A Message from Lynne Preston Executive Director

W

e have a number of exciting new programs to introduce to you this fall! For the younger kids, there is Pre-School Dance and Pre-Primary and Modern Dance (page 15), as well as an Israeli Folk Dancing (page 15) class for the entire family. For the 9-12 age group, we are introducing a new, hands-on class called: Kids Drone Zone (page 21), that introduces the physics of flight, electronics, photography, mapping, racing, and much more – watch your child’s imagination take flight! Another new class for your teen to try is TET: Team Environment Training (page 21), a specialized training program that enhances individual skill sets to achieve stronger physical performances while building both strong foundations and teamwork.

Swimland (page 31) will be launching at the JCC in the fall; they will be running all our learnto-swim group classes. For more details, go to their website: Swimland.ca. There will be priority registration for JCC members, and all registrations will be taken directly by Swimland. The JCC will continue to run private swim lessons, as well as certifications courses including Bronze Star, Bronze Cross, Bronze Medallion, and the National Lifeguard (pages 33-35).

We are proud to introduce Corinna AnnePoss, a Redcord Intuitive Rehabilitationist, RMT, and Pilates Specialist. Using Pilates (page 39) techniques alongside massage therapy techniques, a personalized program is available for you.

Our new RowHouse (page 42) class will challenges you to a whole new level of fitness using rowing machines for cardio, along with mat work, and strength exercises. The AquaBox (page 42) introduces the “new school” philosophy of boxing, while FitFlow (page 42) provides

the perfect balance of strength building, coordination, and balance exercises to both challenge you and increase mobility. Find out more about our PWR! Moves (page 45) program designed for people with Parkinson’s.

We are extremely excited to announce that CrossFit (page 41) is coming to the JCC! CrossFit is designed for all fitness levels and experience, so no need to be intimidated. Our new on-site specialist, Austin Boje, is looking forward to sharing his love for CrossFit with the community!

The fall session promises to be a busy one for our Golden Age group, with a High Tea on Sunday, October 27 (page 52), our first ever Community Challah Bake on Thursday, November 14 (page 53), and annual Chanukah Lunch on Tuesday, December 10 (page 51).

Marc Gorimbao – Facility Operations Marc recently joined the maintenance team earlier this spring and has been a welcomed addition to our JCC staff. After making the move from the Philippines to Calgary in 2011, he studied power engineering at SAIT and comes to the JCC with over four years of experience as a building operator. In his home country, Marc worked for the National Bureau of Investigation as a trained nurse assisting pathologists with autopsies. In his spare time, Marc enjoys travelling, cooking, gardening, playing board games, and playing guitar.

How to Register

Refund Policy

Online registration is now available at mycalgaryjcc.com. Program registration and payment can also be made in person or by phone (403-253-8600, ext.0) with cheque, debit, Visa or MasterCard.

The JCC reserves the right to cancel any program due to lack of enrollment, with a full refund. No refunds will be issued for classes less than eight weeks in length unless a minimum of one week’s notice is provided in writing prior to the class start date. A refund for the price of the class, less a 20% administration fee will be issued.

For programs eight weeks or greater, a pro-rated refund will be issued subject to an administration charge of 20% of the program fee. No refunds are available after the second class of an eight- to 12-week program. For year-round programs and classes, a pro-rated refund will be issued subject to an administration charge of 20% of the full year program fee. Refunds will be issued if the program or service is cancelled by the JCC. No pro-rating is available for absences during programs and services.

No refunds on personal training (and is non-transferable).

• All registrations must be paid in full at the time of registration.

• Membership must be valid throughout the course of the session including full year programs, to receive member rates.

Supervision Policy The JCC requires that an adult must accompany a child under eight at all times.

For children aged eight to 18, parents must use their discretion to determine the level of adult supervision required.

Children eight to 18 may be dropped off unsupervised for short periods, but the JCC reserves the right to require parents to provide supervision. The JCC provides fully supervised camps for school days off.

