Diana Cohen Concertmaster Diana Cohen has a multifaceted career as a concertmaster, chamber musician, and soloist. She is Concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic, and founder and Artistic Director of acclaimed music festival ChamberFest Cleveland.

Over the last year and a half, Cohen and her husband, pianist Roman Rabinovich have created a brand new organization for Calgary to debut this summer — ChamberFest West (chamberfestwest.com). This international summer chamber music festival will bring the most exciting musicians from around the globe to Calgary for a 5 day festival. Cohen has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras, has performed at some of the most prestigious festivals including Marlboro Music Festival and Ravinia Festival, and collaborated with renowned artists including Garrick Ohlsson, Mitsuko Uchida, Jonathan Biss, and members of the Guarneri, Juilliard, Dover and Miro, Cleveland, and Parker Quartets. Cohen has toured and recorded with the Grammy-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and performed with the East Coast Chamber Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, she studied with Donald Weilerstein and received the Jerome Gross Prize.

Cohen’s father Franklin was longtime principal clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and her brother Alexander is timpanist for the Calgary Phil. Her late mother, Lynette Diers Cohen, was an esteemed bassoonist. Cohen lives in Calgary with her husband and her 2 year old, Noa Lynette, who sings all day long.

The Calgary Phil celebrated 65 years as a pillar of Calgary’s vibrant arts community in 2020 and has grown to be one of Canada’s most celebrated live music ensembles. about the pieces Grover’s Corners from Our Town Aaron Copland (1900 to 1990) Arranged by Jay Lichtmann Copland’s wish to compose music that communicates directly with listeners led him to compose a number of scores for the twentieth century’s most popular entertainment medium: film. Not all the movies he scored were worthy of his talent, but some are fine pictures made even better by his contribution. One of his finest film scores was for Our Town (1940), based on Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize play. His gentle, heartfelt music provided the perfect backdrop for this wistful ode to life in Grover’s Corners, a small New England town, during the early years of the twentieth century.

Sonatine Eugène Bozza (1905 to 1991) After graduating from the Paris Conservatoire with numerous top awards, Bozza launched a distinguished career as composer, conductor and administrator. His catalogue of music contains several large-scale works such as ballets and choral pieces. He won his widest fame for his chamber music, those works featuring wind instruments in particular. To quote the authoritative Grove Music Online, his wind music “displays at a high level the qualities characteristic of mid-twentieth century French chamber music: melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern for instrumental capabilities.” He composed this brilliant, humorous Sonatine in 1951. Dedicated to France’s Republican Guard, it consists of four compact movements, the second of them an eloquent lament.

Trio in E-flat Major for Horn, Violin, and Piano, Op. 40, Movements 1 + 2 Johannes Brahms (1833 to 1897) Brahms’s familiarity with the horn stretched back to childhood. His father had played it in the militia band in Hamburg, and the composer played it himself as a youth. He composed this highly Romantic Trio in 1865, in Lichtenthal, a spa town near Baden-Baden in the Black Forest. The influence of the forest locale, with its mystical and hunting associations, made itself felt in the Trio. The gentle first movement is a poetic mood painting. A robust scherzo follows.

Sonata No. 2 in G Major (Blues), Movement 2 Maurice Ravel (1875 to 1937) Ravel’s two violin sonatas were his first and last chamber works. After he ran through the one-movement Sonata (1897) with a fellow student, he dismissed it as worthless. The three-movement Sonata No. 2 followed 30 years later. He needed four years of frustrating, intermittent labour to complete it. A major source of difficulty was his undergoing an evolution of style, away from the opulence of the ballet Daphnis et Chloé towards leaner, more concentrated expression. Continuing the enthusiasm for American popular music that he had developed in the early 1920s, the second movement is a stylized Blues, complete with irregular rhythms and bent, “blue” notes.

Valse-scherzo, Op. 34 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 to 1893) Tchaikovsky created this charming piece for Iosif Kotek, a violinist who gave him considerable advice during the early stages of composing his violin concerto, but whose friendship with the composer cooled before the concerto was finished. Tchaikovsky’s pupil, Polish soloist Stanisław Barcewicz, gave the first performance of the Valse-scherzo in 1879. Tuneful and infectiously rhythmic, it is perfect encore material.

Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219 (Turkish) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 to 1791) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the greatest of all child prodigies in music, received from his father Leopold a thorough education in composition and performance.

The latter included piano, harpsichord and violin. In his maturity he focused his performing skills on the piano, but the young artist appeared most often as a soloist on the violin, beginning with the concert tours that he, his father and his sister Maria Anna (“Nannerl”) made during the 1760s.

In 1769, he was awarded the post of Honorary Concertmaster in the Court Orchestra of Salzburg, his home town. His duties included leading it from the first desk of violins (this being before the rise of the conductor, as we know the role), playing solos, and writing new music for it to perform. From April to December 1775, the nineteen year old composer wrote the last four of his five violin concertos. It’s likely that he wrote some of them to perform with himself as soloist, and others for the orchestra’s concertmaster, Antonio Brunetti (whom he despised!).

He completed No. 5 on 20 December. It is not only the most accomplished of the series, but also the most unusual. The finale is the source of the concerto’s nickname. In the delightfully startling minor key episode mid-way through, Mozart instructed the cellos and basses to strike their strings with the wood of the bow. These practices recall the Turkish military music that was all the rage in Austria at the time, a lingering after-effect of the sieges that the Turkish army, with its percussion-laden military bands, had made against Vienna during the previous two centuries.
