C

ommunity centres open the door for opportunity to connect with others in a welcoming and friendly space. In addition to creating an environment for meaningful interactions, there is a lot more to community centres than might initially meet the eye.

JCCs in particular are dedicated to creating a sense of belonging and supporting the health and wellness of their members.

There are multiple benefits you can expect from participating in programs and events at the Paperny Family JCC. Better health and well-being, support for parents, stronger social connections, a place to celebrate Jewish culture – all provided in an inclusive and warm atmosphere.

Registration Opens

Please note that in-person registration at the JCC will be on a first-come basis, and will commence at 8:00am. *To receive a discount on children’s recreational programs (see pages 11 and 18 for more info).

How to Register Online registration is now available at mycalgaryjcc.com. Program registration and payment can also be made in person or by phone (403-253-8600, ext.0) with cheque, debit, Visa or MasterCard.

• All registrations must be paid in full at the time of registration.

• Membership must be valid throughout the course of the session including full year programs, to receive member rates.

Supervision Policy The JCC requires that an adult must accompany a child under eight at all times.

For children aged eight to 18, parents must use their discretion to determine the level of adult supervision required.

Children nine to 11 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times when using the Fitness Centre.

When swimming, children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult who is “within arms reach” at all times.

Children eight to 18 may be dropped off unsupervised for short periods, but the JCC reserves the right to require parents to provide supervision. The JCC provides fully supervised camps for school days off.

Ultimately, the JCC reserves the right to limit access to children under 18 years, following Alberta Children’s Services guidelines.

NEW Refund Policy The JCC reserves the right to cancel any program due to lack of enrollment, with a full refund. All customer withdrawals for seasonal programs are subject to the following administration fees: • Up to 10 days prior to the start of the program: 10% administration fee.

• Within 10 days of the program start date: 25% administration fee.

• Option to leave a credit on account: No administration fee. Credit must be used within one year. After one year, funds will be donated to the JCC. If the program has started, the JCC does not offer refunds or credits. No prorating is available for absences during programs or service. Year around programs require 30-day (calendar month) written notice.

Personal training is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Membership We accept Visa, MasterCard, cheques, cash, debit and Personally Approved Payment Plan (PAPP). Memberships are not refundable and are non-transferable.

Fee Adjustment Though membership fees are established, the JCC will not refuse membership to any Jewish individual or family who is unable to pay the appropriate fee in full. For more information, call the JCC Customer Service Desk at 403-253-8600, ext.0.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership Freeze or Medical Hold Members have the option of putting their JCC membership on hold for up to 90 days if they plan to be away from the JCC for any extended period. If you are a snowbird and travel south for the winter, or an avid summer golfer, put your membership on hold for a fee of $30 plus GST for a family or couple membership and $15 plus GST for individual, student or senior, and have that time added to the tail-end of your membership.

Memberships can only be frozen once per membership year. No refunds will be issued.

Memberships may also be placed on hold for medical needs provided a doctor’s note is submitted to the JCC Customer Service Desk. No fee will be charged. Note: All people falling within the membership unit are subject to the conditions of a membership freeze.

Loss of Membership Privileges The use of physical force against another person or with the intent of damaging JCC property may result in suspension or loss of membership privileges. Verbal abuse will be handled in the same way as physical force, and may also result in suspension or loss of membership privileges.

Guest Passes Members may bring guests to the JCC as often as they wish during the year. Guest passes may be purchased at the JCC Customer Service Desk – limit five per guest.

Passes are valid for one day only (please make note of expiration date).

Your Membership Card Membership cards are non-transferable and must be carried at all times and presented at the JCC Customer Service Desk, and when registering for programs. Contact the JCC Customer Service Desk immediately if your card is lost, stolen or damaged. Replacement cards are available for a $10 fee. All members over the age of eight years must carry a card.

EARN A FREE Refer a friend to the JCC MONTH! and earn a free month on your next renewal year! When your friend purchases an annual membership an extra month will be added to your next year’s membership just to thank you for spreading the news about the JCC.

