan. Koziol has toured festivals, concert halls, and clubs across North America fronting her own ensembles and supporting numerous collaborations. She has been honoured with a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the KM Hunter Award for Music, and recognition from Canadian arts councils at every level. Recent theatre credits include The Cave (Soulpepper/Luminato, 2019), a ground-breaking interspecies song cycle. She is a lover of beat-based improv, musical cliff jumping, and using her voice to make people feel something. Koziol is always proud to take the stage with Jeans 'n Classics, and bring the unparalleled magic of symphony orchestra to audiences everywhere.

Lis Soderberg’s diverse career includes symphony and rock stages, songwriting awards, singersongwriter coffee house gigs, commercial work, live broadcasts, and guest appearances and features on albums, films, television, and radio. Songs from Soderberg’s solo debut CD Refuge were used in four episodes of the acclaimed series Schitt’s Creek. Her song All I Need received a Billboard Song Contest Jazz award and was the first track on a 2009 celebrity holiday compilation alongside tracks by Huey Lewis and the News, Richard Marx, Dennis DeYoung, and William Shatner. Soderberg’s album and performance credits include Kevin Breit (Norah Jones, k.d. lang, Roseanne Cash), Eric Schenkman (Spin Doctors), Russell DeCarle (Prairie Oyster), Gwen Swick (Quartette, the Marigolds), Ivan Neville, and many more, including numerous Jeans 'n Classics guest artists such as Rik Emmett, Lawrence Gowan, Alan Frew, Roger Hodgson, Lorraine Segato, Mark Jordan and Amy Sky. She is delighted to continue working with Jeans 'n Classics and the wonderful orchestras and people she meets along the way.

About the Calgary Phil The Calgary Philharmonic celebrated 65 years as a pillar of Calgary’s vibrant arts community in 2020 and has grown to be one of Canada’s most celebrated live music ensembles.
