A Message from Rhona Shore Executive Director

F

inding your centre – this is a common phrase that we often hear, and refers to the practice of discovering and connecting with your inner self, by concentrating on a sense of strength and stability in your life. It often involves self-reflection, self-awareness, and practices that help you stay grounded and focused.

Finding Your Centre at the Paperny Family JCC can include adding a new class to your health and wellness routine, such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation (page 35) or TRX Total Body Circuit (page 34). For the sporty folks, we’ve got Golf Conditioning and (page 36) and Pickleball Conditioning (page 37). Connect with community by participating in our Go Green Week (page 25) or attend our International Women’s

Day event (page 25). Celebrate the Jewish holidays by joining us for Flavours of Tu B’Shevat (page 25) and Hamantaschen Make & Bake (page 25). For our children and youth, we are excited to partner with the Dance Compound for Acro/Hip Hop Combo (page 16) and Musical Theatre (page 17). And for the art enthusiasts, we have partnered with Alikis Art House for Mini Masters (page 16) and Basics of Drawing Foundations (page 16). In our sports and recreation department, we are pleased to introduce Youth Pickleball aka Little Dills (page 17) for ages 8 to 12. Our winter programs and events provide the opportunity for new experiences for everyone. We encourage you to explore all that the JCC has to offer this session. We truly believe that the more you engage at YOUR Centre, the more connected, balanced, and enriched you will feel! See you soon!

It’s Moments Like This Calgary Jewish Federation has been providing support in every type of Jewish moment - in times of crisis and in times of calm, we are building community and changing lives. We are there the moment a child enters Jewish preschool and the moment they learn their first Hebrew song. We are there, on a high school campus, the moment a student uses their voice to advocate against antisemitism. And we are there the moment a Holocaust survivor shares their story. Purim

Tu B'Shevat

January 25 | 15 Shevat

Also known as the New Year of the Trees because it was used for calculating the age of trees for tithing. The Torah teaches that fruit from a tree may not be eaten during the first three years; the fourth year’s fruit is for G-d, and after this, the fruit can be eaten. It is customary to eat a new fruit on this holiday or to eat from the Seven Species (shivat haminim) that are abundant in Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Some people also plant trees on this day. Tu B’Shevat began as a minor holiday marked by a festive meal and it has grown into the a modern Jewish Earth Day. It is an opportunity to celebrate our sense of environmental responsibility and Jewish tradition. Come celebrate this holiday at the JCC. See details on page 27.

Fast of Esther March 21 | 11 Adar II

This fast, also called Ta’anit Esther, is a fast from dawn until dusk on Purim eve, commemorating the three-day fast observed by the Jewish people in the story of Purim.

March 24 | 14 Adar II

This jolly festivity commemorates the defeat of Haman’s plot, the prime minister of King Ahasuerus of the Persian Empire. During 357 BCE, Haman planned to massacre the Jews, as recorded in the book of Esther in the Torah. The Jews were saved by the heroic Queen Esther, who married the king. When Ahasueros discovers that his wife Esther is Jewish, he decides to reverse Haman’s decree, and instead of the Jews being killed, Haman, his sons, and other enemies are killed instead. We celebrate dressing up in costume, some people choose to dress as characters from the Purim story. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to listen to the story of Purim – chanted from Megillat Esther (The Scroll of Esther). We also send mishloach manot, packages of treats and goodies to friends, family, and people in need. A traditional cookie called hamentaschen is enjoyed, which our Golden Age (seniors) group at the JCC bake every year!

Shushan Purim March 25 | 15 Adar II

The battles fought between the Jews and their enemies throughout the Persian empire took place on Adar 13. The Jews rested and celebrated the victory on the following day – Adar 14. In the capital of the empire, the city of Shushan, however, there were a greater number of Jew-haters, so the fighting continued for two days: 13 and 14 Adar. The victory celebrations in Shushan were thus held on 15 Adar.

Aqua Zen A shallow water aquafit experience that encourages peace and vitality through a variety of movements that inspires harmony within the mind, body and spirit. This holistic, wellness-based class focuses on mindfulness and range of motion while improving balance and body awareness. Find your zen while receiving all of the tranquility that the water has to offer. As You Choose Participants are free to choose to work out in the deep water wearing a flotation belt or in the shallow water with their feet on the floor. With careful attention and preparation, the instructor is able to teach to all participants.

Deep Water Workout Wearing a floatation belt, you submerge yourself in the deep end of a pool for a deep water workout! While your deep water aerobics class has a low impact on your joints, it has an enormous impact on your cardiovascular system with the help of the resistance in the water. Class formats may vary between Tabata, circuit, boot camp or interval. Shallow Water Workout Activate your aqua urge for exercise! This class is held in the pool’s shallow end in chest-deep water so your feet are always touching the floor. Shallow water workouts improve agility, coordination, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Equipment may be used to develop strength and balance. Tether Deep Water Workout Aquafit enthusiasts will benefit from this fun cardiovascular workout in the deep water! There is a strong focus on core stability while performing deep water moves which will result in increased intensity. Participants will find themselves tethered to a lane rope with a bungee cord attached to a belt. Great for beginner to advanced!

Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to progress you toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them. We progress through the winter season with structured, coached classes. We don’t make pretty sets of choreography to simply pass the time. We spend our precious time in the saddle getting more competent on the bike. We get pumped about challenging ourselves, riding outside, and maybe participating in an event. There are no egos – everyone is the same speed on a trainer. The bottom line: good company, great music, and smart sessions.

Living

GOLDEN AGE

The Active Living program is designed specifically for people living with any type of chronic condition. Our trained and talented instructors are careful to offer modifications which address the individual needs of participants, while ensuring that all of the major components of a fitness class are included. The Active Living monthly membership gives access to in-person, Zoom and aqua fitness classes. If you prefer, a Zoom only membership is available. Easy Going This class is geared toward adults who are looking for a gentler approach to fitness. The warm up and strength training are done while seated. Because weight-bearing exercise is so important, walking, posture (against a wall) and balance (holding on to a dance bar) will be done standing.

Gentle Chair Yoga* (In-person & Zoom) Bring out your inner Yogi! This class will have you doing all of the wonderful things in traditional yoga, but in a gentler way. We get it – some days, getting down on the ground is not easy. We want your body to feel amazing and safe through guided stretches and yoga flows while you sit comfortably in a chair.

Get Going Features walking, seated and standing movement for the cardio component. Strength, balance and flexibility training are done seated or standing behind a chair. Join us for a functional fitness class to help with the various activities of everyday living.

Balance Booster Take your confidence to the next level and live life YOUR way! With better balance fall risk decreases, reaction time improves and coordination is maintained. In this class we’ll build strength for better balance and stability and work on improving both posture and gait. Participants work at their own pace; all levels welcome.

Keep Going This class is for adults with a chronic condition who are looking for a little more challenge, but still want a low impact class that is easy on the joints. The entire class is done standing and offers various formats to keep it interesting.

*The following GroupX classes are included with the Active Living Membership: Everfit, Golden Rhythms and Urban Pole Walking.
