Jewish Calendar 101
September - December 2025 | Tevet 5786*
* Holidays begin at sundown on the evening before, concluding at sundown on noted day.
High Holidays
September 23-October 2 | 1-10 Tishrei
This holiday is also known as the Ten Days of Awe. Rosh HaShanah
September 23–24 | 1–2 Tishrei
The Jewish New Year. We greet one another with: Shanah Tovah Umetukah — wishing for a good and sweet year. Traditions include eating apples dipped in honey for sweetness, and baking round challah as a symbol of the cycle of life.
Yom Kippur
October 2 | 10 Tishrei
The Day of Atonement — a solemn day of fasting, introspection, and prayer. During the ten days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, Jews are encouraged to reflect on their actions, seek forgiveness, and make amends. One meaningful tradition during this time is Tashlich, where we symbolically cast our sins into a body of moving water, letting go of the past and entering the new year with a clean slate.
Sukkot
October 7-13 | 15-21 Tishrei
The Festival of Booths, is a joyful, weeklong celebration that commemorates the Israelites’ 40 years of wandering in the desert after their exodus from Egypt. During this time, we dwell in temporary structures called sukkot, symbolizing both the fragility of life and the shelter provided by faith. According to tradition, the sukkah reminds us of the huts our ancestors lived in — and invites us to embrace gratitude, nature, and community. Sukkot is one of the three major pilgrimage festivals in Judaism, marked by festive meals, hospitality, and waving the lulav and etrog as part of daily blessings.
Shmini Atzeret / Simchat Torah
October 14-15 | 22-23 Tishrei
Shmini Atzeret marks the conclusion of Sukkot and is a time for spiritual reflection, with prayers for rain and renewal for the coming year.
Simchat Torah celebrates the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle — finishing the last verses of Deuteronomy and immediately beginning again with Bereshit (Genesis), symbolizing the unbroken cycle of learning. Communities come together to dance, sing, and joyfully parade with Torah scrolls in a spirited celebration of Jewish continuity and joy.
Chanukah
December 15 - 22 | 25 Kislev-2 Tevet
Chanukah celebrates the victory of Judah and the Maccabees over the Greco-Syrian army in 165 BCE and the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. When the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple, they found only enough oil to light the menorah for one day — but it miraculously burned for eight. To commemorate this miracle, we light the chanukiyah (a special nine-branched menorah) for eight nights. Chanukah traditions include playing dreidel, giving gelt (chocolate coins), exchanging gifts, and enjoying delicious fried foods like latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly donuts). Known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah brings warmth, joy, and resilience during the darkest days of the year.