Referral Program

Lockers and Change Rooms Full and half lockers are available for daily use at no charge. Half lockers are available for $ 75 + GST per year. Membership cards can be used to borrow day locks from the JCC Customer Service Desk. There is a $5 charge for lost locks or tags. Locks left on overnight will be removed and lockers emptied. The JCC will not be responsible for valuables left in or removed from lockers. Out of respect for our members, children six years and older will not be allowed in the locker rooms of their opposite sex. Universal change rooms are now available.

Attire We require appropriate attire in all areas of the facilities. Shirts and shoes are required in all areas except the locker rooms. The JCC reserves the right to determine what is appropriate clothing. For safety purposes, proper footwear must be worn in the physical activity spaces. Absolutely no outdoor shoes are permitted in any of the fitness areas; no shoes on pool deck.

Saturday Pre-payments Goods and services are not sold on Saturdays out of respect for the Sabbath. Please prepay for all programs and guest passes.

Kashrut Policy Because the JCC is a meeting place for Jewish people of all religious affiliations and practices, all food in the building must be kosher.

Affordable, accessible, and high-quality childcare with the support of the Alberta Affordability Grant, children also have a variety of program options available throughout the day including swimming, dance, all ball multi-sports, and more.

Nutritious, kosher snacks and meals are provided on a daily basis and our entire staff is fully certified.

Families are required to pay a $20 wait list fee. To add your child’s name to the wait list, call us at 403-444-3175 or email babecarewaitlist@cjcc.ca.

Just Like Home @ the JCC Programs for 2 Year Olds Calling all moms and dads! The Paperny Family JCC is offering high quality two year old programs just for you. These programs are a fantastic way to get your toddlers active and engaged with other children their age. Children in our programs get an early jump on their social skills, along with development of their gross and fine motor capabilities. Ready, Set…3s!

Age 3

Welcome to the JCC’s, Ready, Set…3s! program with a curriculum specifically designed for three year olds. This program offers a wide range of activities that prepare children for junior kindergarten the following year. Activities include: crafts, creative movement, drama, science, gross motor play, fine motor focus and interactive play.

Ready, Set…3s! encourages socialization, builds self-esteem, and prepares children for a lifetime of learning. Taught by Meagan Sheridan, a newly licensed early childhood educator with 10 years of experience in childcare. The program runs full year from September 2023 to June 2024 and follows the CBE calendar. Contact the Customer Service Desk at 403-253-8600, ext.0 to register.

KidStart Literacy is a wonderful program designed to help your preschool age child better prepare for Kindergarten. This program has been redesigned by our newly licensed early childhood educator, Meagan Sheridan. Meagan uses a variety of handson and interactive learning techniques to engage young students. The program runs full year from September 2023 to June 2024 and follows the CBE calendar.

Mondays (September to March) Join us for ice skating fun at Trico Centre. Participants will take part in the City of Calgary’s Learn to Skate program with their instructors.

Kids Get Moving

Tuesdays (September to June) The 60 Ways to Play program focuses on your child’s ability to create awareness, and work on developmental milestones through physical literacy. It will shine a spotlight on your child’s directional awareness, handeye coordination, and how that all gets relayed to the body – in creative exercises that are both fun and engaging. This class will focus on teamwork, team relays, exciting challenges, and all out FUN!

Thursdays (September to June) Get your child comfortable and confident in the water! Instructors will meet your child at their level and grow their functional swimming skills. Swim lessons are offered on site through the Life Saving Society.

FITNESS FOR YOUTH ORIENTATIONS Youth orientations allow pre-teens and teens to become familiar with the equipment in the fitness centre and provide them with the confidence and knowledge to safely enjoy the space. Fitness centre etiquette, exercise choice, proper exercise form, and safe loading will be covered in the free, one-hour session.

Pre-Teens (Ages 9-11) Upon completion of a pre-teen youth orientation, youth may access the Fitness Centre in the company of a parent or guardian. Participants learn how to use appropriate cardio equipment and perform functional strength exercises using bodyweight and portable equipment such as TRX, BOSUs, and balance balls. A parent or guardian is required to take the preteen orientation with their youth.

