A Message from Lynne Preston Executive Director

W

e are extremely excited to announce that our J•Factory CrossFit (page 38) box is now open, with an option to sign up for unlimited classes every day of the week! Come try out this challenging workout which caters to all fitness levels and experience. We have also launched a Pilates (page 37) program with Corrina, who is a Redcord Intuitive Rehabilitationist, RMT, and Pilates Specialist. Corrina is able to design programs that improve posture and fitness, assist with your rehabilitation process at all stages, and guide your body to feel longer and leaner. If you are a new mom and looking for ways of getting back into your exercise routine, we have some great new programs for you to register for, with your baby. Be sure to check out Yoga Mama and Bloom Baby (page 12) for mamas and mamas-to-be, which is suitable for all levels. If you are looking for a more dynamic workout, why not give Barre Baby (page 12) a try? This class is a hybrid of ballet, yoga, classic dance training, and free weights that will help you sculpt a shapely physique. You can try out both of these classes for free on January 8 and 9, respectively. We also have a great, new music program for your baby: Suzuki Baby (page 12), where your child will learn through music and movement. There is a great line-up of cultural programs coming up including our Chai Notes Concert (page 27) and annual Jewish Book Festival (page 27). For a unique Second Seder experience, join us for Pesach in the

Mountains (page 27) at the Wilderness Hostel in Kananaskis for a kosher-style, catered dinner and breakfast. Planning a Staycation (page 5)? Then pack the family and head south(west) for the winter! Take a break from the cold and warm up in our salt water pool, sauna, and hot tub! Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who participated in our 40th Anniversary celebration. This was truly a walk down memory lane, as well as an opportunity to honour the Paperny family and all of the community members who worked so hard to turn their dream of a Jewish gathering place into a reality. Check out our Count to 40 video at: calgaryjcc.com/anniversary See you at the JCC!

Jewish Calendar 101 January - March 2020 | Tevet - Nissan 5780*

* Holidays begin at sundown on the evening before and conclude at sundown on the noted day.

Fast of Tevet January 7 | 10 Tevet

This fast commemorates the siege of Jerusalem in 587 BCE by Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylonia – an event that began on that date and culminated in the destruction of Solomon’s Temple (the First Temple) and the conquest of the Kingdom of Judah (today southern Israel.) One of the minor fasts observed from dawn to nightfall.

Tu B'Shevat

February 10 | 15 Shevat

Also known as the New Year of the Trees because it was used for calculating the age of trees for tithing. The Torah teaches that fruit from a tree may not be eaten during the first three years; the fourth year’s fruit is for G-d, and after this, the fruit can be eaten. It is customary to eat a new fruit on this holiday or to eat from the Seven Species (shivat haminim) that are abundant in Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Some people also plant trees on this day. Tu B’Shevat began as a minor holiday marked by a festive meal and it has grown into the a modern Jewish Earth Day. It is an opportunity to celebrate our sense of environmental responsibility and Jewish tradition. Come celebrate this holiday at the JCC. See details on page 27.

Fast of Easter March 9 | 13 Adar

This fast, also called Ta’anit Esther, is a fast from dawn until dusk on Purim eve, commemorating the three-day fast observed by the Jewish people in the story of Purim.

Purim

March 10 | 14 Adar

This jolly festivity commemorates the defeat of Haman’s plot, the prime minister of King Ahasuerus of the Persian Empire. During 357 BCE, Haman planned to massacre the Jews, as recorded in the book of Esther in the Torah. The Jews were saved by the heroic Queen Esther, who married the king. When Ahasueros discovers that his wife Esther is Jewish, he decides to reverse Haman’s decree, and instead of the Jews being killed, Haman, his sons, and other enemies are killed instead. We celebrate dressing up in costume, some people choose to dress as characters from the Purim story. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to listen to the story of Purim – chanted from Megillat Esther (The Scroll of Esther). We also send mishloach manot, packages of treats and goodies to friends, family, and people in need. A traditional cookie called hamentaschen is enjoyed, which our Golden Age (seniors) group at the JCC bake every year!

Shushan Purim March 11 | 15 Adar

The battles fought between the Jews and their enemies throughout the Persian empire took place on Adar 13. The Jews rested and celebrated the victory on the following day – Adar 14. In the capital of the empire, the city of Shushan, however, there were a greater number of Jew-haters, so the fighting continued for two days: 13 and 14 Adar. The victory celebrations in Shushan were thus held on 15 Adar.

For over a decade, Corrina has been teaching, practicing, and guiding those who have made the decision to get out of pain, stay out of pain, and have a better sense of balance. After studying massage therapy, trigger point and active release therapy, she wanted to learn more; not only how to manually help the body, but also how to empower her clients to maintain their bodies through movement. This led to certification in Iyengar Yoga Levels 1 and 2, Stott Pilates (ISP), Neuromuscular Redcord Active training, and Anatomy Trains manual and movement certifications. She also became a Fletcher Matwork Licensed Provider. Corrina also ventured into OsteoPilates and body rolling techniques and obtained certifications in both. She also studied – and continues to study – energy rebalancing, qigong, and shamanism. All of the above happened after Corrina was hit by a truck and a light bulb went off that said… LIFE IS TOO SHORT.

Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to progress you toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them. We progress through the winter season with structured, coached classes. We don’t make pretty sets of choreography to simply pass the time. We spend our precious time in the saddle getting more competent on the bike. We get pumped about challenging ourselves, riding outside, and maybe participating in an event. There are no egos – everyone is the same speed on a trainer. The bottom line: good company, great music, and smart sessions. Easy Going This class is geared toward adults who are looking for a gentler approach to fitness. The warm up and strength training are done while seated. Because weight baring exercise is so important, walking, posture (against a wall) and balance (holding on to a dance bar) will be done standing.