When swimming, children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult who is “within arms reach” at all times.

Ultimately, the JCC reserves the right to limit access to children under 18 years, following Alberta Children’s Services guidelines.

Membership We accept Visa, MasterCard, cheques, cash, debit and Personally Approved Payment Plan (PAPP). Memberships are not refundable and are non-transferable.

Fee Adjustment Though membership fees are established, the Calgary JCC will not refuse membership to any Jewish individual or family who is unable to pay the appropriate fee in full. For more information, call the JCC Customer Service Desk at 403-253-8600, ext.0.

For those choosing to register in person at the JCC, numbers will be handed out on a first come basis and registration will commence at 8:00am.

Membership Freeze or Medical Hold Members have the option of putting their JCC membership on hold for up to 90 days if they plan to be away from the JCC for any extended period. If you are a snowbird and travel south for the winter, or an avid summer golfer, put your membership on hold for a fee of $25+GST for a Family or Couple membership and $10+GST for Senior, Student and Individual, and have that time added to the tail-end of your membership.

Memberships can only be frozen once per membership year. No refunds will be issued.

Memberships may also be placed on hold for medical needs provided a doctor’s note is submitted to the JCC Customer Service Desk. No fee will be charged. Note: All people falling within the membership unit are subject to the conditions of a membership freeze.

Loss of Membership Privileges The use of physical force against another person or with the intent of damaging JCC property may result in suspension or loss of membership privileges. Verbal abuse will be handled in the same way as physical force, and may also result in suspension or loss of membership privileges.

Guest Passes Members may bring guests to the JCC as often as they wish during the year. Guest passes may be purchased at the JCC Customer Service Desk – limit five per guest.

Passes are valid for one day only (please make note of expiration date).

Your Membership Card Membership cards are non-transferable and must be carried at all times and presented at the JCC Customer Service Desk, and when registering for programs. Contact the JCC Customer Service Desk immediately if your card is lost, stolen or damaged. Replacement cards are available for a $10 fee. All members over the age of eight years must carry a card.

Earn a free Refer a friend to the JCC month! and earn a free month on your next renewal year! When your friend purchases an annual membership an extra month will be added to your next year’s membership just to thank you for spreading the news about the JCC.

Referral Program

Lockers and Change Rooms Full and half lockers are available for daily use at no charge. Membership cards can be used to borrow day locks from the JCC Customer Service Desk. There is a $5 charge for lost locks or tags. Locks left on overnight will be removed and lockers emptied. The JCC will not be responsible for valuables left in or removed from lockers. Out of respect for our members, children six years and older will not be allowed in the locker rooms of their opposite sex. Family change rooms are now available.

Attire We require appropriate attire in all areas of the facilities. Shirts and shoes are required in all areas except the locker rooms. The JCC reserves the right to determine what is appropriate clothing. For safety purposes, proper footwear must be worn in the physical activity spaces. Absolutely no outdoor shoes are permitted in any of the fitness areas.

At JCC BabeCare, caring for your child isn’t a job, it’s a privilege. That’s why we do all we can to ensure your child’s time with us is as fulfilling as possible.

BabeCare offers a variety of activities including:

Nutritious Kosher snacks and meals are provided on a daily basis and our entire staff is fully certified.

NEW Barre Baby Ages 0-10mos Open to all levels, this barre class provides a fun and dynamic workout for moms, resculpting your body as you bond with baby and build social connections. Lose weight while you improve body awareness, flexibility, and strength. This class is a hybrid of ballet, yoga, classic dance training, and free weights that will help you sculpt a shapely physique.

It will help lengthen, strengthen, and tone by targeting four major muscle groups all at once – the thighs, arms, abdominals, and glutes. Our experienced instructors will provide you with modifications for injuries, or challenge and change your body. Bring a baby carrier and baby’s favorite blanket for use during practice.

