NEW Kids Art Classes Ages 4-6 Join Hanna’s Studio for creative and playful opportunities to discover what different art materials can do and how to use them for creative self-expression. Your child’s ideas will grow through imaginative art experiences, investigating colour and value, line, texture, shape and form, space, and mark making. We will develop their skills and technique, helping participants learn to see in new ways, and create exciting artwork. Each course session incorporates new projects so you can sign up for multiple sessions in a year.

NEW Board Games Galore Ages 4-6 Are your kids crazy for board games? Then join us for an hour of fun sharing our favourites! A great deal of learning takes place through play, and board games have significant benefits for kids – both socially and academically – offering opportunities for early learning. Simple games help young players identify colours, count spaces, and develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity in moving cards and pieces around the board. Plus, learning to wait your turn and follow the rules are important lessons.

YOUTH

Dungeons and Dragons is a game unlike any other – it’s driven by the imaginations of the groups that sit down to play it. However, it can be daunting to start, with a thick rule book and seemingly complex system of dice rolls and math. This course aims to give you all the knowledge you need to start playing and creating in D&D. We’ll cover the basics of play, game rules, and character creation and development. Through playing the game, concepts such as focus, cooperation, problem-solving, leadership, risk-assessment, mathematics, writing, and live storytelling can all be explored in an exciting and engaging environment. By the end of nine weeks, you will have a full character ready to play in any game of D&D, a basic grasp of the rules of play, an understanding on how to create your own adventures, and hopefully have your imaginations sparked!

NEW Save the Drama! Ages 9-12 Do you have stories to tell? This new theatre class will provide participants with a chance to develop confidence and public speaking skills while exercising your creativity muscles. Through ensemble-building theatre games and playmaking exercises, you will develop original performances that tell your stories about the issues that are important to you. The nine-week session will culminate with a sharing for the community.

YOUTH & TEENS

Teen Connect is the BBYO type experience made just for grade 7 and 8 students offering social and meaningful experiences that will serve as a gateway to continued involvement in Jewish life. Teen Connect offers teens a variety of experiences to help bridge the gap between middle school and high school. The purpose is to provide middle school students with a positive experience in which they can get together with camp, school, and synagogue friends, as well as meet new friends. Teen Connect allows middle school students to begin experiencing the privileges and obligations of being a member of the Jewish and general communities. A heavy focus is on the social aspect of programing, allowing for connections to be made which in turn will foster a stronger Jewish future. Teen Connect is a pipeline program that leads directly into BBYO.

With year-round activities in hundreds of local communities and inspiring world-wide travel experiences, BBYO’s broad program menu enables teens to explore areas of social interactions, leadership, service, civic engagement, Israel education and Jewish values. Jewish Calendar 101 January - March 2022 | Tevet - Nissan 5782* * Holidays begin at sundown on the evening before and conclude at sundown on the noted day.

Purim

Tu B'Shevat

January 17 | 15 Shevat

Also known as the New Year of the Trees because it was used for calculating the age of trees for tithing. The Torah teaches that fruit from a tree may not be eaten during the first three years; the fourth year’s fruit is for G-d, and after this, the fruit can be eaten. It is customary to eat a new fruit on this holiday or to eat from the Seven Species (shivat haminim) that are abundant in Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Some people also plant trees on this day. Tu B’Shevat began as a minor holiday marked by a festive meal and it has grown into the a modern Jewish Earth Day. It is an opportunity to celebrate our sense of environmental responsibility and Jewish tradition. Come celebrate this holiday at the JCC. See details on page 27.

Fast of Esther March 16 | 13 Adar II

This fast, also called Ta’anit Esther, is a fast from dawn until dusk on Purim eve, commemorating the three-day fast observed by the Jewish people in the story of Purim.

March 17 | 14 Adar II

This jolly festivity commemorates the defeat of Haman’s plot, the prime minister of King Ahasuerus of the Persian Empire. During 357 BCE, Haman planned to massacre the Jews, as recorded in the book of Esther in the Torah. The Jews were saved by the heroic Queen Esther, who married the king. When Ahasueros discovers that his wife Esther is Jewish, he decides to reverse Haman’s decree, and instead of the Jews being killed, Haman, his sons, and other enemies are killed instead. We celebrate dressing up in costume, some people choose to dress as characters from the Purim story. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to listen to the story of Purim – chanted from Megillat Esther (The Scroll of Esther). We also send mishloach manot, packages of treats and goodies to friends, family, and people in need. A traditional cookie called hamentaschen is enjoyed, which our Golden Age (seniors) group at the JCC bake every year!

Shushan Purim March 18 | 15 Adar II

The battles fought between the Jews and their enemies throughout the Persian empire took place on Adar 13. The Jews rested and celebrated the victory on the following day – Adar 14. In the capital of the empire, the city of Shushan, however, there were a greater number of Jew-haters, so the fighting continued for two days: 13 and 14 Adar. The victory celebrations in Shushan were thus held on 15 Adar.

The reformer offers all the benefits of Pilates including overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance – but the reformer takes exercises to the next level by adding resistance and leverage. Pilates reformer sessions are comprehensive, full-body workouts that focus on core strength and proper muscle engagement which improves athletic performance, injury recovery, weight loss, balance, and bone density – supporting proper spinal alignment. The reformer’s set-up for eccentric contraction is one of the keys to achieving the long, strong muscles without bulk for which Pilates is known. Pilates reformer classes are low impact and adaptable making them open to all ages and levels of fitness and exercise experience. Reformer work benefits everyone from elite athletes to people with a more sedentary lifestyle. Two to three sessions a week are recommended to start. Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to progress you toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them.

For class descriptions and more info visit: jcccycling.com or email trev@thedoctrine.ca

We progress through the winter season with structured, coached classes. We don’t make pretty sets of choreography to simply pass the time. We spend our precious time in the saddle getting more competent on the bike. We get pumped about challenging ourselves, riding outside, and maybe participating in an event. There are no egos – everyone is the same speed on a trainer. The bottom line: good company, great music, and smart sessions.

Qi Gong uses meditation using breathing, visualization, simple body movements, and sound to help balance energy. This gentle-moving meditation is a grounding practice that promotes focus, calmness, and peace of mind. This practice is easy to learn and can be done by everyone, at any age, and fitness level. Class begins with gentle warm-up exercises that include light bouncing, and tapping and cupping energy points in the body to stimulate energy flow to prepare the body for the session. The warm-up is followed by approximately 30 minutes of mindful movement practice, which can be done in a standing or seated position. Class concludes with a seated, guided meditation that is typically 10 to 15 minutes in duration.
