Diana Cohen Concertmaster Diana Cohen has a multifaceted career as a concertmaster, chamber musician, and soloist. She is Concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic, and founder and Artistic Director of acclaimed music festival ChamberFest Cleveland.

Over the last year and a half, Cohen and her husband, pianist Roman Rabinovich have created a brand new organization for Calgary to debut this summer — ChamberFest West (chamberfestwest.com). This international summer chamber music festival will bring the most exciting musicians from around the globe to Calgary for a 5 day festival. Cohen has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras, has performed at some of the most prestigious festivals including Marlboro Music Festival and Ravinia Festival, and collaborated with renowned artists including Garrick Ohlsson, Mitsuko Uchida, Jonathan Biss, and members of the Guarneri, Juilliard, Dover and Miro, Cleveland, and Parker Quartets. Cohen has toured and recorded with the Grammy-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and performed with the East Coast Chamber Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, she studied with Donald Weilerstein and received the Jerome Gross Prize.

Cohen’s father Franklin was longtime principal clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and her brother Alexander is timpanist for the Calgary Phil. Her late mother, Lynette Diers Cohen, was an esteemed bassoonist. Cohen lives in Calgary with her husband and her 2 year old, Noa Lynette, who sings all day long.

The Calgary Phil celebrated 65 years as a pillar of Calgary’s vibrant arts community in 2020 and has grown to be one of Canada’s most celebrated live music ensembles. Led by Music Director Rune Bergmann, the Calgary Phil presents classical standards, pop favourites, bold collaborations, and cutting-edge new works, and attracts world-renowned guest artists and conductors. about the pieces Caprice on Danish and Russian Airs, Op. 79 Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 to 1921) At a time when French composers longed above all for success in the theatre, Camille Saint-Saëns proved himself something of a radical by composing a substantial amount of purely instrumental music, from full-length concertos and symphonies to chamber and solo works. He composed this charming bonbon in 1887, while touring Russia. He dedicated it to the Tsarina of Russia, wife of the Tsar, who was a Danish princess – hence the twin sources of thematic material.

The slow, expressive ‘Danish’ first half consists of variations on a sweet melody.

The second, ‘Russian’ half is based on a vivacious dance theme.

Trio No. 2 in E Minor for Violin, Cello and Piano Op. 67, Movements 1 + 2 Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 to 1975) Dmitri Shostakovich composed the first of his two piano trios in 1922, while he was still a student. He didn’t return to the medium until 21 years later. Where the first Trio was a brief, single-movement work, the second is a full-scale work in four movements. At the time of its creation, the Second World War was raging on, and Soviet dictator Joseph continued to make his own people’s lives a living hell. Echoes of those ghastly situations ring throughout the Trio. Another likely inspiration was the premature death of Shostakovich’s friend, the distinguished musicologist Ivan Sollertinsky. Shostakovich dedicated the Trio to him. “It is impossible to express in words all the grief that engulfed me on hearing the news about Ivan Ivanovich’s death” he wrote to Sollertinsky’s widow. “He was my very dearest friend. I am indebted to him for all my growth. To live without him will be unbearably difficult.”

Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219 (Turkish) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 to 1791) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the greatest of all child prodigies in music, received from his father Leopold a thorough education in composition and performance.

The latter included piano, harpsichord and violin. In his maturity he focused his performing skills on the piano, but the young artist appeared most often as a soloist on the violin, beginning with the concert tours that he, his father and his sister Maria Anna (“Nannerl”) made during the 1760s.

In 1769, he was awarded the post of Honorary Concertmaster in the Court Orchestra of Salzburg, his home town. His duties included leading it from the first desk of violins (this being before the rise of the conductor, as we know the role), playing solos, and writing new music for it to perform. From April to December 1775, the nineteen year old composer wrote the last four of his five violin concertos. It’s likely that he wrote some of them to perform with himself as soloist, and others for the orchestra’s concertmaster, Antonio Brunetti (whom he despised!).

He completed No. 5 on 20 December. It is not only the most accomplished of the series, but also the most unusual. The finale is the source of the concerto’s nickname. In the delightfully startling minor key episode mid-way through, Mozart instructed the cellos and basses to strike their strings with the wood of the bow. These practices recall the Turkish military music that was all the rage in Austria at the time, a lingering after-effect of the sieges that the Turkish army, with its percussion-laden military bands, had made against Vienna during the previous two centuries.