Just Like Home @ the JCC Programs for 2 Year Olds Calling all moms and dads! The Calgary JCC is offering high quality two year old programs just for you. These programs are a fantastic way to get your toddlers active and engaged with other children their age. Children in our programs get an early jump on their social skills, along with development of their gross and fine motor capabilities. This is also a perfect opportunity to have some “me” time – here’s your chance to socialize and meet other parents, find time to exercise, or just check off some of those pesky chores!

Get your toddlers ahead of the curve, engaging their creative minds, making new friends, and learning to socialize in this program for 2s!

Your children will sing songs, dance, do arts and crafts – while developing friendship bonds with other children their age. Our trained staff provide them with a level of care that makes it feel like a home away from home.

Multi-Sport classes are the heart of Sportball programming. Coaches focus on the basic skills common to all sports such as balance, coordination, stamina, and timing. All done in a fun, supportive, and non-competitive setting that emphasizes teamwork. Welcome to the JCC’s, Ready, Set…3s! program with a curriculum specifically designed for three year olds. This program offers a wide range of activities that prepare children for junior kindergarten the following year. Activities include: crafts, creative movement, drama, science, gross motor play, fine motor focus and interactive play.

Ready, Set…3s encourages socialization, builds self-esteem, and prepares children for a lifetime of learning. The program runs full year from September 2019 to June 2020 and follows the CBE calendar.

NEW Pre-School Dance Ages 3-4 Fun and joyful non-parental dance class for boys and girls that develops a wide range of movement skills. Incorporates Royal Academy of Dance syllabus to encourage creativity, discipline, and concentration as a vital part of preparation for ballet training.

This class will also take part in story book ballet, where children can develop their imagination and feel the connection between story and dance. Lessons incorporate fun props and instruments. Yael Guterman, La Point Dance Studio owner and teacher, will teach your children rhythm, body awareness, and musicality.

Dress for boys: Any style tshirt with black or navy shorts, and white or black leather ballet shoes with matching ankle socks.

Introduction of the classical and modern elements of the foundation of classical ballet.

Israeli culture is made up of many influences: from the Mediterranean, Yemenite, African, and European stylizations. Teen Connect is the BBYO type experience made just for grade 7 and 8 students offering social and meaningful experiences that will serve as a gateway to continued involvement in Jewish life.

Teen Connect offers teens a variety of experiences to help bridge the gap between middle school and high school. The purpose is to provide middle school students with a positive experience in which they can get together with camp, school, and synagogue friends, as well as meet new friends.

Teen Connect allows middle school students to begin experiencing the privileges and obligations of being a member of the Jewish and general communities. A heavy focus is on the social aspect of programing, allowing for connections to be made which in turn will foster a stronger Jewish future. Teen Connect is a pipeline program that leads directly into BBYO.

Sukkot

The saddest day in the Jewish calendar.

The focus of the mourning is on the destruction on this date of both the First Temple (422 BCE) and the Second Temple (68 CE). It is observed as a fast day and mourning laws apply. On the eve of the fast, the scroll of Eichah (Lamentations) is read in the synagogue.

Named after the booths or huts (sukkot in Hebrew) where Jews are supposed to dwell during this week-long celebration.

According to rabbinic tradition, these flimsy sukkot represent the huts in which the Israelites dwelt during their 40 years of wandering in the desert after escaping from slavery in Egypt. The festival of Sukkot is one of the three great pilgrimage festivals of the Jewish year.

This date celebrates the ending of the Jewish people wandering for 40 years in the desert after leaving Egypt. It is also the holiday of love in modern Israel.

High Holidays

September 30-October 9 | 1-10 Tishrei

This holiday is also known as the Ten Days of Awe, where first we celebrate Rosh HaShanah (September 30-October 1 | 1-2 Tishrei) – the head of the new year – and greet each other: Shana Tova Umetuka (Have a good and sweet year).