High Holidays

September 16-25 | 1-10 Tishrei 57840

This holiday is also known as the Ten Days of Awe, where first we celebrate Rosh HaShanah (September 16-17 | 1-2 Tishrei) – the head of the new year – and greet each other: Shana Tova Umetuka (Have a good and sweet year).

It is customary to bake round challah, as a metaphor of the cycle of life, and dip pieces in honey. Ten days later, we observe Yom Kippur (September 25 | 10 Tishrei) – the Day of Atonement – a day of spiritual cleansing where we fast and attend synagogue for an entire day of solemn prayer. Between these two dates, there are 10 days where Jews are called to reflect on their shortcomings and transgressions; a period of introspection.

During these days it is customary to go to a body of water (preferably with fish), symbolically cast our sins into the water, and leave our past shortcomings behind us, thereby starting the new year with a clean slate. This ritual is called Tashlich.

Sukkot

September 30-October 6 | 15-21 Tishrei

Named after the booths or huts (sukkot in Hebrew) where Jews are supposed to dwell during this week-long celebration.

According to rabbinic tradition, these flimsy sukkot represent the huts in which the Israelites dwelt during their 40 years of wandering in the desert after escaping from slavery in Egypt. The festival of Sukkot is one of the three great pilgrimage festivals of the Jewish year.

Shmini Atzeret / Simchat Torah October 7-8 | 22-23 Tishrei

Shmini Atzeret celebrates the last day of Sukkot, while Simchat Torah observes the finishing of the reading of the Torah – the Five Books of Moses – and the immediate beginning of the reading from the first book called Bereshit (Genesis).

In this manner, the annual cycle of Torah readings and studying remains unbroken. During this holiday, we dance and joyfully parade with the Torah scrolls in the synagogue.

Chanukah

December 8-15 | 25 Kislev-2 Tevet

During Chanukah, we celebrate Juddah and the Maccabees defeating the Greco-Syrian army in 165 BCE. When the Maccabees regained control of the Temple they only found enough oil to light the menorah for one day, yet it miraculously lasted for eight days. This is why we now light a Chanukiyah (a candelabra with nine branches instead of seven) for eight days. Customs include exchanging gifts, playing dreidel (spin tops), winning or giving gelt (chocolate coins), and eating fried foods such as latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (donuts), and any other fried foods. It is also referred to as the festival of light during the shortest days of the year and the winter solstice.

AQUATICS

Pool Rules 1. Any children seven years of age or younger must be within arm’s reach of an adult 16 years of age or older, and the parent / guardian MUST be in the water. No swim tests are allowed until child is eight years old.

2. Anybody eight years and older who shows signs of weak swimming may be asked to use a lifejacket or can challenge the swim test. If the swim test is completed then no lifejacket and no adult supervision is required. If the swim test is not passed, patron must wear a lifejacket.

Swim Test (as recommended by the Lifesaving Society): Sixty seconds treading water with head fully out of the water, immediately followed by 25 meters swim without stopping.

One long, loud whistle blast means clear the pool.

Please note: • Must take a head to toe shower with soap before entering the pool.

• Consult and get permission from your doctor if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or are 65+ years.

• Max. of three children under 8 years may be supervised by one caregiver, 16+ years.

• No urinating in or fouling the pool.

• Children 0-2 years and anyone incontinent must wear a swim diaper and waterproof pool pants.

• No diving in shallow end.

• No outdoor shoes.

• No glass, food, gum or drink.

• No running, rough play, offensive behaviour or foul language.

Do not use pool if you: • Have been told not to by a regional health authority or doctor.

• Have diarrhea or have had diarrhea in the past two weeks.

• Have an infectious or communicable disease, sores, and / or wounds.

• Are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Our aqua fitness classes are 50 minutes in length and are led by a team of highlyqualified instructors. The components of all fitness classes include: a warm up, cardiovascular conditioning, muscle and core strengthening, and stretching. There is an average of 16 aqua fitness classes that run weekly. They vary in intensity and fitness level so as to meet the needs and abilities of all our adult and older members.

