Show Synopsis

“CHICAGO is a darkly satirical, razzle dazzling musical set to the backdrop of Prohibition era Chicago. The show has its origins in real-life, high profile crimes, criminals, and trials of the 1920s. Maurine Dallas Watkins, a columnist at the time, shared these stories with the public, and her columns were so popular that she chose to use the material for a play. Much like her columns, Chicago the play received acclaim from audiences and critics alike. The play even made a Broadway debut in 1926, running for 172 performances. Chicago the play, and later, the musical, both poke fun at the corruption in the criminal justice system and the idea of “celebrity criminals.”

The show opens with two such celebrity criminals, Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, who are shortly joined by other “Merry Murderesses” overseen by the “Countess of the Clink” Matron Mama Morton of Murder’s Row. All the inmates desire, to regain their freedom, is the silver-tongued and premium-priced lawyer, Billy Flynn. They must rely upon him to spin their dubious stories to the jury, the scandal-hungry, unrelenting journalists, and ultimately to you, our audience.

Act Two follows the realization that in this savage world, it is everyone for themselves, which leaves Roxie’s downtrodden husband Amos, alone. Will he & Billy be able to save Roxie from paying the ultimate price for her crime of passion?