It is customary to bake round challah, as a metaphor of the cycle of life, and dip pieces in honey. Ten days later, we observe Yom Kippur (October 9 | 10 Tishrei) – the Day of Atonement – a day of spiritual cleansing where we fast and attend synagogue for an entire day of solemn prayer. Between these two dates, there are 10 days where Jews are called to reflect on their shortcomings and transgressions; a period of introspection. During these days it is customary to go to a body of water (preferably with fish), symbolically cast our sins into the water, and leave our past shortcomings behind us, thereby starting the new year with a clean slate. This ritual is called Tashlich.

Shmini Atzeret / Simchat Torah October 21-22 | 22-23 Tishrei

Shmini Atzeret celebrates the last day of Sukkot, while Simchat Torah observes the finishing of the reading of the Torah – the Five Books of Moses – and the immediate beginning of the reading from the first book called Bereshit (Genesis).

In this manner, the annual cycle of Torah readings and studying remains unbroken.

During this holiday, we dance and joyfully parade with the Torah scrolls in the synagogue.

Chanukah

December 23-30 | 25 Kislev-2 Tevet

During Chanukah, we celebrate Juddah and the Maccabees defeating the Greco-Syrian army in 165 BCE. When the Maccabees regained control of the Temple they only found enough oil to light the menorah for one day, yet it miraculously lasted for eight days. This is why we now light a Chanukiyah (a candelabra with nine branches instead of seven) for eight days.

Customs include exchanging gifts, playing dreidel (spin tops), winning or giving gelt (chocolate coins), and eating fried foods such as latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (donuts), and any other fried foods. It is also referred to as the festival of light during the shortest days of the year and the winter solstice.

Pool Rules 1. Any children seven years of age or younger must be within arm’s reach of an adult 16 years of age or older, and the parent / guardian MUST be in the water. No swim tests are allowed until child is eight years old.

2. Anybody eight years and older who show signs of weak swimming may be asked to use a lifejacket or can challenge the swim test. If the swim test is completed then no lifejacket and no adult supervision is required. If the swim test is not passed, patron must where a lifejacket.

Swim Test (as recommended by the Lifesaving Society): Sixty seconds treading water with head fully out of the water, immediately followed by 25 meters swim without stopping.

One long, loud whistle blast means clear the pool.

Please note: • Must take a head to toe shower with soap before entering the pool.

• Consult and get permission from your doctor if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or are 65+ years.

• Max. of three children under 8 years may be supervised by one caregiver, 16+ years.

• No urinating in or fouling the pool.

• Children 0-2 years and anyone incontinent must wear a swim diaper and waterproof pool pants.

• No diving in shallow end.

• No outdoor shoes.

• No glass, food, gum or drink.

• No running, rough play, offensive behaviour or foul language.

Do not use pool if you: • Have been told not to by a regional health authority or doctor.

• Have diarrhea or have had diarrhea in the past two weeks.

• Have an infectious or communicable disease, sores, and / or wounds.

Private Swimming Lessons Private or semi-private lessons are a great way to get more out of your swimming experience at the Calgary JCC. We offer a variety of dates and times for private lessons for guests three years of age and older; adult lessons are always available as well.

The general public may pay a drop-in fee (see page 9) to attend the class. Experience a fitness class in the pool! Water has a thousand times more resistance to that of air so it can provide an awesome workout. It is suitable for everyone as all movements use the body’s own resistance.

Our aquafitness classes vary between 45 to 55 minutes in length and are led by a team of highly-qualified instructors. The components of all fitness classes include: a warm up, cardiovascular conditioning, muscle and core strengthening, and stretching. There is an average of 17 Aquafit classes that run weekly. They vary in intensity and fitness level so as to meet the needs and abilities of all our adult and / or senior members. Aquafitness Class Descriptions As You Choose Participants are free to choose to work out in the deep water wearing a flotation belt or in the shallow water with their feet on the floor.

With careful attention and preparation, the instructor is able to teach to all participants.

Aqua Variety A challenging class offering a variety of formats and styles. May include deep water workout, Tabata, tether, interval, boot camp, circuit, shallow or Aqua Zen.