Aqua Variety A challenging class offering a variety of formats and styles from week to week. This class will rotate from equipment use classes to interval training, tether and a taste of aqua healing.

Aqua Zen A shallow water aquafit experience that encourages peace and vitality through a variety of movements that inspires harmony within the mind, body and spirit. This holistic, wellness-based class focuses on mindfulness and range of motion while improving balance and body awareness. Find your zen while receiving all of the tranquility that the water has to offer.

As You Choose Participants are free to choose to work out in the deep water wearing a flotation belt or in the shallow water with their feet on the floor.

With careful attention and preparation, the instructor is able to teach to all participants.

Deep Water Workout Wearing a floatation belt, you submerge yourself in the deep end of a pool for a deep water workout! While your deep water aerobics class has a low impact on your joints, it has an enormous impact on your cardiovascular system with the help of the resistance in the water. Class formats may vary between Tabata, circuit, boot camp or interval.

Shallow Water Workout Activate your aqua urge for exercise! This class is held in the pool’s shallow end in chest-deep water so your feet are always touching the floor. Shallow water workouts improve agility, coordination, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Equipment may be used to develop strength and balance.

Tether Deep Water Workout Aquafit enthusiasts will benefit from this fun cardiovascular workout in the deep water!

There is a strong focus on core stability while performing deep water moves which will result in increased intensity. Participants will find themselves tethered to a lane rope with a bungee cord attached to a belt. Great for beginner to advanced!

Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to progress you toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them.

Cardio Tabata. A fierce interval class of high intensity cardio alternating with intervals of weights and core, improving your overall fitness. If you want variety and good music, this is your class!

Circuit45. Take your fitness to the next level in this explosive, ever-changing, full body workout. HIIT intervals are used to boost metabolism and improve aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

Step/HiLo Explosion. Mix it up and get the variety you crave in this energetic class featuring 15 minutes each of step, hi/low choreography, resistance and core training.

Challenge the brain and the body!

BODY & MIND Barre. Ballet-based fitness with weight intervals and core conditioning. This class will lengthen, strengthen, and tone your thighs, arms, abdominals, and glutes. For all levels.

Gentle Yoga. Designed for those who prefer a slower paced or more relaxed practice, as well as those with minor physical ailments.

Includes beginning yoga postures and principles of body alignment and breath awareness. Modifications are provided to ensure that poses are accessible for anyone.

Pilates. A mat class blending core strength, flexibility, and alignment. Create long, lean muscles and improve body awareness. All levels welcome!

CHOREOGRAPHY

Vitality Stretch. Enjoy this slow-paced stretch and flexibility class. We stretch with purpose to renew length and balance in our bodies.

HIGH Fitness. Aerobics HIGHer! Experience a modern twist on aerobics in a non-stop, action-packed mix of cardio and toning tracks that will take your fitness to the next level. Simple, choreographed tracks make HIGH fitness easy to follow and a ton of fun.

Adaptable to all levels of fitness, you can go high or you can go low but you will always leave feeling HIGH!

YogaBarre. Your favourite yoga class meets a core-focused barre workout for the ultimate fitness experience. Intense yet easy to follow, this class gives you a full body workout. It combines yoga and barre moves to target smaller muscle groups, challenge your muscles and balance, and leave you energized.

Yang/Yin Yoga. This all-levels class opens to the beautiful energy of a gentle flow class; moving through postures to explore and nurture joints and muscles. The practice then slows into a yin style to relax and calm the mind. Passive poses are held longer, allowing us to tap into thedeeper tissues in the body.

Yoga Level1. Poses focus on alignment offering practitioners the opportunity to gain strength, stamina, flexibility and mindfulness.

CHOREOGRAPHY Cardio Remix. This class will boost your endorphins and leave you smiling! Feel-good, fun, cardio intervals might be plyometric (muscle building), high impact or low impact – but they’ll always leave you sweating and smiling. We add a dash of strength training so you’re set for the day.

