A Message from Rhona Shore Executive Director

W

e are thrilled that we were able to offer three uninterrupted sessions of programming at the Paperny Family JCC! We welcomed new families to our childcare and children’s departments, hosted monthly virtual luncheons with entertainment for our Golden Age seniors group, celebrated Jewish holidays with a variety of interactive programs, kept our Active Living and PWR! Moves participants moving and engaged, and provided numerous exercise opportunities within our Crossfit, aquatics, GroupX, and weight room departments. The last two years have taught us how important it is to be able to adapt to change. We have done this together with the support and commitment of our JCC members. Our spring guide is filled with an exciting assortment of programs for individuals Staff. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 Building Information. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Registration . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 Membership. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 Childcare. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 Babysitting. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 Children. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13 Youth. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17 Teens. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20

SPRING 2022 TEENS

YOUTH & TEENS

Teen Connect is the BBYO type experience made just for grade 7 and 8 students offering social and meaningful experiences that will serve as a gateway to continued involvement in Jewish life. Teen Connect offers teens a variety of experiences to help bridge the gap between middle school and high school. The purpose is to provide middle school students with a positive experience in which they can get together with camp, school, and synagogue friends, as well as meet new friends. Teen Connect allows middle school students to begin experiencing the privileges and obligations of being a member of the Jewish and general communities. A heavy focus is on the social aspect of programing, allowing for connections to be made which in turn will foster a stronger Jewish future. Teen Connect is a pipeline program that leads directly into BBYO.

With year-round activities in hundreds of local communities and inspiring world-wide travel experiences, BBYO’s broad program menu enables teens to explore areas of social interactions, leadership, service, civic engagement, Israel education and Jewish values. Sefirat HaOmer

Counting of the Omer April 16-June 4 | 15 Nissan-5 Sivan

We count the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot because it took seven weeks to reach Mount Sinai and receive the Torah. Each day of the Counting of the Omer represents spiritual preparation in anticipation of receiving the Torah.

Yom HaShoah

This day commemorates the approximately six million Jews and others who perished in the Holocaust due to Nazi Germany. For ceremony details check jewishcalgary.org.

Yom HaZikaron Israel’s Memorial Day May 4 | 3 Iyar

Yom HaAtzmaut Israel’s Independence Day May 5 | 4 Iyar

Join us at the JCC as we celebrate the State of Israel’s 74th anniversary with a great party! Details on the next page.

Shavuot

The Feast of Weeks June 5-6 | 6-7 Sivan

A doubly significant holiday, marking Israel’s wheat harvest, and also commemorating when the Torah was given to the nation of Israel at Mount Sinai.

Israel dedicates this day of remembrance to the memory of those who have fallen in defence of the State of Israel and to the Victims of Terror. Join us online for a heartfelt ceremony. Sources: myjewishlearning.org and chabad.org

Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to progress you toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them.

For class descriptions and more info visit: jcccycling.com or email trev@thedoctrine.ca

We progress through the winter season with structured, coached classes. We don’t make pretty sets of choreography to simply pass the time. We spend our precious time in the saddle getting more competent on the bike. We get pumped about challenging ourselves, riding outside, and maybe participating in an event. There are no egos – everyone is the same speed on a trainer. The bottom line: good company, great music, and smart sessions.

Easy Going This class is geared toward adults who are looking for a gentler approach to fitness. The warm up and strength training are done while seated. Keep Going This class is for adults with a chronic condition who are looking for a little more challenge, but still want a low impact class that is easy on the joints. The entire class is done standing and offers various formats to keep it interesting. Get Going Features walking, seated and standing movement for the cardio component. Strength, balance and flexibility training are done seated or standing behind a chair. Join us for a functional fitness class to help with the various activities of everyday living. Tuesdays and Fridays feature extra focus on balance and strength training.

Gentle Chair Yoga This class is perfect for participants looking for a softer approach. Enjoy moving in and out of poses slowly with a focus on breathing, strengthening, and stretching exercises. We will explore breath work to promote relaxation. Urban Poling Indoor / Outdoor walking with activator poles. A great prescription for overall health, wellness, and rehabilitation for EVERYONE. The use of speciallydesigned activator poles improves your balance, core strength, posture, and reduces impact on joints. Poles provided by the JCC for your use in each class.