Deep Water Workout Wearing a floatation belt, you submerge yourself in the deep end of a pool for a deep water workout! While your deep water aerobics class has a low impact on your joints, it has an enormous impact on your cardiovascular system with the help of the resistance in the water. Class formats may vary between Tabata, circuit, boot camp or interval.

Aqua Zen A shallow water aquafitness experience that encourages peace and vitality through a variety of movements that inspires harmony within the mind, body and spirit. This holistic, wellness-based class focuses on mindfulness and range of motion while improving balance and body awareness. Find your zen while receiving all of the tranquility that the water has to offer.

Shallow Water Workout Activate your aqua urge for exercise! This class is held in the pool’s shallow end in chest-deep water so your feet are always touching the floor. Shallow water workouts improve agility, coordination, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Equipment may be used to develop strength and balance.

Tether Deep Water Workout Aquafit enthusiasts will benefit from this fun cardiovascular workout in the deep water!

There is a strong focus on core stability while performing deep water moves which will result in increased intensity. Participants will find themselves tethered to a lane rope with a bungee cord attached to a belt. Great for beginner to advanced!

For over a decade, Corrina has been teaching, practicing, and guiding those who have made the decision to get out of pain, stay out of pain, and have a better sense of balance. After studying massage therapy, trigger point and active release therapy, she wanted to learn more; not only how to manually help the body, but also how to empower her clients to maintain their bodies through movement. This led to certification in Iyengar Yoga Levels 1 and 2, Stott Pilates (ISP), Neuromuscular Redcord Active training, and Anatomy Trains manual and movement certifications. She also became a Fletcher Matwork Licensed Provider. Corrina also ventured into OsteoPilates and body rolling techniques and obtained certifications in both. She also studied – and continues to study – energy rebalancing, qigong, and shamanism. All of the above happened after Corrina was hit by a truck and a light bulb went off that said… LIFE IS TOO SHORT.

Austin Boje is a Level 1 Crossfit Coach and in the third year of a Physical Literacy BA at Mount Royal University. He is in the infancy of his career, but aims to do great things! Currently, Austin provides individualized exercise programming and can safely prescribe nutritional plans. His focus is on improving muscle imbalances, improving cardiovascular training, and seeking further to specialize in muscle growth and development and injury prevention. He began his exercise career as a triathlete in his pre-teens, moving towards bodybuilding in his later years, and eventually finding Crossfit. He placed 150th in the Canada West Open, with his best “Fran” time being 2:37. Austin has been a coach for over a year and has easily coached 100+ hours. His next career goal (other than to graduate) is to receive his Level 2 because he loves coaching so much! He is a regular guy who possesses the spirit of competition and the love for adversity. When it comes to people, he is committed to giving the utmost level of dedication to each individual, and is ready to share all of his knowledge, love, and respect for fitness; providing answers to those who seek guidance. NEW PWR! Moves PWR! Moves is a program taught exclusively at the JCC. It is a high amplitude exercise class designed for people with Parkinson’s. Attention is focused on four FUNdamental movements specifically targeting skills shown by research to interfere with mobility in people with Parkinson’s: antigravity extention, weight shifting, axial mobility, and transitional movements.

A PWR! Moves assessment is required (cost: $100). Pre-assessment and class orientation will be scheduled prior to your first class. Post-assessement will be booked at the end of the session.

Cardio Tabata. An interval class of high intensity cardio (no equipment) will improve your overall fitness. Nothing fancy, just fierce!

choreography High Fitness. A sweaty blast! Fun: Popular music (new and old). Intensity: Intervals, plyometrics, and easy-to-follow cardio.

Consistency: All instructors teach the same choreography.

Multi-Step. This fun and energetic step class uses two to four steps and challenges your cardio and coordination.

20/20/20. Get the variety you crave! Mix it up in this fun interval training class. Intervals are 20 minutes each of step, hi/low cardio, and resistance training.

