A Message from Lynne Preston Executive Director

T

here’s no time for the winter blues when you’re at the JCC! Our newly renovated pool and hot tub is the perfect place to spend the day. As well, the gym floor has been resurfaced so come out and shoot some hoops, hit a few tennis balls, or score a few goals! As you think ahead to your New Year’s resolutions, our annual Fit Week (page 2) kicks off January 14-20. Join the fitness challenge and check out our featured vendors throughout the week. We are excited to announce our newest sports and rec program, Intro to Fencing (page 19). Considered to be the ‘European martial art’, fencing allows participants to develop coordination, balance, and flexibility – making it good for the body and mind. Are you or someone you know expecting a baby in early 2019? Our Pre-Natal Breastfeeding program (page 45) is ideal for women who are 30-38 weeks pregnant. Learn about a wide range of topics including the benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies and the importance of the “golden hour”. Come discover the beautiful works of Betzalel artist, Anna Pederson, who will be showcasing her art at the JCC

from January 14 to February 24. Find out more about Betzalel Arts on page 26. Throughout the winter months, we are offering a variety of new and informative seniors seminars such as, Let’s Talk About Driving, Home Safety Fixes, and Balancing Stress when Taking Care of an Aging Loved One (page 52). Finally, be sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, June 13 as we are pleased to welcome Jarome Iginla for the 30th anniversary of our JCC Sports Dinner (page 56). See you at the JCC!

Teen connect TEENS

Teen Connect is the BBYO type experience made just for grade 7 and 8 students offering social and meaningful experiences that will serve as a gateway to continued involvement in Jewish life. Teen Connect offers teens a variety of experiences to help bridge the gap between middle school and high school. The purpose is to provide middle school students with a positive experience in which they can get together with camp, school, and synagogue friends, as well as meet new friends. Teen Connect allows middle school students to begin experiencing the privileges and obligations of being a member of the Jewish and general communities. A heavy focus is on the social aspect of programing, allowing for connections to be made which in turn will foster a stronger Jewish future. ARTS & CULTURE

ARTS AND CULTURE

Jewish Calendar 101 January - March 2019 | Shevat - Adar 5779*

*Note all holidays start on the preceding eve and conclude at sundown.

Tu B'Shevat

January 21 | 15 Shevat Tu B’Shevat is also known as the New Year of the Trees because it was used for calculating the age of trees for tithing. The Torah teaches that fruit from a tree may not be eaten during the first three years; the fourth year’s fruit is for G-d, and after this, you can eat the fruit. It is customary to eat a new fruit on this holiday or to eat from the Seven Species (shivat haminim) that are abundant in Israel. The Seven Species are: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Some people also plant trees on this day. Tu B’Shevat began as a minor holiday marked by a festive meal and it has grown into a modern Jewish Earth Day. It is an opportunity to celebrate our growing sense of environmental responsibility and Jewish tradition.

Fast of Esther

March 20 | 13 Adar Taanit Esther is a dawn to nightfall fast on the day before Purim that commemorates how our ancestors fasted for three days in the Purim story. It is not one of the four public fasts ordained by the prophets.

Purim

March 21 | 14 Adar PThis jolly festivity commemorates the defeat of Haman’s plot, the prime minister of King Ahasuerus of the Persian Empire. During 357 BCE, Haman planned to massacre the Jews, as recorded in the book of Esther in the Torah. The Jews were saved by the heroic Queen Esther, who married Ahasuerus. When Ahasuerus discovers that his wife Esther is Jewish, he decides to reverse Haman’s decree, and instead of the Jews being killed, Haman, his sons, and other enemies are killed instead. We celebrate dressing up in costume, some people choose to dress as characters from the Purim story. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to listen to the story of Purim chanted from Megillat Esther (“The Scroll of Esther”). We also send Mishloach manot, packages of treats and goodies to friends and family. A traditional cookie is eaten called Hamentaschen, which our seniors department at the JCC bake every year!

Shushan Purim

March 22 | 15 Adar The battles fought between the Jews and their enemies throughout the Persian empire took place on Adar 13. The Jews rested and celebrated the victory on the following day, Adar 14. However, the fighting lasted longer in the Persian capital of Shushan. The victory celebration wsa held on the 15th of Adar in Shushan.

Aquafitness Class Descriptions As You Choose Participants are free to choose to work out in the deep water wearing a flotation belt or in the shallow water with their feet on the floor. With careful attention and preparation, the instructor is able to teach to all participants.

Aqua Variety A challenging class offering a variety of formats and styles. May include deep water workout, Tabata, tether, interval, boot camp, circuit, shallow or Aqua Zen.

Deep Water Workout Wearing a floatation belt, you submerge yourself in the deep end of a pool for a deep water workout! While your deep water aerobics class has a low impact on your joints, it has an enormous impact on your cardiovascular system with the help of the resistance in the water. Class formats may vary between Tabata, circuit, boot camp or interval.

Aqua Zen A shallow water aquafitness experience that encourages peace and vitality through a variety of movements that inspires harmony within the mind, body and spirit. This holistic, wellness-based class focuses on mindfulness and range of motion while improving balance and body awareness. Find your zen while receiving all of the tranquility that the water has to offer.

Shallow Water Workout Activate your aqua urge for exercise! This class is held in the pool’s shallow end in chest-deep water so your feet are always touching the floor. Shallow water workouts improve agility, coordination, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Equipment may be used to develop strength and balance. Tether Deep Water Workout Aquafit enthusiasts will benefit from this fun cardiovascular workout in the deep water! There is a strong focus on core stability while performing deep water moves which will result in increased intensity. Participants will find themselves tethered to a lane rope with a bungee cord attached to a belt. Great for beginner to advanced!

Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to prepare you to progress toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them. We progress through the winter season with structured progressive classes. We don’t make pretty sets simply to pass the time. We spend our precious time in the saddle getting more competent on the bike. We get pumped about training hard, riding outside, and maybe participating in an event. There are no egos – everyone is the same speed on a trainer. The bottom line: good company, great music, and smart sessions. Living

Active Living classes are designed specifically for people who have any type of chronic condition; modifications are offered to address the needs of our participants. We are careful to include all of the major components of a fitness program. All classes are registered programs – sign up today at the Customer Service Desk. Please contact LeAnne Crane with any questions at 403-444-3176 or lcrane@cjcc.ca. Easy Going (2 classes/week) This class is geared toward adults who are looking for a gentler approach to fitness. The warm up and strength training are done while seated. Because weight baring exercise is so important, walking, posture (against a wall) and balance (holding on to a dance bar) will be done standing.

Chair Dancing (Fridays) If you enjoy music and movement, join us in the gym where we pretend to “close the blinds” and “dance like no one is watching”. No experience is necessary! Most choreography is done seated with an option to stand for those who prefer. This class is complimentary with your Active Living Punch card.
