A Message from Lynne Preston Executive Director

S

pring time marks new beginnings which makes it a great time to try something new at the JCC – we have programs for every age group! Our new Dance PL3Y program for kids four to six years (page 15) as well as youth seven years and older (page 19), is a high-energy, play-based program which fuses dance, fitness, and rhythm-based moves in simple combinations. We heard you, and have scheduled new times for our Kids Yoga (page15) and Youth Yoga (page 17) classes to provide greater convenience for parents; check out our new Kids Drone Zone (page 20) class that inspires curiosity in science, technology, engineering, math, and truly make physics fun! This program is led by Nicholas Dotchin, physicist and certified UAV pilot. With summer now just around the corner, this is a great time to enhance your kids’ swimming skills by enrolling them in group lessons offered by Swimland (page 30). However, if your child would prefer one-onone attention, the JCC offers Private Swim Lessons (page 34) as well. Calgary JCC is a participating charity in Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink. All donations made through Birdies for Kids will be matched up to 50% making your donation go even further!

While the kids are busy, why not try a CrossFit class (page 42) or our new Neuro Rehab (NR) class (page 40), which is not your typical exercise class? NR will teach you how to care for your posture, spine, pelvic floor, neuromuscular system, and muscular skeletal system. Or you can relax and wander through our Exhibit of Memorabilia (page 26) from the early years of the State of Israel, as well as check out our Humans of JCC Photo Exhibit (page 26). If you’re looking for a unique way to spend time with family and friends over Passover, a new experience is our Second Seder in Kananaskis at the Wilderness Hostel. Pesach in the Mountains (page 27) includes onenight accommodation along with a delicious Seder dinner, outdoor self-guided hike, forest meditations, campfire, and more! May the coming change of season bring a spring to your step, and lead you to the JCC! Pilates with Corrina Anne-Poss

Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement

Redcord Intuitive Rehabilitationist, RMT, and Pilates Specialist

Join us as we learn simple yet effective movement sequences that free up our minds, ease our bodies, and give us new ideas on how to feel more potent and alive. Each class is different, yet relaxing, and provides ideas that you can use in the days following the class to reduce your stress and discomfort. We meet on the floor, so be sure to wear comfortable clothing; bring a towel for support.

For over a decade, Corrina has been teaching, practicing, and guiding those who have made the decision to get out of pain, stay out of pain, and have a better sense of balance. After studying massage therapy, trigger point and active release therapy, she wanted to learn more; not only how to manually help the body, but also how to empower her clients to maintain their bodies through movement. This led to certification in Iyengar Yoga Levels 1 and 2, Stott Pilates (ISP), Neuromuscular Redcord Active training, and Anatomy Trains manual and movement certifications. She also became a Fletcher Matwork Licensed Provider. Corrina also ventured into OsteoPilates and body rolling techniques and obtained certifications in both. She also studied – and continues to study – energy rebalancing, qigong, and shamanism. All of the above happened after Corrina was hit by a truck and a light bulb went off that said… LIFE IS TOO SHORT. Using Pilates techniques along side massage therapy techniques, a personalized Pilates program is available for you. Corrina is able to design programs that benefit your posture and fitness, assist with your rehabilitation process at all stages, and allows your body to feel longer and leaner. Book now to reserve your spot! Twice a week is the best way to go at the start. Corrina is accepting clients on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 12:00 noon. Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to progress you toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them. We progress through the winter season with structured, coached classes. We don’t make pretty sets of choreography to simply pass the time. We spend our precious time in the saddle getting more competent on the bike. We get pumped about challenging ourselves, riding outside, and maybe participating in an event. There are no egos – everyone is the same speed on a trainer. The bottom line: good company, great music, and smart sessions. Living

Active Living classes are designed specifically for people who have any type of chronic condition. Trained and talented instructors are careful to offer modifications that address the needs of our participants in classes that include all of the major components of a fitness class. There is a user fee for this program. Our punch card system allows participants the flexibility to attend whichever classes they want each week. Punch cards may be purchased at our Customer Service Desk. Please contact LeAnne Crane with any questions at lcrane@cjcc ca.

Keep Going This class is for adults with a chronic condition who are looking for a little more challenge, but still want a low impact class that is easy on the joints. The entire class is done standing and offers various formats to keep it interesting.

Get Going Features walking, seated and standing movement for the cardio component. Strength, balance and flexibility training are done seated or standing behind a chair. Join us for a functional fitness class to help with the various activities of everyday living. Tuesdays and Fridays feature extra focus on balance and strength training. Gentle Chair Yoga This class is perfect for participants looking for a softer approach. Enjoy moving in and out of poses slowly with a focus on breathing, strengthening, and stretching exercises. We will explore breath work to promote relaxation.

GOLDEN AGE

Easy Going This class is geared toward adults who are looking for a gentler approach to fitness. The warm up and strength training are done while seated. Because weight baring exercise is so important, walking, posture (against a wall) and balance (holding on to a dance bar) will be done standing.