Zumba®. Join the party! Latin flavor, hi and low impact, dance-based movement to awesome music will make you forget it’s a workout!

Barre. Ballet-based fitness with weight intervals and core conditioning. This class will lengthen, strengthen and tone your thighs, arms, abdominals, and glutes.

Bone Builder. Join us for a relaxed, low intensity session where we emphasize movement, stretching, and strength exercises designed to help you with life’s everyday activities.

Buti Yoga. This calorie scorching workout fuses power yoga with cardio intensive tribal dance and body sculpting primal movement. The result: long, lean muscles and a super fit body!

Pilates. A mat class blending core strength, flexibility, and alignment. Create long lean muscles and improve body awareness. All levels welcome!

Vitality Stretch. Enjoy this slow-paced stretch and flexibility class. We stretch with purpose to renew length and balance in our bodies.

Yin Yoga. A series of long held poses that improve mobility for your joints and increases mental focus and energy within the body – targeting tendons, ligaments, and fascia.

Yoga. All levels welcome! Poses focus on alignment offering practitioners the opportunity to gain strength, stamina, flexibility, and mindfulness.

EverFit. This gentle moving class will help improve your overall fitness including strength, balance, and cardiovascular health.

Zumba® Gold. Zumba = fun fitness! Low impact, dance-based movement to awesome music that will get you fit while having fun!

Sculpting Body Blast. Amp up your strength training with this full body workout using barbells, hand weights, and cardio intervals.

Pumped Plus. Get strong and defined as we work all major muscle groups. Improve your muscular strength, endurance, and power.

Sets Plus. Dumb bell super set intervals alternate with explosive muscular power moves, giving you a full body workout with amazing results! spinning Spin. Fire up your cardio fitness in this supersweaty cycling workout!

Deep Buti. Masterful and intentional, Deep Buti is a low-impact, restorative movement sequence that connects mind to muscle.

This class is designed to help prevent injury, stimulate nerves, and restructure the deep core. Self-massage and pressure point activation are also used to release muscles during deep restorative asanas.

EZ Energy. Improve mobility, stability, and cardiovascular health in this soft impact class. This fun class closes with core work and stretching.

Classes have no ability criteria, however they are designed to prepare you to progress toward a goal or event. It doesn’t matter if you are preparing for a cycling vacation, a Gran Fondo, riding off the front in a cycling event, striving for a personal best time, or simply wanting to commute more safely and competently – we want you to have goals and be motivated to achieve them.

We progress through the winter season with structured progressive classes. We don’t make pretty sets simply to pass the time.

We spend our precious time in the saddle getting more competent on the bike. We get pumped about training hard, riding outside, and maybe participating in an event. There are no egos – everyone is the same speed on a trainer. The bottom line: good company, great music, and smart sessions.

Trained and talented instructors are careful to offer modifications that address the needs of our participants in classes that include all of the major components of a fitness class. There is a user fee for this program. Our punch card system allows participants the flexibility to attend whichever classes they want each week. Keep Going This class is for adults with a chronic condition who are looking for a little more challenge, but still want a low impact class that is easy on the joints.

The entire class is done standing and will offer various formats to keep it interesting.

Get Going Features walking, seated and standing movement for the cardio component. Strength, balance and flexibility training are done seated or standing behind a chair. Easy Going This class is geared toward adults who are looking for a gentler approach to fitness. The warm up and strength training are done while seated. Because weight baring exercise is so important, walking, posture (against a wall) and balance (holding on to a dance bar) will be done standing.

Alberta Healthy Living Program Facilitated by Alberta Health Services, the Alberta Healthy Living Program is an eight-week course for patients diagnosed with a chronic condition, such as chronic lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and arthritis. The program has been developed and is run by Alberta Health Services professionals supported by JCC fitness leaders to provide exercise, social support, and education to patients.

Graduates of the program have the option of joining the Calgary JCC Active Living Program.