HIGHLow + YO. Old school aerobics with a thoroughly modern twist! Enjoy 25 minutes of energetic, choreographed HiLo aerobics followed by 25 minutes of stretching, core, and balance to work and lengthen every part of your body. A fun, lighthearted, music-driven class that will leave you feeling amazing!

Reggae Tone. This class is all about the music! A fun, dance-based cardio class for all levels that incorporates Reggae, Calypso, Soca, and Afro Beats music mixed with contemporary tunes. Modifications provided to make this class inclusive to many abilities and ages. We finishe with 10 minutes of core, strength work, and a stretch.

Zumba®. Join the party! Latin flavor, hi and low impact, dance-based movement to awesome music will make you forget it’s a workout! No experienced needed.

GROUPX STUDIO

Yoga Flow. Physical postures (asanas) combined with inhales and exhales, create a steady internal rhythm. This class places a strong focus on the power of breath awareness, designed to cultivate heat in the body with creative sequences involving sun salutations, standing, seated, and balancing postures. Moderately intense, this class is open to all levels with modifications given.

HIGHLow. A throwback to the old school days of HiLo Aerobics, bringing the same energy, intensity, and effectiveness of a HIGH Fitness class with lower impact. The same songs and choreography are used but without burpees and tuck jumps! Low impact options will be demonstrated first, followed by higher levels of impact so people can choose their preferred level of impact.

EverFit. This gentle moving class will help improve overall fitness including strength, balance, and cardiovascular health. Options are provided for all levels.

Spin. Fire up your cardio fitness in this supersweaty cycling workout!

SCULPTING

Sunrise Spin. Wake up and welcome the new day with an explosion of energy, music, and good vibes! An invigorating mix of high energy drills, interval training, and strength rides, this class will build muscle and kick your cardio training into high gear.

GROUPX STUDIO

ABSolutely! Targeted movements and cardio focus on firming and strengthening your entire core – abdominals, hips, glutes, lower back, and thighs. Balance, stability and posture are enhanced; all levels welcome.

Dumbbell HIIT. Take your fitness to the next level! Dumbbells and other portable equipment are used in this explosive strength-based full body workout. HIIT boosts metabolism and improves aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

Tone & Sculpt. Shape, tone, and define your muscles using a variety of fitness equipment including weighted bars, free weights, and exercise balls. Target every muscle group for a total-body toning workout – improving strength, balance, and coordination while defining muscles.

Spin & Pump. Spin into shape and then challenge your major muscle groups with weights and core strengthening.

Living

Active Living program is designed specifically for people living with any type of chronic condition. Our trained and talented instructors are careful to offer modifications which address the individual needs of participants, while ensuring that all of the major components of a fitness class are included. The Active Living monthly membership gives access to both in-person, Zoom classes and Aqua Fitness. If you prefer, a Zoom only membership is available. Gentle Chair Yoga* Bring out your inner Yogi! This class will have you doing all of the wonderful things in traditional yoga, but in a gentler way. We get it – some days, getting down on the ground is not easy.

We want your body to feel amazing and safe through guided stretches and yoga flows while you sit comfortably in a chair.

Get Going Features walking, seated and standing movement for the cardio component.

Strength, balance and flexibility training are done seated or standing behind a chair. Join us for a functional fitness class to help with the various activities of everyday living.

Urban Poling* Indoor / Outdoor walking with activator poles. A great prescription for overall health, wellness, and rehabilitation for EVERYONE. The use of speciallydesigned activator poles improves your balance, core strength, posture, and reduces impact on joints. Poles provided by the JCC for your use in each class.

Keep Going This class is for adults with a chronic condition who are looking for a little more challenge, but still want a low impact class that is easy on the joints.

The entire class is done standing and offers various formats to keep it interesting.

Golden Rhythms* Enjoy music and movement in this fun class. Most choreography is done seated with an option to stand for those who prefer. Easy Going This class is geared toward adults who are looking for a gentler approach to fitness. The warm up and strength training are done while seated. Because weight-bearing exercise is so important, walking, posture (against a wall) and balance (holding on to a dance bar) will be done standing.
